Franco Zeffirelli was a maestro in many ways, and one of them was definitely his unparalleled talent for understanding and glorifying women’s soul and beauty. For this reason, his life was imbued with the presence of the greatest female icons of film, theatre and opera. Their exquisite faces are the focus of Le Dive di Zeffirelli, an exhibition (open to the public) presented by Hotel Savoy in collaboration with the

sive hotel. From the sensuality of Anna Magnani in La Lupa to the extraordinary eyes of Elizabeth Taylor fixed on Richard Burton in The Taming of the Shrew, the much-loved Maria Callas and the most famous actress to play her, Fanny Ardant, who is sponsoring the exhibition and who spoke to us at the inauguration.

Tell us about your relationship with Zeffirelli.

I remember the time we spent together shooting Callas Forever as if it were yesterday. Being directed by Franco was a wonderful adventure, and I used to meet up with him every time I went back to Rome. He was an exceptionally cultured man with the soul of a child, always so passionate and excited. Just check out his library at the Zeffirelli Foundation - it’s full of novels, essays, books about painting, singing…

What was it like to play an icon like Callas?

I really admired her, but instead of playing the legend, I tried to get close to the artist, the woman who always aimed for the best, the absolute; who devoted herself completely to her art and was never conceited. Maria Callas’ greatest strength was her honesty.

What do you think of Le Dive di Zeffirelli and the hotel hosting the exhibition?

It’s always lovely to see episodes from Franco’s life illustrated by original photos. The faces of all these women sum up the way Franco worked and what he sought to bring out in his actresses, digging deep into their artists’ souls. Another thing that struck me are Franco’s sketches - one of which appears in the exhibition at the Savoy - which show his great talent for drawing too, tangible proof of his ability to give shape to dreams. And the hotel itself is wonderful, it’s a place you’d like to live in forever. I hope I’ll come back to make a film and get to stay here for a couple of months. Ci racconta del suo rapporto con Zeffirelli?

Ricordo il tempo trascorso insieme per girare Callas Forever come se fosse ieri. È stata una grande e bellissima avventura essere diretta da Franco e ogni volta che tornavo a Roma lo incontravo. Era un uomo molto colto con l’animo di un bambino, sempre così eccitato e appassionato. Basta guardare la sua biblioteca alla Fondazione Zeffirelli, piena di romanzi, saggi, libri di pittura, canto…

Com’è stato vestire i panni di un’icona come la Callas?

La ammiravo molto, piuttosto che alla leggenda, però, ho cercato di avvicinarmi all’artista, a questa donna che cercava sempre il meglio, l’assoluto e che si dava completamente alla sua arte, senza mai autocompiacersi. La grande forza di Maria Callas era l’onestà.

Una sua impressione sulla mostra Le Dive di Zeffirelli e l’Hotel che la ospita?

È sempre bello vedere pezzi di vita di Franco raccontati da fotografie d’autore. Tutti questi volti di donne sintetizzano il modo in cui Franco lavorava e cosa voleva che venisse fuori dalle interpreti delle sue opere, scavando a fondo delle loro anime artistiche. Una cosa poi che mi ha molto colpita sono i bozzetti che Franco realizzava, di cui uno si trova anche in mostra al Savoy, e che mi hanno fatto scoprire anche le sue grandi doti di disegnatore, prova tangibile della sua capacità di dare forma a un sogno. L’Hotel, poi, è bellissimo. È un albergo dove chiunque vorrebbe vivere sempre. Spero un giorno di tornare per un film e poterci stare per due mesi.
