Our interview with Elio, conducted by Zubin Metha in “Peter and the Wolf” at the Nelson Mandela Forum La nostra intervista con Elio diretto da Zubin Metha in “Pierino e il lupo” al Nelson Mandela Forum For one night, on January 30, Elio will be performing for the Opera di Firenze Theater, at the Nelson Mandela Forum, accompanied by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino orchestra conducted by Maestro Zubin Mehta, in one of the most beloved musical stories of all times and for all ages, Peter and the Wolf by Prokof’ev. You will be performing as the narrator of the children’s story by Prokof’ev. Should we expect some surprises from you? Usually, with these performances, I prefer not to improvise, although my whole career has been based on improvisation. I prefer following the full score and written text to be as faithful to the original as possible. However, under Maestro Mehta’s direction, I will try to give my performance a more Florentine, “lampredottostyle” touch. What song by Elio e le storie tese would you have Zubin Mehta conduct? To keep to the subject, I would say Vitello dai piedi di balsa, another fairy-tale set to music, perhaps less noble than Prokof’ev’s, but equally popular with children. You have a classical music background. If you were to start all over again, would you pursue your studies at the college of music? Certainly. I would complete my studies all over again and then I would pursue another career path, exactly like I did the first time. In order to become a professional classical musician, one has to have an incredible amount of passion for the job, which I did not have at the time. I do now, though. What is the most evident difference between your music genre and the world of classical music? As far as I can see, classical music is a world where no mistake is forgiven. Instead, in my world, making mistakes is everything. Who is your favorite composer? I have more than one favorite composer, according to the era. Among the old school composers, I am very fond of Bach, Mozart and Rossini. But I also enjoy Kurt Weill and, among the contem-
Con un abile colpo di mano l’Opera di Firenze si appropria di Elio per una sera, quella del 30 gennaio, e sotto la direzione del Maestro Zubin Mehta, con l’orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, porta in scena al Nelson Mandela Forum uno dei brani più belli della storia della musica scritto da Prokof’ev per esseri umani da 3 a 100 anni, la favola di Pierino il Lupo. La sua parte è la voce narrante della fiaba, in scena insieme agli orchestrali. Dobbiamo aspettarci qualche sorpresa? In genere quando faccio cose di questo tipo tendo a non improvvisare, benché la mia carriera sia basata sull’improvvisazione. Preferisco seguire partitura e testo scritto per non togliere importanza all’originale. Però su indicazione del maestro Mehta cercherò di dare un’impronta più fiorentina, al lampredotto per così dire. Quale canzone di “Elio e le storie tese” farebbe dirigere a Zubin Mehta? Per rimanere in tema, direi Il vitello dai piedi di balsa, un’altra fiaba in musica forse un po’ meno nobile ma altrettanto apprezzata dai bambini. Lei nasce con una formazione musicale classica, se potesse tornare indietro rifarebbe gli studi al Conservatorio? Senz’altro. Rifarei tutti gli studi fino all’ultimo e poi, esattamente come ho fatto, imboccherei un’altra strada, perché la strada del musicista classico per essere percorsa dev’essere condita da una quantità di passione esagerata che non avevo all’epoca. Mi è ritornata adesso però. Qual è la differenza più evidente tra il suo universo musicale e il mondo della classica? Ai musicisti classic per quello che vedo non viene perdonato nessun errore. Mentre nella carriera che ho imboccato io, l’errore è alla base di tutto. Chi è il suo compositore preferito? Io ne ho più di uno, a seconda delle epoche. Fra gli antichi mi piacciono molto Bach, Mozart, Rossini. Però poi amo molto anche Kurt Weill e fra i contemporanei ho una collaborazione aperta Firenze | made in Tuscany 93
