Usiglian del Vescovo. Microclima ideale e terreno unico sulle colline della Valdera An ideal micro-climate and a unique soil on the Valdera hills Il nome, Usiglian del Vescovo, richiama il possedimento dell’alto prelato pisano nel secolo XI, quando Palaia era invece di competenza del Vescovo di Lucca: storie di campanile che adesso, a distanza di mille anni e con Usigliano ancora piccolo e spopolato borgo contadino sulle colline della Valdera in prossimità della costa tirrenica, testimoniano la tradizione rurale della zona. La tenuta occupa una superficie di circa 160 ettari con 22 ettari di vigneti, in fase di espansione, e 15 di uliveti con 3.000 piante ed ha al centro proprio la villa di Usigliano, residenza padronale a cui faceva riferimento l’insieme dei poderi e dei casali che adesso danno il nome ad alcuni dei vigneti. Usiglian del Vescovo arriva da un profondo intervento di rinnovamento che ha comportato tra l’altro la costruzione di una nuova cantina, con reparti di vinificazione, stoccaggio, affinamento in bottiglia a temperatura controllata e linea d’imbottigliamento, costruiti con le più moderne tecniche. E’ stata ristrutturata anche la cantina storica e sono stati completamente rinnovati i vigneti, che si estendono con eleganza su profili di origine pliocenica corrispondenti all’innalzamento di una piana costiera ed alluvionale ricca in fossili marini: da qui la composizione del suolo che varia dal sabbioso-limoso al medio impasto conferendo una caratteristica unica ai vini rispetto per esempio ai più tannici bolgheresi. L’esposizione garantisce un microclima favorevole alla viticoltura, con piovosità regolare, una ventilazione costante e con estati calde mitigate dalle escursioni termiche notturne. I vigneti sono esposti prevalente a sud, sud-ovest e comprendono, oltre al Sangiovese, anche Merlot, Cabernet Savignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay e Viognier. Una volta raccolta e spremuta l’uva, il vino riposa in una cantina di invecchiamento ricavata dall’originario feudo medievale, che ospita fusti di piccola e grande capacità. Tra le etichette MilleEottantatre, IGT rosso in bottiglie numerate ed esclusive, Il Barbiglione, una selezione delle migliori uve di cantina, blend a base prevalentemente Syrah, e Il Grullaio, rosso ricavato da un blend di Cabernet Savignon e Merlot.
The name Usiglian del Vescovo reminds to the feud owned by the bishop of Pisa during the 11th century, while the bishop of Lucca was In possession of the feud of Palaia: small-town stories that now, one thousand years later, reveal, in the way Usigliano has remained a small rural village on the Valdera hills next to the Tyrrhenian coast, the rural tradition of the territory. The estate covers a total area of about 160 hectares with 22 hectares of vineyard, whose expansion is actually taking place, and 15 of olive grove with 3,000 olive trees. In the middle of it, the Villa of Usigliano, once the manor house that managed all the lands and farmhouses after which some vineyards have later been named. Usiglian del Vescovo is the result of a deep restoration work that also led to the creation of a new wine cellar, with rooms for wine-making, storage, bottle refining through a process of controlled temperature and bottling, all built according to the most ancient procedures. The historical cellar has been restored as well, and there has been a complete renovation of the vineyards, which elegantly stretch out on hills of Pliocene origin, created by the raising of a coastal, alluvial plain rich in marine fossils: here the soil’s composition varies from a sandy-loam to an average texture, and this is what makes these wines special and different from others like for example the more tannic Bolgheri ones. The exposure ensures a microclimate favorable to viticulture, with normal precipitation, constant air circulation and warm Summers with changes in the temperature range at night. Most of the vineyards are positioned facing the south or south-west, while the main varieties, beside Sangiovese, areMerlot, Cabernet Savignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay e Viognier. Once the grapes are harvested and pressed, the wine is left to mature in the ageing cellar that used to belong to the original medieval estate, where small and mediums barrels are placed. Among the many labels, MilleEottantatre, an IGT red wine in a limited edition of unique bottles, Il Barbiglione, a selection of the estate’s best grapes in a blend of mainly Syrah grapes, and the red Il Grullaio, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
