MAGNOLIA HOUSE

Year: 2021

Firm: Estudio Felipe Escudero (EFE)

Role: Architectural Designer and Construction Residency

Location: Quito - Ecuador

Typology: Unifamiliar House

Status: Built

About the Project

Designing this project was a great opportunity to strive for more than simple e iciency. This project was design for bringing back childhood memories. And these memories are present in the form a tree. When the client was a child, the house where she used to live had a tree, so she wanted her new house organized around a courtyard that could shelter a Magnolia tree as the centre of the residence as in her childhood.

The concrete ceiling delicately turns into walls providing the feeling of being hugged and protected. This element also allows for the house to feel transparent and at the same time provide privacy.

In addition to the simple, functional logic, the house design expresses the complex and multiple needs of contemporary living: it responds to the significance of being located at the top of a mountain valley. It is something natural, sculptural and human.

Design Strategies

Familiar yet distinct, the house appears to have either landed in the mountain from another world or to always have always existed there. The design features one thin post-tensioned concrete slab with large spans and overhangs. This allows a traditionally rigid and heavy material look like it’s floating in space.

Cast in place concrete combined with steel and glass make spaces feel modern and cozy. Indirect lighting throughout the house is placed at the top and bottom edges of walls in order to separate architectural elements but also to light the concrete slab from the bottom and highlight its natural character.

1.Separate the volume of the floor
2. Blur perimeter boundaries
3. Perforation in the roof slab and projection to the outside
4. Propose a vegetal filter

Floor to ceiling operable glass facades and a continuous covered balcony that surrounds the whole building are present in the design, eliminates barriers between interior and exterior, brings natural light and air into all the spaces of the house. The resulting e ect is the entire building provides 360 degree views of the surrounding scenery awakening appreciation of nature in their residents.

ENSAMBLE

Year: 2020

Firm: Estudio Felipe Escudero (EFE)

Role: Architectural Designer and Construction Residency

Location: Quito - Ecuador

Typology: Commercial Island for Szimon

Status: Built

About The Project

Ensemble was originally a renovation project completed in 2019 for an ecuadorian commercial clothing brand, which get its product ideas inspired by the national culture, pop-culture and the andean landscape.

After the success of the renovation, the company decided to implement another project with the same concept, but this time focused in a commercial island with a limited space.

The requirements for both project were based on easy storage and display for the largest amount of products. To solve this condition, the project is solved through a cubical wooden module (0,40 x 0,40m) that organizes the space, and shows as a sculpture that adapts to the geometries of the place through repetition.

The dimensions of the module is based on the dimensions of the most prominent product of the clothing brand: T-shirts.

For the commercial island this challenge was even bigger, because there was a strict limit in the area that the project could occupy in order to comply with the regulations of the shopping mall where the project was built and to keep an open space in the inside the island for the staff to work in an efficent space.

The island was built with wood, being an artisanal work, it recalls the feeling of being inside a forest; friendly with presence and identity. As an element of contrast, it is decided to add differents materials and elements such as mirrors, glass and gray boxes for storage, but keeping in mind that the main elements are the wood structure and the products in the display.

COFFEE HOUSE

Year: 2023

Authors: Gabriel Troncoso + Jorge Rivadeneira

Role: Creative Director and Lead Designer

Location: Cotacachi - Ecuador

Typology: Landscape - Master Plan: Cafeteria, Bycicle Parking and Public Space for Industrial Complex

Status: Under Construction

About the Project

The development of the entire project takes place within an existing industrial complex with low environmental impact and the need to create public spaces from di erent layers with the aim of connecting the existing factory to the entrance street and create a relationship with the natural context.

This decision provides the complex with a public gathering space for its workers. Within the industrial complex, 3 intervention spaces are designed. On one hand, the first part of the project involved designing a cafeteria and restaurant for the factory workers. It is a place where they can go during their breaks and have access to food and drinks.

In the second layer, a pavilion-like structure is developed at the entrance to serve as a parking space for bicycle users. Finally, a series of ramps, stairs, and plazas articulate the entire project.

An important factor that was considered in the design was the integration of the natural context into the project, so the use of vegetation is proposed, while the orientations and axis of the walkways, ramps, stairs, and plazas respond to the view of the nearby mountains and volcanoes. The disposition of the elements are displayed in the following order:

COFFEE

1.Co ee House. Design Strategies

The co ee house is resolved in two adjacent and opposing blocks in their characteristics.

On one side, there is a closed brick and white concrete volume where food will be prepared, provisions will be stored, and bathrooms will be located. To take advantage of the strength of the walls and the weight of the brick, perforations and a chimney are proposed, emphasizing the relationship with the height of the surrounding trees.

This volume is complemented by a lighter one made of steel and glass, capable of extending horizontally and projecting itself towards the vegetation and the landscape, extending the project outward and allowing the context to enter.

A concrete beam that allows a waterfall to exits, extends itself towards the center and articulates both volumes.

NORTH FACADE

1.Co ee House. Compositive Elements

Perceptively, the volume on the left is understood as a heavy element. It is the element that uses brick and concrete as its main construction materials. The walls define more enclosed and defined spaces

-The tower establishes a connection with the existing vegetation in the project.

-The concrete slab projects the volume into the context.

-The beam and cascade integrate both volumes into the public space

The volume on the right is a much lighter element compared to the previous one.

-The curtain wall blurs the perimeter boundaries allowing the relationship with nature to become almost tangible, allowing the context to enter the project.

-The use of columns as punctual elements highlights the lightweight of the construction and gives the space a more fluid character; capable of receiving any activities inside.

Due to the large number of bicycle users, a horizontal, lightweight, and open volume made of wood and steel is designed to house a bicycle parking area, showers, bathrooms, and lockers for the workers who arrive at work in the mornings. The roof extends slightly towards the perimeter, emphasizing the horizontality and the importance of integrating the structure with the natural surroundings.

BRICK SHELTER

Year: 2022 - 2023

Author: Gabriel Troncoso

Role: Creative Director and Lead Designer

Location: Guayllabamba - Ecuador

Typology: Residential

Status: Under Municipal Approval. Construction scheduled in 2026

About the Project

The project was designed for a family on the outskirts of the city of Quito. One of the several important conditions considered during the project's development was the relationship it should have with the natural surroundings. From the site, several mountains, valleys, and a large number of trees in the vicinity can be appreciated.

Thus, the project unfolds from the identification of various volumes and spaces that separate and rotate among themselves 45° with the aim of creating di erent levels of privacy and taking advantage of the views in all directions. The resulting spaces between the overlapping volumes will be used as servant spaces, such as pantries and storages.

The Volumen was divided in:

A. Private Space

B. Social Espace

C. Guest Space

IAnother important element considered within the design was the ability for each space to have an opening and direct relationship with the exterior. That's why each room has its own access to the nearby forests.

n order to establish a connection with the construction tradition of the environment, brick is used as one of the main elements of the construction. To make the most of the available light, inclined slabs were chosen, allowing the light entering through the windows to bathe the walls enclosing the di erent spaces. The use of concrete was a decisive factor in covering the large spans and emphasizing the visual weight that the project must have within such an abundant natural space. The central core acts as an articulator of the lateral volumes; within this body, a space for gathering and social interaction is proposed.

Finally, it is proposed that the central core extends itself to the outside, therefore some small terraces are suggested to connect the kitchen, dining area, and living room directly to the outside, always manteining the rhythm and order of the exterior columns.

The resulting spaces between the overlapping volumes will be used as servant spaces, such as pantries and storages.

CULTURAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Mediating Between Natural Space and Consolidated City

Year: 2019

Category: Academic. Final Degree Project

Typology: Infrastructure

Location: Quito - Ecuador

Highlight: Honorable Mention. Faculty Selected Project. Project publicated in the 8th Latin American Call for the Publication of Final Degree Projects in Architecture in the TRAMA Magazine.

The

Site

The project studied the urban spaces that made up the current Metropolitan District of Quito, thus identifying the parish of Solanda as the area of study for this research.

Within the investigation, the Quito´s Wholesale Market was identified as an important element of the sector, wich has influenced the community, especially due to its size and location.

Within the analysis of the space, several problems were identified regarding the functioning of this space and the little support that this space provides to the environment in which it sits.

The Project

After analyzing several spaces in the sector, it was decided to intervene in the Market, since it does not fulfill its main function, it is deteriorating and it generates problems in the sector. Thus, the space currently occupied by the Wholesale Market will be used as an intervention area where the architectural object will be implanted.

The current infrastructure is in a state of disrepair and for the most part cannot be reused.

To stablish parameters for the design, its is decided to use several axes and directions with the current market footprint; and thus propose a Center for Learning and Cultural Development, which can serve as support for the growth and cultural development of the parish.

The architectural object will function as a platform for activities and a meeting place that allows the exchange and discussion of experiences, meanings and knowledge for its inhabitants and their communities.

The project is inserted into the landscape and becomes a mediator between two opposing and at the same time complementary realities; on one side, the consolidated city and on the other the Shanshayas ravine of the Machángara River. Thus this intervention the architectural object highlights these two realities.

Descent Path to the Project

The transition between a natural space and a consolidated urban space is recognized, the architecture works as a platform of relationships between the people and the natural environment

The project buries itself in the ground to create a direct relationship with the natural environment. The ravine is no longer perceived as crack in the territory.

The Wholesale Market was inaugurated in September 1981, at that time, this kind of structure of a metropolitan nature on the outskirts of the city had a very clear logic; especially for the ease of entry of products from the south of the city. Today the Market is located in the area with the highest population density in the entire metropolitan district. As can be seen through the photographs, nowadays the Market is in total deterioration, its infrastructure is totally damaged and it no longer contributes to the development of the sector

Current Market Footprint

To design the project, the axes and directions of the Market sheds overlap to generate the di erent floor treatments, as well as water mirrors and recreational spaces. The most important part of rescuing the footprint of the market is manifested in the direction taken by the Research Center and later the bridge that connects to the other side of the ravine.

Design Intentions - Experience On The Architectual Path

Transition Moments

Once these explorations are understood in terms of the relationship between human perception and the value of architecture in the environment, and taking into account that the project must be perceived as a transition from the city to the ravine and vice versa.

The design considers the following moments of the transition.

1. CONCERN PATH - DESCENT

2. CHANGE OF REALITY COMPREHENSION- DISCOVERY

3. LIBERATION OPENING - CONTEMPLATION

The Architectural Object is buried to manifest the relationship between man, architecture and the natural space. It is decided to focus attention on the buried object and the use of the central oculus as an organizer of space. The entrances to the project are organized by ramps or stairs that take people to this central space and articulate all the spaces that are on its periphery, or face the ravine.

It is important to highlight that the ambulatory is an important space within the project as a shelter for unplanned activities, and a space for social encounters. Once entered into the project, several spaces surrounding the oculus are arranged, which are connected to each other by an ambulatory that encompasses the object, which function as a gallery.

seen from the Ravine

Project
GABRIEL TRONCOSO

Pedestrian access to the project is provided through ramps or steps that lead people to this central space, thus focusing on the moment of descent and discovery; from there, it is possible to connect all the spaces located on its periphery or facing the ravine, once again emphasizing the idea of discovery.

It's important to highlight that the deambulatory is a significant element within the project, serving as a catalyst for unplanned activities, in other words, it becomes an active stage and a space for social gatherings. Once inside the project, several spaces are arranged around the oculus, which are interconnected by a promenade that encompasses the object and also serves as a gallery.

Introduction

Every protected territory is a threatened territory.

The Galapagos Islands were the first place in the world to be declared a Natural World Heritage Site due to its volcanic condition and its immense biodiversity.

It is the place where Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution. Since 1986, the sea that surrounds the Galapagos Islands has been declared a Marine Reserve, a Whale Sanctuary, a Biosphere Reserve and a Ramsar Site. Historical events and the unique natural quality of the archipelago make it an irreplaceable space that must be protected. We consider it pertinent to reveal the Galapagos Archipelago to the world through architecture and research.

Ephemeral Architecture and Insular Space

We consider that given the importance of the existing landscape, it should not be intervened permanently, so we projected a floating object, a nomadic island.

We design an architectural object capable of adapting to the activities that take place during the investigation. A continuous space that intensely relates the contained activities, a space that enables the confrontation of ideas to generate knowledge, which is the exhibition itself.

CHOCÓ ANDINO

Ethereal Landscapes

Year: 2018

Category: Academic (Groupal Project)

Typology: Landscape. Religious

Location: Chocó Andino (Yunguilla, Mashpi and Mindo) - Ecuador

Highlight:

- Pan American Federation of Architects Associations (FPAA) - 2020

Final Degree Project Award Gabriel Serrano Camargo - Urban Design.

- XXI Pan-American Architecture Biennial of Quito (BAQ) - 2018

First National Award, Golden Medal. Senior Year Category - Urban Design and Landscape Architecture.

The Site

Recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, the Chocó Andino is a forest landscape made up of eleven ecological systems, ranging from the paramo to the rain-forest.

This territory is defined as a transition corridor between the mountains and the coast, where the main conditioning factors are defined by the meeting of climates, its forests and the particular material expression as the territory is explored.

The approach to the territory was directed through “the drift”, with which the workshop was able to discover its peculiarities, signs, phenomena and traces that make up the memory of the place.

In this way, the interventions were proposed that give meaning to the way of inhabiting the landscape, thus creating a joint place where the architectonic objetc is present to the extent that the territory requires it.

Landscape and Architecture

The project was carried out within a workshop that brought together interventions by 13 students, where it was proposed to generate a cultural landscape, which through introduced objects transform the landscape, granting a joint reading, between technique, territory and space.

The workshop covered interventions in Yunguilla, Mindo and Mashpi within the Chocó Andino. All these interventions were proposed to understand the specific character of the territory with a use and aesthetics according to each region.

In the Yunguilla's, Mindo's and Mashpi's (cities of the Chocó Andino) interventions, the main objective is to understand the specific nature of each territory with a specific aesthetic and use according to the character of each region.

After recognizing the landscape, a more haptic and personal perspective was sought in terms of understanding the particularities of the site, where the work by hand and the idea of gesture was proposed as a reflection of this sensitive experience of the landscape. Thus emphasis is placed on techniques such as hand-drawing, painting and modeling as means of expression and representation of ideas and intentions in relation to the territory.

[A1] Intervention in the ruin

After analizing the territory each one of us selected a location and a particular theme in order to propose a project. In my case I found the remains of a ruin, which faced a beatitul mountain landscape. The architectural project rescues this perspective and uses the ruins as enhancers of the landscape, it is planned to use the ruins as a refuge and make them a place of intimate encounter with the landscape and its phenomena.

Yunguilla manifests itself through di erent states and moments. Time shows its presence, when in the middle of the mountain foothills leaves testimony of reminiscences, ruins, and scars. The ruins in the landscape are part of it as elements that have a worth in it since they have once changed it.

The use of "the drift, here expressed in a photographic record, was the method that helped us understand each territory, leading us to discover the particularities, signs and phenomena that compose the memory of each place.

The architectural object is inserted on a pre-existing ruin within the landscape. The primary intention is to highlight and maintain the pre-existence of the wall to provide it with a character of personal calm and recollection. This new space that arises from rescuing a pre-existing ruin, seeks to be a spiritual place by becoming a refuge for man and connecting it with the spirit of the landscape manifested in its phenomena: the mist, the forest, the mountains, the water, the light. and the shadows.

The ruin sits like a landmark in the territory, it forms part of the landscape and relates this artificial element with a natural space

The project must dialogue with the walls of the ruin through contrasts (wood and stone), it is planned to separate the new structure from the ruin. The wood hangs to express the lightness of the space

Punture sections of the wall with structural damage and keep the directions towards the landscape

Follow the directions and axes of the existing walls to generate a permeable space and emphasize a central space

The new wooden structure is separated from the wall, respecting its directions to contrast the nature of both elements

Wooden elements hang from the new beams to give hierarchy to the central space and dialogue between the new and the pre-existing

A new light wooden structure is added, which in addition to hosting daily activities, provides the viewer with an ethereal and permeable image of the territory, which enables the object to establish an emotional dialogue with the landscape.

Longitudinal Section

The spiritual dimension of the new project is expressed through the interior space that is formed by the layout of the walls of the ruin, the perforations in the walls allow the free movement inside the space, as well as a diaphanous characteristic in the project. The use of structural wooden beams on the axes that occupied the walls that were overthrown are an expression of the memory and trace of the previous structure.

LA RONDA

Integration of the Architectural Object in the Colonial Center

Year: 2018

Category: Academic

Typology: Infrastructure. Academy of Performing Arts

Location: Quito - Ecuador

Highlight: Honorable Mention. Faculty Selected Project

Introduction

The development of the architectural project is proposed within the Historic Center of Quito, as a medium of awareness in relation to a built environment and the inhabiting of man in the city.

The project is implanted on a disused lot and proposes the rehabilitation and improvement of an abandoned house in the sector. The new space that is proposed rescues memories, traditions and important aspects in the history of the city and specifically of the center of Quito.

The sector chosen for this intervention is a historic neighborhood in the city, known as La Ronda. Since the 17th century this sector began to house artisans, artists, musicians, poets and painters Due to its characteristic of bohemian life is now considered by the citicens as traditional neighborhood in the city.

The Academy

It is proposed to design an Academy of Performing Arts within this new rehabilitated space, as a way to rescue this atmosphere in the memory and life of its inhabitants.

This space will be organized around an open patio, which will allow the creation of a connection between two streets within the sector. The uncovered patio articulates all the main spaces and activities within the project.

The Academy of Performing Arts seeks to be an element that gives the sector a character recognized throughout the city, as a sector where the artistic and cultural presence can be valued again. This space, beyond proposing a place for the arts and theatricality, seeks to be a stage for life, a place where the important thing is not the buildings but the events. This project seeks to be a container of experiences and meanings.

1. NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTION

There is a wide open space inside the lot that is in disuse. The new design contemplates a patio, gardens, rest spaces and a platform that can connect the streets.

2. DAILY ACTIVITIES

Currently there are very precarious buildings, in poor condition, it is intended to use this space to propose a block of services, such as o ices, bathrooms and a cafeteria.

3. DIALOGUE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT

The existing building is rehabilitated, proposing several spatial modifications inside,The building will house classrooms, workshops and a library.

Formal Expression of the Project

The project occupies a highly irregular space among existing constructions, so it is conceived as a series of patios and blocks that use the voids. The irregular layout creates a series of corners and walls that define boundaries, directions and separate service and served spaces. This elements also work as paths where the people can discover the multiple rooms and levels.

The Project and its Meaning

This space is organized around an open courtyard, with a quality related to a passageway. Beyond providing a place for the arts and theatricality, this space aims to be a stage for life, a place where the focus is not on the works but on the events. This project seeks to be a container of experiences and meanings.

The Patio as the Central Point of the Project

The project is developed around a central patio and other secondary ones that are organized at street level. The patios serve to articulate all the volumes and spaces of the project.

The Patio is recognized as an archetype that was an important element in the Colonial era. In colonial houses, it was the element that articulated the spaces of the house, so this element within the project serves the same function and, at the same time, connects the neighborhood by joining two of its streets. It also connects the project with the city in the sense that it highlights the presence of the mountains as natural landmarks within the city's memory.

The project was originated as a platform, which publishes architectural projects and spaces, from own illustrative means that I have developed in recent years. This idea also comes from the desire to share the great work and proposals of friends and colleagues with other people.

Within the representations, emphasis is placed on light, moments in silence and spaces, while giving the viewer the opportunity to imagine and endow spaces with life.

Nowadays this project shows itself as a collection of illustrations and collages made by myself; from personal, collaborative and professional commissions for architectural spaces. This project focusses on a graphic and personal approach to architectural representation.

Since the project started, the work has been published in numerous architectural accounts in Instagram like @archisource, @to uco and @goarchitecture.

During 2023 I participated in the International Open Call of the Architecture and Design Magazine TRAMA to take part in designing the cover for their 176th issue. With one of my pieces I obtain the second place from more than 100 entries.

In May 2023 I took part with the Architect Paulina Flores in an exhibition organized by Ojo de Pez in the Contemporary Art Center of Quito, with an artistic exploration that we made between illustrations and texts.

Inhabited Space

On this occasion, rather than presenting a project, I would like to evoke an intention. Not from tangible and concrete spaces, but from a space created by imagination. This illustration, beyond being filled with descriptions, seeks to be brimming with ideas, associations, and perceptions.

It doesn't aim to define and detail characteristics of a physical space, but to suggest it. Thus, it blurs its boundaries and expresses itself solely through composition, order, and the sense of its elements. The geometry defined in its perimeter hints at ways to inhabit and traverse the space.

The leafless tree manifests the passage of time, the water recalls the presence of nature in the environment, the woman and the child make us participants in their condition as sentient beings in the world.

My intention is to engage in a dialogue with the viewer of the artwork. Black and white become a means for the observer to participate, to involve their doubts, fill in voids, provide a background, set a context, complete colors, add textures, and express their sensations in the process.

I want it to converse with the woman and enable them to feel the child in their lap. Sometimes insinuation is more powerful than a irmation. Doubts give rise to imagination. Beyond merely showing something, I am convinced that an image should be able to evoke and awaken something within me.

Chances of Time

As a result of this artistic exploration made in collaboration with the Architect Paulina Flores, 4 elements were proposed. Two digital illustrations and two creative texts.

Each pair is the result of a introspective journey, were we found a unique and sensitive way of communicating, questioning, and complementing each other to produce something coherent and honest.

The images developed are intuitive and spontaneous impulses generated by di erent imageries that texts evoke individually. Each image takes as a starting point a Romantic painting.

For us was important to remeber that Romanticism was a movement that emphasized emotions, the eternal present, and immortality. It concentrated on expressing and feeling the malaise of the time and the search for the self.
