obsessively controlled detail, custody of a tradition that makes us unique in the world, the importance of the workshops, where ancient knowledge is still being handed down, the workers and the skill of our craftsmen are a resource that has no equal. In a culture devoted to globalization, the real difference will be solely the irreplaceable value of craftsmanship. For me, fashion is considered a minor form of art in what the French call Les Ars Decoratif: the liveliest of the art forms, that lives with people, in modern times, which is not intended for museums, but for real life. The study of art history is essential for any training process. It is our history, the pursuit of absolute beauty and the layering of cultures. The unique and exceptional past underlies our present and is what the future is built on. Technology and digital development only make sense if conceived as a natural evolution of history and tradition, in a continuous flow. There is no winning progress if there is no solid foundation to build on. This is a difficult question, because it would be an honour to be a student of any of the geniuses that built the foundations of our culture. I could say this: an artist who has always excited me for his eccentricity and his contemporary approach is Gentile da Fabriano, the painter of the famous Adoration of the Magi. Although he does not actually belong to what historians call the Renaissance, this painter has a multifaceted culture that encapsulates the past and present, a taste for the decorative style and chromatic modernism that is truly magnificent. In itself, it already has all the seeds of the culture that was to come, the bridge between the Gothic and the innovations “all’antica”, in the ancient style.

tico, le maestranze e la bravura dei nostri maestri artigiani sono una risorsa che non ha uguali. In una cultura destinata alla globalizzazione, la vera differenza potrà essere soltanto il valore insostituibile dell’artigianato. Possibile che la moda sia in stretto contatto con l’arte? Per me la moda è da considerarsi una forma minore di arte all’interno di quelle che i francesi chiamano Les Ars Decoratif: la più viva delle forme artistiche, che vive con le persone, nella modernità, che non è intesa per i musei, ma per la vita reale. Sarebbe giusto studiare arte prima di entrare in una scuola di moda? Lo studio della storia dell’arte è fondamentale per qualsiasi processo formativo. E’ la nostra storia, la ricerca del bello assoluto e la stratificazione delle culture. Il passato, unico ed eccezionale sul quale si basa il nostro presente e sul quale costruire il futuro. Tecnologia e sviluppo digitale hanno senso solo se concepite come evoluzione naturale di storia e tradizione, in un flusso continuo. Non esiste nessun progresso vincente se non ha solide basi da cui partire. L’artista del Rinascimento fiorentino che avrebbe voluto per maestro Questa è una domanda difficile, perché sarebbe stato un onore essere allievo di uno qualsiasi dei geni che hanno costruito le basi della nostra cultura. Potrei dire questo: un artista che mi ha sempre emozionato, per la sua eccentricità e la sua contemporaneità è Gentile da Fabriano, autore della celeberrima l’Adorazione dei magi. Anche se non appartiene propriamente a quello che gli storici dell’arte definiscono Rinascimento, questo pittore ha una cultura poliedrica, che racchiude perfettamente passato e presente, un gusto per il decorativismo e un modernismo cromatico davvero magnifici.
