Tematica a sorpresa, difficilissima da affrontare ma oramai decisamente inevitabile.

Le infinite ed innumerevoli domande che continuiamo a ricevere dai nostri followers ci hanno portato a parlare un po’ più di noi, svelando e raccontando molti dei retroscena,

che abbiamo tenuto nascosti per 10 anni non tutti ovviamente, perché vi chiamiate così? Cosa c.... c’entrano i cervi? Di cosa vi occupate realmente? è tutta una copertura vero? Qual è l’origine del tuo cognome? etc. Ad una simile e reiterata serie di richieste avvenute a furor di popolo non si poteva non rispondere, bisognava far chiarezza una volta per tutte (forse) mantenendo comunque il nostro stile e la

nostra ironia di sempre. Non ho alcuna intenzione di aggiungere altro perché nelle pagine successive troverete molto. In questo caso è proprio inutile anticipare, anche se vi confesso che il normale processo di autocritica all’interno dello studio appena prima della stampa ha assunto proporzioni cosmiche. In pratica, nessuno è soddisfatto. Il mio commento è scontato: molto meglio così, altrimenti significherebbe che tutto quello che mi aspetto dai miei collaboratori e tutto quello che hanno già fatto e realizzato in questi anni sarebbe iscrivibile all’interno di uno stile di lavoro sterile ed autoreferenziale, quindi, sbagliato per definizione.

Dal 2008 Gruppo C14 estende il proprio raggio d’azione progettando interni, retail e luce in diverse aree del mondo, con particolare riferimento alle case di moda internazionali e con commesse che hanno permesso allo studio di esprimersi non solo sul territorio europeo, ma anche su quello asiatico ed americano. Tutti i membri dello studio imparano rapidamente la traduzione, in 7 diverse lingue tra cui il russo ed il cinese, di diversi aneddoti settecenteschi sulla contrapposizione tra il modello corpuscolare newtoniano e quello a onde di Huygens, per poi a breve perdersi in discussioni inutili sull’estetica dei quanti.

A 8 anni Alexander Bellman Jr. si pone le prime scottanti domande di ogni bambino della sua età: come la teoria corpuscolare possa realmente descrivere la natura della luce e come si possa ipotizzare una matematica della percezione. Ne discute a lungo con il padre, il quale però non lo convince affatto e, a tradimento, cerca di spiegargli il concetto di dualismo onda-particella.

Da quel momento il piccolo Alexander, 172 cm all’epoca, capisce che avrebbe cercato le sue risposte altrove, nell’estetica delle forme e nell’architettura, per poi occuparsi di fisica della luce in un secondo momento. Purtroppo il Politecnico di Milano respinge la sua tempestiva domanda di iscrizione, nonostante i test più che incoraggianti e Alexander si ritrova quindi costretto a frequentare, non senza un certo disappunto, gli ormai inevitabili canonici 10 anni di scuole tradizionali. A questi aggiunge qualche anno di autoimposto assenteismo, non solo per ritorsione verso il torto subito anni prima, ma anche per due incontrollabili manie dell’età giovanile : le partite di Basket al parco Sempione e praticare il gioco degli scacchi.

Lo Studio Bellman, fondato nel 1998, si distingue da subito per l’utilizzo di innovativi software di calcolo e modellazione, all’avanguardia sia in campo architettonico ma soprattutto in illuminotecnica.

Bellman sta realmente cercando le risposte alle sue antiche domande, manovrando, decifrando e scrivendo codici informatici.

Il progetto di illuminazione del Duomo di Milano, tutt’ora in essere, ne certifica il suo impegno.

Lo sviluppo tecnologico e l’evolversi dei nuovi sistemi di comunicazione suggeriscono l’idea di una realtà eterogenea e competitiva su più fronti.

Nasce così Gruppo C14, che continuerà comunque ad indagare, naturalmente, sulla natura della luce. di Simone Russo

Teoria 0 Nell’ormai irreperibile diario di bordo del Capitano Kirk, data astrale non la so ed è sempre stata comunque una fesseria ma stimo che sulla terra fosse il 1979, si racconta di una prodigiosa lotta tra il misterioso V’ger ( l’ ex sonda NASA Voyager I, evoluta e trasformata da una civiltà di macchine in essere pensante e potentissimo ) e le “unità a base carbonio che infestano la USS Enterprise”. “Unità a base carbonio ?” chiede il signor Perez, una predestinata vittima sacrificata di lì a breve ai fini dello spettacolo, “sì” risponde il capitano Kirk, che nei video dell’epoca appare ingloriosamente sovrappeso e leggermente alticcio, “gli esseri umani”. V’ger in quanto insieme di transistor è estremamente silicico ed assolutamente ossessionato dalla ricerca del suo creatore, che per la fortuna stellare che accompagna Kirk in tutte le sue imprese, scambia per il capitano stesso. Rimane comunque il fatto che la presenza del carbonio da allora è diventata per me identificativa dell’organicità di un essere e, per associazione casuale di idee, elemento chimico indispensabile alla vita ed alla creazione originale. Ora il C14 nello specifico è un isotopo radioattivo, 6 protoni e 8 neutroni, presente praticamente ovunque in natura anche se in percentuale molto relativa, una parte su mille miliardi rispetto al resto del carbonio sulla terra e viene generato dall’interazione tra i raggi cosmici e l’azoto gassoso nella troposfera e nella stratosfera. Inoltre è universalmente conosciuto per la sua capacità di decrescere “velocemente” nel tempo nella materia organica morta, una volta interrotto il ciclo rigenerativo ( tempo di dimezzamento di soli 5700 anni ) e permette quindi il famoso esame omonimo che si utilizza per la datazione radiometrica di campioni organici, ad esempio fossili o reperti archeologici in legno. Queste peculiari caratteristiche di onnipresenza e di riconoscibilità nel tempo, mi hanno fatto pensare in anticipo a quelle che avrei voluto fossero le connotazioni principali del mio studio: la multidisciplinarità, l’originalità ed una elevata conoscenza tecnica. Ora però, anche se ai più potrebbero risultare almeno in parte giustificate le motivazioni “organiche” sulla scelta del nome, perché un ecosistema essenziale composto da un cervo e un albero come simboli di creatività e progetto dispersi su un asteroide? E qui la questione diventa interessante, ed in un certo senso filosofica/scientifica, visto che l’ispirazione è nata riadattando Gödel ai miei fini personali ed opponendomi decisamente alle teorie assolutistiche del vulcaniano Spock. Il cervo rappresenta la ricerca creativa e l’inventiva attraverso un processo “razionale inconscio ed istintivo”, una sorta di consapevolezza infantile dell’incertezza quantistica: “ ...la ragione che inventa senza che l’ego comprenda come...”. In pratica un occhio interiore molto presente nei primi anni di vita e molto più difficile da ritrovare in età adulta perché oscurato dalla coscienza stessa. L’albero, che converte la CO2 in ossigeno e sostanze nutritive solo quando esposto alla luce, è per me il modello di una creatività da sempre misteriosa, di un ciclo rigenerativo che permette la vita organica e racchiude in sé molti dei segreti dell’universo nei quali il carbonio svolge un ruolo fondamentale. È in un certo senso l’aspirazione di qualsiasi progetto del cervo, la sintesi percettiva di una matematica non assoluta ma al tempo stesso profondamente reale. In soldoni e banalizzando il tutto, anche perché ogni volta che ne parlo giungo a conclusioni diverse, quest’affermazione è profondamente Godeliana, i cervi siamo noi di C14 e gli alberi ciò che vorremmo creare.

Avremmo potuto parlare di innovazione citando T.A. Edison, sussurrando H.Ford, per poi urlare il genio indiscutibile di S.Jobs. E invece…

Nel 1968 un ragazzone di 21 anni alto 1 metro e novantacinque, si presenta alle olimpiadi di Città del Messico per gareggiare nella disciplina del salto in alto. La scarpa destra di colore differente dalla scarpa sinistra. Che già non è poco. Subito dopo aver staccato i piedi dal suolo, l’asta “scivola”, con grande sorpresa di tutti, sotto la schiena dell’atleta, e non sotto il ventre come si era visto sino a quel momento. Dick Fosbury, in quell’occasione, stabilisce il nuovo record mondiale. Il Fosbury Flop diventa il nuovo standard tecnico per la disciplina del salto in alto da lì ai tempi nostri. Il record di Sotomayor, miglior interprete di questa disciplina negli anni a seguire, resiste tutt’oggi. L’innovazione per noi è Dick Fosbury.

L’innovazione per noi è un atteggiamento, una tensione che non deve necessariamente essere alimentata da ricerche scientifiche, industrializzazione o studi matematici.

L’innovazione è un sentimento. Uno sguardo che cambia il punto di vista originale, per generare soluzioni mai immaginate prima.

L’innovazione è sorpresa.

Le singolarità di ciascuno, la capacità di mettere a disposizione degli altri la propria indipendenza di pensiero. Inutile nascondersi dietro il solito velo di uno scontato buonismo autoreferenziale. I nostri “brain-storming” sono battaglie degne dei rinomati duelli tra Maverick ed Iceman (mi concederete la citazione anni ’80) . Cervelli in volo come F-16 pronti a lanciare in un solo colpo la propria batteria di missili, virate, picchiate, voli radenti, tutto il repertorio del pluridecorato pilota di caccia è concesso. La cosa meravigliosa è che non ci sono radar, il carburante è infinito, non si muore mai, e soprattutto, la “guerra” la vinciamo sempre insieme.

“The imitation game” Come Alan Turing, matematico inglese che decifrò il codice tedesco “Enigma” durante la seconda guerra mondiale, analizziamo e studiamo quotidianamente i “codici” dei brief che ci vengono affidati, per realizzare progetti tridimensionali che diano forma a poche parole scritte. Brief, dall’inglese, vuol dire “breve, conciso, rapido”. Nel nostro caso specifico il termine assume l’idea di “ragguagli, istruzioni”. Comunque la si voglia intendere, e per quanto sia al centro di ogni nostra valutazione successiva, il significato di questa parola è inversamente proporzionale alle dinamiche che scatena nel nostro lavoro. Un po’ come la voglia improvvisa di gelato nel bel mezzo di un deserto.

Behind C14 This is a special issue with a surprise topic, which makes it something of a challenge, but at this point, definitely inevtable. The infinite and innumerable questions we continue to receive from our followers have led us to talk a bit about ourselves, revealing a lot of what goes on behind the scenes, not everything of course, things we have kept hidden for the past 10 years: what does the company name mean? What the hell have stags got to do with it?

What do you actually do? It’s all a front, isn’t it? What are the origins of your surname? etc. Faced with such a barrage of requests from the people, I just had to answer, it was time to clear things up once and for all ( perhaps ) whilst preserving our personal style and customary humour. I have absolutely no intention of adding anything else because you will find plenty to peruse in the following pages. There really is no point in giving you a preview, though, I must confess that the normal process of self-criticism which kicks in within the studio just before the issue goes to print has taken on cosmic proportions. In short, noone is ever completely satisfied. My reaction is obvious: all the better, otherwise that would mean that everything I expect from my team and everything they’ve done and created so far over the years would fit into a sterile, self-referential working style, therefore, utterly wrong by definition.

At the tender age of 8 Alexander Bellman Jr. asked himself the first burning questions typical of any boy at his age: how particle mathematics influences the luminous spectres which define our world and above all, how far they affect the volume of objects around them. He discussed this at length with his father, who, however, was not the least bit convincing. From that moment Bellman realised that he would have looked for answers to his questions within the complex systems of architecture, working backwards. Sadly, Milan’s University of Architecture rejected his prompt application,despite the encouraging results of his entry test, and Bellman was forced to attend the standard 10 years of traditional school, not without a certain feeling of disappointment, as well as a few years of self-imposed absenteeism as a reaction against the wrong -doing he suffered years before.

Then, finally, he was welcomed into the warm embrace of academia.

ALEXANDER BELLMAN

Studio Bellman, founded in 1998, immediately set itself apart for its use of innovative calculating and modelling software. It was cutting-edge not only in terms of architecture but particularly regarding lighting design. Bellman is actually looking for answers to his long-term questions by manoeuvring and deciphering IT codes. The lighting project for Milan Cathedral, still in use, is a testament to his commitment.

The development of technology and new communication systems lead to the idea of a uniform scenario, competitive in different areas.

This led to the creation of Gruppo C14, which still continues its investigation, into particle light, of course.

Since 2008 Gruppo c14 has extended its reach as far as interior, retail and lighting design within different parts of the world, with particular emphasis on international fashion houses, and with commissions which have allowed the studio to express its creativity not only on a European level but also as far as Asia and the US. All the members of the studio quickly learned how to say “particle light” in 7 different languages.

ORIGINS In Captain Kirk’s ship’s log, no idea what the stardate is, it’s a load of old rubbish in any case, but I reckon that it must have been 1979 on Earth, there is a story about a phenomenal battle between the mysterious V’ger ( the ex- NASA Voyager I probe, evolved and transformed from a civilisation of machines into hugely-powerful sentient beings ) and “carbon-based units which are infesting the USS Enterprise”.

“Carbon-based units ?” asks Mr Perez, a predestined victim shortly to be sacrificed for the good of the

series, “yes” replies Captain Kirk, who looks ingloriously overweight and slightly tipsy, “human beings”.

V’ger, a collection of transistors, highly silicone and utterly obsessed with the search for its creator, who thanks to the permanent lucky stars surrounding Kirk in all his endeavours, means that it thinks it is Kirk himself. The fact remains that, since that moment, I began to identify the presence of carbon with the organicity of beings and, via the random association of ideas, a chemical element which is essential for both life and original creation.

Specifically, C14 is a radioactive isotope, 6 protons and 8 neutrons, present practically everywhere within nature even though the percentage is relatively low, one part to a thousand billion compared to the rest of carbon found on Earth.

It is generated by the interaction between cosmic rays and nitrogen gas in the troposphere and stratosphere. In addition, it is universally recognised for its ability to decrease “rapidly” over time within dead organic matter, once the regenerative cycle has been interrupted ( it decays with a half-life of around 5700 years ) thus allowing the famous eponymous test to be used for radiocarbon dating organic samples, such as fossils or archaeological artifacts made of wood. These particular characteristics, namely omnipresence and identification over time, made me think about what I wanted the main connotations for my studio to be: multidisciplinarity,

originality as well as elevated technical know-how. So, you would be forgiven into thinking that the “organic” reasons behind our name are partly justifiable, why then do we have an eco-system composed of a stag and a tree as a symbol of creativity and projects on an asteroid?

And this is where it gets interesting, and in a certain way philosophical/ scientific too, given that the inspiration came from my reworking of Gödel to fit my personal ends and my emphatic rejection of that Vulcan Spock’s absolutist theories. The stag stands for creative, inventive study via a “rational unconscious and instinctive” process, a kind of childish awareness of quantum uncertainty: “ ...reason inventing without the ego understanding how...”. Basically, the inner eye which is very active in the first few years of a child’s life is much more difficult to locate in adult life as it is veiled by consciousness itself.

A tree, which converts CO2 into oxygen and nutrients only when it is exposed to daylight, has always been a mysterious creative model for me, a regenerative cycle which creates organic life and encapsulates many of the secrets of the universe in which carbon plays a crucial role. And in a certain way, what every project by the stag aspires to, the perceptive essence of mathematics, which is not absolute but is simultaneously profoundly real. In terms of money and rendering everything banal, particularly as each time I talk about it I reach a

different conclusion, this statement is deeply Godelian, the stags are us at C14 and the trees are what we strive to create.

innovation Thinking about innovation we could have quoted T.A. Edison, whispered H. Ford, or shouted the undeniable genius of S. Jobs. On the other hand… In 1968 a gangly 21-yearold kid went to the Olympics in Mexico City to compete in the highjump event. He wore shoes that didn’t match, which already says a lot. After his feet left the ground, the bar, to everyone’s amazement, “slid” underneath the athlete’s back instead of his stomach as the technique had been up to then. On

that day, Dick Fosbury, set a new world record. The Fosbury Flop became the new standard technique for the high-jump and continues to be so today. Sotomayor’s record, he was the best performer of this technique in the following years, still remains unbeaten today.

To us, innovation means Dick Fosbury. To us, innovation is an attitude, something which doesn’t necessarily have to be fuelled by scientific research, industrialisation or mathematical study. Innovation is a feeling. A perspective which changes the original point of view and generates previously unimaginable solutions. Innovation is surprise.

heterogeneity An amalgamation of all the possible expressions of diversity, united in the pursuit of a common aim. This is C14. Each person’s singularity, the ability to share one’s independent thought with others. There’s no point hiding behind a thin veil of obvious auto-referential schmaltz.

Our brain-storming sessions are like battles, more akin to the famous duels between Maverick and Iceman ( allow me just the one reference to the Eighties ). Brains in full flight like an F-16 ready to fire off its missiles, veering, diving, flying close to the ground, the whole repertoire of a highly-decorated fighter pilot. The great thing is that there’s no radar, the fuel never runs out, one never dies, and most of all we always win the “war” together.

Just like Alan Turing, the British mathematician who broke the German “Enigma” code during the Second World War, we regularly analyse and study the “codes” of briefs assigned to us for the creation of three dimensional projects which give shape to a handful of written words. “Brief” also means “short, quick or succinct”. For us the term means “information, instructions”.

Whichever way you look at it, and despite it being at the very heart of every subsequent assessment, the meaning of this word is disproportionate to the dynamics it triggers in the work we do. It’s a bit like a sudden craving for ice-cream in the middle of the desert.
