Bridge of Weir Festival Committee

. . . Bishopton, Langbank & Bridge of Weir . . .

The next meeting of the Festival Committee will be held in the Cargill Hall on Tuesday 11th September at 7.30pm. Due to a number of the committee stepping down, we are asking anyone who would be interested in helping to organise and promote next year’s Gala Day 2019 to please attend this meeting. The Festival Committee organises Festival Week including Gala Day and the annual Santa Sleigh. These events have been running for many years, but if enough volunteers cannot be found, they are in danger of stopping. Originally organised by the Rotary Club, followed by Community Council, Bridge of Weir Gala Day has been run by the Festival Committee, formed by Gordon Lethorn 17 years ago. Your time commitment would be to attend the AGM in February, and meetings every month except June, July, August and December. Meetings are usually about 2 hours long, and outwith meetings individuals put in as much time as they want, or if they’re doing a specific job, they put in as much time as it takes to get the job done. The roles needing filled are Festival Co-ordinator, Secretary and Treasurer, as well as general member positions. The Festival Co-Coordinator does most of the promotional work, putting together the programme and generally making sure everyone is doing what’s required. The Secretary takes minutes of the meetings, booking of accommodation for meetings, etc., organises any forms which are required to be filled in from the local Council, organises the Gala Queen’s diary, stall applications for Gala Day, etc.. On Gala Day the Secretary also does the stage duties. The Treasurer pays the bills, invoices businesses for their adverts in the Gala Day programme and generally looks after the finances to make sure we cover the costs of Gala Day and the Santa Sleigh. They will also organise the procurement of sweets for the Santa Sleigh. On Gala Day everyone just mucks in together, manning the gates, making sure stalls are up, any logistical stuff, litter picking, basically whatever is required. For the Santa Sleigh which runs over 15 nights we again just all muck in together, you may be doing collections at doors, you maybe driving the vehicle, or you might even be Santa! We’re a very friendly bunch, so if you would like to get involved, come along to our meeting to find out more. bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir

Freeland Messy Cafe

Freeland Messy Cafe is back on Saturday 15th September from 2pm - 4pm in Freeland Church halls. We will have a harvest theme telling the Parable of the Sower. There will be drinks and home baking throughout with some harvest based activities, the story and some songs. All welcome. Please bring a donation for the local food bank. Please keep Sunday 9th December free when we hope to have our annual Christingle service. Messy Cafe is for all ages and people are welcome to come for the whole time or just pop in briefly if you have other commitments. The cake is very nice!

Cllr James MacLaren ROADWORKS: The council has been busy resurfacing a number of the roads in Renfrewshire while the sun shines, but planning this doesn’t appear to have been a high priority as residents of Houston Rd, Bridge of Weir will attest to. Chaos ensued as buses were rerouted avoiding the village all together and parents had major difficulty getting their children to and from school and residents were left in limbo. Diversions might be ok for town centres where alternative roads close by can be used but villagers have to travel several miles when roads get closed there. A much better solution would have been to work on one side of the road at a time or perhaps do the work overnight. DVLA REMINDER: If you have a busy life then sometimes technology can come to your aid. I came across this MOT reminder this week from the DVLA at www. gov.uk/mot-reminder. If your garage does not send out a reminder then the DVLA can do this for you. REFUSE COLLECTIONS: Concern has been raised by people with incontinent parents and families with babies that their bins will get very smelly if left for three weeks without being emptied. I have raised this point with Cleansing but am told that they will not be undertaking more frequent collections, however larger bins can be provided in certain circumstances. LEAFLET: I and a number of helpers are distributing an In Touch leaflet in my ward which will hopefully let people who don’t read this column know what I have been up to recently. Other Conservative councillors are putting out their own leaflet. If you fancy lending a hand then I would be grateful for assistance and please contact me.
