Presented in Milan this spring, the Prize announces the finalists for the Fiction and Nonfiction categories, along with the winners of the International and Special awards, reaffirming its role as a privileged space for dialogue between the great voices of contemporary life.

W

hen did you realize that stone was your medium?

Very early: I grew up in the family artisan business in Sorso, surrounded by marble, granite, and local stones. Ever since I was a child, I tried to spend as much time as possible in the workshop.

What fascinates you most about working with it every day?

The fact that it’s never ‘the same’: granite, basalt, marble, limestone, trachyte – each type and each ‘piece’ has a different hardness, grain, and response.

How important is craftsmanship?

It’s fundamental: the human eye captures details that no machine can interpret, without distorting the stone.

of the iconic rock at the entrance to the Costa Smeralda. How did the idea come about?

It’s a symbol of identity, a block of marble left in its natural form, the only workmanship being the engraving of the inscription.

The intention wasn’t to make a reproduction: stone can’t be ‘photocopied’. Numerous trials were necessary, and each work is unique.

You are also the creator of the Costa Smeralda Prize. How does it feel to think that your work will be on the desks of some of literary greats?

For the Costa Smeralda Prize, I also chose essential forms, using Sardinian stones on a crystal base as a symbol of the sea. Knowing that these works will endure over time, also in the hands of great personalities, is the greatest satisfaction.

Quando ha capito che la pietra era il suo mezzo espressivo?

Molto presto: sono cresciuto nell’azienda artigiana di famiglia, a Sorso, tra marmo, granito e pietre locali. Fin da bambino, cercavo di passare più tempo possibile in bottega.

Cosa la affascina di più nel lavorarla ogni giorno?

Il fatto che non è mai ‘la stessa’: granito, basalto, marmo, calcare, trachite, ogni tipologia e ogni ‘pezzo’ ha una durezza, una venatura e una risposta diversa.

Quanto conta l’artigianalità? È fondamentale: l’occhio umano coglie dettagli che nessuna macchina può interpretare, senza snaturare la pietra.

Grazie a lei è possibile portare con sé una miniatura dell’iconica roccia posta

all’ingresso del territorio del Consorzio Costa Smeralda: com’è nata l’idea? È un simbolo identitario, un blocco di marmo lasciato nella sua forma naturale, la cui unica lavorazione è l’incisione della scritta. L’intento non era farne una riproduzione: la pietra non si può ‘fotocopiare’.

Sono servite numerose prove e ogni opera è un pezzo unico.

Lei è anche autore del Premio Costa Smeralda. Cosa prova nel pensare che la sua opera sarà sulla scrivania di alcuni dei più grandi letterati?

Anche nel Premio Costa Smeralda ho scelto forme essenziali, usando pietre sarde su base in cristallo, simbolo del mare. Sapere che queste opere vivranno nel tempo, anche nelle mani di grandi personalità, è la soddisfazione più grande.

You knew Maria Lai well; what do you love about this artist?

Did your relationship with Maria influence your decision to become an artist beyond fashion?

The first time I heard about Maria Lai was in Rome. I was captivated, and dedicated my first haute couture collection to her in 1996.

Our profound relationship changed my life, and not just my artistic one: it opened up a new world to me, gave me confidence, and taught me to see beyond.

Ha avuto un peso il suo rapporto con Maria nella scelta di diventare artista oltre la moda?

La prima volta che ho sentito parlare di Maria Lai è stato a Roma: ne sono rimasto conquistato e le ho dedicato la mia prima collezione di Alta Moda nel 1996. Il nostro profondo rapporto ha cambiato la mia vita, non solo artistica: mi ha aperto un mondo nuovo, mi ha dato fiducia e mi ha insegnato a vedere oltre.

E a livello umano ci racconta qualcosa di lei?

tell us something about her?

Maria often stayed at our house, in the small annex, a former chicken coop, since then known as “Maria Lai’s little house.” She gave me the keys to a secret room. She opened up a world to me that I never thought existed. She gave me faith in my work, wanted to work on shared projects, and gave us Thoughts and Words, the artwork she created on the concrete wall of our house. I owe her my mental and physical health and my imagination. Since she’s been gone, I struggle to talk about her without feeling sad. I miss her so much.

Maria was a tiny little Jana, the Sardinian fairy weaver, revolutionary, powerful, authoritative, generous, determined, and sharp. She was truly passionate. Maria is our Louise Bourgeois, and only now, after her death, is the world realizing it.

Tell us about your first project together in Sardinia, Llencols de aigua (Sheets of Water)?

An installation created over twenty years ago in Alghero, on the rocks along the promenade. Seeing it again earlier this year at Magazzino Italian Art in New York, bathed in American light, was deeply moving.

Maria è stata spesso a casa nostra, nella piccola dependance, ex pollaio, da allora denominata ‘casetta di Maria Lai’. Mi ha dato le chiavi di una stanza segreta. Mi ha aperto un mondo che io non pensavo che neanche potesse esistere. Mi ha dato fiducia nel mio lavoro, ha voluto lavorare a dei progetti comuni e ci ha regalato Pensieri e parole, l’opera che ha realizzato sul muro di cemento di casa nostra. Io gli sono debitore di salute psichica e fisica e di immaginazione. Da quando non c’è più faccio fatica a parlare di lei senza stare male. Mi manca tantissimo. Maria era una piccola, piccolissima Jana, la fatina sarda tessitrice, rivoluzionaria, potente, autoritaria, generosa, determinata e tranchant. È stata una vera passionaria. Maria è la nostra Louise Bourgeois, e solo ora, dopo la sua morte, il mondo se ne sta accorgendo.

Il primo progetto insieme in Sardegna, Llencols de aigua, ce lo racconta?

Un’installazione nata più di vent’anni fa ad Alghero, sugli scogli della passeggiata. Rivederla all’inizio di quest’anno negli spazi di Magazzino Italian Art, a New York,

It’s titled Paso Doble and is on display at M77 Gallery in Milan.

Like the traditional Spanish pas de deux, each work traces the rhythm of a movement that is both balance and counterpoint, in a play of isolation and references that unfolds throughout the gallery spaces. Maria Lai draws, paints, sculpts, assembles threads, fabric, books, poetry, and, above all, concepts, while in my works I have experimented with many types of language, including drawings, collages, ceramics, and more.

What do you love about Sardinia?

It’s a genetic imprint. Silence, landscape, melancholy, an engraved mark. An island that seems at the centre of everything and yet so distant. My roots have never been a boundary, but a secret language, an intimate alphabet with which I continue to read and describe the world.

Una mostra vi vede di nuovo insieme, virtualmente…

Si intitola Paso Doble ed è allestita presso M77 Gallery a Milano. Come nel tradizionale passo a due di origine spagnola, ogni opera traccia il ritmo di un movimento che è insieme equilibrio e contrappunto, in un gioco di isolamenti e rimandi che si snodano negli spazi della galleria.

Maria Lai disegna, dipinge, scolpisce, assembla fili, stoffa, libri, poesia e, soprattutto, concetti, mentre nelle mie opere ho sperimentato tanti tipi di linguaggio tra disegni, collage, ceramiche e altro.

Cosa ama della Sardegna? È un imprinting genetico. Silenzio, paesaggio, malinconia, un segno inciso. Un’isola che sembra stare al centro di tutto e insieme lontanissima. Le mie radici non sono mai state un confine, ma una lingua segreta, un alfabeto intimo con cui continuo a leggere e raccontare il mondo.

From London to Milan, Antonio Marras is the focus of two exhibitions that explore his artistic practice beyond fashion. Caos Calmo, at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London, presents over 60 works in which memory, identity, and relationships intertwine within a layering of materials and images. At the M77 Gallery through May 15, Paso Doble places him in dialogue with Maria Lai: more than 200 works create a close confrontation between languages and sensibilities, between intimate gesture and theatrical vision. What emerges is a dynamic balance made up of references, distances, and affinities, where the work becomes a space for relationship and narrative.

‘ABROAD, ITALY’S IMAGE IS VERY POSITIVE: WE ARE SEEN AS A CULTURAL MODEL, CAPABLE OF ENGAGING WITH DIFFERENT CULTURES. IT IS A QUALITY THAT HAS ITS ROOTS IN OUR HISTORY’

T

he Amerigo Vespucci’s around-the-world voyage was an epic journey: nearly two years at sea, from July 2023 to June 2025. Six hundred days away from Italy. The intercontinental leg, which concluded with the return to Trieste, was followed by a tour of the Mediterranean. Venice, Capri, and Sardinia, with their unique landscapes. On the occasion of the 2026 Literary Prize, we met Giuseppe Lai, currently Deputy Military Advisor to the Prime Minister and Commander of the Amerigo Vespucci during her around-theworld voyage, who was awarded this year’s Special Prize.

What was it like to encounter cultural identities?

It was the most valuable aspect of the experience. Interacting with different cultures is a rare opportunity for personal growth, especially in places like Chile, Peru, and Ecuador, which are difficult to truly understand. It’s striking how far the reality is from stereotypes: we often imagine continents in a simplified way, but instead we discover great cultural depth and variety. Cuisine is also an important

bridge: Peruvian cuisine, for example, surprised me. And then there’s the perception of Italy around the world.

Do they still perceive us as a nation of poets and sailors?

Italy’s image abroad is very positive, often better than that we have of ourselves. We’re seen not just as lovers of beauty, but as a cultural model, capable of engaging with diverse realities. It’s a quality rooted in our history.

During the voyage, do you grasp the significance of such a huge undertaking?

During the voyage, you’re focused on the present and your daily responsibilities. Only afterwards do you truly understand the full extent of the experience, along with the pride that surround our sailing ship.

How many people were on board?

The “regular” crew consisted of about 250 people, a number that rose to over 400 when trainees were included.. A true traveling community. Management relies on the human factor; the problems are more relational than technical. The captain must know how to build a network, and the team is essential.

Il giro del mondo dell’Amerigo Vespucci è stato un viaggio epico: quasi due anni in mare, da luglio 2023 fino a giugno 2025. Seicento giorni lontani dall’Italia. Dopo la parte intercontinentale, conclusa con il rientro a Trieste, è seguito un tour nel Mediterraneo. Venezia, Capri, la Sardegna… scenari unici.

In occasione del Premio Letterario, edizione 2026, abbiamo incontrato Giuseppe Lai, oggi Consigliere Militare Aggiunto del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri e Comandante dell’Amerigo Vespucci durante il giro del mondo. A lui la giuria del premio ha conferito un riconoscimento speciale.

Com’è stato confrontarsi con identità culturali così diverse? È stato l’aspetto più prezioso dell’esperienza. Il confronto con culture diverse è un’occasione rara di crescita personale, soprattutto nei luoghi più lontani come Cile, Perù ed Ecuador, difficili da conoscere davvero. Colpisce quanto la realtà sia distante dagli stereotipi: spesso immaginiamo i continenti in modo semplificato, ma scopriamo invece grande profondità e varietà culturale. Anche la cucina è un

ponte importante: quella peruviana, ad esempio, mi ha sorpreso per qualità e ricchezza. E poi c’è la percezione dell’Italia nel mondo.

Ci percepiscono ancora come un popolo di poeti e naviganti?

All’estero l’immagine dell’Italia è molto positiva, spesso migliore di quella che abbiamo di noi stessi.

Non siamo visti solo come amanti del bello, ma come un modello culturale, capace di dialogare con realtà diverse. È una qualità che affonda le radici nella nostra storia.

In viaggio si coglie la portata di un’impresa così grande?

Non completamente. Durante il viaggio si è concentrati sul presente e sulle responsabilità quotidiane.

Solo dopo si comprende davvero la dimensione dell’esperienza, insieme all’orgoglio e al rispetto che circondano il nostro veliero.

Quante persone erano a bordo?

L’equipaggio fisso era di circa 250 persone, che cresceva a oltre 400 con gli allievi. Una comunità in viaggio. La gestione si basa sul fattore umano: i problemi sono più relazionali che tecnici. Il comandante deve saper costruire una rete, e il team è fondamentale.

How important is team spirit?

It’s essential: on a ship, nothing is done alone. Every manoeuvre requires coordination. The sea also reshuffles roles: those who seem less prepared on land can prove crucial at sea.

What were the most difficult challenges?

The Pacific crossing was demanding: from Los Angeles to Tokyo in two months, with only one stop in Hawaii. Cape Horn was also challenging due to the extreme conditions. But the real challenge is daily: maintaining high levels of concentration for two years.

Is there a place that has impressed you more than others?

It’s difficult to choose just one.

Hawaii, the Galapagos, Thailand: each place has its own magic. And then Italy seen from the sea, always surprising.

Did your origins influence this choice?

A lot. Summers in San Teodoro, Sardinia, shaped my relationship with the sea: fascinating, but also fearful. It was this duality that drove me to explore it, and ships became the means to do so.

Quanto conta lo spirito di squadra? È essenziale: sulla nave nulla si fa da soli. Ogni manovra richiede coordinamento. Il mare, inoltre, rimescola i ruoli: chi a terra sembra meno preparato può rivelarsi fondamentale in navigazione.

Le sfide più difficili?

La traversata del Pacifico è stata impegnativa: da Los Angeles a Tokyo in due mesi, con una sola sosta alle Hawaii. Anche Capo Horn è stato complesso per le condizioni estreme. Ma la vera sfida è quotidiana: mantenere sempre alta l’attenzione per due anni.

C’è un luogo che l’ha colpita di più?

Difficile sceglierne uno. Hawaii, Galàpagos , canali Patagonici, Thailandia: ogni luogo ha la sua magia. E poi l’Italia vista dal mare, sempre sorprendente.

Le sue origini hanno influito su questa scelta?

Molto. Le estati a San Teodoro, in Sardegna, hanno segnato il mio rapporto con il mare: affascinante e anche temuto. Proprio questa dualità mi ha spinto a conoscerlo, e le navi sono diventate il mezzo per farlo.

hoever coined the term ‘quiet luxury’ must have spent spring in north-eastern Sardinia, immersed in its nature as it slowly reawakens after winter, and pampered in the hotels and restaurants that reopen their doors to guests this season.

Under the warm morning sun, enjoying breakfast at the Nuna al Sole restaurant right in Porto Cervo’s Piazzetta is a slow and flavourful treat. A short way away, the Hotel Cervo, the heart and soul of the town, is among the first to kick off the season, as is the Cervo Restaurant with its classic traditional Italian cuisine and the Cervo Bar, the hotel’s elegant bar and lounge. In the lower piazza, the La Virgola bar, with its sea view framed by arches, offers a charming, relaxed atmosphere from breakfast until after dinner. The Cafe du Port in Porto Cervo’s old port has been offering unforgettable moments in early spring since 1972.

1976, and Il Portico Bar, located in the Piazzetta, offering bespoke cocktails in an elegant atmosphere. For a change of scenery, with a broader view of the Pevero Gulf, I Frati Rossi restaurant, nestled on Pantogia Hill, has decided to create a new tasting menu for spring.

Overlooking the gulf, the Hotel Cala di Volpe opens its season in mid-April, bringing with it the openings of Le Grand Cala di Volpe restaurant, the Atrium Bar, and the Juice Bar, along with the Pevero Club House. You’ll have to wait until May to enjoy the art of Nobu-style Japanese cuisine by chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, brought to life in an elegant menu and refined atmosphere at Matsuhisa Cala di Volpe.

You can also savour the exotic flavours of contemporary Japanese cuisine at Zuma restaurant. From the end of May, diners can enjoy the renowned Asian fusion dishes combined with local ingredients and flavours offered by Novikov in the heart of Porto Cervo.

Così come per assaporare i sapori esotici della cucina giapponese contemporanea d’autore proposti nel ristorante Zuma. A fine maggio, nel cuore di Porto Cervo, arriva il gusto raffinato di Novikov, con un menù Asian fusion combinato con sapori e ingredienti locali.

rzachena renews its commitment to enhancing the historic centre through urban art, presenting the eleventh Santa Lucia Staircase. The 2026 project, entrusted to the Turin-based collective Truly Design Crew, has once again transformed this symbolic space into an openair work inspired by ‘continuous progression’. The installation, unveiled during Holy Week, aims to be a new cultural and tourist attraction blending contemporary creativity and local identity. Emanuele Ronco, creative director of Truly Design, told us about the work.

A collective: can you tell us who the members are and what your responsibilities are?

Truly Design is a Turin-based crew made up of artists and designers with diverse backgrounds, but a shared vision, which translates into a highly recognizable style.

Making art as a collective is like playing in a band for a musician, with each project being the result of discussion and dialogue. Roles are not overly rigid; we are united by a shared creative process in which ideas take shape together.

What inspired the installation, and what message do you want to convey to Sardinia and the world?

The work stems from the idea that growth is a journey, not a leap. We were inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, where each element arises from the previous one. We like to think that dreams work this way too: they are not distant concepts, but begin with who we are today.

For better or worse, our future and our dreams are the sum of our choices and actions.

How did you create your work for the staircase?

We worked on the staircase as if it were an experience, not just a painted surface. As you ascend, you enter a visual progression of shapes, colours, and rhythm.

element is connected to the others, growing, transforming, and guiding the gaze upward, following the movement of those who climb it.

Where can we see your other works?

We work extensively in public spaces, in Italy and abroad, but also with brands and institutions. We like to bring our language to different contexts.

Some of our projects are visible on our online channels, but many of our works are discovered in person, by walking through them.

What do you like about Sardinia in one word?

For someone like me of Sardinian origins and who loves this land, this is a very difficult question!

I’ll try: warmth.

Arzachena rinnova il suo impegno nella valorizzazione del centro storico attraverso l’arte urbana, presentando l’undicesima edizione della Scalinata di Santa Lucia. Il progetto 2026, affidato al collettivo torinese Truly Design Crew, ha trasformato ancora una volta questo spazio simbolico in un’opera a cielo aperto ispirata alla ‘progressione continua’.

L’installazione, svelata durante la Settimana Santa, si propone come un nuovo attrattore culturale e turistico capace di coniugare creatività contemporanea e identità del territorio. Ci ha raccontato l’opera, Emanuele Ronco, direttore creativo di Truly Design.

Un collettivo: possiamo conoscere dalle vostre parole chi sono i membri e i vostri compiti?

Truly Design è una crew con

base a Torino, formata da artisti e designer con percorsi diversi, ma una visione comune, che si traduce in uno stile molto riconoscibile.

Fare arte come collettivo è come per un musicista suonare in una band: ogni progetto nasce dal confronto e dal dialogo. I ruoli non sono troppo rigidi, siamo accomunati da un processo creativo condiviso in cui l’idea prende forma insieme.

Cosa ha ispirato l’installazione e quale messaggio volete dare alla Sardegna e al mondo intero?

L’opera nasce dall’idea che la crescita sia un percorso, non un salto. Ci siamo ispirati alla successione di Fibonacci, dove ogni elemento nasce da quello precedente.

Ci piace pensare che anche i sogni funzionino così: non sono concetti lontani, ma iniziano da ciò che siamo oggi.

Il nostro futuro e i nostri sogni sono la somma delle nostre scelte e delle nostre azioni, nel bene e nel male.

Come avete creato la vostra opera per la scalinata?

Abbiamo lavorato sulla scalinata come se fosse un’esperienza, non solo una superficie dipinta.

Salendo, si entra dentro una progressione visiva fatta di forme, colori e ritmo. Il linguaggio è astratto, ma molto costruito: ogni elemento è collegato agli altri, cresce, si trasforma e accompagna lo sguardo verso l’alto, seguendo il movimento di chi la attraversa.

Dove possiamo vedere altri vostri lavori?

Lavoriamo molto nello spazio pubblico, in Italia e all’estero, ma anche con brand e istituzioni.

Ci piace portare il nostro linguaggio in contesti diversi.

Cosa vi piace della Sardegna in una parola?

Per chi come me ha origini sarde e ama questa terra, questa è una domanda molto difficile!

benchmark for international sailing, it hosts some of the most spectacular, sophisticated, and iconic sailing competitions in the Mediterranean, in 2026, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) launches a packed calendar of events, including historic returns, legendary classes, and a constant focus on safeguarding the sea. The YCCS’s commitment to sustainability remains a central theme, including the traditional YCCS Clean Beach Day, organized in collaboration with the One Ocean Foundation on June 8th, marking World Oceans Day. The 2026 season kicks off earlier than in the past, from April 24th to 26th, with the Cape 31 Med Round 1, bringing to Sardinia a high-performance one-design class that is increasingly sought-after in the Mediterranean. Following this, from May 15th to 17th, Vela & Golf returns, a classic formula that combines sport, lifestyle, and club spirit, while from May 21st to 23rd the Grand Soleil Cup, an event much loved by Italian boat builders, takes centre stage. Spring highlights will include the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, scheduled for May 26th to 30th. La vocazione sostenibile resta centrale nel mondo YCCS, anche attraverso il tradizionale YCCS Clean Beach Day, organizzato in collaborazione con la Fondazione One Ocean l’8 giugno, in occasione della Giornata Mondiale degli Oceani.

La stagione 2026 parte prima rispetto al passato, dal 24 al 26 aprile, con la Cape 31 Med Round 1, che porta in Sardegna una classe monotipo ad alte prestazioni sempre più ricercata nel panorama mediterraneo.

A seguire, dal 15 al 17 maggio, torna Vela & Golf, formula classica che unisce sport, lifestyle e spirito di club, mentre dal 21 al 23 maggio spazio alla Grand Soleil Cup, appuntamento molto amato dagli armatori del cantiere italiano. After the 2024 series won by Ineos Britannia in Barcelona, preliminary regattas for the 38th America’s Cup will begin in Cagliari from May 21st to 24th in the Golfo degli Angel, culminating in the final in Naples in 2027.

La Louis Vuitton Cup, selezione degli sfidanti per l’America’s Cup, il più antico trofeo sportivo internazionale. Dopo l’edizione 2024 vinta da Ineos Britannia a Barcellona, il torneo torna protagonista quest’anno con la 38ª America’s Cup, le cui regate preliminari iniziano a Cagliari dal 21 al 24 maggio nel Golfo degli Angeli, e culminano con la finale a Napoli nel 2027.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) is one of the world’s most prestigious yacht clubs

But the real news for 2026 is the eagerlyawaited return of the Range Rover Sardinia Cup from May 31st to June 7th: a historic regatta, absent since 2012, considered one of the Club’s signature events. Five days of racing, including medium-long coastal races and buoy races.

From June 15th to 20th, Porto Cervo hosts the Rolex TP52 World Championship, the highlight of the 52 Super Series circuit. It is one of the most technically prestigious events of the year, bringing one of the most competitive keelboat fleets to Sardinia. Immediately afterward, the calendar continues with the Club’s most iconic competitions, with the Smeralda 888 Invitational from June 26th to 28th and the Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 from July 3rd to 5th, dedicated to the fleet designed specifically for Porto Cervo.

The summer continues with the YCCS Members Championship from July 29th to August 1st, before giving way to the Palermo-Porto Cervo-Monte Carlo from August 18th to 23rd, an offshore regatta that expands the horizons beyond

September is a great sailing month.

From the 6th to the 12th, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup returns, a flagship event in international offshore sailing, organized by the YCCS with the International Maxi Association. For decades, this competition has represented the absolute benchmark for yachts over 18.30 metres, boasting some of the best crews and most spectacular boats in the world. Immediately after, from September 13th to 19th, comes another beloved classic – the Rolex Swan Cup, a biennial regatta organized by the YCCS in collaboration with ClubSwan Racing and sponsored by Rolex. It’s one of those events where competitive spirit, elegant design, and a sense of belonging blend seamlessly, confirming Porto Cervo as the natural home of the Swan universe.

Closing the season, from October 2nd to 4th, will be the J/70 Cup and Italian Championship, bringing one of the most popular and competitive one-design classes on the international scene to the waters of North-Eastern Sardinia.

Elixir of life

ore than just a dish, it’s a journey to the land of centenarians, discovering those flavours and ingredients, so hard to find on modern tables, that represent a true elixir of long life. It’s ‘Fae ‘e laldu’, Broad Beans and Lard, also known as Favata: the ingredients can be counted on one hand and are strictly zerokilometre. Broad beans, pork morsels with rind and fat, and wild fennel, wild mint, garlic, chard, and potatoes.

Cooked slowly for hours, preferably in a large terracotta pot, after blending lard, mint, garlic, and fennel, whose unmistakable aroma fills the kitchen, this soup has the power to warm the heart and promises longevity.

One of Sardinia’s centenarian dishes, those dishes that, cooked and consumed on the island since time immemorial, have contributed to the Sardinians’ reputation as a long-lived people. ‘Fae ‘e laldu’ was often found in the homes of farmers and breeders, who naturally used homegrown ingredients, including free-range pigs. The magic of watching this dish being prepared today lies in the time it takes to search for ingredients, the harvesting of mint and wild fennel, and the sensory journey that comes from smelling their aromas, which blend with the sweet scents of fresh broad beans and lard. Even eaten plain, this soup is delicious, but with the addition of another homemade ingredient, ‘Fae ‘e laldu’ takes on yet another flavour. It’s customary to dip carasau bread into its broth for just a few seconds, just long enough to absorb the flavour while preserving some of its crunchiness. It’s a secret Sardinian grandmothers share with their grandchildren, one they eagerly await when it’s time to ladle Favata into their bowls.

AFTER 1 HOUR AND 30 MINUTES, ADD ALL THE OTHER INGREDIENTS Più che un semplice piatto, è un viaggio nella terra dei centenari, alla scoperta di quei sapori e di quegli ingredienti che a fatica si trovano sulle tavole moderne e che rappresentano un vero elisir di lunga vita. È il ‘Fae ‘e laldu’, Fave e Lardo o anche conosciuto come Favata: gli ingredienti si contano sulle dita di una mano e sono rigorosamente a chilometri zero. Le fave, i bocconcini di maiale con la cotenna e il grasso, e poi finocchietto selvatico, menta selvatica, aglio, bietole e patate. Cotta per ore con acqua, meglio se in un grosso tegame di terracotta, dopo aver fatto un battuto di lardo, menta, aglio e finocchietto, il cui profumo inconfondibile inebria la cucina, questa zuppa ha il potere di scaldare il cuore e promette longevità. Inscritta all’interno dei piatti dei centenari della Sardegna, quelle pietanze che, cucinate e consumate da sempre nell’isola, hanno contribuito ad accrescere la fama dei sardi come popolo longevo. Il ‘Fae ‘e

laldu’ si trovava spesso nelle case dei contadini e degli allevatori, che ovviamente utilizzavano ingredienti autoprodotti e il maiale era quello allevato allo stato brado. La magia nel veder preparare questo piatto ancora oggi sta nel tempo della ricerca degli ingredienti, nella raccolta della menta e del finocchietto selvatico e nel viaggio olfattivo che deriva dall’ annusarne i profumi che si fondono insieme con quello dolce delle fave fresche e del lardo. Se anche mangiata da sola questa sorta di zuppa è deliziosa, è però con l’aggiunta di un altro ingrediente caserecccio che ‘Fae ‘e laldu’ acquista ancora un altro sapore: nel suo brodo infatti è usanza intingere il pane carasau, pochi secondi appena, giusto il tempo per fargli prendere il sapore preservandone in parte la croccantezza. È un segreto che le nonne sarde hanno con i loro nipoti, quello che al momento di servire nei piatti dei commensali la Favata i più piccoli attendono con ansia.
