Vivir en Pedregal

Much has already been said about Baja California Sur´s beauty and history so I´m going to focus on the residential development of Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas which, thirty years ago I saw for the first time. Back then, there wasn´t much to discover. The urban zone of Cabo, so to speak, was encircled by just a few blocks of sandy streets emanating from what is now downtown. We drove around in a rented car without a predetermined destination, being guided only by the shape of the bay and the topography of the city; taking dirt roads and lanes that didn´t lead anywhere. Off the main boulevard we found a small street that ended at a plaza that was surprisingly decorated with buildings exhibiting stone arches topped with roof tiles, and surrounded by big, leafy Tabachin trees and colorful bougainvilleas. Plaza Cabo San Lucas (the name I learned later) represented urban order in the middle of a disordered urban territory: a small and peaceful oasis.
De la belleza e historia de Baja California Sur se ha hablado mucho, así que me enfocaré en el fraccionamiento Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas que conocí de casualidad hace 30 años. No había entonces mucha ciudad por descubrir. La zona urbana de Cabo, por así decirlo, se circunscribía a unas pocas manzanas de lo que ahora es el centro. Recorrimos esas calles en un coche rentado sin un destino predeterminado, guiándonos solamente por la forma de la bahía y la topografía de la ciudad, adentrándonos en caminos de tierra y callejuelas que no llevaban a ninguna parte. Por el boulevard principal encontramos una pequeña calle que desembocaba en una plaza sorprendente decorada con arcadas de piedra en los edificios bajos y rematados con teja, adornados con grandes y frondosos tabachines y coloridas buganvilias; la Plaza San Lucas (cuyo nombre después aprendí) representaba un orden urbano en medio de un territorio urbano desordenado: un pequeño y apacible oasis.
After walking around the plaza we entered Pedregal, and wandered around its rocky roads. The houses had various views. Some faced the bay, and others the mountain or the Pacific Ocean. The communion of desert and sea represented, to me, as an architect who has done the bulk of his work in Mexico City – an unexplored territory full of possibilities for establishing a new relationship between architecture and a combined arid and sea environment.
Después de recorrer la plaza nos adentramos en Pedregal, cuyos caminos empedrados recorrimos. Había unas cuantas casas, todas con vistas a la bahía, a la montaña y el Pacífico. La comunión del desierto y el mar representaban para mí —un arquitecto que había construido la mayor parte de su obra en la ciudad de México— un territorio inexplorado y lleno de posibilidades de una nueva relación entre la arquitectura, el entorno desértico y el mar.
I promised myself then that if I ever had the chance to live in Cabo San Lucas I would do it here, in Pedregal.
Me prometí entonces que si algún día tuviera la suerte de vivir en Cabo San Lucas lo haría aquí, en Pedregal.
