Spearheaded by STP and supported by the Scottish Government, Scotland Loves Local is the movement encouraging people to create a better future for their community by choosing local.
Kimberley Guthrie, STP’s Interim Chief Officer, said: “In so many ways, the challenges facing our communities have never been greater as we face up to the climate emergency, cost of living and the legacy of coronavirus.
“This has brought out the best in our people and places - unleashing a desire to make a difference, to create a new future. Across the country, we are seeing how that can create better, fairer, more attractive and successful places in which to live and work.
“The Scotland Loves Local Awards are a chance to shine a spotlight on all of this and so much more. To do that, we need you to tell us about the inspiring people and projects whose dedication and innovation is making a real difference where you live.”

A sponsored step challenge which raises vital funds for leading charity Diabetes UK returns this summer – and a call has gone out for people from Scotland to sign up.
The One Million Step Challenge, sponsored by Fitbit, runs between 1st July and 30th September and tasks participants with completing a massive one million steps over three months – around 10,000 a day. People taking part can take part anywhere from their local park to their living room, alone or with family, friends, or colleagues.
All funds raised will go towards Diabetes UK’s work funding life-saving research and ensuring everyone living with diabetes gets the care and support they need.

Or take on the 1,700,000 step challenge, around 18,400 steps a day and the equivalent of walking from Lands End to John O’Groats.
There are some amazing rewards on offer for challengers, including exclusive Fitbit discounts, three unique distance medals and a One Million Step Challenge reusable water bottle for anyone who fundraises over £250.

This summer, St Vincent’s Hospice are raising funds to ensure that they are there for as many people and families across Renfrewshire and adjoining North Ayrshire as possible. It is their mission to be here for all who are affected by life limiting illness.
Last year, the hospice team cared for Peter at his home and in his final days at the hospice. The team supported and continue to support his wife Margaret.
Margaret said “I can’t imagine what would have happened to us if the hospice team had not came to our house that day.” Peter died with Margaret lying in bed next to him, this was a promise that she had made to him. The team at the hospice ensured that Margaret could keep her promise to Peter.
Individual Giving Manager, Hayley Simpson said “We must raise £6,000 every single day of the year to keep the hospice running. We want to make sure we continue to be there for people like Peter and Margaret, at the worst time in their lives. We can only do that if we continue to receive donations. We know times are very tough for a lot of people in our communities, any gift, large or small is so greatly appreciated.”

A horticultural charity based in Port Glasgow has broken ground on a new multi-purpose facility for Parklea Branching Out within the organisation’s existing grounds.
The project is being part-funded by Inverclyde Council and the Scottish Government with the local authority also providing support to deliver the hub. It will feature offices, meeting spaces, accessible toilets and changing rooms, a community café, training facilities and garden retail space. Improvements are also being made to existing facilities and outdoor areas.
Sharon Gemmell, Manager of Parklea Branching Out, said: “We are delighted to have reached this initial stage in the development of our community hub. It has been a team effort with Inverclyde Council, Inch Architecture and Eycon Ltd. I would like to thank them all for their continued work and co-operation.”
The council supported Parklea Branching Out with a successful bid for £1.1m from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) in late 2021 to help bring their hub plans to fruition, in addition to other external funds and use of reserves.
Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s convener of education and communities, said: “It’s a proud moment for everyone associated with Parklea Branching Out to see the dream of a new, purpose-built community facility starting to become a reality.”
Planning Minister Joe FitzPatrick said: “The Scottish Government has invested £1.3 million from the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) to support the development of the Parklea Community Garden Hub. We welcome the plan for a space that will provide a wide-range of opportunities for local people, including vulnerable members of the community and those with learning disabilities. The hub will provide important access to greenspace, and facilitate valuable training and employment opportunities.”
Parklea Branching Out was established in 1997 and uses horticulture to provide training, work experience, supported employment, and recreational and social facilities for a variety of people, including young people and adults with additional support needs.
The organisation grows fruit, vegetables and plants which they sell to individuals, groups and businesses to support its outreach work. For more information please visit: www.parkleaassociation.org.uk.

For everyone who knows us, you will know how much time is put into caring for all of the animals, by all of the volunteers, young and old. We are now the last city farm in Scotland left and we still house over 50 animals here, most of which are rescued and/or retired.
Saturday 2nd to Sunday 10th
September
All the festival favourites return including the opening parade and ceremony, live entertainment, food and craft market, axe throwing, Viking village and fire procession. The Viking skirmish and burning of the longboat will return and the festival will finish with a firework display.
We have a horse and a Shetland pony that are in their 30s, goats that are in their late teens, small furries that are celebrating their golden years and more.
It takes roughly £55,000 - £60,000 a year to run the farm. This money is spent purely on making sure the animals have what they need, but this year we have been faced with the devastating news that we are receiving no funding from either of the local partnership grants or celebrating Renfrewshire grants. To give you an idea, this is a £15,000 shortfall even from last year. We are not trying to scare anyone, but the reality is that without funding coming in, we will be forced to close. We are only a few years off celebrating the Farm’s 50th birthday, but at present it looks unlikely that we will make it that far! So please, please donate if you can. We have tried and tried everything that we can do here! We hate to beg, but we can’t stress enough that we are serious that this could be the end for us. We have a GoFundMe page: https.//gofund.me/ c6ff03ad. We are also happy to provide PayPal or bank details to anyone that would like to donate. Thank you!
It’s great fun for all the family!

On Saturday 1st July Kilbarchan Pipe Band members, James Wallace, Stephen Vaughan and Coinneach Combe were joined by Graeme Dey, Minister for Higher and Further Education and Minister for Veterans.
All had been present at a major commemoration of the start of the battle. James laid the Scout wreath and neckerchief on the grave of Lance Corporal William Dunne, age 20, who died on 25th August 1916, in the Battle of the Somme. He lived in St Barchan’s Road and lies in Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery. Stephen Vaughan played the lament.
Former Kilmacolm Football Club goalkeeper of the 1960’s; 1970’s, Jimmy Barr, is looking for some help.
He is currently in the process of writing “A History of Kilmacolm Football Club“. The work is almost complete and an initial draft has been given to the archivist of Kilmacolm Civic Trust to be included in the Trust’s archive.
The final stages of the work are being held up due to a lack of information as to why and when the club folded. Is there some documentary evidence out there which can help conclude the document which Jimmy hopes to publish in some form?
Can you help? Did you have a parent; relative; neighbour who knows the answer? The best information available just now is that the club had been guilty of playing unregistered players on more than one occasion and the Scottish Amateur Football Association had decided that “enough was enough“ and that Kilmacolm’s membership should be cancelled, thus forbidding them from taking part in organised football in Scotland. The event is one of the world’s oldest workers’ festivals and celebrates the famous victory of Paisley’s weavers in a 19th century industrial dispute. The fun began with the popular Sma’ Shot parade which was co-ordinated by Bridgeman Arts in collaboration with a number of local community groups, performers and musicians. This year’s parade highlighted some of the Paisley women who were making waves at the time and featured colourful performers, floats and costumes led by the Charleston Drum – which made its way from Brodie Park to the town centre.
Once it arrived at the main event site at Abbey Close and Bridge Street, visitors were treated to a performance from local dance group right2dance and the traditional Burning of the Cork – a highlight of the Sma’ Shot Day celebrations, was introduced by spoken word artist and Tannahill makar Shaun Moore.

At the recent full council meeting we heard from Mr Bowles who had led the independent enquiry into the Dargavel primary school’s fiasco. In light of this new information, I put forward an amendment which read “Given the new information included in this external review, council agrees to review the pupil number projection for Park Mains secondary school and will reconsider the recent decision to add an extension to the school. Council officers will present the figures to relevant councillors and explain their workings in support of the recent decision to extend the school rather than build a new secondary school in Dargavel.” The provost initially accepted the amendment before being advised by her legal team that she should not accept it as it may let BAE away with not making any contribution to secondary school education. This is nonsense as the Section 75 does not say to which school the contribution should be used.
I have been urging Renfrewshire’s Health and Social Care Partnership to allow patients in Bridge of Weir to continue receiving treatments at the Strathgryffe Medical Practice without having to travel to Treatment Rooms in Linwood. Currently the proposal is for treatments, including B12 injections, to no longer be carried out at the practice.
My motion at the full council meeting, which called on the council to impress on Transport Scotland the urgency of their report into the accidents at the A8 Langbank roundabout, was agreed unanimously. Their initial findings should be available by October and I will continue to push for improvements and the need to see something done here to make the roundabout safer for residents joining and leaving the A8. The double yellow lines for Main Road near the roundabout are expected to be complete by the end of August.
Surgeries: 6.30pm - 7pm. 1st Monday of month: Langbank Church. 2nd Monday of month: Cargill Hall, Bridge of Weir. 3rd Monday of month: Bishopton Community Centre.

Even though July is usually a quieter time for our Church, with lots of people away on their summer holidays, this one seems to have been busy.
We welcomed our American Minister, Revd. Jonathan Warren and his family at the start of the month for his pulpit swap with our Minister, Revd. Gary Noonan. Everyone enjoyed meeting them and hearing about the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Illinois, where Jonathan is based.
He and his wife Siobhan and their daughters, Hannah and Lydia, were delighted to visit 110 year old Marion Dawson, who is the oldest person in Scotland. They spent time exploring Houston and the local area and went to Edinburgh, to the theatre at Pitlochry, in Perthshire, as well as the Museum of Transport and the Burrell Collection, in Glasgow. The Warrens were also treated to an impromptu afternoon tea by the Guild. We hope they have had a wonderful visit and wish them safe travels as they head home to the USA.
Meanwhile Gary has been preaching at Jonathan’s Church, getting to know the congregation there, sharing stories and learning together.
Unfortunately, our annual Outdoor Service at Old Kilallan Kirk had to be moved indoors to Houston & Killellan Kirk because of the wet weather – but it was still lovely to see everyone.
The Wee Blether returns on Tuesday 1st August after a break for the summer. Why not pop along for a cuppa and a catch-up, from 10.30am to 11.30am?
Our Sunday Club, for children aged from 3 to 18, is back from 20th August.
It meets every Sunday during term time, from 10.50am to 12noon in Killellan Halls, at the back of the church, and are always happy to welcome new children.
Activities include things like den building, arts and crafts, playing games and using STEM challenges to explore some of the Bible’s core messages.
Other regular events include our Foodbank Collection every Tuesday, the Men’s Shed on Wednesdays and Houston Hello on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.

Over the summer I have made a substantial submission to Boundaries Scotland, of some 1,400 words, opposing their plans to partition Johnstone and the villages for Scottish Parliamentary elections and have put counter proposals which would keep Johnstone and the villages together. I have further called for a Boundaries Scotland Hearing. This is a quasi-judicial inquiry chaired by a Sheriff which can amend or even overturn what Boundaries Scotland wish to do.
I object to the Boundaries Scotland provisional proposals in the strongest terms. They breach many of the core principles of Boundaries Scotland, as publicly set out, namely they take little account of local authority areas, would break established community and administrative ties and create new constituencies with no cohesion in transport terms. This will lead to and increase voter apathy.
What concerns me most is that the three villages in my ward, Lochwinnoch, Kilbarchan and Howwood, would find themselves in a new Renfrewshire South which stretches to the South Lanarkshire border at Eaglesham. The demographics of that new seat, taking in places such as Clarkston and Thornliebank, would inevitably mean that the concerns of our area would be lost behind the claims of communities which are essentially Greater Glasgow.
I have come up with counter proposals for new Renfrewshire Holyrood constituencies, a new Renfrewshire South East on existing Renfrewshire South boundaries, a new Renfrewshire North and West containing Paisley Northwest ward and a new Paisley and Cardonald seat which takes in the Cardonald ward from Glasgow City Council. I have formally written to Boundaries Scotland demanding a Hearing to put my case forward.

Bridge of Weir Choral Society was founded in 1948, so this year we are celebrating our 75th anniversary.
On 30th September 1948 there was an inaugural concert by the Greenock Male Voice Choir in the Cargill Hall, Lintwhite Crescent, Bridge of Weir and shortly thereafter, on 12th October, those interested in joining the new society met in one of the classrooms of the old school (now private residences). A week later, everyone was given a voice test! There were 46 members - 25 sopranos, 9 altos, 5 tenors and 7 basses. A history of the choir was produced for our 50th anniversary by choir member Neil Arthur, to whom we are indebted for this information.
Bridge of Weir Choral Society will resume rehearsals for the autumn season on Wednesday September 6th at 7pm in the Kidston Hall, Kilmacolm and the good news is we no longer require a voice test.
Preparations will start for the Christmas Concert - our usual mix of popular carols and less well-known seasonal songs - which this year is scheduled for Sunday 17th December.
We are actively seeking new members, so if you fancy having a go, please come along. There is no audition process (unlike in 1948!), music is supplied and you can come along for a couple of weeks before joining. You don’t need to be able to read music as, during rehearsals, our conductor Christopher Barr very patiently takes us through lots of note bashing until we’ve got it. In addition there are free online rehearsal materials for practice at home between rehearsals. For further information, please contact: mary.Leishman@4-consulting.com
Your say on your community councils
Inverclyde Council has launched the second stage consultation in its review of community councils
The review will help shape how Inverclyde’s community councils will look in future.
Community councils are the third tier of government, bridging the gap between communities, council and national governments. They play an important role in towns and villages across Scotland.
At the moment there are 11 Inverclyde community council areas. The new consultation proposes merging some areas to create eight areas with the aim of this being to make sure that communities are better represented and to make the areas more clearly defined.
Inverclyde Council’s Community Council Champion, Councillor Paul Cassidy, said: “This is an important consultation that can help to shape the voice of communities right across Inverclyde and I would urge you to take part.
“It’s important to emphasise these proposed boundary changes are exactly that, proposals. They are not the final boundaries, but they are ones that we genuinely want to hear the public’s views on.
“I see community councils from two sides. As a former community council member myself, I know only too well the dedication of community council members in being a strong voice and advocates for their community, working closely together to make sure the towns and villages of Inverclyde are great places to live and visit.
“As a councillor with Inverclyde Council, I also now get to see community councils from a different view and the crucial role they have in local decision making, working with community partners such as the police and having a voice in issues such as planning.
“The consultation will help to shape, strengthen and enhance what community councils look like for years to come. I hope also that it raises the profile of community councils going forward and encourages many more people to give their time and skills to their local community council. It is very worthwhile and can help to make sure your town or villages voice is strong.”
You can have your say on the community council consultation at: www.inverclyde.gov.uk/communitycouncilreview
The proposals can also be examined at Inverclyde Council’s Customer Service Centre at the Municipal Buildings, Clyde Square, Greenock, PA15 1LY or any of Inverclyde Council’s libraries.
The consultation is open to any individual and organisation and written suggestions or representations should be received by 5pm on Tuesday 15th August 2023 either by email to community.councils@inverclyde.gov.uk or in writing to the Head of Legal, Democratic, Digital and Customer Services, Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Clyde Square, Greenock, Inverclyde PA15 1LY.
This year, we again operated a delivery-only system of envelopes throughout Kilbarchan and Brookfield, asking folks to return their envelopes to the Church Hall, to Brookfield Village Hall, or to donate electronically via the JustGiving page on our website.
The total sum raised was £3,460.55 which, together with the Gift Aid recoverable by Christian Aid, means that almost £4,200 will be available to support their efforts to change lives. This is a great response (more than £500 above last year’s total) particularly given the pressures on household budgets at this time. We are most grateful to all who donated so generously. None of this could be achieved without the efforts of many volunteers who give of their time to distribute envelopes and count the donations. We owe them a great deal of gratitude.
Our contribution to this year’s appeal has helped raise more than £2.5 million in the UK, at the time of writing, with donations still coming in.
This fundraising is vital to support the efforts of Christian Aid to help those in need in some of the poorest communities in the world, and to campaign for real change which will remove the inequalities which blight the lives of so many.
cllr david wilsonI was invited to No 10 during July and was able to discuss with Ministers and special advertisers matters with regard to Inverclyde. I am disappointed to not win the bid for one of the two FreePorts in Scotland, but appreciative of Levelling Up and City Deal monies for the Ocean Terminal and Inchgreen. The West of Scotland bid was an excellent one and as well as Inverclyde, covered the Airport environs.
The Scottish Government and COSLA are consulting on what I oppose and consider to be unreasonable increases on the four highest bands of Council Tax, namely E, F, G and H. The increases are 7.5%, 12.5%, 17.5% and 22.5% and would be on top of any normal increase in 24/25.
The Armed Forces Act of 2021 has become law and Inverclyde Council welcomes our responsibilities under the Act. We have duties with regard to health, social care, housing and education. We must have regard to the unique obligations and sacrifices made by our armed forces.
St Columba’s Junior School always have inspirational speakers at their Prizegiving in St Columba’s Church. Horse McDonald, singer songwriter, was no exception. She emphasised to the youngsters that there is no problem with being different and received a massive ovation for singing without accompaniment. The regular Beating the Retreat in Birkmyre park was quite stirring. We wish the band well in the World Championships in Glasgow this month.
Our Shipbuilders Statue in Coronation Park was “launched” by my colleague Robert Moran, a former shipyard worker. The 33ft piece of public art attracts visitors.
New bins have appeared on the splendid pavements. A problem are the blue commercial rubbish bags which are collected three times a week, but often not before the crows and seagulls get pecking at them. Traders should keep them, if possible, inside the shop until the morning of collection.
The Best Bus Service Award was for our £1.3m support for many Community Transport organisations in the West of Scotland. Here in Inverclyde we support Ardgowan Hospice patient transport, Port Glasgow voluntary transport group and Inverclyde VCSS. All excellent transport causes.

It was a delight to attend the KPS P5-7 celebration event at the end of term and enjoy the many talents of the young people. It was also great to have the opportunity to wish Mrs Cameron a very happy retirement after 27 years of service to the school and the Council.
The pavement upgrading works in Kilmacolm village centre are progressing well. The estimated overall completion date is mid to late August.
A reminder that the 20mph zone in Kilmacolm village centre is now mandatory, meaning it an offence to exceed the speed limit.
Later this month the Council will be starting an 8 week public consultation on the potential disposal of land at the Wateryetts Drive roundabout to the developer of the proposed housing development at West of Quarry Drive. The consultation will be promoted on the Council’s website and social media and the Community Council will be formally consulted as the representative body for the village. I would encourage all interested parties to respond.
The Scottish Government has launched a consultation on changes to how Council Tax is calculated for houses in bands E, F, G and H, which would result in increases in Council Tax of 7.5%, 12,5%, 17.5% and 22.5% respectively next April for these properties before any local increase in Council Tax is decided by Councillors. The Scottish Government say these changes, which are similar to changes made in 2017, would make Council Tax fairer and raise much needed additional funding for local services. You can find details of the consultation on the Scottish Government website.
At the time of writing, work has started on the fit-out of Kilmacolm’s Post Office and I have been advised by the Post Office that they anticipate the branch will be operational by the end of July.

It’s August already and we are now at the end of the summer season. The Reserve has an abundance of brightly coloured, sweet smelling, wildflowers lining the trails, providing food for our pollinators. The trails are filled with bird song and lots of newly-fledged birds. This year we have had the usual Blue Tits, Robins and Chaffinch young, but we have also had Mute Swans, Lapwings, Snipe, Little Ringed Plovers, and Common Sandpipers. I personally love the Reserve even more at this time of the year - it is so lush and green, with beautiful wildflowers lining the trails.

So far, this summer’s been one for the record books. Temperatures in June were the highest in over 100 years and July, though cooler, brought a lot of rain. What will August do, we wonder?
These extremes haven’t done our plants any harm so far. The petunias didn’t like the rain so much, but a bit of dead-heading should see them all right. The rest of the flowers and recently planted shrubs are thriving, thoughthe heat being followed by wet, humid weather has been great for them. It’s been good for us, too, as we haven’t had to do as much watering as in previous years. All we can hope is that August doesn’t bring any nasty surprises.
Whatever the weather, Brighter Bridge of Weir’s small team will be looking after all of our planters, tubs, baskets and open spaces right through the rest of summer and autumn, too. Some help would be much appreciatedwe’re not asking for much, just a couple of hours now and again. You can find out more on our website www.brighterbridgeofweir.org or call Neil (07969 642487), or Dougie (07810 722806) or email info@brighterbridgeofweir.org.
Gardeners are looking forward to the Garden Festival on . Members of the Gardening Club will display a range of flowers and vegetables, along with anything from their gardens likely to make fellow gardeners smile! We will discover just who has produced the Tallest Sunflowers and Largest Potatoes. The disasters will have their chance too on the “wonky table”. The venue will be Freeland Church Hall and a sales table will offer home-grown plants. We’ll be there between 12noon and 3pm, so please come along.
Weather conditions in July were forecast to be mixed and, after the earlier heatwave, welcome rain arrived early to top-up water butts and soak our gardens. There was then a burst of grateful growth from plants and vegetables plus, inevitably, a spurt in weeds. Now Renfrewshire Council charge us for collecting our garden waste, leave weeds beside your compost bin until they have dried out, then drop them in. Composting is even more inevitable so, for your green kitchen and garden waste, invest in a simple metal incinerator with the most holes, place it in a sunny spot and let the sun heat the metal and get the composting underway! There can be a mid-summer lull in our gardens. This can be offset by colourful planters, but bulbs such Alliums are an easy addition for lowmaintenance gardeners. Check out the photo above of Allium “Hair” and its “Ken Dodd” flower! “Sphaerocephalon” is a reliable Allium with tall, thistle-type flowers, but no prickles and a good alternative to Cirsium, which quickly spreads. Starting Point: Brownside Farm Carpark
Distance: 6.4 miles
Time: About 3 hours points of interest: Fantastic views over Paisley, occasional red deer and the Craigielinn Waterfall
There are many great trails throughout the Gleniffer area, but one great way to see the braes in all their beauty is to walk from bottom to the top and back down again. The route takes about 3 hours at a gentle pace. You begin at Brownside Farm Carpark following the road until it bends left where you continue and join with Procession Road, past the lower dam and into Glen Park. Make sure you stop to admire the wonderful willow woven archway at Glen Park – a good spot for a quick photo or a picnic. Continue up through the beautiful native woodland, enjoying the peace and quiet – unless you have children with you in which case, now might be a good time to persuade them with the promise of a sweetie or two at the top or to start a game of ‘The Floor is Lava!’
Cross the Glen Burn and bear right eventually crossing Braehead Road. Continue onwards until you cross the Wardhouse burn and eventually bear left and walk alongside the Gleniffer burn until taking a sharp right. The terrain becomes open moorland here and the views are wonderful. Continue on until you reach the highest point of the Braes. From here retrace your steps. The way back offers various routes, but make sure you stop off to visit the wonderful Craiglielinn Waterfall. If it’s hot, you might want to get your head under for a refreshing shower!
On 17th of June at Howwood Village Fete, HWW had a successful afternoon selling plants, to raise funds for our group. We had a good selection of flowers (Sunflowers, Geraniums, Asters, Cosmos, etc.) grown by members of our group. Our stall was well attended by those who had come to the Fete and all of our plants were sold well before the end of the afternoon. Following a lot of hard work by members of the group, tubs at the entrances to the village are now in full bloom as are the barrels at the Rhombus Garden and the half barrels both there and at the four entrances to the Triangle.
HWW are always looking for new members. If you are interested in helping out, please contact: Bill David, Chair - bill@billdavid.co.uk; Miller Leon, Secretary - millarleon90@gmail. com or Roger Brown, Treasurer - Roger.hovis.brown@googlemail.com
Two walks in June saw 8 of our group climb Ben Halton, a Graham (one of Scotland’s 2000 ft mountains) located in Glen Artney. Warm, cloudy, damp conditions greatly improved once the summit was gained and fine views were enjoyed. Our second outing involved a spectacular overnight trip for 13 of us to the Eyemouth/St Abbs area. The first day included a cliff side hike from Eyemouth to Coldingham bay. The vistas were tremendous and our fauna and bird expert Marie, kept us informed. On reaching the bay we headed inland to Coldingham before heading back to Eyemouth and a group dinner at The Ship. Day two continued the cliff walk theme, from St Abbs Nature Reserve following the cliff path and back around the fresh water Mire Loch, a great trip!
The first walk of July and 12 of us headed for Callander to walk the Bracklinn Falls loop linked with the Callander Crags trail. A day of sunshine and showers thankfully the showers were neither too heavy nor too long lasting. An enjoyable walk combining woodland paths and a higher track which afforded fine distant views, meanwhile a small contingent headed off for 11 days walking in Chamonix, we await their report and photos!
A big thanks to everyone who came along to support us at our Meet and Greet in July. The donations we received on the day have been put to good use already and the village is looking prettier than ever. We had a great day meeting everyone and even managed to sign up a few volunteers. We had lots of positive feedback on our potential future projects and we will keep you all posted on the progress.
This year’s outing for Young Carers in Renfrewshire was held over 4 afternoons, each taking up to 20 youngsters to the Watersports Centre at Castle Semple Country Park Lochwinnoch
#340 September 2023: 16th August
Term is now over and our young children have performed their hearts out at our Summer Concert. We have said a fond farewell to our older children who are now fully prepared for their next step as they move on to a variety of primary schools. We wish them luck!
We managed to squeeze in as much as possible before the end of term, one of the biggest highlights was definitely our annual summer trip. What an amazing day we had. It all began with the arrival of the bus that took us on a wonderful journey to Pollock Park.
A huge thank you to former Duchal parent, ranger Denise Neely for a fabulous day. We hunted for mini beasts in the forest with our big nets, found centipedes, slugs, spiders and wood lice. We said hello to all of the Highland cows, learned about their horns, their tags, their sense of smell their habitat and their diet. A terrific way to end our mini beast topic!
Dependent on weather, the carers were introduced to watersportscanoeing or trips on the “wheelyboat” donated some years ago by Rotary and on land, cycling around the loch. The afternoon culminated with Fish and Chips and soft drinks. Thanks to the staff at Castle Semple and to the Rotary members who assisted. Young Carers are youngsters who provide ongoing home support to disabled parents or siblings.
With holidays the 2 meetings in July featured talks by 2 members. On 12th July Ronnie Mercer spoke about his business and management adventures and on 26th July Graham Murnane’s talk entitled Percy Pig, the Puffin, and the Penguin emphasized the importance of Trade Marks. In August a social night is proposed for the 9th and a talk on Canadian Adventures by Alan Bowie on the 23rd August.
Winners of a dozen Rotary Club Primary School Quizzes in the West of Scotland met on 1st June in Mearns Primary School for the District Final. The furthest travelled were from Campbeltown, with a 144 mile trip each way!
We were ably represented by the Bridge of Weir team of Cameron, Joseph, Imogen and Ciaran. Netherlee Primary took an early lead which they held till the end, followed by a tight pack which included Bridge of Weir who took fourth place in the final reckoning, a creditable result in a high standard, close competition.
Well done the team and thank you to the parents and staff who provided transport and support.
We celebrated our summer birthdays with our annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic unfortunately despite weeks of glorious sunshine we hit a rainy day, but that didn’t deter the children and their teddies having a wonderful time with their indoor picnic.
Over the year we have really enjoyed our football sessions with Morton in the Community, and we had a fabulous final morning with the children delighting in showing off their skills to watching parents and family. A big thank you to Morton.
Finally, a huge thank you to our wonderful teaching staff that make Duchal the truly special nursery that it is. Wishing you all a relaxing summer. New Entries: We offer free pre school education for 3 – 5yr olds every day (during term time) through the funded nursery scheme in conjunction with Inverclyde Council. Open 8am – 6pm. Whether it is expanding on class topics, bringing history to life or exploring the great outdoors, all our pupils benefit greatly from getting out of the classroom and enjoying a School trip – with a bumper number taking place in June.
Our youngest Columbans in Early Years had an amazing day visiting the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride where they got to meet lots of animals (and get up really close to them) and learn all about the history of farming (front cover image)
Junior 5 enjoyed a day out to Whitelee Windfarm, which helped them round off the electricity topic they have been working on in class. As well as a bus tour of the wind turbines, they got to carry out their own investigations about wind power.
In Senior School, all year groups from Transitus right through to SVI enjoyed Activities Week. Transitus and SI completed their John Muir Award, while SII enjoyed outdoor activities at Barcaple. Meanwhile SIII choose to either spend the week in Staffordshire or touring the WWI battlefields of France and Belgium.
Further up the School, a large number of pupils in SIV and SV completed their Silver or Gold expeditions for their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, walking, biking, canoeing or sailing in particularly sunny conditions.
And for SVI, Activities Week was about making memories before they head out into life beyond St Columba’s with trips to Alton Towers and paintballing.
Whatever the destination, whatever the age group, these trips have provided our pupils with positive learning experiences and a lifetime of memories.

This year all the churches in Kilmacolm are pooling resources to facilitate a funfilled Holiday Club for primary school aged children called “Crossroads Kids Club” on 9th - 11th August from 10am12.30pm at St Columba Church Hall. The last time any of us ran a holiday club it was called “Going Bananas”, and was a collaboration between St Fillan’s Episcopal and Mount Zion churches in summer 2019. The children had a great time playing games, singing songs, making crafts, watching puppet and drama performances, and taking part in interactive quizzes, all with a simple Bible message and in a safe environment. Following the summer holiday club, we held a popular puppet workshop day in the October holiday 2019 and hoped to have another holiday club in summer 2020. We are delighted that we are now ready to run a club again after a few years’ break.
Crossroads Kids Club will also include games, crafts, puppets, drama & quizzes. We will follow the three mornings with an all-age Friday evening event, to showcase what the children have been learning to their families. For more information and to prebook your child’s place please email mountzionquarriers@gmail.com. The club is free of charge.

Thanks to all that attended our 125th birthday party. The day started with a “Spider” event and congratulations to past president Norval Easson on being the “Lucky” winner. This was followed by an afternoon of fun bowling (between dodging the showers) with the highlight being the end where you had to bowl with your wrong hand - hilarious!!!
We were then joined by Provost Lorraine Cameron, Councillor Audrey Doig, Councillor Alison Ann Dowling and Council Officer Steven Sweeney, where just under 100 members, guests and friends enjoyed a 3 course meal followed by speeches eloquently delivered by Provost Lorraine, President John Gilchrist and Past President Bob Holmes.
The tables were then cleared away and the evening continued for a few hours with music and dancing.
All in all a wonderful day and a fitting tribute to commemorate this historic occasion. We all look forward now to 2048 when the club will celebrate its 150th anniversary!!!
Congratulations to our Junior team who have won this year’s Paisley & District Golf League’s Newton Shield for the first time in its history.
In very wet conditions our team were victorious against Paisley Golf Club in the final at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club. The sun finally shone during the prize giving after hours of persistent rain! Well done to the whole squad - The Future’s Bright at KGC!
We are delighted that our Junior Captain, Alexander Farmer, has been selected to represent Scotland in the European Boys’ Team Championship, held in Slovakia from 11th - 15th July 2023. This is a huge honour and well deserved. On Sunday 25th June we had over 100 players in our Gents Open, some playing in almost constant rain.
Well done to winner Josh Greer, a former member who is visiting from Australia and fresh from an impressive performance in the recent British Amateur. Josh scored a gross 67, just ahead of members Andy Farmer with a level par 69 and pipped our club champion Jordan Ferguson on better inward half.
Round of the day was Kieran Turner from Lochwinnoch GC with a net 63 to win the A Class. B class was dominated by Kilmacolm members with Callum Campbell coming out on top with net 65.
Our course was superbly presented and stood up to the heavy rain. All visitors were impressed with the greens and will be looking forward to coming back to Kilmacolm soon.
Upcoming events: Ladies Open - Thursday 17th August & Mixed Open - Sunday 3rd September. More details on our website.
Our Gents Newton Shield Team are in the finals again this year after a nail biting semi final that was suspended due to rain and flooded greens. The team returned the next day to win 5 - 3 under clear skies. Good luck!
Our Ladies Greenlees team have also had some great wins so far. Watch this space.

So the West Plate Final took place at the Petershill Stadium on 18th June ( Father’s Day). This was the U14’s first league final so nerves were running high. Plenty of adults were there to support the Houston team, together with several of the U16 squad. Team Captain Pippa Mackay kept her team in positive spirits as the kick off approached. The starting whistle blew and kick off commenced, both teams started a little nervously, passing in and out towards there team mates - Houston began to relax as the game picked up momentum. Houston kept good strong possession of the ball with several strikes at the goal, but The Buddies stood strong in defence to ensure the ball did not enter the net. St Mirren made a break through in the first half where their striker made a run for the goal with the ball in full control on her feet before planting in in the top right corner allowing The Buddies to take the lead. The half time whistle blew the score St Mirren 1, Houston nil. The second half kicked off and both team were hungry for goal, Houston dominated the second half with many more strikes at goal, but the quick response of the St Mirren keeper made it difficult for the ball to enter the net, It wasn’t long before Houston’s Anna McMinn sneaked the ball through under the keepers leg to level the game to 1 each. Houston continued to hunt for more, but time ran out and the full time whistle blew with both teams a goal a piece. Extra time of 10 minutes each way began - again Houston dominated making it difficult for St Mirren to get away with the ball, McMinn takes another opportunity and scores again. 2-1 to Houston, minutes later the referee awards Houston a penalty which was taken by a fully composed Alice English where she calmly placed the ball passed the keeper into the net, 3-1 to Houston. The whistle blew for the teams to take a quick break before the second half of extra time. Both teams came out strong with the eyes on the prize, St Mirren continued to attack through Houston’s midfield, but the girls made it difficult for The Buddies to get clear shots at the goal, with minutes left St Mirren seized the opportunity to slot the goal in the net from a well driven corner bringing the score to 3-2, but time ran out and Houston were rewarded with the U14s West league plate. The girls celebrated whilst displaying great sportsmanship, the supporting girls ran across the pitch to celebrate Houston’s success. After the success of the U14s game an after party was held to allow the team to let their hair down, party and enjoy pizza.
Houston girls began in June 2019 with just 50 girls, today they have over 150 from 5 years to 16 years, the U14 squad alone consists of 24 girls which is outstanding. No player is turned away, if a girl wants to play football we let them play regardless of experience. This year the girls club have been generously sponsored by Spratts Utilities and Houston Farms.
The club’s success would not be possible without the dedicated coaches and parents.
Well another month of golf in the sunshine has passed with handicaps tumbling down, as they should.
We have had a good number of team competition wins both at home and away. These include the Bronze team winning against Caldwell 3-0 and Elderslie 3-0, captained by Fiona McCrudden. The teams donned team shirts for the first time and not only did they look smart, but played better too!
Our Greenlees team played and won 5/4 against Whitecraigs. Congratulations to Valerie Mackinnon and her team.
Our Ladies Open had 38 couples (76 entrants) playing on a very rainy day. Our 9 generous sponsors ensured many went home with a prize despite the showery day. Congratulations to overall winners Merope
Dunlop (ORGC) and Sandra MacDougall (Kilmacolm GC), who were unable to attend the Prize Giving. (Lana Wilson pictured right with Fiona MacPhee (Past Captain) receiving 2nd Prize). However, the 19th hole was busy with food orders, drinks and chatter until well after the prizegiving. Such a fantastic atmosphere in our beautiful lounge.
Thanks to Suzanne Smith (pictured below) and her committee for organising and hosting the event, raising £435 for St Vincent’s Hospice. Ladies coaching proved as popular as ever with new hopefuls learning golf basics with our Lady members lending a hand with Marion Downie (Organiser).
We welcomed the rain which has fed the course after some fabulous sun and heat. We continue our golf season with a full diary of Medal competitions and events including a Fashion Show Extravaganza on 6th September (Yvonne MacPhee, Organiser).
