C14 LAVORA E MILANO RINGRAZIA: I PROGETTI PER PIAZZA GAE AULENTI, DA UNICREDIT A COIMA C14 GETS TO WORK AND MILAN SAYS THANK YOU: PROJECTS FOR GAE AULENTI, FROM UNICREDIT TO COIMA

Una piazza pensata per dare nuovo lustro alla città che la ospita. Uno spazio dedicato a un mostro sacro, a una signor a indimenticabile come Gae Aulenti. Una serie di edifici modernissimi, sperimentali, av veniristici. Gr andi Maestri dell ’architettur a che si sfidano nell ’ar te della progettazione per vivere. Un solo vincitore, Milano. È stato un gr ande onore, per Alexander Bellman con Gruppo C14, par tecipare alla realizzazione del nuovo quar tiere di Por ta Nuova.

Risale al 2011-2012 il primo intervento del nostro Gruppo per UniCredit General Interest: per il lighting degli interni delle torri A e B, in collaborazione con Flos abbiamo realizzato Megauzo, installazioni luminose che hanno molto affascinato il pubblico.

Megauzo è il risultato della contaminazione in cui la goccia alcolica plasma e scioglie il latte. Lo scontro tra le due sostanze genera luce. Questa era la metafisica all’inizio del progetto: secondo la pura teoria, Megauzo non dovrebbe mai avere forma solida e statica. E in un certo senso non ce l’ha, ma questo lo si capisce solo dopo averlo installato.

Il dinamismo formale è il dato che cercavamo - e che in fase progettuale non potevamo essere certi di ottenere: si fatica a percepire la dimensione e la forma dei corpi osservandoli dal basso o dall’alto, da sinistra o da destra.

Gruppo 14’s first commission for UniCredit General Interest dates back to the period between 2011-2012: the internal lighting on Towers A and B, in collaboration with Flos we created Megauzo, lighting installations which were an instant hit with the general public.

Megauzo is the result of contamination in which a drop of alcohol shapes and melts milk. The clashing of the two elements creates light. This was the metaphysics at the beginning of the project: according to pure theory, Megauzo should never be solid or static. In a way, it isn’t, in fact, but this was only apparent once it had been installed.

Formal dynamism is what we were going for – and at the design stage we couldn’t be sure we would achieve it: it’s not easy to gauge the size and shape of the lights looking at them from above or below, from the left or from the right.

I Megauzo appaiono sempre diversi, sono difficili da disegnare e da descrivere. Disorientano, che siano spenti o accesi; se cerchi di dar loro un confine visivo, ti ingannano sempre. Molti visitatori si sono accorti che Megauzo era una significativa deformazione del soffitto solo salendo di un livello e cambiando punto di osservazione. Invitati a ipotizzare una loro misura, a ogni gradino cambiavano idea.

Appena pensati e disegnati, ne abbiamo parlato con Flos: l’unica realtà, a nostro avviso, in grado di realizzare un progetto così avanzato. Le dimensioni (l’Uzo, ovviamente, è Mega), il peso eccezionalmente contenuto (140 kg per 4 metri di diametro e 2 di altezza), l’estrema precisione delle superfici, incredibilmente continue e lisce, perfette, come uscite da un modellatore tridimensionale fantascientifico: tutte caratteristiche richieste e soddisfatte.

The Megauzo lights always look different, they’re difficult to design and to describe. They have a disorienting effect, whether they are on or off; if you try and set a visual boundary, they trick you every time. Many visitors realised that the Megauzo lights significantly altered their perception of the ceiling only when they went up to the next floor or when they changed their viewpoint. When asked to guess their size, they changed their minds on every step.

As soon as we had come up with the design we talked to Flos: in our opinion the only people who possessed the skill set to carry out such an advanced project. The size (Uzo, obviously, is huge), the reduced weight (140 kg for a diameter of 4 metres in diameter and 2 metres in height), the extremely precise surface, incredibly continuous and smooth, simply perfect, as though created by some kind of futuristic 3D printer: all these requirements were satisfied in full.

Il lavoro sulla Torre A prosegue con il design di tutti gli interni del Top Management, organizzati nei piani compresi tra il 27 e il 31 dell’edificio. In particolare, al ventinovesimo piano della Torre ci siamo dedicati alla progettazione della boardroom, una sala di 140 mq destinata a ospitare il Consiglio di Amministrazione: dopo un’attenta riflessione, il pensiero è volato lontano, fino a Astroganga. Il termine, sconosciuto ai più, fa riferimento a una serie tv giapponese degli anni Settanta il cui protagonista - il robot eponimo - è definito come “una specialissima forma di metallo vivente”, generato da un lingotto metallico alieno dotato di un motore dorsale.

Coniugando funzionalità e evocazione, abbiamo pensato a uno scrittoio inteso come postazione individuale di lavoro, che permettesse di comunicare e insieme di raccogliersi in se stessi, di aprirsi ma anche di chiudersi per approfondire la riflessione e trovare la sintesi.

Ed ecco il risultato: un unico ambiente, e un unico tavolo di riunione che si compone, però, di 44 postazioni concepite e strutturate per avere ciascuna un propria ragion d’essere. Fogli di acciaio che danno vita a corpi illuminanti e spazi di lavoro, un piano in metallo che si apre in una rift luminosa al centro della sezione annegata nel suolo da cui sembra sorgere.

Astroganga - creatura robotica al servizio dell’uomo, o anche lisca di un pesce, struttura fondamentale e scheletro della vita - è inserita in uno spazio che non la connota ulteriormente: le pareti sono foglie dal carattere monumentale, evidente omaggio alle opere di Richard Serra. L’utilizzo del noce canaletto conferisce matericità ai fronti esterni in contrapposizione alla morbidezza e alla perfezione impalpabile del guscio interno che racchiudono. L’andamento dei flussi che generano è volutamente armonioso e fluido, la sensazione è di un luogo etereo, al quale attribuire molteplici rimandi. C14 propone soluzioni, ma lascia anche la libertà di leggervi ciò che a ciascuno più piace.

Astroganga

15 Work on Tower A continued with the design of all the interiors for the Top Management, located between the 27th and 31st floors of the building. In particular, we designed the boardroom on the 29th floor, a room covering 140 m2 for the Board of Directors: after a lot of careful thought, we came up with Astroganga. Unfamiliar to most, this term refers to a Japanese TV series from the Seventies whose main character – Astroganger – is described as “a very special kind of living metal ”, generated by an alien metal ingot with a motor on the back.

By blending function and suggestion, we designed a desk as an individual workstation, which allowed interaction with others as well as the option of closing oneself off, to open and close when one wants to think and find balance.

The result: a unique environment, and a unique single meeting table composed of 44 complete individual workstations in their own right. Steel sheets breathe life into lighting systems and work spaces, a central metal surface opens up to reveal a lit rift sunk into the bottom from which it simultaneously appears to rise.

Astroganga – a robotic creature at the service of humans, or also a fish bone, a fundamental structure and skeleton of life – is part of a space which doesn’t characterise it any further: the walls are composed of large-scale leaves, clearly paying homage to the work of Richard Serra. The use of walnut adds texture to the outside which is in contrast with the softness and tangible perfection of the internal shell. A flowing feeling is generated, it is intentionally harmonious and fluid, positively ethereal and rich with multiple references. C14 offers solutions but there is always space for free interpretation according to one’s own taste.

16 A completare lo spazio, la nostra b-chair: una poltroncina estremamente contestualizzata, di forte ispirazione clericale, severa e tradizionale nei materiali (noce canaletto e cuoio), confortevole ma con un carattere austero e essenziale. Concepita per avere una seduta che si adatti perfettamente a Astroganga e al suo involucro fatto di gusci a doppia curvatura, b-chair partecipa attivamente alla costruzione di un luogo immanente, senza tempo, fatto di contrasti tra tradizione e modernità, tra evocazioni artistiche e architettura, tra acciai industriali e materiali artigianali. La boardroom UniCredit è una delle sale riunioni più importanti del mondo, dove si decidono i destini di capitali tanto ingenti da far rabbrividire: è una “cattedrale” della finanza. Da qui l’idea, la rappresentazione di un luogo in cui il potere economico e quindi politico - è talmente denso che lo si percepisce, anche fisicamente, ogni volta che in quella sala si entra. Nelle tre Torri abbiamo curato, inoltre, il concept delle lobby, pensate per accogliere il pubblico richiamando, insieme, i colori del logo UniCredit e le linee pulite degli edifici di Porta Nuova.

The space is completed by the b-chair: a highly contextualised armchair, a strong clerical influence, robust, traditional materials (walnut and leather), comfortable yet austere and pared-back. This seating is designed to be perfectly suited to Astroganga and the surrounding shell-like structure. B-chair actively participates in the construction of an immanent space, timeless, composed of the contrast between tradition and modernity, artistic and architectural references and between industrial steel and artisanal materials. The UniCredit boardroom is one of the most important in the world, where crucial financial decisions are made,: it is a “cathedral” for finance. This gave rise to the idea of a place where financial power – and therefore political power – is so dense as to be perceptible, also physically perceptible, on entering the room. In addition, we also developed the concept for the lobbies in the three Towers, designed to welcome visitors and bring together the three colours of the UniCredit logo and the clean lines of buildings in Porta Nuova.

Altrettanto stimolante, per noi, il lavoro sulla UniCredit Tower Hall, nella Torre C: immaginando di utilizzare per la progettazione solo la carta - priva quindi del suo tradizionale alleato, la matita - abbiamo immaginato che il controsoffitto della sala multipurpose si muovesse al pari di un foglio piegato e in continuo movimento, mimando un maxi origami. Un’onda in grado di accogliere il visitatore partendo dal foyer della Torre e arrivando fino alla sala principale: questo movimento offre una forte caratterizzazione agli ambienti interni e una particolare vista prospettica, guidando l’osservatore fino al limite del palco. In contrapposizione allo skyline curvo e armonioso degli esterni, gli spazi interni hanno linee tese e geometrie spezzate, su cui l’attento studio dell’illuminazione consente di creare effetti e scenari che disegnano tagli continui nel controsoffitto e nel rivestimento in boiserie di rovere delle pareti perimetrali. I centosessanta spettatori della sala sono immersi in un ambiente pensato come una cassa armonica, dove i suoni sono calibrati alla perfezione per “rimbalzare” sulle superfici inclinate del soffitto.

Al quarto piano dello stesso edificio, la Torre C appunto, ci siamo poi cimentati nello studio sulla CIB - la Corporate Investment Banking: un luogo destinato a rimanere privato, riservatissimo, ma che richiede un’attenzione speciale per il comfort. Le enormi vetrate aperte su una Milano totalmente rinnovata avrebbero potuto rappresentare, in sé, una caratterizzazione di grande prestigio per lo spazio. Noi abbiamo visto proprio in quelle vetrate, invece, un limite e abbiamo voluto sperimentare, oltre al gusto di proporre il design di un luogo, anche quello di determinare il “design” del modo in cui viverlo. Incorniciato e posto come su una lente, il volume vetrato acquista personalità e concretezza. Non è più una finestra ma un fondale e la scatola di legno che chiude l’ambiente richiama alla necessità di privacy. La parete di vetro non è più elemento dell’edificio, ma segno che caratterizza quella stanza e quella situazione in particolare.

For us, the work we carried out on the UniCredit Tower Hall, in Tower C was just as exciting: we imagined using only paper for the design – without its traditional ally, the pencil – and so we pictured the ceiling in the multi-purpose room moving like a piece of folded paper, constantly moving, like maxi-origami. A wave that could welcome visitors, starting in the foyer of the Tower and carry on up to the main room: this movement strongly characterises the interior, creates an unusual perspective and guides the observer’s eyeline. In direct contrast with the curved harmonious skyline outside, the interior boasts straight lines and interrupted geometric shapes upon which, the carefully studied lighting creates interesting effects on the ceiling and on the oak panelling on the walls. The 160 people in the hall are immersed in this environment, like a sound box, where the sound is perfectly calibrated and bounces off the ceiling’s sloped surface.

On the fourth floor, of the same building, namely Tower C, we shifted our attention to the CIB (Corporate Investment Banking) offices: this space had to be private, reserved, but we still had to place special emphasis on the comfort factor. The vast windows looking out onto the newly developed city of Milan could have been a highly prestigious feature in themselves for the space. However we saw those windows as more of a limitation, and decided we wanted to experiment a little, not only with the pleasure of presenting the design of a place but also the satisfaction of “designing” how to experience it. Framed and positioned like a lens, the window acquires personality and substance. It is no longer a window, rather it is a backdrop and the wooden box which encloses the space underlines the need for privacy. The glass wall is no longer an element of the building, it is something which characterises that particular room and that particular situation.

20 I nostri interventi sullo spazio di Piazza Gae Aulenti sono stati diversi, tutti egualmente impegnativi e affascinanti, e sono proseguiti negli anni: al 2015 risale, ad esempio, il lavoro su UniCredit Pavilion.

A noi è stato affidato il compito di disegnare l’illuminazione esterna, che ha preso spunto dalla visualizzazione astratta del propagarsi di un’onda: un sasso cade nello stagno e ne deforma la superficie.

Il ritmo di questa deformazione è musica e, insieme, movimento. Allo stesso modo, la luce prende le mosse dall’architettura per poi allargarsi, scandita dai fasci puntuali dei lampioni, disegnati ad hoc al modo di steli altissimi e puri.

Questa teoria iniziale, così affascinante, ci ha portato a un lavoro enorme durato due anni e, ovviamente, ci ha costretto a ardue e valorose battaglie per difendere scelte tecniche e selezione di apparecchi e ottiche.

L’“oggetto architettonico” di De Lucchi, infatti, è super complesso e ha una pelle mutevole, trasparente e opaca allo stesso tempo a seconda delle momentanee esigenze interne. L’approccio richiesto è molto tecnico, studiato nei minimi dettagli, vincolato dalle normative Cielo Buio Regione Lombardia.

Il lavoro sulle ombre, oltre a quello sulla luce, è stato qui fondamentale - come sottolinea lo stesso Bellman: “Di notte, la forza espressiva di un’architettura aumenta, si assottiglia e si disegna in maniera surreale e astratta. Non esistono a Milano luoghi notturni simili, nei quali i contrasti tra luce e ombra nascono da una volontà tanto determinata e precisa”.

The various projects we carried out for Piazza Gae Aulenti were all different, but equally demanding and fascinating and have continued over the years: in fact, the commission for the UniCredit Pavilion commenced in 2015, along with our allies, Michele De Lucchi and his team, who were in charge of the architecture.

We, on the other hand, were assigned the task of designing the external lighting, which all started with the abstract visualisation of the development of a wave: like a stone dropping into a pool and deforming the surface. The rhythm of this deformation is music together with movement. In exactly the same way, the lighting takes the lead from the arcitecture and then expands, punctuated by bands of lampposts which were specially-designed with long, slender posts.

This initial, fascinating theory, brought us a huge amount of work lasting two years and involved obviously, arduous, valiant battles for the defence of technical decisions and the choice of lighting materials and fixtures. In fact, De Lucchi’s oggetto architettonico is super complicated and has a skin which is both transparent and opaque depending on the requirements of the interior at any given time.

This required a very technical approach, with meticulous attention to detail whilst fully complying with rules set by Cielo Buio Regione Lombardia.

The work we did with shadow, apart from what we did with light, was essential here - as Bellman himself underlines: “At night, the expressive strength of architecture increases, it thins out and becomes surreal and abstract. In Milan, there are no other nighttime places like it, where the contrast between light and shadow has been precisely and forcefully determined”.

La piazza accoglie, dallo scorso anno, anche la nuova sede di Coima, società specializzata nello sviluppo e nella gestione immobiliare che amministra in parte proprio la grande area di Porta Nuova a Milano.

L’edificio, denominato “E3 East”, è stato pensato per ospitarne il quartier generale: l’architetto Mario Cucinella con il suo team ha progettato uno spazio che si pone come ideale sintesi tra la natura del parco adiacente e l’artificialità degli edifici cui esso fa da contrappunto. La facciata di E3 East, immaginato come una serra in vetro e acciaio rivestito da lamelle in larice ritmate, accoglie il visitatore guidandolo, quasi, alla Biblioteca degli Alberi inaugurata pochi mesi fa.

Since last year, the square has also been home to Coima, a company specialising in real estate development and management and which is partially responsible for the whole of the Porta Nuova area in Milan. The building, known as “E3 East”, was designed to house the headquarters: the architect Mario Cucinella along with his team designed a space which aimed to suit the natural element of the adjacent park and the contrasting artificial element of the surrounding buildings. The facade of the building resembles a glass and steel greenhouse clad in sheets of larch and welcomes visitors, almost guiding them towards the Library of Trees which opened just a few months ago.

22 E3 East, posizionato alle spalle del Pavilion, ne prosegue e ne completa il discorso, arricchendo di una voce importante la già celebre piazza milanese. Il disegno di lighting, curato da Alexander Bellman con Gruppo C14, tende a esaltare il ritmo di facciata illuminando le centine dall’interno: l’effetto ottenuto è quello di una sorta di magica lanterna, che brilla della luce da se stessa emessa creando un nuovo polo di attrazione visiva nel già suggestivo panorama della grande piazza in notturna.

Il progetto prevede il posizionamento di proiettori Simes Compact a incasso per il lavaggio delle lamelle, inseriti in parte a pavimento e in parte sui portali d’ingresso. Il sistema di lamelle in corrispondenza della grande scala di collegamento che porta verso via Melchiorre Gioia si modifica e rimane sospeso rispetto alla quota di calpestio. In quel punto è stato studiato un cassonetto in metallo verniciato per l’incasso dei proiettori e il passaggio dei cavi.

Nell’ottica di un’ottimizzazione nel posizionamento di elementi a pavimento all’interno dello spazio pubblico, su E3 East sono stati sistemati anche proiettori per l’illuminamento delle aree pubbliche di attraversamento pedonale circostanti, compresa la scala. La scelta rinsalda l’idea di un progetto unitario sotto il profilo del lighting, in cui si inseriscono i singoli edifici come gli spazi comuni. I proiettori che svolgono questa funzione sono proiettori Erco Kona, e sono state impiegate diverse tipologie di ottiche (Wide Oval e Spot) a seconda delle necessità di illuminazione.

Bellman sottolinea come i calcoli illuminotecnici siano stati corretti via via in concerto con la progressione del lavoro di progettazione dell’edificio: il confronto con lo studio Mario Cucinella Architects è stato costante e ha permesso un continuo approfondimento del discorso comune tenendo ferma, naturalmente, l’identità dell’architettura nel suo complesso.

Tanti progetti, moltissimo impegno, una passione che non si attenua: il lavoro per piazza Gae Aulenti ci ha offerto anni indimenticabili. La sfida, per noi, è tutta qui: osservare uno spazio, coglierne l’anima, regalarle un corpo. Armonioso e simmetrico o strano, disturbante.

Morbido o spigoloso, caldo di legno oppure freddo come il metallo. Disegnato con luci impalpabili o scolpito alla maniera degli antichi artigiani. Ampio e aperto come una grande piazza o raccolto, concentrato come una nana bianca. Il corpo riflette l’anima, l’architettura restituisce - quando supera la sua prova - lo spirito del luogo.

E3 East, situated behind the Pavilion, it continues and completes the dialogue, further enriching the already celebrated Milanese square. The lighting design, created by Alexander Bellman with Gruppo C14, accentuates the rhythm of the facade by illuminating the ribs from the inside: the result is a sort of magic lantern effect, it is lit up by its own light and provides a new visual attraction at night in this large, already enchanting, square.

The project included fitting Simes Compact projectors into the pavement and entrance way.

The system of sheets in correspondence with flight of steps which leads to via Melchiorre Gioia changes and is suspended in relation to the planking levels. Here, a painted metal box was specially made to house the projectors and cables.

With the optimisation of positioning elements in the pavement in the public domain in mind,, projectors for the lighting were also installed in the surrounding public walkways in E3 East, including the steps. This decision strengthens the idea of a unitary design in terms of lighting, including individual buildings and public spaces. The projectors in question are Erco Kona, and various types of lights were used (Wide Oval and Spot) according to the lighting requirements.

Bellman underlines that the lighting calculations were updated in tandem with the progress of the construction work on the building: C14 constantly liaised with Mario Cucinella Architects, this meant that channels of communication were always open whilst never compromising the identity of the architecture as a whole.

Lots of projects, a lot of commitment, a passion which never fades: the work we did for piazza Gae Aulenti gave us some unforgettable years. For us, that’s where the challenge lies: observe a space, identify its soul, give it a bodys. Harmonious and symmetrical or odd, unsettling.

Soft or sharp, warm woods or cold metal. Designed with imperceptible lifìghts or sculpted in the style of ancient craftsmen. Wide and open like a big square or collected and concentrated.

The body reflects the soul, architecture – when it passes the test – returns the spirit to a place.

Il sodalizio tr a Peuterey e Gruppo C14 inizia quando il marchio si apre dal mercato italiano a quello europeo. E a noi non sembr a vero di poter lasciare spazio a creatività e immaginazione per riconver tire del tutto il concept retail.

The partnership between Peuterey and Gruppo C14 all started when the brand, previously confined to the Italian market, broke into the European market too. We couldn’t believe our luck when we were given the creative freedom to completely rethink the brand’s retail concept.

Da Parigi a Anversa, da Shanghai a Berlino, il progetto di C14 rende ogni store un contenitore vivo, con forme e finiture che dialogano in uno spazio caratterizzato dall’armonia di materiali accostati in maniera sempre nuova, insolita, fantasiosa.

La nostra idea è quella di esaltare la natura poliedrica dei capi Peuterey attraverso sensazioni tattili e visive avvolgenti, morbide ma dal carattere deciso. Il design delle boutique verte sul contrasto tra linee sinuose e rigide, tra superfici grezze e altre lisce, levigate.

Negli store progettati da Alexander Bellman e Gruppo C14 i tre cerchi del logo Peuterey vengono replicati nella grafica, nel design degli interni, nella disposizione dell’arredo e dei prodotti oltre che negli elementi di illuminazione: una scelta, questa, che permette di definire e affermare l’identità del brand. Sottili barre in ottone a sezione circolare iterate in modo fluido e sinuoso - disegnate per riprendere il fitting flessuoso dei modelli Peuterey - accompagnano il cliente dall’esterno fino al cuore degli spazi vendita, definiti da pareti in cemento casserato con un sistema di appenderie flessibile, caratterizzato da una modularità invisibile di elementi che si muovono liberi. L’andamento delle onde di tubi verticali pendenti definisce l’esposizione. La tradizione dei tubi in ottone viene così reinterpretata e regolata da un modulo matematico. In questo modo le possibilità compositive sono vaste, ma non si esce mai dalle proporzioni dettate dal modulo stesso e dunque da un ordine visivo sempre presente. L’organicità materica di questi spazi sconfinati ha orientato la scelta dei materiali in una direzione precisa: cemento, vetro bronzato e laccato a rappresentare l’identità urbana e moquette, ardesia e ottone bronzato per un ritorno a elementi più naturali, in accordo con la variegata palette Peuterey.

27 From Paris to Antwerp, from Shanghai to Berlin, C14’s design project turns every store into a living container, with lines and finishes which hold a dialogue in a space which is characterised by the harmony of materials juxtaposed in a fresh, unusual, imaginative fashion.

Our idea was to enhance the multi-faceted nature of Peuterey garments through the use of tactile textures and enveloping visuals, soft but with a definite identity. The design of the boutique is hinged on the contrast between slinky and austere lines, rough and smooth, polished surfaces.

In the stores designed by Alexander Bellman and Gruppo C14 the three dots in the Peuterey logo are replicated throughout – in the interior design, the graphic design, in the layout of the furniture and the display of the products as well as the lighting: a choice which allowed for the definition and confirmation of the brand.

Circular sections of slender brass rods are repeated in a fluid, sensuous fashion – designed to reference the graceful lines of the Peuterey creations – they guide customers from the outside right into the heart of the retail space. Definition is added by cement walls featuring a flexible hanging system where an invisible modular system of elements move independently. The movement of this wave of vertical tubing defines the display. The tradition of brass tubing is reinterpreted and regulated by a mathematical module. This means that there is a vast array of possible compositions but the movement never strays from the proportions dictated by the module itself, thus ensuring constant visual order. The organic nature of this space guided the choice of materials in a very precise direction: cement, bronzed glass with a lacquered finish to give an urban fee,l while carpeting, slate and bronzed brass reference a return to more natural elements, in accordance with Peuterey’s variegated palette.

Gli store Peuterey sono, quindi, pensati e inseriti in un progetto organico, ma mantengono ciascuno alcune caratteristiche proprie, dettate anche dal luogo geografico in cui sono ospitati.

Il progetto della facciata dello spazio di Shanghai è stato elaborato in una condizione di assoluta libertà creativa, possibile in virtù del fatto che la metropoli cinese è la città commerciale per eccellenza, che modifica in continuazione la sua struttura urbana sulla base di aperture di mall e business center, una New York orientale in uno stato confusionale di proto-capitalismo, nella cui foga clamorosa sembrano scomparse cultura e tradizioni. In un contesto come quello descritto, ci siamo potuti permettere di immaginare la facciata dello store come una pelle in tensione, un’imponente onda di cilindri, espressione pura del logo Peuterey che diventa tridimensionale e superficiale allo stesso tempo. La luce la disegna e segue le curve morbide, suggerendo in continuazione nuove interpretazioni, visive come emotive. Shanghai e C14 trovano un perfetto punto di incontro nell’esplosività, divertente e divertita, di scelte qui naturali, che altrove sarebbero state estreme.

Di contro Parigi è tradizione, sovrintendenza e regola. Lo shop che abbiamo progettato, quindi, è boutique allo stato puro, ritmo classico. La scansione della vetrina imposta la luce magica e decorativa. Il concept Peuterey Retail Mondo traspira in Rue de Saint’Honoré attraverso una preziosa pelle di ottone, unica e parigina, non replicabile in altro luogo se non lì dove è stata pensata.

Una membrana che filtra interno e esterno, tradizione e innovazione.

Attenta all’evoluzione del gusto e delle tendenze, Peuterey ha impostato con C14 un concept su base annuale che riguarda anche le vetrine delle boutique di tutto il mondo. La sceneggiatura è opera di Peuterey, nei ruoli di ufficio stile e marketing: sono loro che tracciano i contorni delle collezioni, studiano la declinazione dei valori a esse correlati, fissano obiettivi istituzionali e strategie aziendali. Per il nostro primo appuntamento, ad esempio, la scelta è stata il viaggio: la città come luogo per partire e al quale ritornare. Un tema ampio, da interpretare, aperto a mille suggestioni differenti.

29 Peuterey stores, therefore, were designed to fit into an organic project, but they each maintain some of their own individual characteristics which are dictated by the geographical location of the building.

The facade of the Shanghai store was designed with complete creative freedom, this was possible as the Chinese city is a retail mecca. Its urban structure is constantly changing to accomodate the opening of new shopping malls and business centres – a sort of Eastern New York in a state of proto-capitalist flux, where culture and traditions get lost in the hustle and bustle. Within this context we were able to imagine the store facade like a taut skin, an imposing wave of cylinders, a pure expression of the Peuterey logo – simultaneously three-dimensional and flat. The light shapes the facade and follows the soft curves, constantly suggesting new interpretations, both visual and emotional. Shanghai and C14 come together seamlessly in an explosion of fun, design choices which while perfectly natural here, anywhere else would have been too extreme.

In complete contrast, Paris stands for tradition, authority and rules. The store we designed, therefore, is a boutique in its purest form, with a classic rhythm. The positioning of the windows creates magical, decorative light on the facade. The concept for Peuterey Retail Mondo on Rue de Saint’Honoré is expressed via a luxurious brass skin, unique and utterly Parisian, it couldn’t be replicated anywhere else but here, where it was designed for. A membrane which filters the interior and the exterior, tradition and innovation.

Ever conscious of the evolution of taste and trends, Peuterey together with C14, created a concept, on an annual basis, which relates to the windows of boutiques all over the world. The display is all Peuterey’s work, the style and marketing office: they are the ones who craft the collection, study the translation of correlated values, set institutional objectives and corporate strategy.

For our first meeting, for instance, the chosen theme was travel. A broad subject, open to interpretation and a thousand different ideas.

Noi lo abbiamo elaborato e affinato ispirandoci al cinema: dopo un’analisi dell’idea di città che emerge dal lavoro dei maggiori registi della storia, C14 ha presentato un progetto unitario dal titolo “Viaggio nelle città del cinema”.

Un salto nel passato più o meno remoto ripescando linguaggi e stilemi di grandi maestri, da Frinz Lang a Ridley Scott: vere e proprie locandine cinematografiche che anticipano un mondo, un messaggio, giocando sul riflesso condizionato e inconscio che qualcosa di ciò che osserviamo, in piedi di fronte alla vetrina, fa parte in qualche modo della storia di ognuno di noi.

La vetrina contemporanea è curata come una pagina pubblicitaria, in cui il prodotto in sé non svolge un ruolo predominante rispetto alla sua impaginazione, all’atmosfera che lo avvolge e ne racconta la storia, le origini, i motivi.

Il prodotto, anche qui, è la sua narrazione. La vetrina è un filtro, una mano che sfiora la spalla del passante distratto, che gli sussurra un messaggio intrigante e mai invadente. Ma è anche una soglia, la porta di accesso a un mondo diverso da quello in cui il nostro spettatore si trovava prima che lo catturassimo.

In generale, pensiamo che un progetto retail possa definirsi attuale solo quando, pur mantenendo chiari ed evidenti i concetti e gli elementi che lo caratterizzano, contiene gli strumenti adatti per modificarsi a seconda di quello che, nei testi di architettura ormai caduti in disuso, viene definito “genius loci”. Nel caso di Peuterey lo facciamo in gran parte con lo studio della superficie, pura essenza: e così coesistono i concetti di modularità e di tailor made.

We developed and honed this idea by drawing inspiration from film: following indepth analysis of the idea of a city emerging from the work of the very best film directors in history, C14 presented a unitary project entitled “A journey into the cities in film”. A look at the not too distant past and the language and style of the grand masters, from Fritz Lang to Ridley Scott: actual film posters which give an insight into another world, send out a message, whilst playing on the kneejerk response we have to something we look at, standing there in front of the store window, in some way it is part of everybody’s past.

The contemporary store window is designed as an advertsement where the product itself doesn’t play a predominant role in relation to the setting, to the surrounding atmosphere, it tells a story and reveals the origins. Here too, the product is its own story. The window is a filter, a hand which brushes the shoulder of a distracted passerby, it whispers an intriguing message, never intrusively. It is also a threshold, an entryway to a different world to the one our spectator was accustomed to before we captured him.

Generally speaking, we believe that a retail design project can be defined as being topical only when it maintains clear, evident concepts and characteristics, whilst still including the necessary tools for change, according to the somewhat dated term found in old architecture books: genius loci. In the case of Peuterey, this was achieved mostly by studying the surface, pure essence: thus we have the coexistence of the two concepts of modularity and tailor- made.

A C14 ci teniamo molto a essere italiani: del Bel Paese ci piace (quasi) tutto, o comunque moltissimo, e siamo felici quando il nostro lavoro riesce a valorizzare luoghi e spazi che sono un bene comune (penso ai progetti per la Vener anda Fabbrica del Duomo, o per piazza Gae Aulenti). Pure, non si può negare che viaggiare per lavoro sia il modo migliore e più af fascinante per scoprire il mondo. Il business tr aveller gode di un punto di vista assolutamente privilegiato rispetto al semplice turista: conosce la nazione che lo ospita lavor ando, ossia svolgendo dav vero la vita dei suoi abitanti. Per questo accettiamo sempre con entusiasmo quando ci propongono progetti all ’estero.

Here at C14, being Italian means a lot to us: we like (nearly) all of our Bel Paese, or at least a large part of it, and we’re happy when our work manages to enhance places or areas which are enjoyed by the general public (such as the project for Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, or for piazza Gae Aulenti). Also, there’s no denying the fact that travelling for work is the best and most interesting way of seeing the world. A business traveller has a privileged viewpoint compared to that of a simple tourist: they get to know the country they are staying in by working in it, in other words really living the life of its inhabitants. This is why we always jump at the chance to carry out projects abroad.

Da tempo la Cina ci ha abituato a affascinanti sorprese nel settore dell’architettura d’interni, e sta diventando uno dei laboratori più interessanti per comprendere le nuove tendenze. L’imprenditore Tony Lu, fra i protagonisti dell’importazione del gusto occidentale in Cina, racconta : “Oggi in Cina sempre più persone amano il design italiano contemporaneo, mentre solo tre anni fa la gente, e in particolare le persone più benestanti, i ricchi, erano interessati soprattutto a interni tradizionali, diciamo in stile neoclassico.

Ma le cose stanno cambiando. Oggi le persone si sono stancate di ambienti così carichi, si potrebbe dire così pesanti. Oggi in Cina si preferisce la contemporaneità, la ricerca del comfort e di soluzioni più minimaliste”.

Tony Lu e C14 collaborano dal 2016, anno in cui è stato inaugurato a Hangzhou, con grande successo, ForD. Casa, uno show-room pensato per accogliere le eccellenze del lusso internazionale nel settore dell’home design con un avveniristico spazio diviso in due edifici distinti ma vicini, il Zancheng Plaza e il Taihe.

For D. Casa è uno spazio dedicato all’arredamento soprattutto (anche se non solo) italiano, che viene presentato e esaltato - in qualche misura - dalla cura della cornice, ossia dello spazio stesso. C14 progetta una sorta di Wunderkammer in cui ogni scorcio è un’invenzione, una scoperta, un’esperienza di design totale di cui si può godere anche di notte, quando le pareti esterne dell’edificio vengono illuminate permettendo, con un suggestivo gioco di trasparenze, di vedere gli showroom dall’esterno. Tony Lu aveva un obiettivo: educare il gusto del pubblico cinese, avido di novità ma ancora incapace di scegliere.

37 For some time now we have been used to China surprising us in the interior design sector, and it is fast becoming one of the most interesting places to spot new trends. The entrepreneur Tony Lu, one of China’s leading importers of Western style, says : “Nowadays in China, more and more people love contemporary Italian design, while only three years ago people, particularly wealthy people, were more interested in traditional interiors, in the neo-classical style. But things are changing. Today people are tired of such over-loaded, heavy-looking interiors. Now it’s all about achieving a contemporary look, the quest for comfort and pared-back solutions”.

Tony Lu and C14 have been working together since 2016, the year in which ForD. Casa was opened to great acclaim in Hangzou. This showroom was designed to bring together all the examples of excellence of international luxury within the sector of home design and house them in a futuristic space divided into two distinct buildings: Zancheng Plaza and the Taihe building.

For D. Casa is devoted to home decor, especially, but not exclusively, Italian home decor. It is presented and enhanced, to a certain extent, by the attention to the setting, in other words to the space itself. C14 designed a sort of Wunderkammer where every corner is an invention, a discovery, a total design experience which can also be enjoyed at night, when the outside of the building lights up and creates an interesting light display and reveals the interior of the showroom. Tony Lu had a goal in mind: teach Chinese people about taste as they are greedy for new products but don’t know how to make choices.

Il cliente chiede di progettare non un mall, ma uno showroom dall’aria più domestica, un ambiente elegante ma informale in cui i singoli marchi non siano giustapposti l’uno all’altro, ma esposti in un unico contenitore disegnato ad hoc. C14 si impegna, quindi, nella direzione artistica di un progetto ambizioso, occupandosi di coordinare l’immagine di numerosi brand per ottenere un risultato che li armonizzi tutti senza snaturarne nessuno. Gli spazi sono collegati visivamente da pattern geometrici e irregolari, creati attraverso un’attenta selezione dei materiali: molto particolari i rivestimenti delle pareti in ottone spazzolato con tintura metal effect finish paintings, che si declinano diversamente con personalità ma, anche, con un’uniformità stilistica di base. La scelta dell’ottone, inoltre, richiama immediatamente il lavoro di C14, che spesso sceglie di utilizzare questo materiale nei suoi progetti.

The client asked us not to design a shopping mall, but to design a showroom that felt like a home, a tasteful yet informal environment where single brands weren’t competing against one another but displayed in a specially-designed single container.

C14 took on the creative control of this ambitious project, and was in charge of co-ordinating the display of the numerous brands so that they all co-existed in harmony but did not detract from each other. The spaces are visually connected by geometric, irregular patterns created by means of carefully selected materials: the walls are highly unusual with their covering of brushed brass with a special painted finish. The spaces are all different with a distinct personality yet have an underlying similar stylistic basis, thus creating uniformity. In addition, brass is something of a hallmark for C14, the studio often uses this particular material in its projects.

38 Il successo è tale che non stupisce il fatto che l’imprenditore decida, l’anno successivo, di inaugurare un nuovo show-room dedicato esclusivamente all’interior design internazionale.

E voglia affidarne la completa progettazione a C14.

In questo caso si è trattato di costruire uno spazio nuovo ma all’interno del Deerlook, il grande centro commerciale di Hangzhou, città fra le più dinamiche e innovative dell’Impero Celeste.

C14 sceglie di intervenire in maniera fortemente distintiva già nella progettazione dell’esterno dell’edificio: la facciata viene ricoperta con una sorta di edera futuristica, agganciata a una sottostruttura, che si estende parzialmente anche sullo spazio attiguo. Le foglie metalliche, composte da elementi romboidali affiancati (a comporre un esagono) e verniciate rame, riflettono il contesto creando giochi di luce e di forme; l’illuminazione ne esalta la geometria tramite corpi illuminanti nascosti all’interno di un taglio orizzontale, che lavorano dall’alto verso il basso.

Per quanto concerne la struttura degli spazi, il progetto rispetta la circolarità del centro commerciale nella disposizione interna dei pilastri posizionati in radiali concentriche, mentre sottolinea gli assi principali con partizioni di gusto industriale realizzate in ferro e vetro.

The project was so successful that it was no surprise when the following year the entrepreneur decided to open a new show-room devoted exclusively to international interior design. And C14 was entrusted with the entire project.

This second commission involved building a new space but inside Deerlook, the large shopping centre in Hangzhou, one of the most dynamic and innovative cities in the Celestial Empire. C14 decided on a highly distinctive approach, beginning with the design of the outside of the building: the facade was covered with a sort of futuristic ivy attached to an underlying structure which also partially extended to the adjacent space.

The metallic leaves, composed of diamond shapes (placed together to form hexagons) and painted copper, reflect the context by creating an interesting interplay of light and shapes; the lighting enhances this geometry through the use of downwards lighting concealed in a horizontal slit.

As far as the structure of the spaces is concerned, the design respects the circular shape of the shopping centre and the internal layout of columns in concentric circles, while underlining the the main axes with industrial-style partitions made of glass and iron.

40 Per quanto concerne la struttura degli spazi, il progetto rispetta la circolarità del centro commerciale nella disposizione interna dei pilastri posizionati in radiali concentriche, mentre sottolinea gli assi principali con partizioni di gusto industriale realizzate in ferro e vetro.

Alexander Bellman racconta: “Avevamo l’esigenza di trovare una soluzione che creasse un legame tra l’esistente e il nostro intervento, senza rinunciare alla volontà di lasciare un segno evidente che rompesse con la modularità del rivestimento del Deerlook”. Una sfida non da poco.

Inaugurato da pochi mesi, il Chengzahn Rd. Showroom è un innovativo spazio di grande suggestione, pensato per attrarre un pubblico giovane, internazionale, appassionato di design e attento al gusto occidentale: 800 mq dedicati all’arredamento, in un’atmosfera accogliente e informale. Lo showroom è stato pensato come un grande open space ma, al contempo, come uno spazio domestico, in cui ogni stanza si presenta in più declinazioni diverse.

Il visitatore si muove quindi tra gli ambienti, che si aprono l’uno nell’altro come scatole cinesi: dalla zona living si passa alla sala da pranzo e lo stile cambia, come se ci si trovasse in un’altra casa. Ampie vetrate, pannelli divisori in legno di eucalipto, lamelle in noce suddividono arredando, senza appesantire ma, anzi, ponendosi esse stesse come scelte di design cariche di personalità. Armonica la scelta dei colori: ai legni si affiancano pitturazioni in grigio e verde che si sposano cromaticamente, e anche semanticamente, con l’alternanza di graniglia e legno di noce delle pavimentazioni.

Altri marchi celebri del design italiano - Kartell, Poltrona Frau, Gallotti&Radice, Cassina - hanno qui un loro spazio anche se principalmente esposti in ForD Casa.

Gli showroom di Tony Lu sono la casa del lusso in Cina, ambienti unici dove il pubblico può acquistare mentre trae ispirazione dallo spazio stesso: i brand-icona dell’arredamento italiano - Armani Casa, Fendi Casa, Bottega Veneta Home, Fontana Arte, Poltrona Frau, Venini, Flos, Kartell, Giorgetti e molti altri - offrono al pubblico cinese un assaggio del gusto del nostro Paese.

As far as the structure of the spaces is concerned, the design respects the circular shape of the shopping centre and the internal layout of columns in concentric circles, while underlining the the main axes with industrial-style partitions made of glass and iron.

Alexander Bellman explains: “We needed to find a solution which created a connection between the existing building and our intervention, without compromising the desire to leave a clear mark that interrupted the modularity of Deerlook”. That’s quite a challenge.

It opened just a few months ago and the Chengzahn Rd. Showroom is an impressive space indeed, designed to attract the young, international consumers with a taste for design and an interest in Western style: 800 m2 devoted to homeware in an informal, welcoming setting. The showroom was designed as a large-scale open space but, at the same time, like a domestic environment, where every room is styled differently.

And so visitors move through the different spaces, they open up inside each other like Russian dolls: the lounge area leads to the dining rooms and there is a shift in style, as though it were in another house. Glass windows, dividing screens made of eucalyptus and walnut panels punctuate the space without making it seem heavy, on the contrary, they are design choices loaded with personality. The colour palette is harmonious: wood is juxtaposed with grey and green paint which sit happily with the alternate terrazzo tiles and walnut flooring.

Other celebrated Italian brands - Kartell, Poltrona Frau, Gallotti&Radice, Cassina – have their own space here, althought they are mainly on display here at ForD Casa.

Tony Lu’s showrooms are the home of luxury in China, unique environments where vustonmers can shop while drawing inspiration from the space itself: iconic Italian design brands - Armani Casa, Fendi Casa, Bottega Veneta Home, Fontana Arte, Poltrona Frau, Venini, Flos, Kartell, Giorgetti to name but a few – offer Chinese consumers a taste of Italian style.

I progetti in Estremo Oriente sono avventure indimenticabili per C14, che hanno portato tanto lavoro e grandi soddisfazioni: fra queste ci piace sicuramente citare Raffles City.

Un quartiere cittadino che si sviluppa in verticale. Un luogo che include tutto - case, alberghi, svaghi, servizi, sport, shopping - e dove tutto è interconnesso. Uno spazio del futuro, un punto di confluenza pensato per migliorare l’esperienza urbana di residenti e visitatori. In un’ottica green, perché l’ambiente è altamente sostenibile.

Questo, e molto altro ancora, è Raffles City, ad Hangzhou in Qianjiang New Town, nel cuore del quartiere centrale degli affari. E Gruppo C14 è stato chiamato a partecipare al progetto.

Projects in the Far East are unforgettable adventures for C14, they provide a lot of work and immense satisfaction: one of our favourites is Raffles City.

This is an area of the city which has developed vertically. A place which has everything – houses, hotels, entertainment, services, sport, shopping – and where everything is interconnected. A futuristic space, a point of confluence designed to improve residents’ and visitors’ experience. From an ecological point of view, the environment is highly sustainable.

This is Raffles City, in Hangzhou, in Qianjiang New Town, right in the heart of the business district. And Gruppo C14 was called on to take part in the project.

45 Il visitatore è accolto in uno spazio di assoluto prestigio, in cui si respirano fascino, eleganza e cultura: la spina dorsale dell’appartamento, infatti, è costituita da un’imponente libreria, una vera e propria biblioteca a disposizione degli ospiti che ha anche la funzione di suddividere gli ambienti, marcando il passaggio dalla zona privata a quella più “social”.

Marmi preziosi, in toni cromatici che vanno dal bianco al nero con venature dorate. Le ampie vetrate con profili in ottone sono disegnate ad hoc da C14: i pattern delle trame costituiscono una sorta di fil rouge che lega tra loro i progetti che lo studio ha curato in Cina. Pitture materiche, ferro, legni rigati lavorati artigianalmente per la separazione degli spazi. Noce.

La ricerca dei materiali è stata fondamentale per il progetto del 54° piano della torre: un ambiente dove il lusso si sposa con la più calda ospitalità, un luogo in cui sentirsi attesi, coccolati.

Visitors are greeted by a highly prestigious space, where one breathes class, elegance and culture: the backbone of the apartment in fact is an imposing bookcase for visitors, which separates the space and marks the shift from the private area to the more “social” space.

Precious marble, in shades ranging from white to black with gold veining. The large windows with brass edging were specially made by C14: the patterns are a sort of common thread which connects C14’s projects in China. Textured paint, iron, hand-crafted wood separating screens. Walnut wood. The selection of materials was crucial for the 54° floor of the tower: an environment where luxury meets warm hospitality, a place where visitors feel welcome and pampered.

Le scelte di lighting seguono i principi fondamentali di C14: le luci arredano, riscaldano, sono presenze discrete ma percepibili. Ogni dettaglio si inserisce in un percorso di ricerca del comfort e dell’estetica: per esempio, l’impianto di condizionamento viene integrato nelle gole di luce, così da nascondere alla viste le griglie di emissione dell’aria. Gli ambienti invitano a rilassarsi, a chiacchierare, e anche l’argomento più business oriented può essere affrontato in un’atmosfera amichevole.

The lighting design follows the fundamental principles of C14: the lighting embellishes and warms the environment, its presence is discrete yet perceptible. Every detail is part of the quest for comfort and aesthetics: for example, the airconditioning system is integrated in the lighting system, so as to conceal the vents. The space invites visitors to relax, and even the most business-oriented conversation can be held in an informal setting.

49 Dalla Cina all’Europa, Gruppo C14 risponde quando la committenza lascia intravedere la possibilità di lavorare con fantasia, coraggio, desiderio di sperimentare e piacere di superarsi per trovare soluzioni originali e mai scontate.

E questo è l’approccio che abbiamo trovato quando siamo stati chiamati per partecipare alla Top Arena International a Valkenswaard, in Olanda, progetto che nasce più dal sogno visionario di un campione che da uno strutturato business plan.

Jan Tops, medaglia d’oro di salto a ostacoli alle Olimpiadi del 1992 e ora fra i migliori preparatori di cavalli al mondo, coltivava da tempo l’idea di uno spazio multifunzionale, dedicato allo sport - certo - ma aperto al pubblico come luogo di intrattenimento, di divertimento, di cultura, arte e buona cucina. Un’arena dove, quindi, i giorni di competizione sportiva potessero essere trascorsi all’insegna dell’hospitality di più alto livello.

Siamo stati interpellati, a gennaio 2015, per l’arredamento degli interni: abbiamo subito inteso come il progetto dovesse inserire un’idea concettuale - basata su un’eleganza estrema ma non esibita - in una rigida griglia funzionale.

Il guscio architettonico della struttura è stato concepito per ospitare un gran numero di ospiti e per offrire loro, oltre a una visibilità perfetta dei campi da ogni punto dell’area, anche un comfort straordinario.

Ovviamente, quindi, il lavoro di progettazione doveva tenere conto di entrambe le esigenze.

Il primo edificio, lo Spider Building, comprende gli uffici operativi e, al primo piano, la passerella in legno che conduce all’area riservata all’accoglienza degli spettatori vip: l’approccio alla struttura rivela già i caratteri fondamentali dell’intervento attraverso l’uso delle ampie vetrate, delle fibre naturali, dei toni caldi del marrone.

From China to Europe, Gruppo C14 responds when the design brief opens a window to the chance to work with imagination, daring and the desire to experiment and to outdo ourselves so as to find original, unusual solutions.

This was the precisely the approach we adopted when we were called upon to take part in the Top Arena International project at Valkenswaard, in Holland, a project which was born more from a dream-like vision of a champion more than from a structured business plan.

Jan Tops, a show-jumping gold-medallist at the 1992 Olympics, today is one of the best horse trainers in the world, and had long dreamed of a multi-functional space, devoted to sport – of course – but open to the public as a place for entertainment, fun, culture, art and quality cuisine. An arena where sports events could be held in an environment boasting the highest level of hospitality.

In January 2015, we were called upon to do the interior design: we immediately thought that the project should include a conceptual idea – based on extreme, but not obvious, elegance – within in a rigid functional framework.

The architectural shell of the building was designed to cater for a large number of visitors and to offer them not only a perfect view of the grounds, from every angle of the area, but also extraordinary comfort. Obviously then, the final design had to keep both these factors in mind throughout.

The first building, called the Spider Building, houses the offices, the first floor is home to the wooden walkway which leads to the reserved VIP area: the approach to the building already reveals the fundamental characteristics of the design, namely, large windows, natural materials and warm shades of brown.

The Royal Building houses the guest rooms, the essence here is the quality of the materials and the overall atmosphere of the space: every single detail was designed to communicate the concept, so as to allow spectators to focus on the sporting event (the undisputed magnet, around which the entire arena revolves) within an environment which was really designed to be at its service.

Our challenge was to imagine, while working to a tight schedule, a cosy solution, warm and inviting and with a distinct identity: “Inspiration is an idea, not an object, nor anything else. It’s a soft idea of style”, explains Alexander Bellman. But to avoid letting this idea of style become too classic, all the elements were designed singularly with their own individual personality: for instance, the circular bars in the Royal building boast s-shaped wood detailing.

The lighting design, which includes all the interiors as well as outside, apart from the technical lighting for the grounds of course, culminates in the Spider Building where we designed a bespoke chandelier inspired by a stylised jumping horse, which was in turn inspired by Jan Tops’ logo. This extraordinary object is composed of a mirror-effect steel plate and approximately 150 frames, tiny lanterns which form an image: a single dynamic white light source adds movement to the structure via the shift from warm white to cold white light.

The change is so gradual as to seem almost imperceptible.

51 Per l’edificio Royal, destinato alla permanenza degli ospiti, il nocciolo fondamentale di interesse era costituito dalla qualità dei materiali e dall’atmosfera complessiva dell’ambiente: ogni dettaglio è stato studiato per comunicare il concept, così da permettere allo spettatore di concentrarsi sullo spettacolo sportivo (indiscusso polo di attrazione intorno cui tutta l’arena ruota) in un ambiente pensato per essere veramente al suo servizio.

La nostra sfida è stata quella di immaginare, in tempi assai ristretti, una soluzione cozy, accogliente e calda che avesse anche una sua marcata impronta originale: “L’ispirazione è un’idea, non un oggetto né nient’altro. È una morbida idea di stile”, spiega Alexander Bellman. Per evitare, però, che questo stile scivolasse troppo nel classico, tutti gli elementi sono stati disegnati singolarmente con un loro carattere distintivo: ad esempio, i banchi bar circolari nell’edificio Royal presentano ogni dettaglio rifinito in legno a doppia curvatura.

Il progetto di illuminazione, che ha riguardato tutti gli interni e gli esterni a eccezione, ovviamente, delle aree tecniche del campo, culmina nello Spider Building ove trova posto un lampadario disegnato ad hoc il cui spunto nasce dalla stilizzazione di un cavallo in salto, che si ispira al logo di Jan Tops.

Lo straordinario oggetto si compone di una piastra superiore in acciaio nichelato specchiante con circa 150 frame, piccole lanterne che vanno a comporre l’immagine: un unico proiettore con effetto dinamic white dà movimento alla scultura attraverso un passaggio da luce calda a luce fredda che avviene in maniera tanto lenta da essere quasi impercettibile.

Un lavoro seguito con un’amica speciale come Anna Maria Conticelli, che abbiamo avuto a fianco anche nelle straordinarie esperienze con un brand prestigioso come Loro Piana, per il quale ci siamo occupati degli interni degli show-room Loro Piana Interiors in alcune fra le più belle città del mondo - Parigi, Los Angeles e la nostra Milano. A queste si aggiungono le due lounge delle quali abbiamo curato l’allestimento: la prima è una raffinata Library che arricchisce, con il suo stile sofisticato, la sede di Sotheby’s a New York. Lo spazio è immaginato come un angolo riservato e accogliente che consenta ai collezionisti di rilassarsi sfogliando i cataloghi d’asta o di valutare le opere d’arte in un’atmosfera elegante e informale. Si trova a Dubai, invece, la seconda lounge: in particolare, all’interno del Dubai Mall - il più grande del mondo. Un luogo avveniristico, un tempio dello shopping, pensato per stupire: qui, lo stile Loro Piana si fa notare per il garbo, l’eleganza inconfondibile ma sempre sussurrata, la morbidezza dei toni.

Jan Tops’ horse, so original and unexpected, can be interpreted as a symbol of a difficult project, rich with appeal and destined to be a roaring success. We carried out this project alongside a special friend of ours, Anna Maria Conticelli, she was also by our side during our extraordinary projects with the prestigious brand Loro Piana, in fact we oversaw the interior design of the Loro Piana Interiors showrooms in some of the most beautiful cities in the world - Paris, Los Angeles and our very own Milan. We also did the interior of two lounges together: the first is a chic library which adds richness to the already sophisticated Sotheby’s in New York. The aim was to create a reserved, inviting corner where collectors could relax and peruse the auction catalogues or assess the works of art in an elegant, informal atmosphere. The second lounge, on the other hand, is in Dubai: specifically, inside the Dubai Mall – the world’s biggest. This place is truly futuristic, a shrine to retail and designed to impress: here, Loro Piana’s style stands out for its mild manners, its understated elegance and the softness of its colour palette.

Interior designer, interior consultant, events organiser, the queen of elegance and spotter of trends: Anna Maria is all this and more to us, and not just to us. This is how she describes herself and her work. “Despite the fact that design plays a crucial part in the process, my work is all about soul. It involves pathos, instinct, intutition and above all, beauty”. And beauty must always predominate in the Loro Piana showrooms.

These spaces we designed are truly enchanting, places where modern style blends with timeless, traditional elements. Magical fabrics - soft, precious, crafted by expert hands so they are as light as a feather – are the main protagonists of exclusive locations, visitors are welcomed and cocooned in a comfortable, almost homely environment.

Fresh flowers, warm lighting, armchairs and sofas upholstered in luxury fabrics, natural wood: every single element is designed to create a discretely elegant space, perfectly in line with the Loro Piana brand and the style of Anna Maria Conticelli who, had some flattering things to say about her affinity with Gruppo C14: “During all the projects we’ve worked on together there has always been a strong sense of complicity. My point of view has always been supported even when I was absent, when I wasn’t there physically: we’re always on the same page. I feel an absolute part of Gruppo C14: there’s always an incredible sense of completeness in the projects we do together because you’re always so thorough, there’s room for the coldness of rendering just as much as the inclusion of a handmade drawing, a watercolour, a splash of colour”.

A noi di C14 piace sederci a tavola. Ci piace fare pace davanti a un caf fè. Ci piace risolvere problemi, discutere disegni, sognare nuovi orizzonti, terminare lunghe giornate di lavoro mangiandoci le tagliatelle e l ’arrosto al Barolo.

Amiamo conoscere nuovi clienti brindando con loro al lavoro che verr à.

Questo per dire che, ov viamente, ogni progetto nel settore del food viene accolto con entusiasmo dal nostro studio.

E negli ultimi tempi abbiamo avuto un bel daf fare in questo campo.

Here at C14 we like to sit at the table. We like to hash things out over a coffee. We like to solve problems, talk about design plans, dream about new horizons, end a long working day with a plate of tagliatelle and Barolo meat sauce. We like to get to know new clients by toasting future projects.

This is to say, obviously, that our studio welcomes any project in the food sector with open arms.

And lately, excuse the pun, but we’ve had our plate full, in this particular area.

Tutto inizia nel 2011, quando - con un certo spirito di avventura - accettiamo di occuparci degli interni di Locanda Chiaravalle, nuovissimo spazio ospitato nell’Hotel Borgonuovo, un progetto di riqualificazione di un antico edificio nel centro del borgo di Chiaravalle, a due passi dall’Abbazia. La posizione e il clima che si respirano alla Locanda sono unici: a pochi chilometri da Porta Romana, il tempo sembra essersi fermato. Il verde dei prati, il rosso dei papaveri, i vecchi muri di campagna invitano al riposo. Ma noi siamo qui per lavorare, e lavoriamo: la taverna che ci hanno affidato deve risorgere a nuova vita, brillando di modernità senza dimenticare le sue origini.

I pavimenti originali, a scacchi, sono meravigliosi: un link perfetto tra il presente e la storia di ieri. Luci e tavoli raccontano la propria piena appartenenza all’oggi, ma in sottofondo si distingue il sussurro delle sedie e degli arredi vintage, frutto di ricerche certosine nelle botteghe artigiane e nei mercatini locali: il passato non muore mai. Il fantasma di Chiaravalle pare soddisfatto: il suo posto preferito non ha perso un’oncia di charme.

Partono dal centro di Milano, anche se non si fermano qui, altre due sfide cui C14 crede moltissimo: Caffè Napoli e il ristorante Miscusi, esperienze di retail molto diverse fra loro, ma entrambe accolte con entusiasmo dal pubblico.

It all started in 2011, when – armed with a strong sense of adventure – we agreed to do the interior decor at Locanda Chiaravalle, the new space at Hotel Borgonuovo, a renovation project of an ancient building in the historical centre of Chiaravalle, a stone’s throw from the Abbey. The Locanda’s position and atmosphere are unique: even though it’s only a few miles away from Milan’s busy Porta Romana area, time seems to have stood still. The green fields, the red poppies and the crumbling country walls are an invitation to slow down and relax. But we were there to work and work we did: the eatery we were entrusted with had to be brought back to life and shine with modernity whilst retaining its historical beginnings.

The original chequer-board floor is spectacular: the perfect link between the present and the history of yesterday. The lighting and tables tell their own story about their complete belonging to the present, while in the background one can hear whisperings from vintage chairs and complementary furnishing, the result of meticulously combing antique shops and flea markets: the past lives on for ever. Chiaravalle’s ghost seems quite happy with the result: the place hasn’t lost an ounce of its original charm.

Another two challenges C14 is very invested in also start from the centre of Milan, but they don’t stop there: Caffè Napoli and the Miscusi restaurant, two very different retail experiences but both of them warmly welcomed by the general public.

Il primo Caffè Napoli viene inaugurato nel 2015 in Largo La Foppa con l’obiettivo di portare nel capoluogo meneghino il vero caffè napoletano: lo spazio fisico diventa proiezione di un luogo della mente, evoca atmosfere ma, soprattutto, invita alla relazione con gli altri, aprendosi verso l’esterno con le ampie vetrate sul fronte strada.

Ricorda Mauro Compagnoni, fra gli ideatori del format: “Dopo tanti anni di lavoro nel digital è stato emozionante tornare al rapporto con il pubblico, al front end, alla ricerca nella parte commerciale. Avere un locale su strada è una grande opportunità di conoscere persone, di fare incontri che, a volte, possono cambiarti la vita”. Il progetto di C14 vince la scommessa e regala ai milanesi non tanto uno spaccato di Napoli, quanto un nuovo modo di intendere il caffè.

“Insieme a C14 siamo riusciti a creare un ambiente assolutamente nuovo rispetto al bar tradizionale”, racconta ancora Mauro. “La casa napoletana che costituisce la nostra location è, nell’immaginario collettivo, il luogo per eccellenza del caffè. Il pubblico è attirato non solo dal prodotto, ma dall’idea nel suo complesso”. Pavimenti in maiolica, vecchi arredi pieni di storia, tavolini con il piano di mattonelle: a Caffè Napoli il gusto del caffè riassume l’esperienza partenopea senza esaurirla.

The first Caffè Napoli opened in 2015 in Largo La Foppa in Milan with the aim of introducing real Neapolitan coffee to the city: the physical space was designed as the projection of a place in people’s minds, evoking an atmosphere, but more importantly encouraging interaction between people by means of the large-scale windows opening up directly onto the pavement. Mauro Compagnoni, one of the creators of the format, looks back saying: “After many years working in the digital field it was thrilling to engage with people again, at the front end, right in the heart of commerce. Having a street café gives you the chance to meet people and experience situations that can be lifechanging sometimes”. C14’s design was a winner and gave the city of Milan a slice of Naples, but more importantly it taught people a new way to enjoy coffee.

“Together with C14 we managed to create something which was completely new compared to traditional cafés”, continues Mauro. “Our environment, the Neapolitan house, resides in the collective imagination, and is the home of coffee, par excellence. Patrons are not only attracted to the project, they are drawn to the idea as a whole”. Majolica tiled-floors, antique decorative objects steeped in history, tables topped with white tiles: at Caffè Napoli the coffee experience has the feel of Naples without being too heavy-handed.

Anche in questo caso C14 esalta il valore della tradizione creando uno spazio in cui ogni passaggio della lavorazione del piatto - dalla molitura del grano alla trafilatura della pasta fino all’impiattamento - rimane a disposizione di chi vuole osservare. I due giovanissimi soci, Alberto Cartasegna e Filippo Mottolese, hanno ideato un locale dal target molto ampio, con un’impostazione pienamente millennial.

I ristoranti Miscusi si rivolgono a un pubblico che “viaggia, assaggia, comunica, conosce il mondo ed è molto difficile avere buoni risultati se non ci sono competenza e chiarezza da parte di chi offre. Al centro c’è comunque il prodotto, come dimostra anche il successo dei vostri amici di Caffè Napoli: noi abbiamo sempre lavorato sulla pasta e, in particolare, sulla tradizione della pasta”, spiega Filippo Mottolese.

Cucina e pastificio, dunque, sono a vista: l’accento è posto sulla qualità delle materie prime e sulla loro lavorazione, che deve essere una garanzia. Il progetto di interni gioca sulla proposta di soluzioni differenziate e sull’armonia ricreata dalla loro convivenza. Lunghe assi di legno formano la tavolata comune, le mensole in prossimità del pastificio e i tavolini in lamiera metallica riprendono questo concetto.

I colori caldi - mattone, verde, rosso - e i materiali antichi, come il ferro crudo, il rovere e il marmo, accolgono con discrezione, aiutando gli ospiti a trovare la giusta dimensione dopo una giornata di lavoro.

Miscusi, which opened in 2017, flies the flag for another example of Italian excellence: pasta. Once again, C14 enhances the value of tradition by creating a space where every step in the process of creating a dish – from milling the flour to creating the pasta through to plating up the finished product – is visible to whomever wishes to observe. The two young partners, Alberto Cartasegna and Filippo Mottolese, created an eatery with a very broad target range, but with a definite millennial layout. Miscusi restaurants are designed for people who “travel, taste, communicate, are familiar with the world, it’s extremely hard to get good results if there is a lack of skill and clarity from the people offering a product. The product is always at the heart of the project, this is illustrated by the success of your friends at Caffè Napoli: we’ve always worked with pasta, and especially, the tradition of pasta”, explains Filippo Mottolese.

An open kitchen and pasta- making on show: the emphasis is on quality raw materials and their preparation, which must be an absolute guarantee. The interior design explores a variety of solutions and the harmonious way they work together. Long planks of wood form refectory tables as well as the shelving near the pasta- making area, this concept is echoed by the sheet metal used for the tables.

A warm colour palette - brick, green, red – and old-fashioned materials, such as raw iron, walnut and marble, create a welcome, low-key atmosphere and invite visitors to unwind after a long day’s work in the city.
