BEYOND THE RUNWAY: A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE, FAMILY, AND REINVENTION Interview with Alexandra Kreines by Yolanda Ayala Rodela How did you and Dr. Kreines meet?

My husband and I met through Bumble, which always makes us chuckle. We share the same name, and our birthdays are just a day apart. From the moment we met, we both felt something special and quickly knew we wanted to build a life together.

Our engagement was simple and intimate, with just our families at home, yet it was deeply meaningful.

Our story was featured in various media outlets and bridal magazines because people loved that we turned a dating-app connection into a marriage rooted in love, friendship, and a deep soul connection. What began with a swipe became the love story of a lifetime.

Can you describe your wedding?

Our wedding was everything I had ever envisioned and more. It was an elegant allwhite winter celebration that honored both of our cultures. Despite the challenges posed by COVID, everything came together beautifully.

We held a Catholic ceremony at San Fernando Cathedral, followed by a Persian ceremony and reception at the Tobin Center. From the floral arrangements and entertainment to the camels, it was truly unforgettable. And for anyone wondering, my ceremony gown weighed nearly as much as a small child, and its train was so long I'm fairly certain it rivaled the height of Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Fun fact: the CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, Tim Morrow, helped us find our camel friends!

We recently celebrated our fourth anniversary, and it feels like just yesterday we said, "I do."

While the wedding itself was a beautiful day, the marriage we've built since then has been the true blessing. Each year deepens our appreciation for one another, and watching our love grow through life's seasons, becoming parents, building a family, and supporting each other's dreams has been far more meaningful than any celebration or headline could ever tell.

Do you have a family morning routine with your dogs?

Our mornings kick off early with getting our three-year-old son, Luka, ready for school. At the same time, we're managing our six dogs, including our bulldogs, pug, and Rottweiler, which can feel less like pet ownership and more like running a small zoo. At least one of the 6 joins for a car ride to school!

Can you tell me about your Halt the Hate foundation?

Halt the Hate was founded to raise awareness about adult bullying—an issue many people overlook because bullying is often associated only with childhood. It affects adults every day in workplaces, families, social circles, online spaces, and even personal relationships. In our digital age, online harassment and public shaming have made targeting others easier than ever. Through my own experiences and witnessing the struggles of others, I saw how isolating and damaging harassment can be. Too often, people are told to ignore it or stay silent, yet the emotional, psychological, and even physical effects can be lasting. Halt the Hate works to raise awareness, advocate for stronger protections, promote mental health resources, and encourage safer

online environments. Our mission is to ensure that those experiencing bullying have access to support, resources, and a community that reminds them they are not alone. We also encourage bystanders to speak up, because change happens when victims feel supported, and others find the courage to act.

What guiding principle do you live by?

One quote I often reflect on is: "Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching."

How do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy creative projects and organizing events, especially my son's birthday parties. From the theme and décor to the centerpieces, I design everything myself—so much so that I have an entire storage unit dedicated to event supplies.

For my son's third birthday, guests joked that it felt like they had stepped into Disney World. My husband laughs because my projects often turn into late nights—sometimes until 4 a.m.—while I transform our garage into a theater or handcraft decorations.

I'm very hands-on and can often be found at the hardware store picking up supplies or tackling home projects. My husband, a surgeon, fixes people, while I build and repair things at home. Maybe one day, when life slows down, I'll turn my love of event planning into a business.

VISION OF CORONA DEL SUR An Interview with Nikolas Schlosser, President of Trinary Development

By Yolanda Ayala Rodela Nikolas, where did the name “Corona del Sur” come from?

The name actually starts with our company, Trinary Development. I’ve always believed names should carry meaning. Trinary subtly reflects the idea of the Trinity, and as I grew closer to our Heavenly Father over the years, I wanted our projects to reflect lessons that shaped me personally.

“Corona del Sur” translates to “Crown of the South.” The inspiration came from a personal moment with my daughter. We had bought a crown for her coronation, and the moment we got into the car she immediately wanted to wear it. I handed it to her, but she struggled with it, tugged at her hair, and started crying. I remember telling her, “I want you to wear this crown just as much—maybe even more—but you have to wait. You’re not ready yet.”

That moment stayed with me because it reflected something much deeper. God gives all of us purpose, ambition, and vision for a reason. But before we can carry the crown, we have to be refined into the kind of people capable of wearing it well. Corona del Sur represents that idea. It’s about growth, stewardship, responsibility, and becoming worthy of what you’ve been called to build.

Tell us more about the products and experiences inside Corona del Sur. Corona del Sur was designed to be more than housing. We wanted to create a true lifestyle district centered around connection, culture, and long-term community value.

The project includes approximately 3,000 residential units with a mix of multifamily housing, build-to-rent townhomes, and assisted living. It also includes more than 600,000 square feet of commercial space designed for retail, restaurants, hospitality, and neighborhood services.

What makes the project unique is how everything integrates around the creek system and trail network. We’re designing a walkable greenway community anchored by a creekside amphitheater, public gathering spaces, trails, sports facilities, and street-oriented retail.

There’s an intentional focus on experiences. You can live here, walk to dinner, attend a concert, ride the trails, or spend the afternoon at the athletic complex without leaving the community.

The goal is to create an environment that feels alive and connected instead of isolated and cardependent.

How does Corona del Sur tie into what makes San Antonio special?

San Antonio has one of the strongest cultural identities in the country. The city is built around history, gathering places, family, and connection to nature through its creek systems and public spaces.

We wanted Corona del Sur to feel authentically tied to that identity rather than importing a generic master-planned concept. The project sits near Rosillo Creek and connects into San Antonio’s 180mile greenway trail system. That natural infrastructure became central to the vision.

The South Side is also entering a major growth cycle. There are billions of dollars in surrounding public and private investment happening around Brooks, Condalia, the Arboretum, and other major developments nearby. We believe this area will become one of the most important longterm growth corridors in Texas.

But growth alone isn’t enough. The challenge is creating places with identity and permanence.

Corona del Sur is designed to feel rooted in San Antonio’s culture while still pushing the city forward architecturally and economically.

What impact do you hope Corona del Sur has on the community and the South Side?

I believe the South Side deserves transformational investment, not just expansion. Too often communities grow without receiving the quality infrastructure, gathering spaces, or long-term planning that create lasting value.

Our vision is to help create economic opportunity while also building pride of place. That means jobs, housing options, retail, recreation, entertainment, and public spaces designed for families and future generations.

The amphitheater, trails, sports complex, and walkable commercial areas are intended to become regional destinations, not just amenities for residents.

Ultimately, I want Corona del Sur to represent what disciplined, thoughtful development can look like when it’s driven by stewardship instead of short-term extraction. If we do this correctly, the impact will extend far beyond the property lines.

BUILT FOR FAMILY

By Yolanda Ayala Rodela Were you born in San Antonio?

Absolutely! I was born and raised here, and I truly cherish the vibrant culture and the strong bonds of family and friendship that I’ve developed over the years.

Observing the influx of families relocating from various cities and states to San Antonio, I realized that this is the perfect place for me to establish my own family.

Can you share a bit about your childhood?

I grew up with three siblings: Jennifer, Oscar, and Jason. My parents both had previous marriages before finding each other, with my mom having two kids, Jennifer and Oscar, from her first marriage. Jason and I are fraternal twins, born just 27 minutes apart. Having a twin sibling made my childhood exciting and full of adventures, as we always had each other to share experiences with.

What fuels your purpose in life?

My family is my driving force and my inspiration. I strive to create a life that makes them proud and demonstrate that with hard work, dedication, and discipline, we can achieve extraordinary things. Additionally, I’m motivated by the desire to create growth opportunities for others. When we launched JLA, several close colleagues decided to join us, which fueled my ambition and resilience. The fear of letting my family and team down pushed me to work harder than ever, and I remain steadfast in my pursuit of success.

How did you meet your wife?

Tell me about your children.

We were introduced by my brother’s girlfriend, Megan, back in 2009. For me, it was love at first sight, but for her, it took some time. I pursued her for two years before we finally started dating. We tied the knot in 2012, and our family welcomed our first child, Nicholas, in 2013. Three years later, we celebrated the arrival of our second child, Juliette.

Nicholas and Juliette are both unique and wonderful in their own ways, and we couldn’t be prouder of who they are becoming. Nick is a quick learner and fiercely independent—he rode his bike without training wheels on his first attempt and has a knack for problem-solving. He’s kind-hearted and has a special love for animals, especially our dog, Hazel. Juliette is creative, caring, and full of affection. She excels in school, enjoys drawing and painting, and recently earned her blue-white belt in taekwondo. One of the things I adore about her is her thoughtful nature; she prefers to make handmade cards and letters for loved ones instead of buying gifts.

Both of them are loving, considerate, and bring so much joy to our family every day.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

One humorous yet powerful quote that I often remind myself of when I feel stuck is, “It’s hard to soar like an eagle when you’re surrounded by turkeys.” This reminds me to seek out ambitious individuals who have big dreams and aspirations.

What inspires you on a daily basis?

I find inspiration in the progress of our company and team, both personally and professionally.

I love learning and empowering others to improve each day. The camaraderie among our team also inspires me, as it reassures me that the culture we’re cultivating is positively impacting lives.

Do you work with your spouse?

Yes, we have been partners in business since we started JLA. With both of us unfamiliar with running a business, we quickly sought guidance from mentors. Robert (Bob) Alton has been an invaluable resource since our journey began, helping to keep me grounded and providing Stephanie with the expertise necessary to navigate our rapid growth. Stephanie and I have different approaches to business; she tends to be more cautious, while I’m always looking for the next big challenge. Once we recognized our differing mindsets, she decided to focus on our new venture, Stay Golden Properties, while still assisting JLA with marketing.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

Surprisingly, I was quite shy as a child and preferred to stay out of the spotlight, which made me come across as introverted. Now, however, I can’t seem to stop talking! I enjoy making people laugh and creating lasting memories, and I love meeting new individuals and hearing their stories.

Design, Discipline, and Development: Inside Gallium Group’s Vision for Real Estate Andrew, could you share a bit about yourself?

I am a licensed architect in Texas, a real estate developer, husband, and father. My background is rooted in architecture and real estate development. Jenny and I are both graduates of Texas A&M University, where I earned a Master of Architecture and we each earned a Master of Land and Property Development.

That combination shapes how we approach each project: with a balance of design thinking, development discipline, and practical decision making.

Are you originally from San Antonio? We’d love to hear about your journey. How did everything begin for you, and what’s the story behind

How you met your wife?

San Antonio is home for us, and it has shaped who we are personally and professionally. Jenny and I met in high school and were married at 21. In many ways, everything we have built in life, we have built together.

My journey began in architecture, but over time I became increasingly drawn to development because I saw how important it is to connect design with real world execution. Strong projects need more than a good concept. They need vision, discipline, financial awareness, trust, and a clear process.

Gallium Group is the next step in the journey Jenny and I have been on for many years. It is part of the life we have been building side by side through family, faith, school, work, and now business ownership.

How long have you been running your business, and what motivates both of you to strive for success in life?

Gallium Group is the next chapter in work that has been building for nearly two decades. My background includes architecture, construction, and development, with experience on more than 2,000 apartment units and roughly $580 million in real estate development across Texas and Florida.

What motivates Jenny and me is our family, our faith, and the desire to build a life rooted in love, purpose, and service. Success, to us, is not only financial. It is measured by the strength of our relationships, the integrity of our work, and whether we leave people and places better than we found them.

Gallium Group focuses on fee development for landowners and investors who want to develop real estate without building an in-house development team. We help guide projects from early idea to execution by managing design, aligning financial goals, coordinating the right team, and mitigating risk through each stage of development.

The value of a fee developer is clarity and accountability. Real estate projects are complex, and early decisions can carry major financial consequences. Our role is to help owners understand the risks, organize the right team, and keep the project moving forward.

Now that you're embarking on this new venture of owning your own business, how is that experience going for you?

Owning our own business has been exciting, challenging, and humbling. There is a lot of responsibility in building something from the ground up, but there is also a deep sense of purpose in it.

Gallium Group gives us the opportunity to bring together what we value most: thoughtful design,

disciplined development, honest communication, and practical guidance. We want our clients to feel like they have someone helping them see the full picture, not just one piece of the project.

What’s it like collaborating with your wife?

Collaborating with Jenny is one of the most rewarding parts of this chapter. Because we have known each other since high school and have built our life together, there is a deep level of trust between us.

We balance each other well. I tend to focus on project strategy, design, risk, execution, and the development process. Jenny brings warmth, perspective, intuition, and a people centered perspective that makes the business stronger. She understands how people connect with a place, a brand, and a story.

When you’re not working, what activities do you both enjoy?

When we are not working, Jenny and I enjoy spending time together, connecting with family, exploring San Antonio, going out for coffee or dinner, traveling when we can, and making space for the people we love.

What advice would you offer to others in your industry?

My advice is to stay ethical, stay curious, and learn the full picture. Design matters, but so do numbers, schedules, financing, permitting, construction realities, operations, and relationships.

Real estate is ultimately a people business. Trust, honesty, and accountability matter.

Do you have a mentor who has influenced you?

We have been fortunate to learn from many mentors throughout our careers and lives. Some were formal mentors, and others were clients, developers or colleagues who challenged us to think better, work harder, and take responsibility for the outcome.

Lastly, what do you feel is your life’s purpose?

I believe our life’s purpose is to love well, serve others, keep growing, and use whatever talents we have to help people move forward.

For us, architecture and development are part of that purpose. They allow us to help shape places, support families, guide clients, and create value in a way that is both practical and meaningful.

At the center of it all is our family, my relationship with Jenny, and the desire to build a life that reflects love, integrity, and service.

FROM THE BORDER TO THE BOARDROOM

By Yolanda Ayala Rodela Can you share a bit about yourself?

I’m Blanca Abbud, though many people in my industry know me as “The PEO Lady”, a nickname I’ve come to love because it captures what I’m passionate about.

As Vice President of Sales at Engage PEO, I get to do what energizes me most: helping business owners cut through the complexity of HR, payroll, benefits, and risk management so they can get back to what they do best: growing their companies.

I don’t see myself as someone who just sells a service.

I’m in the relationship business. After all these years, a huge part of my day is still spent educating leaders and business owners about options they didn’t even know existed. I love those moments when an owner realizes there’s a better way to handle something that’s been weighing them down. That’s the real value in what I do. Being a trusted advisor and partner they can call when they’re navigating growth or facing tough decisions.

As a woman in the industry, I’ve learned that authenticity is my greatest asset. I bring a perspective that’s shaped by being a mother, an entrepreneur, and someone who’s had to earn her seat at the table. That experience makes me a better advocate for my clients and a passionate mentor for other women finding their way in professional environments. I believe deeply in community, lifting others up, and showing up as my full self. At the end of the day, business is personal to me.

Legacy. I want my children to see their mom show up fully. Not always perfect, but authentically. I want the next generation of women, especially young Latinas to see someone who looks like them and think “if she can do it, so can I.” That’s the kind of success that matters to me. Purpose, growth and legacy.

What aspects of this industry do you enjoy the most?

Transformation is what I would say I enjoy the most. I get to walk into situations where business owners are buried in many issues. Ultimately, owners find themselves constantly putting out fires. I get to help them flip the script. They go from reacting, to be proactive. They can lead strategically, streamlining operations, and their employees have benefits worth talking about.

What experiences shaped you into the strong woman you are today?

Like many women, my strength wasn’t formed in comfort, it came through challenge. Growing up in a border town shaped my resilience and perspective early on and gave me a foundation. It gave me adaptability, empathy and a deep understanding that hard work and sacrifice aren’t just values, they are survival skills. But the real shaping happened as life unfolded, navigating career growth, building businesses, personal transitions, and figuring out how to be both a mother and someone with big professional ambitions.

There were plenty moments of doubt. Times when I had to reinvent myself when the path I was on wasn’t working, both personally and professionally. Hard lessons taught me about confidence, boundaries, and the cost of not owning my own voice. Those experiences showed me that strength isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being authentic, staying grounded, and continuing to move forward, even when the path isn’t clear.

What inspired you to enter this industry?

Honestly, it wasn’t a straight line, and I think that’s part of what makes my perspective valuable. I started in medical sales, then moved into business banking and financial services. I was working with business owners day in and day out, and I kept seeing the same thing. These are incredibly talented entrepreneurs who were drowning in issues that were pulling them away from running their businesses.

It was eye-opening to see how underserved they were. These aren’t just operational challenges, they are the kind of issues that keep owners up at night, creating real financial pressures, and in some cases, putting them and their companies at risk. When I discovered the PEO model, it felt like I had found my calling. I found something that allowed me to genuinely solve problems that mattered to help protect what business owners had built and give them back bandwidth to lead and grow their businesses. That realization changed everything for me. I finally understood what it meant to build my career around impact. That’s still what makes me excited to show up every day.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from El Paso, Texas, with deep family roots in Chihuahua, Mexico, and that heritage is woven into everything I do. Growing up on the border, I was surrounded by two cultures, two languages, and a community where hard work wasn’t just valued, it was a way of life. My family taught me what resilience really looks like, not through words, but through their actions. Sacrifice wasn’t something we talked about, it was just what you did for your family and the people you loved.

Those experiences gave me the foundation that I didn’t fully realize or appreciate until I was older. A foundation that I operate with today. Unshakeable work ethic, gratitude for opportunity and an understanding that success isn’t just about what you achieve, it’s about who you bring along with you. That border town mentality, the blend of Mexican soul, and Texas grit guides how I show up in business and in life.

What drives you to succeed?

Purpose. When I help business owners get their business in order, it’s not just the administrative burden.

It means their employees get better benefits, families have more security, and that business owner can rest a little easier. That ripple effect and impact is real.

Growth. The kind that that keeps you uncomfortable in the best way. I never want to stop learning or pushing myself because I’ve gotten comfortable.

What advice would you give to others, especially women, about pursuing their dreams?

Don’t wait until you feel ready because the truth is, most people never feel fully ready, and that’s okay.

Bet on yourself anyway. Confidence takes that audacious faith to take that first step or as many say, leap.

You build it through action, through trying, through learning what works and what doesn’t. Voltaire says, “Perfect is the enemy of good”. In short, trying to be perfect is unachievable so set your bar high and go for it. Even if it’s not quite perfect.

Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you. Seek mentorship, build strong networks, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice. And here’s a big one in my book, don’t shrink yourself to make others comfortable.

Is there anything about you that you’d like people to know?

What people see is the public side of me. The brand, the career, the title, is only a small part of the story of who I am. Behind that is someone who has worked relentlessly, learned a lot from setbacks, and stayed committed to growing, both personally and professionally.

Being a great mother is very important to me. I try to show up as a real person, not just in my role but all areas of my life. I lead with heart, I’m transparent, and I do my best to act with integrity in every decision I make. Even when it may not benefit me.

Do you have a favorite quote that resonates with you?

One that has stayed with me is: “She believed she could, so she did.”

It’s simple, but really captures my essence of confidence, courage, and perseverance. Those values have shaped both my personal and professional journey. Whenever I’ve faced a big decision or new challenge, I come back to that idea.

Believing in yourself is often the first and most important step.

My journey has taken me far from home, though; I’ve had the privilege of serving in the US Air Force, which led me to live in Okinawa, Japan, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Later, I spent three years in Omaha, Nebraska, pursuing my law degree—a chapter that broadened my perspective and helped shape my professional path.

How did you get started in your business?

My entry into the real estate business grew from a personal connection and a gap I noticed in the market. As a teenager, my adopted father Roy introduced me to real estate resales and encouraged me to consider a career as a real estate lawyer, pointing out where real opportunities lay. Although he passed (age 46) away when I was 21 and never saw me become a real estate lawyer or investor, his guidance left an indelible mark on my ambitions.

Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration comes from humble beginnings. My early years were challenging—my mother struggled with addiction, and I was removed from her custody at age 10. Soon after, Roy adopted me and became a guiding force in my life. His teachings were invaluable, especially about doing the right thing and living below one’s means—lessons that have stayed with me.

Tell us about your business.

My business today focuses on real estate transactions and investing. The transition from law school to running a business was tough, as no one really teaches you how to be a business owner as a lawyer. Around 2004, in Houston, I met a remarkable real estate investor named Charles, who despite modest formal education, was already a seasoned real estate investor.

He taught me how to find exceptional deals, track down leads, and navigate the complexities of real estate—essentially, how to be a bit of a private investigator for distressed properties.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve taught others these skills and personally closed hundreds of deals.

Now, with the market cooling, I help clients primarily with owner finance transactions, deeds, and clearing title issues. My main clients tend to be investors working with sellers who need to move on from properties they can’t keep up with. My role is to protect both buyers’ and sellers’ rights—there are plenty of bad actors in real estate, and I aim to ensure fairness and transparency.

What gets you motivated to be driven?

What keeps me motivated is the desire to make a positive impact in my field and to keep learning and growing. There’s a real thrill in overcoming challenges, and that energy fuels me every day.

One of my favorite quotes, which truly resonates with me, is Oscar Wilde’s “No good deed goes unpunished.” I’ve learned that while it’s important to help others, it’s also wise to stay cautious—self-interest can sometimes overshadow good intentions.

How about your family? Can you tell us about them?

As for my family and friends, I’m grateful for their unwavering support, even if they love to tease me. I have 3 grown daughters who have no idea how proud I am of them and hope they are enjoying their journey in life. I am lucky to be in a committed relation with the most amazing & gorgeous Charlene. She is a feisty & passionate in life person and keeps life interesting. 😊Having her, family and wonderful friends in my life is a real blessing

Beyond work, I’m a firm believer in the power of collaboration and community. I enjoy connecting with others and sharing knowledge whenever I can. To keep a balanced life, I make time for exercise, golf, and especially travel. Over the past six years, I’ve been fortunate to visit Italy, France, Spain, Australia (three times!), England and Ireland (four times!), South America, Canada, and so many parts of the United States. These experiences keep me energized and inspired.
