A dialogue between past and present text Matteo Parigi Bini 2007-2016. In these ten years we have spoken about the major changes in our city and we have witnessed a new, deeper dialogue between the contemporary and the magnificent past of Florence. We have done so in our style, meeting the people who have influenced or who have been the main figures of these changes told through the lens of our photographers. We have followed the birth of incredible new museums and the doubling of the exhibition space at the Uffizi, the revival of the old city centre in all its facets starting in piazza Duomo, as well as the development of new centres for art and culture, first and foremost Florence’s new Opera House. Before our very eyes great contemporary artists have left a mark on the most beautiful open-air museum in the world, striving to weave new dialogue with the great masters of the past. This issue is dedicated to the new dialogue which has restored Florence to its rightful status as one of the world capitals.

2007-2016. In questi dieci anni abbiamo raccontato i grandi cambiamenti della nostra città e visto nascere un nuovo e profondo dialogo tra la contemporaneità e il magnifico passato di Firenze. Lo abbiamo fatto con il nostro stile, incontrando le persone che hanno influenzato o sono state protagoniste di questi cambiamenti, raccontati attraverso le immagini dei nostri fotografi. Abbiamo seguito la nascita di incredibili musei ma anche il raddoppio delle sale espositive degli Uffizi, il rifiorire del centro storico in tutte le sue declinazioni a cominciare dalla piazza del Duomo, così come la nascita di nuovi poli di arte e cultura, primo tra tutti l’Opera di Firenze. Sotto i nostri occhi i grandi artisti contemporanei hanno contaminato il museo a cielo aperto più bello del mondo, cercando di tessere nuovi dialoghi con i maestri dell’antichità. Questo numero è dedicato proprio al nuovo dialogo che ha fatto ritornare Firenze ad essere una delle capitali del mondo.

Tell us about the way your love story to jazz music started.

I began to study classical music at 5, when I was very young. I got my first jazz album from my father. It was a collection of piano compositions played by Corea, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett e McCoy Tyner. This was the beginning of all.

If you would do a duet with any musician, of any time and from any country, which one would you choose and where would you play?

Wayne Shorter. The choice of the location would be of secondary importance.

Tell us about your latest album “Dark Flavor”, as you would describe it to a 6-year-old boy.

I think the best way to describe it would be to let him hear it.

After all, “Dark Flavor” is neither commercial nor rational at all.

If you close your eyes while playing the piano, what do you see?

The piano keyboard and my hands moving on it.

Your second greatest passion after Jazz.

I love watching movies and I really like to ski and play ping pong, but also to spend time with my friends and go out in the evenings.

As a child, what did you wish to become when you grew up?

I have always wanted to become a musician, I have no doubt about this.

What are you most proud of?

To know I have managed to give life to something by myself.

Ho cominciato a studiare la musica classica molto presto, avevo 5 anni. Fu mio padre a regalarmi il mio primo disco jazz, un’antologia di brani suonati dai pianisti Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett e McCoy Tyner. E nacque così la mia storia Se tu dovessi duettare con un musicista, senza barriere di tempo né di spazio, con chi e dove?

Ho sempre voluto fare il musicista, su questo non ci sono dubbi.

Where are you from and… why Florence?

I am French, Italian, from the Antilles and Indian. I have always lived in Florence.

What painting would you choose to inhabit,??

I would be one of the figures in the triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch.

Which of your jobs have you enjoyed the most?

The most recent one, with the architect Andy Martin. An enormous piece of art on a ceiling backlit with 18,000 LED lights in London.

What are some of your favorite places in Florence?

The roads behind Ponte Vecchio, Boboli gardens, the Strozzina, lunch at “Lola” in San Frediano, dinner at Sant’ Agostino 23, and Volume, Circolo Aurora and Le Murate.

What artists have had an impact on you?

In no particular order: the prints of Ukyjo-e, Pier Paolo Pasolini, David Lynch, Jacques Prévert, Federico Fellini, Francesca Woodman, Edward Hopper, Blu..

What are you scared of?

Indifference.

Do you remember when you first fell in love with music?

I was 12 and saw School of Rock with Jack Black on TV... the bit where he teaches Zack the guitar riffs that have made rock history! It was love at first sight.

The hardest part?

Transforming a hobby into a career isn’t easy. Chasing a dream brings joy but also hard work.

The turning point?

Moving to New York after four years at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. New York is an energetic city and inspires me to work harder.

What kind of music do you love to play and with whom? Do you have a group?

I grew up playing rock, then at Berklee I tried funk/pop/jazz and after I started my project, I focused on pop/dance music. It’s a solo project but with so many collaborations.

What do the critics love about your sound?

I think it’s the way I play the guitar and write songs. It’s a rather innovative live concept and a fresh sound.

New Yorkers versus Florentines?

Italians and Italian products are admired around the world and when I say I’m from Florence, I always get a lot of compliments about the lifestyle of the city, which of course, the Florentines contribute to.

Edoardo Ferragamo, son of Leonardo and grandson of the great Salvatore, is a young musician/talented producer making a name for himself in the United States. With his project EDO (Electronic Dance Organization), he left for New York a year ago to record his first single One Day Closer 54 Firenze | made in Tuscany

Ricordi il momento in cui sei rimasto folgorato dalla musica?

Avevo 12 anni, in tv davano School of rock con Jack Black… quando lui insegna al ragazzino (Zack) i grandi riff di chitarra che hanno fatto la storia del rock!! Fu amore a prima vista.

L’ostacolo più duro da affrontare?

Trasformare una vocazione in una professione non è stato facilissimo. Inseguire un sogno comporta gioie ma anche tante fatiche.

La svolta?

Trasferirmi a New York, dopo 4 anni al Berklee College of Music di Boston. New York è una citta super energetica e mi ispira a lavorare sempre di più.

Che genere ami suonare e con chi suoni, hai un gruppo?

Sono cresciuto suonando rock, poi al Berklee mi sono avvicinato al funk/pop/jazz e dopo ho iniziato il mio progetto basato sulla musica pop/dance, un progetto solista ma con tante collaborazioni.

Cosa apprezzano i critici del tuo lavoro?

Credo il mio modo di suonare la chitarra e scrivere canzoni. Oltre a un concept live piuttosto innovativo e un sound fresco.

Newyorkesi versus fiorentini?

Gli italiani e il made in Italy sono ammirati in tutto il mondo e quando dico che sono di Firenze ricevo sempre un sacco di apprezzamenti sul lifestyle della città, ovviamente i fiorentini ne contribuiscono.

When did the adventure of Les Petits Jouers start?

Five years ago, by chance. I used to live in Paris and a friend brought to us some Lego pieces to create some sculptures. I started playing with them and made the word ‘Love’. I didn’t know where to put it, so I stuck it on an old clutch bag I had in my house. It was a great success: people stopped me on the street to ask me where I had bought it!

Three words to describe your latest collection.

Elegant, refined, ethnic.

Where do your ideas come from?

I get them at night, when I am dreaming. Science fiction has always fascinated me, pushing me beyond my limits and making me see what is invisible at first sight A style icon of all time.

Your greatest satisfaction?

To see my project and my company growing, the enthusiasm of the people who work with me, the expression of the women who wear my creations.

Come nasce l’avventura di Les Petits Jouers?

Nasce per caso, 5 anni fa. Vivevo a Parigi e un amico portò dei pezzi di lego a casa per costruire delle sculture. Io iniziai a giocarci e creai la scritta Love. Non sapendo dove metterla decisi di incollarla su una vecchia pochette che avevo a casa. È stato subito un grandissimo successo, la gente mi fermava per la strada chiedendomi dove l’avessi comprata!

La tua ultima collezione in tre aggettivi.

Elegante, ricercata, etnica.

Dove nascono le idee?

Durante la notte, sognando. La fantascienza mi affascina da sempre, mi spinge a superare i miei limiti e a vedere quello che è invisibile.

The decorations of the Egyptian tombs. I discovered them when I was little, thanks to my father, an art lover.

Afro Basaldella, for the great colour poem that his works convey.

A painting by Burri. I’m attracted to the richness he can express with simple materials.

Your greatest satisfaction, personal and professional.

Being able to realize my dream alone. Professional, an encounter with an elderly lady who fell in love with my paintings, and did everything she could to be able to buy one.

One thing learned from the art, one from love, one from an old enemy.

Art is teaching me not to be afraid, and to feel free. From love, I’ve learned simplicity and from a beloved enemy, constancy in my work.

Personale, aver realizzato il mio sogno da solo. Professionale, l’incontro con una signora anziana, estranea al mondo dell’arte, che si innamorò dei miei quadri e fece il possibile per acquistarne uno.

L’arte mi sta insegnando a non avere paura, e a sentirmi libero.

Maddalena, how did you manage to enter the staff of Lady Gaga?

I often posted my works on the popstar’s social network (littlemonster.com). One dayLady Gaga’s art director kept contact with me and collaboration started.

Say something about your style and what has made Miss Germanotta fall in love with your creations.

I have attentively look at her in order to put the whole essence of this singer in all my drawings,avoiding at the same time everything that could bring people to associate my works to simple portraits or caricatures. It’s this, I think, what struck her of my work.

And what about your present? What are you projects and dreams?

I wish to become a graphic illustrator, a prominent art director.

Something Your favourite song.

I would say in this period my favourite songs are Lady Gaga’s The edge of glory, Amy Winehouse’s I know i’m no good and Gianna Nannini’s Ti voglio bene.

One day you wake up and you see you have been turned into a fantasy character. Who would you wish to be?

I prefer to dream of myself in natural and fantasy landscapes. The perfect running pace of Simba in The Lion King or about the Maddalena Carrai is a 21-year-old girl from Livorno. landscapes in Avatar or again the wonderful herd of buffalos in She is studying at the “Libera Accademia di Dances with Wolves, or the sounds in Baaria..

Spesso postavo i miei lavori sul social network della pop-star (littlemonster.com). Un giorno, dopo aver visto i miei disegni, l’art director di Lady Gaga mi ha contattata e così, semplicemente, è nata questa meravigliosa collaborazione.

Descrivici il tuo stile e quello che ha fatto innamorare Miss Germanotta delle tue creazioni.

Ho studiato attentamente la cantante e sono riuscita a capirne i movimenti e le mimiche, riuscendo cosi a trarre la sua essenza in ogni mio lavoro, rendendo il tutto libero dai vincoli di un normale ritratto o caricatura. Credo che questo abbia colpito il suo interesse.

E adesso? Progetti, sogni?

Diventare un’illustratrice, grafica, art director affermata. A dir la verità il mio progetto è quello di cercare di rendere le mie opere e le mie idee complete in un ambito multimediale più vasto cercando di offrire al pubblico un’esperienza completa.

La tua canzone preferita The edge of glory di Lady Gaga, I know i’m no good di Amy Winehouse e Ti voglio bene di Gianna Nannini.

Una mattina ti svegli e sei un personaggio della tua fantasia. Chi vorresti interpretare?

Spesso immagino la corsa perfetta di Simba nel Re Leone o i paesaggi di Avatar o ancora i meravigliosi bisonti di Balla coi Lupi, o i suoni di Baaria…

When and how was Blues Barber Shop created?

In 2014, following the love for this job and Blues music as well as the need of creating in Florence a unique place completely devoted to men’s universe.

A cult service?

The American style shaving: a true 45-minute relax treatment characterized by the alternation of hot and cold cloths for a state-of-the-art shaving ritual.

The strangest request someone has made to you until today?

It will sound funny, but someone asked me to have his beard dyed.. Just guess what my answer was.

That our barber’s shop would become a reference point.

Il mondo del barbiere è costituito da una ritualità e gesti che si ripetono uguali a se stessi. Quello che oggi contraddistingue questo antico mestiere è la contaminazione tra stili e un’attenta ricerca nei prodotti utilizzati.

Quando e come nasce Blues Barber Shop?

Nel 2014, dalla passione per questo mestiere, per la musica Blues e dall’esigenza di creare a Firenze un luogo esclusivo che mettesse al centro l’universo maschile.

La rasatura in stile Americano: un vero e proprio servizio relax, dalla durata di 45 minuti, che prevede un’alternanza di panni caldi e freddi per una rasatura fatta ad arte.

Very happy, but it is also a serious responsibility: I always have to make sure I meet all people’s expectations.

Breakfast at home, lunch in the dehor of the Odeon Bistro in Piazza Strozzi, a coffee at Rivoir around 5 p.m. and dinner at Vecchia Bettola.

Who did you want to become when you were a child?

Hairdresser, veterinary, teacher, gymnast or Brook Shields in The Blue Lagoon. Until I realized fashion would have been the right direction.

You just started university. What did you choose, wine or art?

In late August, my choices were Economics and Political Science!

Then, in the first few days of September, the wine harvest started and I changed my mind: I chose wine.

Between the first harvest and this last one, what can you tell us?

I have a sketchy memory of past harvests. This year I was at Ama from start to finish. It was of very good quality but limited quantity.

Your favourite artwork at Ama, and why?

I believe the main artwork at Ama is the project itself. In fact, every artist contributes to the realisation of a vision that surpasses each single installation. That’s why Ama is unique.

Describe in three adjectives the wine you love most?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned at the winery it’s the fundamental importance of grape variety characteristics. For this reason, rather than a wine I love the most, there’s a variety I really like: Sangiovese. It’s emblematic of the Tuscan tradition, elegant and powerful at the same time and is perfect for composing both simple and complex wines.

Best attributes of your Mum and Dad, two stars...

The funniest thing is that their strengths balance each other out: Dad has great rationality, Mum, creativity and madness.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I will be even balder than I already am...

Ti sei appena iscritto all’Università, cosa hai scelto, vino o arte?

Le mie ipotesi, a fine agosto, erano… Economia e Scienze politiche! Poi, i primi giorni di settembre, è iniziata la vendemmia e ho cambiato idea: ho scelto il vino.

La prima vendemmia e questa ultima, ce le racconti?

Ho un ricordo abbastanza frammentato delle vendemmie passate.

Quest’anno sono stato a Ama dall’inizio alla fine. Posso dire che è stata di buonissima qualità ma di quantità ridotta.

La tua opera preferita ad Ama e perché?

Credo che l’opera principale di Ama sia il progetto in sé: ogni artista infatti contribuisce alla realizzazione di una visione che supera ogni singola installazione. Questo è il motivo dell’unicità di Ama. Raccontaci in tre aggettivi, da addetto ai lavori, il vostro vino che ami di più?

Se c’è una cosa che ho imparato in cantina è la fondamentale importanza delle sfaccettature delle varietà di uva. Per questo motivo, piuttosto di esserci un vino che amo di più, c’è una varietà che mi piace tanto: il Sangiovese. È emblematico della tradizione toscana, è elegante e potente allo stesso tempo ed è perfetto per comporre sia vini semplici sia vini complessi.

Il pregio più grande di mamma e papà, due fuoriclasse…

La cosa più divertente è che i loro pregi si bilanciano a vicenda: babbo ci mette la razionalità, mamma la creatività e la pazzia.

Come ti vedi tra 10 anni?

Sarò ancora più stempiato di quanto non sia già…

How did your passion for art begin?

When I was a child, I made up stories and tried to act them out. I experimented and used different materials to transform my body. It’s funny – I haven’t changed!

Florence. Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro: your cities. Where do you feel at home and why?

My work was born and developed in Tuscany. During the past six years, after I moved to California and later to Brazil, it absorbed international contaminations. The motor of all this is certainly curiosity! However, I must admit that the condition of being rootless has created a conflict in me, so I have decided to dedicate one of my next projects to this theme of roots.

Which media do you prefer to express yourself?

The different means serve, in just a many phases, to say the same thing.

Drawing as an idea, sculpture as a mold, performance as action; consequently, video as an instrument of documentation and photography as the final image.

Myths, superstitions, rituals and shamanic traditions... tell us about your art?

Through symbolic elaboration of popular traditions and metropolitan legends linked to different places in the world, I have generated an archive of collective mythologies that oppose mass production of myths and images. Stories and legends become an expression of an archetypical concept of human fears that have lasted from the past down to the contemporary era.

Come è iniziata la tua passione per l’arte?

Quando ero bambina immaginavo delle storie e cercavo di metterle in scena, attraverso la ricerca e l’utilizzo di materiali diversi trasformavo il mio corpo. E’ curioso – non sono cambiata!

Firenze, Los Angeles e Rio de Janeiro: le tue città. Dove ti senti a casa e perché?

Il mio lavoro è nato e si è sviluppato in Toscana. Negli ultimi sei anni, in seguito al mio trasferimento in California e più tardi in Brasile, ha subito contaminazioni internazionali. Il motore di tutto questo è sicuramente la curiosità! Ma devo ammettere che la condizione di “sradicamento”ha creato in me un certo conflitto, così ho deciso di dedicare a questo tema delle radici uno dei miei prossimi progetti.

Quali sono i media con cui ami di più esprimerti?

I diversi mezzi servono, in altrettante fasi, a dire la stessa cosa. Il disegno come idea, la scultura come matrice, la performance come azione e di conseguenza il video come strumento di documentazione e la fotografia come immagine finita.

Miti, superstizioni, rituali e tradizioni sciamaniche… ci racconti la tua arte?

Attraverso la rielaborazione simbolica di tradizioni popolari e leggende metropolitane legate a diversi luoghi del mondo, ho generato così un archivio di mitologie collettive che si oppongono alla produzione di massa di miti e immagini. Storie e leggende diventano espressioni di un’idea archetipica delle paure umane che dal passato perdurano fino all’epoca contemporanea.

Vive per buona parte dell’anno nella villa Il Palagio, trenta chilometri a sud di Firenze, che considera la sua vera casa, quella dove ama vivere con la moglie Trudie Styler, i sei figli, il cane, il cavallo. In mezzo a ettari e ettari di ulivi, cipressi, querceti. “Nei boschi in Toscana ho ritrovato la poesia. D’altra parte non sono il primo inglese che s’innamora di questa campagna - dice Sting -. Sono un orgoglioso residente della Toscana, molto consapevole dell’importanza di questa regione nella cultura mondiale, dagli etruschi al rinascimento fino a oggi.”

“Mio padre racconta sempre che la sua storia di regista è iniziata a Firenze, proprio qui con lui ho girato La crisi di Stendhal. Abbiamo passato settimane tra il piazzale degli Uffizi e il museo, dove salivamo per girare le scene. E poi è fiorentina mia madre, Daria Nicolodi, mia zia Fiamma ci abita da sempre. Ed è anche questo il richiamo continuo con la città, dove amo girellare per negozi e musei. La scelta è infinita, sempre stuzzicante.”

In Florence, Daniel Day-Lewis (two-time Oscar winner) filmed Room with a View. It was 1985. Fifteen years later his cobbler sent him to Florence to try on a shoe. Daniel met Stefano Bemer, the greatest craftsman who made bespoke shoes. His store is in San Frediano, in the heart of artisan Florence. “I felt like doing other things”, and so he asked Stephen to teach him. “I’ve always been good with my hands,” he says proudly.

He moved to the city with his wife and daughter, declining numerous job offers. But one day, Martin Scorsese arrived in Florence to ask him to be in of New York: he was to play The Butcher. And shoemaker’s Gangs so he bid goodbye to his shoemaker’s shop, where shop perhaps he found himself.

Il negozio è in San Frediano, nel cuore della Firenze artigiana. “Sentivo di voler fare altre cose”, e chiede a Stefano di insegnargli come si fa. “Sono sempre stato bravo a usare le mani per lavorare”, dice con orgoglio. Si trasferisce con moglie e figlia, rinuncia a molte proposte di lavoro. Ma un giorno sbarca a Firenze Martin Scorsese per chiedergli di girare Gangs of New York: lui sarà The Butcher, il macellaio. E addio alla bottega di calzolaio dove forse ha imparato a ritrovare se stesso.

Lorenzo Cherubini, Jovanotti, a life of extraordinary things. He started recording in 1988. The success of carefree boy, a ferryman of hip hop. Then world music, heavy songs and after he turned 40, he gifted us Safari, the highest-selling album in Italy in 2008.

When he’s not touring, he spends his time in Cortona with Francesca and their Teresa. And it’s here, in his Medici fortress, that Lorenzo decided to create the Orlando Lab project, a place for contemporary culture.

Lorenzo Cherubini, Jovanotti, una vita di cose straordinarie. L’inizio dell’attività discografica nel 1988.

Il successo di ragazzo spensierato, traghettatore dell’hip hop. Poi la world music, le canzoni impegnate e, superati i quarant’anni, ci regala Safari, il disco più venduto in Italia nel 2008.

Quando non è in tour, trascorre a Cortona tutto il suo tempo, con Francesca e la loro Teresa. Ed è ancora qui, nella fortezza medicea in cima al paese, che Lorenzo ha deciso di dar vita al progetto Orlando Lab, un luogo per la cultura contemporanea.

La tua parola d’ordine?

“Mi ha sempre colpito il fatto che Mosè fosse balbuziente. Significa che tutto è possibile, basta volerlo. Col benestare del Padreterno, naturalmente.”

text Teresa Favi photo Bayerische Staatsoper - N.9 Winter 2009 Zubin Mehta, the beloved conductor of Florence’s Maggio Musicale L’amatissima bacchetta del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino His magnetic beauty as a young man is legendary, as are his performances at the wand’s tip. Zubin Mehta is a charming octogenarian with amber skin, a ready wit and extraordinary intelligence. He’s a star without borders, welcomed on the podium of the best orchestras in the world. He was about 20 when he first directed the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin’s shortly afterwards. Since 1985 he’s been the principal conductor at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, which he calls “his Italian family.”

What has Florence given you?

“She opened her arms to me when I was a young, unknown and inexperienced conductor. With her “Music has beauty, she conquered me and helped me grow.”

Aveva poco più di vent’anni quando diresse per la prima volta i Wiener Philharmoniker e poco dopo i Berliner.

“Mi ha spalancato le sue braccia quando ero un giovane direttore sconosciuto e inesperto. Con la sua bellezza mi ha conquistato e mi ha aiutato a crescere.”

The one that until recently you watched playing in the street and then suddenly found on TV. The Lakers champion, one of the brightest NBA stars. Kobe’s next-door neighbour is on the road from Pistoia to Abetone.

Bryant House was Cireglio, when Joe, Kobe’s father, played for Pistoia. It was the turn of the ‘80s and ‘90s. For Kobe, Italy remains close to his heart, deeply Tuscan, complete with a C intake.

“I often look back - says Kobe - and with great pleasure, I look back to my time in Tuscany. I’m very attached to this territory, it was really important to me.

Those childhood years have become an unforgettable part of my life.”

Conversation with the Master on his return to Teatro del Maggio Dialogo con il Maestro, in occasione del suo ritorno al Teatro del Maggio Both international and popular he has always been profoundly attached to Florence, with which he has shared irritations and discussions. As if he’d never left these streets, these theaters. Yet Franco Zeffirelli did leave, for the rest of his life. When he was still very young, he left Florence for Rome, as assistant director to Visconti in Senso and La Terra Trema. Then there was The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet and international success. Director of films, television, theater and opera, as well as set and costume designer, he is an all-round artist. An added value is his esthetic elegance, his ability to reconstruct the past in search of authentic passions. Very sweet, simple but determined, she’s excited when she talks about her family, her passion for cinema.

Paolo Virzi has a great love for his city, Livorno.

“Tuscany is a beautiful land, full of poetry. Unique. Livorno is the ‘city of pirates’, damning, very much alive. Fascinating and unfortunate at the same time. It feeds Paolo’s desire to tell, she is his muse. Livorno immediately accepted me, we feel at home here.”

Da Sonia, la ragazza madre di Tutta la vita davanti, alla più combattiva Rossana di Questione di cuore di Francesca Archibugi, fino all’indimenticabile Anna in La prima cosa bella, ultima opera di Paolo Virzì (suo marito nella vita). Molto dolce, semplice ma determinata, emozionata quando parla della sua famiglia, della sua passione per il cinema.

Paolo Virzì ha un grande amore per la sua città, Livorno.

“La Toscana è una terra stupenda, ricca di poesia. Unica. Livorno è la ‘città dei pirati’, dannata, molto viva. Affascinante e disgraziata allo stesso tempo. Alimenta la voglia di raccontare di Paolo, è lei la sua musa ispiratrice.

His wife has helped him discover Italy Il sovrano da premio Oscar, ha scoperto l’Italia grazie alla moglie senese A real king’s speech, delivered by Colin Firth after his Oscar win for King George VI in The King’s Speech, the stuttering king, who challenged his fears to speak of dignity and freedom in the fight against Hitler.

In the most important speech of his life, Colin Firth paid tribute to his wife, the Anglo-Italian-American-Canadian Livia Giuggioli. “Everything beautiful that has happened to me - he said - happened because of her.”

Even his relationship with Italy, namely Tuscany, was born out of love. It was Livia, whose father was Tuscan Sienese and whom Firth married in 1997, that introduced him to this land.

“I never visit Florence without going to the Accademia - he says -then I like to wander aimlessly, have a coffee, travel in the streets, find restaurants.”

Just an ordinary guy Un uomo comune

The extraordinary charm of an extraordinarily modest actor Il fascino straordinario di un attore straordinariamente modesto Don’t be surprised if a charismatic actor like Jeremy Irons - who has had many successful theatre, film and television roles, each more complex and different than the last – earned numerous acclaim at an epic edition of the Tuscan Sun Festival in Cortona.

It’s a charm courted by directors like David Cronenberg (Dead Ringers and M. Butterfly), Steven Soderbergh (Kafka), Ridley Scott (Kingdom of Heaven) and many others including Franco Zeffirelli and Bernardo Bertolucci (who can forget Stealing Beauty?). With classic English aplomb, he simply cannot understand, after falling immediately in love with Cortona, how this land managed to survive war and time to experience wonderful remain unspoilt. It’s almost magical.

Non da stupirsi se un attore carismatico come Jeremy Irons - che si è cimentato con successo in teatro, al cinema e in televisione in ruoli tanto complessi quanto diversi tra loro - abbia avuto tanti consensi a un’epica edizione di Tuscan Sun Festival di Cortona. Fascino corteggiato da registi come David Cronenberg (Inseparabili, M. Butterfly), Steven Soderbergh (Delitti e segreti), Ridley Scott (Le Crociate) e molti altri tra cui Franco Zeffirelli e Bernardo Bertolucci (chi non ricorda Io ballo da sola?).

Classico aplomb di uomo inglese, lascia trasparire una certa emozione che lui, innamorato da subito di Cortona, non si capacita di come questa terra meravigliosa sia riuscita a sopravvivere alla guerra e al tempo mantenendosi così intatta.

Quasi magica.

Well, this evergreen star has been back in Florence after twenty-five years. We are looking forward to seeing Clever and her again.

She’s composed, precise like a harpsichord melody. She met the craziest painter and filmmaker on the British scene, Derek Jarman, who was struck: “Oh my God. I found it.” He had found the star of Caravaggio and six of his other films. She won an Oscar for her incredible depiction of a legal counsel in Michael Clayton. Many directors want her: Jim Jarmusch, Tim Roth, David Fincher, Wes Anderson. In Florence, Tilda promotes an exclusive project: Cloakroom, one of the events at Pitti Uomo 2015. A performance dedicated to the wardrobe, a small temple where our clothes welcome us, become a part of us.

One of Florence’s greatest concerts in recent history was his. It was 28 September 2012. In Piazza della Repubblica, 10,000 fans screamed. He, the Iguana, Iggy Pop, whose real name is James Newell Osterberg, spent the evening between microphones and smashed rods, almost entirely naked groupies on stage and repeatedly diving into the frenzied mob. For Florence, quite unexpected. For him, almost routine. Just one in forty years’ worth of incendiary shows, half-naked, squeezed in a pair of skintight jeans, with all his wrinkles and Indian fakir body. An hour was struck by and a half of primitive and visceral rock. Next year, turn 70. In many respects, he’s a survivor, the seeing myself he’ll Stooges, a distant memory.

Un’ora e mezza di rock primitivo e viscerale. Il prossimo anno compirà settant’anni: per molti aspetti, è un sopravvissuto, gli Stooges un lontano ricordo.

And now he’s back for the world premiere of the film. Along with director Ron Howard and writer Dan Brown, on whose novel the film is based.

Tom, what has your relationship with Florence been like?

“I haven’t seen Dante’s Inferno in Florence. But I have seen the birth of the Renaissance, the greatest architecture in human history. And also, the greatest ice cream!”

Tom, qual è stato il suo rapporto con Firenze?

“A Firenze non ho visto l’Inferno di Dante. Ho visto, piuttosto, la nascita del Rinascimento, la più grande architettura della storia dell’uomo. E anche il più grande gelato!”.

Una città che l’ha affascinato?

“Quando abbiamo fatto le riprese in piazza Signoria, ho fatto un sacco di fotografie alla piazza e a Palazzo Vecchio con il mio telefonino!”

Museums have changed, the way of thinking and looking at the exhibits have changed, new dialogues between past and present have opened just as the great places of the Florentine Renaissance were opened to the city. Florence is of humble descent, originating in the Roman era as the ford of the Arno River along the way leading from Rome to the Apennines and Lombardy.

Malaria was raging and settlements were perched high in the hills. It took the shape of a city at the beginning of the year 1000, when it slowly started spreading, and the built-up area was enclosed in a circle of walls that would be torn down only in the 19th century, when it became the capital of Italy. Internally, a grid of narrow and crowded streets, dotted with churches, convents, and prestigious palazzos developed extraordinarily when

Ma è con l’unità d’Italia che Firenze subì un radicale mutamento urbanistico e assunse quella fisionomia che mantiene ancora oggi. Con il trasferimento della capitale da Torino a Firenze si pose il problema di accogliere le nuove funzioni.

The Renaissance saw the emergence of a plethora of palaces the Gothic style flourished, the Palazzo Vecchio, the Loggia della Signoria, Orsanmichele, the Ponte Vecchio, and the church of Santa Maria Novella featuring an adorned façade. It was a novelty for that era: the façade of the cathedral was built only in 1887, and some churches still do not feature one. The Renaissance saw the emergence of a plethora of palaces, churches and public places, resulting from the wealth accumulated by merchants and Florentine bankers in a century that saw them expanding their power throughout Europe. Palazzo Rucellai, Palazzo Pitti, Palazzo Strozzi, to name but a few, and then a multitude of rather majestic buildings featuring the name 222 Firenze | made in Tuscany

families. Florence needed to be up to the task. The historic centre was demolished, giving way to the creation of the present Piazza della Repubblica. Certain streets in the triangle of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Cathedral and Piazza della Repubblica were enlarged.

Later the 16th century walls were torn down and a fashion avenue like the Champs Elisée in Paris flourished. New roads were built over the fields giving life to new neighbourhoods. Architect Poggi designed Viale dei Colli, the Avenue of the Hills - featuring magnificent views over the city from Piazzale Michelangelo - for the pleasure of those who enjoyed going for a panoramic walk in the hills.

imponente quando fiorisce il gotico e con esso la Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, Palazzo Vecchio, la Loggia della Signoria, Orsanmichele, il Ponte Vecchio, la chiesa di Santa Maria Novella viene ornata con la facciata (novità per l’epoca: la quella della cattedrale venne realizzata solo nel 1887, e alcune chiese ne sono ancora prive). E’ con il Rinascimento che la città esplode di palazzi, chiese, luoghi pubblici, frutto delle ricchezze accumulate dai commercianti e banchieri fiorentini in un secolo che li vide espandere la loro potenza in tutta Europa. Palazzo Rucellai, Palazzo Pitti, Palazzo Strozzi tanto per citarne alcuni, e poi

ministeri ma anche a ospitare ventimila funzionari ministeriali con le loro famiglie. C’era la necessità di rendere Firenze all’altezza del compito. Fu sventrato il centro storico e creata l’attuale piazza della Repubblica, ampliate alcune strade nel triangolo Palazzo Vecchio, Cattedrale, piazza della Repubblica. Poi furono demolite le mura cinquecentesche e sbocciò un viale alla moda degli Champs Elisée parigini. Dove allora erano campi nacquero nuove strade per lottizzazioni abitative. Si volle dare anche una passeggiata collinare e l’architetto Poggi realizzò il viale dei Colli con il magnifico affaccio sulla città del piazzale Michelangelo.

Our kitchen is a Florentine kitchen with all of the dishes being seasonal and local but presented with an aesthetic for today’s tastes.

THE END OF THE WORLD The Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art will reopen upon completion of the futuristic extension by architect Maurice Nio and the renovation of the original building by Italo Gamberini. In occasion of its reopening the Pecci Centre presents the exhibition The End of the World which, through the works of over 50 international artists, will be set up as a kind of exercise of distance, inciting us to view our present from a great distance.

Among the variuos novelties to be staged in September, there will be an enlarged and exclusive AREA OF VIP TABLES, the NEW DJ CONSOLLE, a space for ANIMATION AND SHOW for crazy parties, as in the tradition of the YAB, and a new indoor RESTAURANT whith a menu making an ideal haunt for diners, birthday and company parties.
