“I still remember the exciting moment when my family and I were about to land in Florence, and we suddenly glimpsed the Dome of the Cathedral from the window of the plane. Amazing ... we were just a few meters from that world-famous symbol of the city. I give thanks every day for having the opportunity to experience this city’s richness, beauty and heritage “. The speaker is Ragini Gupta, United States Consul General stationed in Florence since July 2020. A New York lawyer, she joined the United States diplomatic service in 2002. She is married to a career diplomat and is the mother of two children aged 14 and 10. With great empathy and positivity, she opened the doors of the beautiful American Consulate, overlooking the Arno river.

Ms Gupta, what does being Consul General in Florence mean to you?

It means strengthening the already very close relations between us, between the American people, the United States of America and Tuscany. The priorities of my mandate are first and foremost the well-being and safety of American residents and also of the employees of the consulate. Another important objective, linked to the critical effects of the pandemic, is to promote and facilitate bilateral investments to stimulate the shared economic recovery. Another priority is to encourage the return of American students and tourists to Florence. In my opinion, our geostrategic partnership, already so important and fundamental, is based on a true and real friendship. This friendship is built on experiences, memories, relationships, tourism, study, cultural exchange, emigration, social and personal relationships between us.

Which Americans who have lived in Florence do you like to recall?

Being a diplomat, I remember the first American ambassador to Italy, George Marsh who was appointed to the post by President Abraham Lincoln. He lived in Florence at the time when it was the capital of the newly-founded Kingdom of Italy. Marsh loved both the city and the countryside - he was a great admirer “Ricordo ancora l’emozione del momento in cui io e la mia famiglia stavamo per atterrare a Firenze, e all’improvviso abbiamo intravisto dal finestrino dell’aereo la Cupola del Duomo… Incredibile… eravamo a pochi metri da quel simbolo della città che si vede ovunque nel mondo. Ringrazio ogni giorno di avere l’opportunità di sperimentare la ricchezza, bellezza, il patrimonio di questa città”. Chi parla è Ragini Gupta, Console Generale degli Stati Uniti di stanza a Firenze da luglio 2020. Avvocato newyorkese, entrata nel servizio diplomatico degli Stati Uniti dal 2002, è sposata con un diplomatico di carriera e madre di due figli di 14 e 10 anni. Un altro obiettivo importante, legato gli effetti critici della pandemia, è approfondire e facilitare gli investimenti bilaterali per spingere la ripresa economica condivisa. L’altra priorità è favorire il ritorno degli studenti e dei turisti americani a Firenze. Perché secondo me la nostra partnership geostrategica già così importante e fondamentale, poggia su un’amicizia vera e reale. Quest’amicizia è costruita dalle esperienze, memorie, rapporti, il turismo, lo studio, lo scambio culturale, l’emigrazione, i rapporti sociali e personali fra di noi.

Quali sono i personaggi americani che hanno vissuto a Firenze che le piace ricordare?

Essendo una diplomatica, ricordo il primo ambasciatore americano in Italia, George Marsh che ricevette questo incarico dal presidente Abraham Lincoln. Visse a Firenze che all’epoca era la capitale del neonato Regno d’Italia. Marsh amava sia la città che la campagna, era un grande estimatore di Vallombrosa, dei suoi boschi e dell’antica abbazia. Una cosa che condivido anch’io:

UFFIZI GALLERIES This is the museum where Botticelli’s Promavera is located. In 2021 it has come first in a list of the best museums and galleries in the world according to ‘Time Out’ magazine. ABBEY OF SAN MINIATO AL MONTE The Abbey of San Miniato al Monte is located above piazzale Michelangelo, in one of the highest points in the city. It is a masterpiece of Florentine Romanesque architecture. 2

VESPUCCI CHAPEL The Church of Ognissanti (or All Saints’ church) contains the alleged portrait of Amerigo Vespucci, the man who gave his name to the Americas. SAN MARCO MUSEUM This is famous for its large collection of paintings by Beato Angelico the painter friar who is one of the greatest artists of the early Renaissance. It is in the former Dominican convent where Fra Angelico designed frescoes for each of the 44 cells.

HILLS AROUND FLORENCE Florence, as well as the famous River Arno, lie in a basin surrounded by a number of hills, including the archeologically significant Fiesole, Bellosguardo, Settignano and Pian dei Giullari.

of Vallombrosa, its woods and the ancient abbey. Something I also share - I love the city but also everything around us. I am captivated by the natural beauty that surrounds Florence, and each weekend I like to explore new places in the countryside. In short, I often feel as if I am walking in George Marsh’s footsteps.

Florence is currently hosting an exhibition of works by Jeff Koons, one most esteemed American contemporary artists in the world. What do you admire about his art and his personality?

I lived in New York in the 80s and 90s, years in which Koons became a star, a ‘name’ - as they say in Italy - mentioned everywhere. Since then I have always loved his style, his spirit and upbeat message. In these rather dark times caused by the pandemic, the joy, wonder, and amazement that his works express are very important, and they transport us to a world where we can dream and recover in order to move forward. I think the Jeff Koons exhibition came to Florence at the right time.

Perhaps it also helped bring Americans back to the city.

I believe so, along with American art, American students and tourists are also coming back - the revival is already palpable.

Which are your favourite places in the city?

For me, especially during lockdown, the city became a living museum. Every day, to lift my spirits and draw inspiration, I took wonderful walks. The places that moved me the most are the basilicas of San Miniato, Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella and the dome of the Cathedral. I walked from one church to another to appreciate their beauty, thank the city, and breathe in the genius that reigns everywhere here in Florence. But I also really like museums: the best known, such as the Uffizi and the Accademia, but also the San Marco Museum and the Medici Chapels. The works preserved in Florentine churches and museums are the masterpieces I studied many years ago when I was a student. Art is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and a stimulus to improve ourselves.

Which are the American Consul’s favourite dishes?

Definitely “bistecca alla Fiorentina”, which I find irresistible, and pasta with wild boar sauce. I had never eaten it before and it is delicious, the flavour is incredible. My family and I love traditional dishes, but we also appreciate innovation in food and wine, so the gourmet cuisine best expressed in your starred restaurants. In Florence and Tuscany there is a food and wine ecosystem of the highest order. You eat well everywhere, whether it’s a Florentine steak in a trattoria or an innovative dish in a starred restaurant. adoro la città ma anche tutto quello che c’è intorno a noi. Sono molto affascinata dalle bellezze naturali che circondano Firenze. Ogni weekend mi piace andare alla scoperta di posti nuovi in campagna. Insomma, mi capita spesso di sentirmi nei panni di George Marsh.

Firenze, in questo periodo, ospita la mostra di Jeff Koons, uno degli artisti americani contemporanei più apprezzati nel mondo. Lei cosa ama della sua arte e della sua personalità?

Ho vissuto a New York negli anni ’80 e ’90, anni in cui Koons è diventato una star, un ‘nome’ - come si dice in Italia - citato ovunque. Da allora ho sempre amato il suo stile, lo spirito e il suo messaggio ottimista. In questi momenti un po’ bui a causa della pandemia, la gioia, la meraviglia, lo stupore che le sue opere esprimo sono molto importanti, e le sue opere ci trasportano in un mondo dove si può sognare e recuperare per poter andare avanti. Credo che la mostra di Jeff Koons sia arrivata al momento giusto a Firenze.

Forse è servita anche a far tornare anche gli americani in città?

Credo di sì, insieme all’arte americana stanno tornando gli studenti e i turisti americani… la rinascita è già palpabile.

Quali sono i suoi luoghi prediletti in città?

Per me, specialmente, durante il lockdown la città è diventata un museo vivente. Ogni giorno per sollevarmi e ispirarmi ho fatto delle incredibili camminate. I luoghi che mi hanno emozionata di più sono le basiliche di San Miniato al Monte, Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella e la cupola del Duomo… camminavo da una chiesa all’altra anche per apprezzare la bellezza e ringraziare la città; respirare il genio che aleggia ovunque qui a Firenze. Però mi piacciono molto anche i musei: i più noti, come gli Uffizi e l’Accademia, ma anche il Museo di San Marco e le Cappelle Medicee. Le opere conservate nelle chiese e musei fiorentini, sono i capolavori che ho studiato molti anni fa quando ero studentessa. L’arte è una fonte inesauribile di ispirazione e uno stimolo a migliorarci.

Quali sono i piatti preferiti dalla Console americana?

Sicuramente la bistecca alla fiorentina che trovo irresistibile e la pasta al ragù di cinghiale. Non l’avevo mai mangiato prima ed è squisito, ha un sapore incredibile. Io e la mia famiglia amiamo i piatti tradizionali, ma apprezziamo anche l’innovazione nell’enogastronomia, dunque la cucina gourmet espressa al meglio nei vostri ristoranti stellati. A Firenze e in Toscana c’è un ecosistema enogastronomico di altissimo livello. Si mangia benissimo ovunque, che sia una bistecca alla fiorentina in trattoria o un piatto di innovazione in un ristorante stellato.
