Communication problems: At the September meeting of Bridge of Weir Community Council considerable time was spent debating the lack of response to our enquiries mainly from Renfrewshire Council. The Secretary outlined her frustration at the time she spends sending out numerous correspondence to Council departments and receiving no reply or acknowledgement in return. Renfrewshire Councillors McCulloch, Don and MacLaren who were in attendance at the meeting left with a clear message that Community Councillors were extremely dissatisfied with the current Council procedure. The Community Council has made our feelings known to the Chief Executive of Renfrewshire Council through the channel of the Renfrewshire Forum of Community Councils.

Flu season is approaching so it is time to consider contacting your GP practice to arrange a flu jab. Flu can be a serious illness. Most people only catch flu once or twice in a lifetime and are often significantly unwell for a few weeks. The flu vaccine will not stop the coughs and colds we all get every winter. Anyone who suffers from a health condition, who is pregnant or who is 65 or over should be immunised. If you have a health condition, flu can hit you hardest. The vaccine is the safest and most effective way of protecting yourself. Conditions and diseases which can make flu much more serious include: asthma, chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease, chronic kidney failure and diabetes. If you have any of the above conditions or any other serious health condition, even if you feel fit and healthy, please speak to your GP practice to find out if you should have the flu vaccine. Flu can seriously affect you, so it is worthwhile being immunised to avoid unnecessary worry for you and those close to you. If you have children who suffer from any of the conditions above, they should be vaccinated too. Again this year, pre-school children over the age of two are being offered immunisation, in the form of a simple nasal spray, at their GP practice. Primary school pupils will be immunised in school with the consent of their parents. If you are pregnant, you are at greater risk of complications from flu. Having the vaccine now could help you avoid catching flu and protect your baby. Unpaid carers of any age, including young carers, are also eligible for the flu vaccine. The vaccine takes around ten days to work and should protect you from flu for around a year. You have to be immunised annually because the virus bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir changes constantly and your immunity reduces over time. Last year’s vaccine will not necessarily protect you from this year’s flu viruses. Please note: no egg-free vaccines will be available this year. The flu vaccine can’t give you flu, but it can stop you catching it.

Singing for Wellbeing

A fun, no-pressure choir singing feelgood songs every Tuesday from 6pm - 7.15pm and Fridays at 2pm - 3.15pm in the Bishopton Community Centre.

Community co-operation: The meeting heard a presentation from two visiting delegations. Nathan Graham member pioneer for the co-op informed us that the co-op is keen to engage with the community, be more approachable and are willing to assist with funding for local projects. Houston Road Park: Delegates from Bridge of Weir United FC spoke of their proposal for an asset transfer for the unused pavilion and football pitch at Houston Road Park, they outlined the advantages this would have for the development of the club and the prospect of allowing local youth teams the opportunity to play home matches in their own park. The Community Council were delighted to support this project in its infancy. There was uncertainty as to whether all the monies earmarked for improvements at Houston Road Park had been spent. Councillor Don agreed to look in to this matter further. On the buses: The SPT has chosen to reject our pleas for a direct bus service to Paisley and have announced changes to services 1/1A and 2/2A which incorporates a route change in Linwood giving an extended journey time to Johnstone for village commuters. Hall closure: With the closure of the British Legion Hall alternative arrangements are being considered for our Christmas Lights switch on celebrations, this is likely to be an outside event and any suggestions would be welcomed, please contact us through our Facebook page. Bin collections: Our Renfrewshire Councillors reported on various issues including changes to our bin collection later this year, Renfrewshire Council is running a series of road shows to inform the public. The bins in Livery Walk, the Council has agreed to replace some with lidded bins to minimise the debris being pulled out by birds. Village investment fund details are expected to be released very soon and will include who can apply, how to apply and what kind of projects the funds can be used for. Roads: Road resurfacing works will be carried out shortly on Torr Road, Kilbarchan Road and Hazelwood Road. Repair to the poor road surface outside Amaretto’s has also been instructed. Police report: PC Steven Reid reported on a number of crimes over the summer months they included housebreakings, thefts, shoplifting, 1 robbery, common assaults, vandalism at the school, and anti-social offences. He informed us that thefts are on the increase in all areas with the reminder not to make it easier for the thief by leaving keys on display near windows Next meeting: This will be the Annual General Meeting which will be held on Tuesday the 2nd of October at 7pm in the Cargill Hall.
