Villagers in bid to Name a Guide Dog Puppy “Habbie” Volunteers in Kilbarchan are hoping to raise £5,000 to name a guide dog puppy ‘Habbie’. The appeal will launch during Guide Dogs Week in October and is being backed by local guide dog owner Derek Parrott, who was raised in the village. The puppy will be called Habbie, which is the name given to natives of Kilbarchan. Derek and his guide dog Striker are well known around the village and he hopes that residents will support the fundraising campaign. He said: “I’ve had poor vision my entire life, but lost all my useful vision 44 years ago. Striker is my second guide dog and we’ve been working together for six months now. “I can’t put into words how much Striker has changed my life. I was previously using a long cane to get around but having a guide dog allows me to go wherever I want. “My guide dogs have given me back my independence.” Although Derek, like all guide dog owners, only had to pay a token 50 pence, each guide dog costs the charity over £55,000 from birth to retirement. The West Renfrewshire fundraising branch of Guide Dogs plan to put collection boxes in a number of Kilbarchan locations during Guide Dogs Week, which runs from 6-14 October, so locals can donate and help raise the £5,000 needed to name a guide dog puppy. Businesses are being urged to lend their support by hosting a collection box during the campaign.

Re-homing Pets Can you offer a home to any of our featured pets? Fergus - 1 y/o male Persian/ Chinchilla Persian Cross Fergus is extremely affectionate, loves human company and loves being the centre of attention so would prefer a family and a house where someone is at home a lot of the time. He has always been a house cat and would also have to be an only cat. We are only taking enquiries for Fergus by email as we expect him to be snapped up very quickly.

Hedgehog - 5 to7 y/o male Terrier Cross

Community Fundraiser Tammy Robinson said: “It would be fantastic if local shops and businesses could get behind our appeal to have a community named guide dog puppy. “All they need to do is display the collection box during Guide Dogs Week as we’ll deliver it to them and pick it up again. “We’re also hoping residents will support the fundraising drive so we can help another puppy on its way to becoming a life-changer like Striker.” Businesses who can help by hosting a collection box, or anyone wishing to fundraise in another way, can contact Community Fundraiser Tammy Robinson by calling 07468711904 or emailing tammy.robinson@guidedogs.org.uk.

Helping Hedgehogs Wildlife experts advise that hedgehogs will eat cat/dog food and water, but under no circumstances feed them bread and/or milk as their systems cannot digest this. Hedgehogs are a very endangered species and are well worth having as visitors to your garden as they are the “gardener’s” best friend as they eat what we regard as “pests”. Please help our little hogs if you can.

Hedgehog

Hedgehog is very much a people dog. He gets to know you pretty quickly and gives you the warmest welcome when he wags his entire body at the sight of you! He is a typical terrier who is always on the go and exploring. We are looking for someone with terrier experience.

Hedgehog is looking for a home with a terrier proof garden (6ft fence with no gaps) This little lad will need to be the only pet in the household. He cannot be introduced to other dogs so having quiet areas to walk is essential. He must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public due to this. He can be left for a couple of hours for but prefers having someone around for most of the day. His new owners will have the ongoing support of our behaviour team. Hedgehog would love to live with older children (over 16 years) who can assist with his training. Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre, 315 Hamilton Road, Uddingston, Glasgow, G71 7SL.
