Scotland Wins Fishing Gold
Cucina Minucci Cup - Sunday 29th July
The Scottish Youth International Fly Fishing team won Gold this month at the Home International Fly Fishing Championship which was held at Draycote Water, near Rugby, on Wednesday 1st August. The 14 strong U18 team went head to head with their counterparts from England, Ireland and Wales. Each angler was drawn to fish in pairs against a competitor from one of the other countries. After 7 hours of fishing across the 600 acre water, the winners were decided by weight of fish caught. The winning margin was one of the narrowest of all times, being less than 3lbs with Scotland nudging England out to take top spot. Wales were third and Ireland fourth.
What to say - it was a driech damp cold windless day but we shouldn’t be complaining after our amazing recent spell of good weather. Despite the weather 10 cadets were out prior to the racing but it was a pity that they got so cold and wet which deterred all but hardy cadet Calum Simmonds from taking part in the racing, We managed to have eight boats taking part although only four survived to the end of the day.. The winners were: 1st Peter Collings and Ally - RS200 2nd Jon Hasler and Alice Patterson - Club RS Vision Joint 3rd place - Brian Young and Alan Falconer (RS Vision) and Steve Davison and Dawn Kyne [GP14). Although it was agreed Brian and Alan should have 3rd place as they achieved a place higher in the 4th race. Many thanks to Gillian Shearer for the photos. Thanks also to Race Officer Jan and those who helped in the club house with all the food. Spare a thought for those members taking part in the GP14 worlds down in Cornwall where only 1 boat went out for the training day and racing was abandoned because of 50mph winds! Many thanks to our sponsors for the day Cucina Minucci at The Junction, Lochwinnoch.
J.G.Fleming Bowling Club On Sunday 8th July John G. Fleming Bowling Club in Houston hosted their Annual Charity Day and Ladies bowls competition. Thank you to the 64 ladies who took part in the competition, an even bigger thank you to everyone who very generously donated raffle prizes and home baking, and an equally big thank you to all those who purchased raffle tickets and home baking items.
David Cruickshank, aged 14 from Lochwinnoch, won his first international cap at the event. Not only did David beat his boat partner, he also landed the heaviest fish of all 56 anglers at the event winning him the Ian Jones Memorial Trophy on top of his Gold Medal. This meant he landed the heaviest fish for team Scotland winning the Stirling Council Trophy as well. David hopes to qualify for the Scotland Team again next year through his performance at the Scottish Youth Championships which will be held at Lake of Menteith and Carron Valley Reservoir in August and September. It is Scotland’s turn to host the International event next year and he is hoping to defend the title and win a further Gold medal on home water.
