The leading industries in Elbląg that have been building its economic potential for several scores of years are furniture, energy and metallurgy. They also foster development of the IT industry and that all accounts for the existence of specialised sectors of energy industry, mechanical engineering and geoinformatics.
The furniture industry, being the leading one in the city, consists of numerous business entities employing nearly 5,000 people. Wójcik Meble with its three factories is a representative of the furniture industry, being one of the top Polish furniture manufacturers. A thriving business, it has managed to reached some new markets (for instance Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Britain, the Czech republic, Slovakia and Ukraine). The company is the first and the biggest investor in Warmia- Masuria Special Economic Zone Elbląg Subzone. In 2007 Klaster Mebel-Elbląg (Cluster of furniture industry in Elbląg) started off as one of the first cluster initiatives in Warmia-Masuria. Comprising 28 local firms, it supports its members in the development of the industry potential both at home and abroad.
