Introduction

This significant annual event will again be held under the auspices of and in partnership with the African Union Commission and Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR) Botswana, with the goal of advancing the Africa Mining Vision.

The 5th Africa Mining Summit taking place from 24th - 25th September 2019 in Gaborone, Botswana, offers a more intimate way of gaining new opportunities and customers from that of the ‘Big’ Indaba’s, exhibitions and conferences. Africa Mining Summit enables more networking and face time through longer refreshment and lunch breaks, dedicated networking and exhibiting zones, a cultural dinner and pre-scheduled match making meetings using our bespoke ‘meeting scheduling software’.

The event brings together government ministries, mining corporates, investors and suppliers in the mining industry to discuss opportunities for countries and the industry.

The premise of the event is to create a platform for government ministries, mining corporates, investors and suppliers to discuss opportunities, attract investment and create new trading partners.

Those that attended last year agree that this is now their preferred deal making platform for mining opportunities in Africa. The event brings together suppliers who are looking to sell to the mining corporates, mining corporates who seek investment, investors who want to strike deals and government ministers who engage all groups to discuss new opportunities in their countries.

The AMS18 was described by our Patron, the African Union Commission (AUC), as an ‘Institution’ growing from strength to strength. Supported by the AUC the AMS is missioned to generate alignment and understanding between member states Ministers and ministries of Mines and Energy with the private sector investment community, and to join these key stakeholders in Africa to engage formally in developing and shaping exploitation of Africa’s continental & coastal natural resources and related industrial profile.

The AMS event stands out as the only pan-African platform for Policy debate and for mobilising the private sector within the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) as a ‘Blueprint for Structural Transfer of African Economies’; and that the Private Sector Compact (PSC) is under execution as a tool to facilitate dialogue to reduce and share risk created within the African Minerals Governance Framework (AMGF).

Founded then on these initiatives, the mining & minerals development sector in Africa should continue to benefit significantly from market commodity positioning as we move in to 2019 and beyond. The clear investment trend in hard assets that are physical and tradeable, including inter-alia infrastructure and energy related commodities, like Copper and Zinc, both of which are already in

or close to supply/demand deficit, Battery Metals (Cobalt, Nickel, Vanadium, Lithium & Manganese) and/or the Junior Mining Equities that hold such assets or the technologies to enhance them.

This therefore continues to offer investors and all potential beneficial stakeholders on the continent strong fundamentals in the Mining and Energy business sector and in the progressive project developments that are to be found only in Africa.

Accordingly, I am expecting a larger than ever attendance to the AMS19 to hear from and interact with the top leaders of Mining Investment and Operator companies on the continent.

GRV Global runs one of the only truly pan-African mining events where high-level delegates such as government representatives from established and emerging mining economies, mining executives, financiers and suppliers come together over a two-day period to engage in a series of highly focused thematic sessions and robust discussions. Scheduled alongside keynote addresses and panel discussions is a number of networking events and ‘match-making’ meetings, giving delegates the opportunity to engage directly on matters of mutual interest. This model allows for high-level as well as deep, authentic, conversations on mining in Africa, whether it be on financing the next project, engaging with the relevant ministry or identifying the breakthrough technologies available to safely and sustainably grow a business.

On behalf of GRV Global and the African Union Commission (‘AUC’), it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 African Mining Summit. Now in its fifth year, the event has grown from year to year as word has permeated throughout the mining industry on the strategic value of the summit, but it still remains intimate in that meaningful face-to-face conversations can be held across all aspects of the mining value chain and tangible outcomes achieved.

There are many themes dominating African mining at the moment and probably one of the more important ones, which echoes HE Albert Muchanga’s keynote address at the 2018 summit, is that of meaningful stakeholder collaboration. Whilst we are all mindful of driving shareholder value, this cannot be done at the expense of the communities in which the mines are based, nor at the expense of governments and their fiscal authorities. Mining by its very nature is a dangerous business and the strive towards zero harm must be front of mind for mining executives and operators alike. This along with environmental responsibility and the social licence to operate contribute to the realisation on meaningful triple bottom line achievement.

However, all of the above is not possible without financing and a transparent, fair and enabling regulatory environment. Africa is rich in most mineral resources, the potential of which is not being optimally exploited for a number of reasons including excessive

bureaucracy associated with permitting and access to capital owing to a perception of excessive political risk on the part of western funders. The conduct of business in Africa will not be possible in the absence of transparent, fair and simple regulatory environments, and competitive fiscal regimes with less onerous conditions specifically around mineral nationalism, through royalties and free carry stakes, which significantly dilute the value of projects to funders, and effectively turn off small to medium sized projects which cannot bear these costs.

Nearly all of the exploration capital and most of the mining development capital comes from outside of Africa from the main financial centres of the UK, Canada and Australia. The shared vision among the AMS 2019 delegates should include finding ways of making Africa more competitive for business and attracting African capital to fund African mining projects.

The mining industry has again been faced with a year of challenges and uncertainties, for instance the impacts of Brexit, and the cooling of global economies aligned with increasing interest rates and increased uncertainty has had consequences on the broader appetite for financing of new mining projects. On a more positive note, the conversion of the auto industry to electric technologies will result in substantial demand for metals in which Africa is rich including lithium and cobalt, with the benefits that will flow back to the continent, producing countries and communities.

The residential facility was donated by Debswana Jwaneng mine as part of its social responsibility to the community. The centre which accommodates children from birth to 18 years old was named after Miss Mpule Kwelagobe who won miss universe in 1999.

Over the last two years we have raised nearly USD 3,000, which has been used to replace all the curtains in the houses and general maintenance and hope to beat that total this year for further improvements.
