We’ve already been asked about the November Fireworks displays, so here are the ones we know about so far. On Friday 2nd November, Kilbarchan’s Fireworks Display is at Kilbarchan Park from 7.30pm. There’s two on Saturday 3rd November: The Bishopton Scout Group Fireworks display is at the RoF Car Park, Bishopton, gates open 6.30pm, display starts 7.30pm. Kilmacolm Bonfire and Fireworks is at Knapps, gates open at 4.30pm, bonfire lit 6pm. If you are involved in any other events, please send us details for our November issue. In other news, at Houston Road Park, Bridge of Weir United FC has proposed an asset transfer for the unused pavilion and football pitch which the Club hopes will boost their development and allow local youth teams to play home matches in their own park. Bridge of Weir Community Council are in support of this project. Sadly, the British Legion has closed its Bridge of Weir branch, which caused the annual flower show to be cancelled at the last minute. Brighter Bridge of Weir also hold their annual Fun Casino Night there and with no suitable alternative available this too has been cancelled. However, they tell me they have another venue organised for next year, and meantime, they will be holding a preChristmas Pop-up Stall in Livery Walk early in November - watch this space! This also affects the Christmas Lights switch on event and Bridge of Weir Community Council welcome any suggestions for a venue - please contact them through their Facebook page. In Kilmacolm, there will be roadworks on Knockbuckle Road starting on 4th October, a speed survey on Port Glasgow Road in January and drainage works to reduce flooding on the footpath at Lochwinnoch Road. BTW, did you know that the current Twenty’s Plenty policy is only advisory and not a statutory limit? It is hoped that the current Transport Bill which is passing through Holyrood will eventually give Twenty’s Plenty statutory legal backing. A planning application from Turnberry Homes for a residential development at the former Struthers site in Church Street Lochwinnoch was approved at the recent Renfrewshire Housing and Planning Board meeting. While it is very sad that the original Struthers building will be lost, I’m sure villagers will be pleased to see something finally being done to the site. I hear the developers have responded positively to the issues and concerns raised by villagers in the consideration of the application. I know it’s early days still, but anyone thinking of getting a pet for Christmas please stop and think first. A puppy or kitten is adorable, but consider the time and cost a pet will involve. Too many shelters end up full or young animals in the months after the festive season. As an alternative, would you consider a senior pet? Older cats and dogs get overlooked in shelters all the time, when in fact they can make wonderful pets. An older dog is especially good for those of us less able to get out for long walks. And from personal experience, a rescued pet becomes an incredibly loving member of the family.

In the next few weeks we’ll get all the Christmas event details coming in. With the Santa Sleigh, lights switch-ons and Christmas Fairs, there will be plenty of events to get us into the festive spirit. And remember we have lots of lovely shops in the local villages to browse for your Christmas shopping. Research shows that shopping locally is of huge benefit to the community. For every £100 spent locally, around £50 goes back into the local economy. The shop owners employ local people, and they and their staff will be spending their local money in other local businesses. And you certainly get lots more originality and personality when shopping locally. Why not give it a try and see how much fun you can have!
