A delineare gli argomenti di questo numero è stata un’appassionata, noiosa e superficiale discussione sull’evoluzione delle regole del progetto nella storia dell’architettura, avvenuta in studio qualche tempo fa. I temi stra-noti impropriamente coinvolti erano la sezione aurea, trattati come il “De Architectura” di Vitruvio e il manifesto del Movimento Moderno di Le Corbusier, per poi concludere con considerazioni sul manuale dell’architetto del ‘29.

Presentiamo delle “installazioni effimere”, nelle quali il tema della proporzione e della misura umana viene reinterpretato in modo leggero: le ispirazioni sono varie e variabili. Dalla casa delle Barbie, indiscusso centro di attrazione sessuale infantile di noi maschi degli anni ‘70 (la Barbie intendo, non la casa), gli automi settecenteschi/ fantascientifici che diventano elementi di brand-identity, a Gulliver vestito da lillipuziani metà sarti e metà costruttori e “Playground”, curato da Diorama Editions.

Con mio grande dispiacere, il tema delle Barbie non è stato pubblicato per motivi di censura: è stato invece sostituito da una fantastica rubrica sulla Biennale, molto più interessante e raffinata, in effetti.

This issue is distinguished by a passionate, boring, and superficial discussion about the evolution of the rules of design in the history of architecture that took place at the studio some time ago.

The well-known topics improperly involved were the golden ratio, treatises such as Vitruvius’s De Architectura, and Le Corbusier’s manifesto of the Modern Movement, concluding with considerations on the architect’s 1929 manual.

We are presenting “ephemeral installations”, in which the subject of proportion and human measure is reinterpreted lightly: the inspirations are varied and variable, from the Barbie house, the undisputed centre of infantile sexual attraction for us males from the Seventies (I’m talking about Barbie, not the house), and eighteenth-century/science-fiction robots that become elements of brand identity, to Gulliver dressed by Lilliputians who are part tailors and part builders, and Playground, published by Diorama Editions.

To my great disappointment, the Barbie theme was censored and so it has not been published.

It has instead been replaced by a fantastic feature on the Biennale, which is effectively more interesting and sophisticated.

As always, the verdict is yours.

Premetto che tutto lo studio di lighting era stato stra-simulato su diversi sistemi informatici avanzati, attraverso soluzioni tecnologicamente all’avanguardia, “mock-up” virtuali precisi al millimetro, calcoli e verifiche illuminotecniche dettagliatissime con rappresentazioni accurate di tutti valori di illuminamento e luminanza, analisi di ogni singolo pezzo di materia per prevedere riflessioni dirette ed indirette, abbagliamenti, minimi quantitativi ecc... Ciò nonostante pensare la luce artificiale e controllare la naturale per un progetto architettonico di Michele De Lucchi, di forma così complessa, composto da vetro e da arcate di legno lamellare ognuna diversa dall’altra, secondo una geometria fitomorfa-zoomorfa-geomorfa a seconda delle interpretazioni, ha generato in me e nel mio gruppo di lavoro passione, orgoglio, ma anche infinita ansia. In questo senso non vi racconto il progetto perché non ha senso e perché il cantiere procede spedito e tra poco lo vedrete realizzato, non vi spiego quali sono state le modifiche apportate alle soluzioni scelte sulla base dei test sul Mock-up ( quasi nulle per altro ) e nemmeno quali siano state le nostre considerazioni a posteriori. Vi dico soltanto che la prima accensione, pur parlando di una delle arcate più basse ed avendo a che fare con solo una piccola parte del tutto, è stata una grande emozione.

I’d like to start with the premise that the entire lighting studio was supersimulated via various examples of cutting-edge technology, virtual mockups, perfectly accurate down to the very last millimtre, incredibly detailed calculations and lighting checks featuring accurate representations of all the illuminance and luminance values, analysis of every single piece of material in order to be able to predict direct ad indirect reflection, glare, quantitative minimals etc... Despite all this, designing artificial light and controlling natural light for an architectural project by Michele De Lucchi, which was so complex, composed of glass and wood-pannelled arches, each one different from the next according to phytomorphic-zoomorphicgeomorphic geometry, and according to one’s own interpretation, generated a feeling of passion, pride both in myself and my team, as well as intense anxiety. I won’t tell you about the project in these terms because there’s no point and because the work is coming along fast and soon you’ll be able to see the finished result. Neither will I explain the modifications made to the solutions chosen based on the mock-up tests, ( hardly any actually ) nor the considerations we made later. All I will tell you is that the lighting, the first time it was switched on, even though it was one of the lower arches and it was only a small part of the whole project, was an utter thrill.

“How long is now” la frase dipinta sulla facciata dell’edificio cattura subito la mia attenzione mentre percorro la Oranienburger straße nel quartiere Mitte di Berlino. Mi sto avvicinando alla Kunsthaus Tacheles, la galleria d’arte berlinese autogestita da collettivi di artisti, simbolo della rinascita culturale della città dopo la caduta del muro.

La sensazione che provo esplorando le diverse aree è assolutamente nuova: qui vivo l’arte come esperienza totalizzante, sparisce quel distacco che ha contraddistinto la mia percezione delle opere nei luoghi finora conosciuti.

The phrase “how long is now”, painted on the façade of the building, immediately captures my attention as I walk down Oranienburger Straße in Berlin’s Mitte district. I’m on my way to the Kunsthaus Tacheles, the Berlin art gallery self-managed by artist collectives, the symbol of the city’s cultural rebirth after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The sensation I get as I explore the different areas is completely new: here I feel art as a totalizing experience. The sense of detachment that marked my perception of works in the places I’ve seen so far has vanished.

Sono trascorsi cinque anni dalla mia esperienza alla Kunsthaus Tacheles e mi domando se lo sgombero abbia messo fine al suo ricordo. Curiosando nel web scopro che un regista italiano, Stefano Casertano, ha testimoniato in un docudramma gli ultimi giorni della galleria vivendo a fianco degli artisti prima della chiusura definitiva.

Nasce così “The last days of Tacheles” che conferma il valore storico-culturale di un luogo che ha cambiato la mia visione dell’arte.

Apprendo la notizia dello sgombero della galleria.

Gli 80 artisti che attraverso le loro opere animavano questo luogo hanno deciso di non opporre resistenza e si sono limitati a intonare un’orazione funebre in onore della storica struttura, occupata dal 1990. Ora, artisti e opere d’arte dovranno cercarsi una nuova casa.

I hear that the gallery has been vacated. The eighty artists who breathed life into this place through their work decided not to oppose the decision and simply gave a eulogy to honour the historic building, occupied since 1990. Now the artists and their works must look for a new home.

La scomparsa di uno dei simboli della rinascita di Berlino è sintomo di un nuovo cambiamento: “how long is now” descriveva 20 anni fa come oggi l’incertezza del presente e del futuro della città.

The disappearance of one of the symbols of the rebirth of Berlin is the symptom of a new change: “how long is now” – twenty years ago but also today – describes the uncertainty of the city’s present and future.

Five years have passed since my experience at the Kunsthaus Tacheles and I wonder if vacating the building has put an end to its memory. Looking around on the Internet, I discover that an Italian director, Stefano Casertano, documented the gallery’s final days alongside the artists before it closed for good. Hence the docudrama titled “The Last Days of Tacheles”, confirming the historical-cultural value of a place that changed my vision of art.

Ci piace svegliarci la mattina, aprire l’armadio e non prenderci troppo sul serio.

Insomma, rispettare le regole del gioco va bene, ma fino a un certo punto. Da quando i sacri guru dello stile hanno dichiarato che nel nostro guardaroba c’è posto per tutto (ma proprio tutto-tutto-tutto), i più impazziscono pur di estremizzare anche questo dictat. Come non citare, ad esempio, le centinaia di sedicenti fashion blogger che fanno ruotare la loro giornata (e il loro guardaroba) intorno alla possibilità o meno di essere fotografate a questa o quella sfilata/inaugurazione/soirée.

Hannah Ewens ha raccontato su Vice il suo personale approccio all’ultima Settimana della Moda di Londra: un budget di 12 euro al giorno con cui acquistare un outfit, il più assurdo possibile, con l’obiettivo di essere fotografata da una blogger famosa.

Udite, udite: l’esperimento ha funzionato, almeno per lei. La cosa fa riflettere. Il problema reale si pone quando l’ironia viene svilita ad accessorio, neanche fosse alla portata di tutti, facile da indossare. L’effetto, invece, rischia di essere molto simile a quello ottenuto da chi vuole risultare simpatico a tutti i costi. Raramente funziona.

Intendiamoci, puoi pure ricoprirti di tessuto tappezzeria-della-prozia e abbinarci un bel paio di orecchie da coniglio in peluche color zaffiro, ma insomma, se proprio devi, fallo un po’, così senza pensarci, perché davvero in quel momento ti va.

We like to wake up in the morning, open the wardrobe, and not take ourselves too seriously. In other words, respecting the rules of the game is fine, but only up to a certain point. Ever since style gurus said that there’s room for everything in our closets (absolutely e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g), people have gone mad in the attempt to go to the furthest extremes. For example, how can we not mention the hundreds of would-be fashion bloggers whose days (and wardrobes) revolve around the chance to be photographed at this or that fashion show/inauguration/soirée?

On Vice Hannah Ewens talked about her personal approach to the most recent London Fashion Week: a budget of 12 euros a day to buy the most idiotic possible outfit, with the aim of being photographed as a “famous” blogger. Hear, hear! The experiment worked. At least for her it did. And that’s food for thought. The real problem arises when humour is degraded to an accessory, as if it were within everyone’s grasp and easy to wear. Instead, the effect runs the risk of approaching that of those who want everyone to like them at all cost. It rarely works.

Let’s make this clear: you can certainly cover yourself in your great-aunt’s upholstery and wear a pair of sapphire-coloured stuffed-rabbit-style earrings, but if you absolutely must, do it without overthinking, just because that’s what you feel like doing.

Non c’è niente di nuovo: quando l’assenza di regole diventa la regola perde subito la sua essenza sovversiva. A noi, invece, piacciono le persone che le regole le seguono, magari con un pizzico di estro. A noi, in fondo, piacciono le persone che se proprio devono esprimerlo ‘sto benedetto statement’, non lo fanno certo con un paio di calzini.

There’s nothing new under the sun: when the lack of rules becomes the rule, you lose the general significance of the matter. Then everything becomes pointless and you go back to square one. Instead, we like people who follow the rules, of course, but nonchalantly. In the end, we like people who, if they absolutely have to make a blessed statement, certainly don’t do it with a pair of socks.

Verso la fine degli anni ’60 la stessa ricerca si snodava anche oltreoceano, portata avanti da più creativi: primo tra tutti Richard Dattner, che nel ’69 scrisse ‘Design for Play’, un manuale illustrato che analizzava filosofia, psicologia e importanza sociale delle strutture del parco giochi. Partendo dal presupposto che nel gioco il punto focale non era un prodotto finito ma un processo dinamico, analogo quindi all’attività del designer stesso, Dattner tracciò un parallelo tra le due realtà, immaginando uno spazio creativo non standardizzato su misura per i bambini, ma per menti e corpi di qualsiasi foggia ed età. I bambini, attori chiave della realtà del parco giochi, di rado venivano direttamente coinvolti nella progettazione; per contro, gli amministratori cittadini erano estremamente partecipi nella realizzazione di strutture che non avrebbero mai usato: l’impostazione progettuale era un paradosso, qualcosa doveva cambiare.

Per coronare questa missione Dattner seguì personalmente il disegno e la realizzazione dell’’Adventure Playground’ di Central Park a New York, dal primo schizzo alla scelta dei materiali, dalla raccolta dei fondi al piano di mantenimento. Non solo rivedendo la struttura secondo principi child-oriented, ma soprattutto coinvolgendo molti designer ed architetti nell’impresa: “after generations of neglect, the public playground is suddenly in the midst of a renascence as designers, sculptors, painters and architects strive to create a new world of color, texture and form”.

In the late Sixties this research headed across the Atlantic led by a number of creative thinkers, first and foremost Richard Dattner, who in 1969 wrote Design for Play, an illustrated manual analysing the philosophy, psychology, and social importance of playground structures.

Starting with the assumption that in games the focal point was not a finished product but a dynamic process akin to what a designer does, Dattner traced a parallel between the two, picturing a non-standardized creative space tailored to children, but for the minds and bodies of any age and taste. Children – the key actors at playgrounds – were rarely involved in the design phase, but city administrators were extremely active in creating structures they would never use: the design set-up was a paradox and something had to change. To crown his mission, Dattner personally followed the design and construction of the Adventure Playground in New York’s Central Park, from the first drawing to the choice of materials and from fundraising to the maintenance plan.He not only overhauled the structure based on child-oriented principles, but above all he got numerous designers and architects involved: “after generations of neglect, the public playground is suddenly in the midst of a renascence as designers, sculptors, painters and architects strive to create a new world of color, texture and form”.

70' Contemporaneamente in Italia, Enzo Mari e Bruno Munari si interrogavano sulle stesse tematiche, elabo rando soluzioni dove il bambino ha ruolo di protagonista, ha la possibilità di dare moltep lici interpretazioni individuali, di inventare e di conoscere attraverso lo stimolo dei sensi. “Se ascolto dimentico, se vedo ricordo, se faccio capisco” ripeteva Mu nari, citando un proverbio orientale. Cr eativo poliedrico e pioniere in diverse discip line, negli anni 70 organizzò il primo di un a serie di laboratori per bambini intesi com e luoghi di creatività e conoscenza, di sperim entazione, scoperta e auto apprendimento attraverso il gioco.

Come un parco giochi all’avanguardia, il laboratorio era un luogo privilegiato del fare per capire, dove spazia re con la ginnastica mentale e costruire il sap ere.

At the same time, Enzo Ma ri and Bruno Munari examined the same aspects in Italy, coming up with solutions in which children could play a leading role and had the chance to offer multiple individual interpretation s, invent, and learn through sensory stimuli.

“If I listen I forget, if I see I remember, if I do I understand,” Munari would repeat, citing an old Asian proverb. A multisided creative figu re and a pioneer in various disciplines, Munar i was the first – in the Seventies – to organize a series of workshops for children understood as places for creativity and knowledge, experiment ation, discovery, and learning through playing.

Like an avant-garde playground, the workshop was a special place where children could do to understand, where they could move freely wit h mental gymnastics and build knowledge.

There is a hum an silhouette at a playground in Valencia: the Gul liver Kids Park, inspired by the famous figure fro m Jonathan Swift ’s stories, consists of a body of hum an features – mon umental in size – lying on the grou nd and depicted at the very momen Gulliver was ca t ptured by the Li lliputians. Excep that here they ar t e children who, as they play, seize this gargantuan body, something to be conquered like a fortress. Th e folds of Gulliv er’s body become tunnels and stairs , and his hair an d tie are slides.

This is about peop le reinventing them selves, becoming a monument and sculpture, playing with and then accessing all this, and finding their way into it.

Come in ‘SHE’, la grande istallazione site-specific presentata nel 1966 sempre al Moderna Museet di Stoccolma, frutto della collaborazione tra Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely e Claes Oldenburg. Una gigante scultura di donna, ritratta a gambe aperte, al cui interno il pubblico entrava passando proprio per la vagina. La superficie esterna è in resina: è un corpo da contorni appena accennati ma dalle masse voluminose, interamente dipinta con colori vivaci dalla Saint Phalle, mentre l'interno è stato progettato ed arredato da Tinguely e Oldenburg, alla stregua di una camera tattile.

One example is SHE, the enormous sitespecific installation presented in 1966, also at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the outcome of the collaboration of Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, and Claes Oldenburg. The gigantic sculpture of a woman, depicted with her legs open, allowed the audience to enter through her vagina. The exterior was made of resin and the body had lightly sketched outlines but voluminous masses. It was painted entirely in bold colours by Saint Phalle, while the interior was designed and furnished by Tinguely and Oldenburg, along the lines of a tactile room.

Partendo dal presupposto che l’idea di scrivere circa la Biennale di Architettura di Venezia e riguardo quella curata da Rem Koolhas in particolare, non ha generato in me alcuna ansia da prestazione o blocco dello scrittore, é superfluo dire che questo lavoro nasce dalla costrizione dei perfidi redattori di questo giornale a cui, per non perdere il lavoro ho dovuto, mio malgrado, sottostare. Perciò chiedo ammenda al magnanimo lettore che sia stato anche visitatore della suddetta Biennale qualora trovasse questo articolo poco esaustivo (2000 battute sono fatalmente troppo poche) e un po’ partigiano. In un’azione di immacolata concezione, Rem Koolhas sembra interpretare l’architettura fornendo al pubblico tutto il mondo fenomenico che la riguarda, ciò di cui chiunque ha esperienza sensibile, senza svelarci in un gesto, egoista per alcuni, munifico per altri, quello noumenico, più ricco e profondo.

The idea of writing about Venice’s International Architecture Exhibition and in particular the edition curated by Rem Koolhas, caused me neither anxiety nor writer’s block, needless to say this job was forced upon me by the wicked editors of this magazine, and as such, if I don’t want to lose my job I have to knuckle down and do as they say. Therefore, kind reader, if you have also visited the exhibition, I appeal to your generous nature if you find this article lacking (2000 characters are fatally too few ) and a tad biased. In an action of immaculate conception, Rem Koolhas appears to interpret architecture by providing the public with the whole of the external world related to it, things that everyone has sensitive experience of, without revealing too much through a gesture, selfish for some, generous for others, internal, richer and deeper.

La lettura e l’interpretazione di questa mostra pertanto non può, per definizione essere univoca, ma solo la somma di tutte le possibili interpretazioni esperibili potrà essere vicina alla realtà in sé a cui forse punta Koolhas. Un lavoro di punti di vista in cui tutte le interpretazioni sono egualmente importanti, forse una Biennale democratica e un po’ fuori moda.

La ricerca che il curatore coordina insieme agli studenti della Harvard University Graduate School of Design, rafforza questa idea di democrazia. L’esito è una raccolta di possibili risposte e soluzioni, un panorama variegato e non esaustivo di immagini come una radiografia scomposta. Elements of Architecture è il mondo delle mutevoli apparenze che ci circondano e a cui attingiamo con le nostre menti, in cui tutti si ritrovano senza individuarne però le Forme immutabili. Consequently, the reading and interpretation of this exhibition cannot, by definition, be unique, only the combination of all the possible interpretations worth attempting can be close to reality itself, which is possibly what Koolhas is driving at.

An exploration of points of view in which all the interpretations are equally important, a democratic Biennale, a touch out-dated possibly. Research co-ordinated by the curator alongside students from the Harvard university graduate school of design, reinforces this idea of democracy, the result is a collection of possible answers and solutions, a varied but not exhaustive panorama of images rather like a fragmented x-ray. Elements of Architecture is the world of the mutating appearances which surround us and which we tap into with our minds, which we all identify with but don’t actually identify the unchanging shapes.

It’s an open- source dictionary where every user can add meanings and significance according to their idea of what architecture is: “a strange mixture of obstinate persistence and constant flux.”

Con assoluto rispetto esprimo il nostro doveroso punto vista, nel suo essere così democratica questa Biennale pecca forse a volte di populismo, attraversando con superficialità alcuni temi e tralasciandone altri. Nell’esplorazione di Elements, geniale fulcro della mostra, vengono proposti appunto i fondamentali dell’Architettura, porte, finestre, corridoi, bagni e balconi etc. ma non troviamo, con grande stupore e dispiacere: la luce, tema architettonico fondamentale per definizione e a noi estremamente caro! Pertanto qualora Rem Koolhas intendesse sviluppare un’appendice alla mostra dedicata a questo, ritenga valida la candidatura di C14 ad una proficua collaborazione.

Elena Barberini With the utmost respect I express our right and proper point of view, in its democratic approach, perhaps the Biennale is guilty of populism, treating certain topics somewhat superficially and glossing over others entirely. When exploring Elements, we come across the genius focus of the exhibition, the essential foundations of Architecture; doors, windows, hallways, bathrooms and balconies etc, but what we don’t find, to our amazement and dismay, is artificial illumination, an architectural subject which is essential by definition and very close to our hearts! In the meantime, should Rem Koolhas wish to develop an appendix to the exhibition devoted to this area, we would ask him to consider C14 as a worthy candidate.

i dice che anticamente a Venezia i mercanti collocassero i banchi di mescita all’ombra del campanile di San Marco per tenere fresco il vino.

E’ da qui che prende il nome lo spuntino di mezza mattinata in laguna, e più semplicemente il classico bicchiere di vino, che appunto chiamano “ombra”. Vi suggeriamo di degustarla al Paradiso Perduto, dopo aver bazzicato gli altri luoghi che a noi hanno “raccontato qualcosa”, e nei quali sicuramente torneremo.

They say that in ancient times Venetian merchants would set up their wine stalls in the shade of the Campanile of St Mark to keep their wine cool.

This gave the name to the midmorning lagoon-side snack and, more simply, a glass of wine, which Venetians call “ombra”: shadow. After going to other places that “spoke to us” – and where we will unquestionably return – we suggest Il Paradiso Perduto.

Nella progettazione di una vetrina uno degli aspetti sostanziali e di maggiore impatto è senza dubbio il manichino.

La tecnologia 3D, i nuovi metodi di stampa industriale e l’abilità degli “scultori” hanno perfezionato nel tempo la sua utilità e rivoluzionato gli approcci costruttivi e realizzativi, soprattutto se si pensa alle sue origini: il Manneken, letteralmente “piccolo uomo” in lingua olandese, aveva le fattezze di una bambola di circa cinquanta centimetri, ed era utilizzato dalle sarte per creare copie ridotte delle loro creazioni, da inviare alle corte delle ricche famiglie dell’epoca per permettere alle nobildonne di selezionare e valutare il loro abito.

In the design of a store window, one of the most crucial aspects and the one which provides the most impact is, without a shadow of a doubt, the mannequin Over time, 3D technology, new industrial printing methods and the ability of “sculptors” have perfected their usefulness and revolutionised approaches to construction and creation, particularly if we consider its origins: the Manneken, literally a “small man” in Dutch, looked like a doll, it measured 50 centimetres and was used by seamstresses to create smaller copies of their designs to send to the courts of rich families of the time so that the noble ladies could view and choose their garments.

19 Consci di questo virtuoso passato, almeno quanto del progresso tecnologico presente, abbiamo immaginato un manichino dotato di vita propria, con un’ idea di movimento simile a quella di un mimo che, per quanto immobile, trasmetta una sensazione di staticità più per scelta che per natura. Una sorta di burattino raffinato e malinconico (quello dei tempi antichi, delle vecchie botteghe sartoriali) con sembianze moderne, simile al droide servizievole che ritroviamo in moltissimi film di fantascienza (“Io robot” in assoluto, ma perché no, anche il droide protocollare D3BO della trilogia di Star Wars, commesso ideale per qualsiasi store manager).

Così, partendo da un corpo umano abbiamo posizionato i punti di rotazione necessari e rimodellato la struttura corporea.

Sono state mantenute le parti necessarie a far risaltare e sostenere i capi di abbigliamento e scavate, assottigliate se non asportate quelle inutili.

Il movimento di un manichino è una possibilità ulteriore da offrire a chi effettivamente lo utilizzerà: il visual merchandiser.

L’esperienza maturata negli anni in questo particolare ambito ci ha subito portato ad ipotizzare una soluzione che permettesse infinite posizioni, senza dover ricorrere a set di arti e busti prestampati in diverse posizioni.

Il segreto alla base della “vita propria” della nostra creatura risiede in un giunto sferico capace, tramite rotazioni simultanee, di posizionare gli arti simulando qualsiasi situazione di vita quotidiana.

Il risultato finale è stato quello di un manichino esile e delicato, ma allo stesso tempo resistente (lo scheletro metallico lo rende stabile e incurante dei possibili urti a cui può andare incontro) e con evidenti sembianze umane.

Whilst keeping this virtuous history in mind, just as much as present technological progress, we imagined a mannequin with a life of its own, with an idea of movement similar to that of a mime artist, who as mobile as he is expresses a sense of immobility, deliberately rather than naturally. A kind of refined, melancholy puppet (the old-fashioned sort, from an old tailor’s workshop) with modern features, like one of those droid servants that always turn up in science fiction films (“I, Robot” first and foremost, but why not? Also C3PO in the Star Wars trilogy, the ideal sales assistant for any store manager).

So, we used the human body as a starting point and positioned the necessary rotation points and remodelled the body structure.

We retained the parts needed to support clothing and hollowed out, thinned or even completely removed the parts which served no purpose.

The movement of a mannequin is another option to offer to those people who actually use it: visual merchandisers. Experience gained over the years in this particular environment immediately led us to imagine a solution which affords an infinite number of positions and cuts out the need for sets of limbs and torsos in pre-moulded positions.

The secret behind our creature’s “life of its own” can be found in the ball joint which, by means of simulataneous totations, can simulate any situation in daily life.

The end result is a slight, delicate mannequin, but at the same time tough and hard-wearing (the metallic skeleton gives it stability and renders it shock-proof) with obvious human features.

Concept / Preliminary Sketch

Ci sono momenti nei quali un’idea ti coinvolge a tal punto da pensare, con un pizzico di arroganza, di poter sovvertire la storia e defraudare l’immaginario collettivo di una delle rappresentazioni visive più potenti e riconoscibili degli ultimi 350 anni. Il progetto che abbiamo ideato con così grande entusiasmo per il brand Canali, ha infatti aperto un varco nella memoria di ciascuno di noi e ha solleticato quell’immaginazione quasi infantile, pura nella sua semplicità quanto profonda nella sua visione, che tutti in qualche modo custodiamo nel nostro inconscio. La costruzione di un abito, tema ormai abusato nelle accezioni anglosassoni di bespoke o taylor-made, diventate ormai una moda più del concetto stesso di fashion, diventa originale (nel senso letterale del termine) se il soggetto in questione è uno dei marchi italiani del lusso più apprezzati, credibili e riconosciuti a livello internazionale. L’abito di Canali, e la cosa badate bene non è per nulla banale, richiede la completa padronanza e conoscenza della più importante tradizione sartoriale di sempre, una quantità di ore di lavoro incalcolabili, la passione di chi ancora crede nella qualità ed il gusto di gestire questi ingredienti senza ridicolizzarli, per farli appartenere il più possibile al nostro tempo. Quindi Gulliver, il personaggio ideato da Swift nel lontano 1700, e la sua immagine raccontata da numerose illustrazioni, legato e accerchiato dai minuscoli abitanti di Lilliput, è diventato per noi l’emblema di questa magnificenza per creare un’ istallazione all’interno della vetrina del brand. Abbiamo ridefinito il ruolo dei Lillipuziani, rappresentati da silhouettes elegantemente dorate, che vediamo in questo caso dediti a ricoprire tutti i ruoli sartoriali tradizionali.

Da probabili difensori della patria a sostenitori di uno stile e di un metodo preciso, i Lillipuziani si muovono all’interno di un’impalcatura di oro e vetro che circonda l’abito, tirano fili e spostano rocchetti, utilizzano forbici dai riflessi scintillanti e allestiscono candidi colletti.

La magia evocativa di questa installazione, che prende nella fantasia letteraria il suo seme, si inserisce perfettamente nella realtà visiva del nostro tempo. In fondo, come Installation / Details scrisse Freud, i sogni cedono il posto alle impressioni di un nuovo giorno come lo splendore delle stelle cede alla luce del sole.

There are times when an idea absorbs you so much that, with a touch of arrogance, you think you can overturn history and purloin one of the most powerful and recognizable images of the past 350 years. The project we devised so enthusiastically for the Canali brand has made inroads in everyone’s memory and inspired an almost childlike imagination – as pure in its simplicity as it is deep in its vision – that all of us have in our subconscious, one way or another. The construction of a suit, a topic that has been misused thanks to terms like “bespoke” and “tailor-made”, now more in vogue than the very concept of fashion, becomes original (in the literal sense of the term) if the subject in question is one of the most respected, credible, and internationally recognized Italian luxury brands. A Canali suit – and that’s no trifling matter – requires complete mastery and knowledge of the most important sartorial tradition of all time, an incalculable number of hours, the passion of those who still believe in quality, and the good taste to manage these ingredients without making them laughable but bringing them into our era. Therefore, Gulliver, the character invented by Swift back in the eighteenth century, and his image recounted by numerous illustrations, tied up and surrounded by the little denizens of Lilliput, have become an emblem of this magnificence to create an installation in the brand’s showcase. We redefined the role of the Lilliputians, represented by elegantly gilded silhouettes, which here we see devoted to covering all the traditional tailoring roles.From likely defenders of their homeland to supporters of a style and specific method, the Lilliputians move inside a gilt-and-glass framework surrounding the garment, pulling threads and moving spools, using gleaming scissors, and setting up snow-white collars.

Installation / Window Display

The magic evoked by the installation, inspired by this literary fantasy, is perfectly part of the visual reality of our time. After all, as Freud wrote, dreams give way to the impressions of a new day just as the splendour of stars gives way to sunlight.

Opening curtains to let in new light and blowing off the dust to rediscover the scents and flavours of yore: the inspiration behind the Locanda Chiaravalle was to revive a tired old tavern at the gates of Milan, but without forgetting its origins.

Nel nuovo ristorante, infatti, c’è sempre un tavolo riservato al fantasma della vecchia locanda che si aggira tra i tavoli, sfiorando appena le originali piastrelle a scacchi. Si scalda ancora al fuoco dell’antico camino e, quando alza il naso all’insù, può ancora ammirare le sue vecchie travi, restaurate e ridipinte.

The new restaurant has even kept a table reserved for the old inn’s ghost, who wanders amid the tables, running his fingers over the original checkerboard wall tiles.

He still warms his hands by the fire of the old hearth, and when he stands up – nose in the air – he can still admire the old beamed ceiling, which has been restored and repainted.

Il fantasma di Chiaravalle però da oggi vede tutto con una luce diversa. Sarà forse per l’illuminazione moderna, non invasiva o per i nuovi tavolini in ferro e legno su disegno, o ancora per le sedie e gli arredi vintage, recuperati nelle botteghe artigiane e nei mercati della zona; sarà anche per le sospensioni di Tom Dixon che inquadrano il moderno bancone in cemento e ceramica. Tutto insomma è stato ripensato e ridisegnato considerando la storia di questo luogo, tanto che, spesso a fine serata, il fantasma di Chiaravalle si siede al banco a sorseggiare, come sempre, il suo whiskey preferito.

Elisa Arini But now the ghost of Chiaravalle sees everything differently. It might be the low-key modern lighting or perhaps the new custom-made tables in iron and wood, or maybe the vintage chairs and furnishings, retrieved from local artisans and street markets, but it might also be Tom Dixon’s suspensions framing the modern counter in cement and ceramic. In short, everything has been rethought and redesigned based on the place’s history. In fact, at the end of the evening you’ll often find the ghost of Chiaravalle sitting at the counter sipping his favourite whiskey, just as he did in the old days.
