VOLUME SIX: THE STRATEGIC BOMBING CAMPAIGN OVER SOUTH-EAST EUROPE 1 NOVEMBER 1943 TO 30 JUNE 1944
CHRISTOPHER SHORES AND RUSSELL GUEST WITH GIOVANNI MASSIMELLO, ANDREW THOMAS, FRANK OLYNYK AND WINFRIED BOCK
Following the inter-Allied Casablanca Conference in January 1943 the outline for the Combined Bomber Offensive was agreed and resulted in early February with the ‘Casablanca Directive’ which required the “progressive destruction and dislocation of the German military, industrial and economic systems. This directive was clarified in June with the ‘Pointblank Directive’ that stated that the highest priority targets were the fighter aircraft factories to ensure that in the coming invasion of France the enemy would not have air superiority.
When these directives were issued it was envisaged that the strategic bomber forces in Italy would also begin operations once suitable bases were available. After the Allied landings in Italy and resulting collapse of the Italian fascist regime a network of bomber bases was hastily developed. Thus, on 1 November 1943 the US Fifteenth Air Force was formed to conduct the daylight bombing offensive against strategic targets in southern Germany and across south-eastern Europe. This new formation was joined by the smaller, but highly effective 205 Group, RAF that was trained and equipped for night bombing.
The damaging attacks on the Reich’s oil supplies and the highly effective Danube mining campaign conducted at night by 205 Group delivered huge strategic effect. The latter reduced vital oil and goods traffic into the Reich to a trickle but also dislocated the supply and logistics train into the southern part of the Eastern Front so giving manifest support to the Soviets.
In this volume the early months of this hugely significant air campaign are described in minute and original detail, and accompanied by hundreds of hitherto unpublished photographs, in combating the actions of Germany’s Axis allies such as Hungary, Rumania and Bulgaria that were encountered for the first time by the Western Allies.

“When the series is completed, it will constitute the most complete record of this theatre of war to have been compiled. It is unlikely to be surpassed.”
Volume Seven covers the strategic bombing offensive from 1 July 1944 until the end of the war in May 1945. It details the increasingly heavy USAAF daylight bombing attacks against targets in southern Germany and Austria, but also the final raids against Rumanian oilfields until they fell to the advancing Soviets as the Eastern Front collapsed.
The harrowing story of the efforts to resupply the beleaguered Polish Home Army is described in full as well as continuing the story of the strategic bombing offensive. Despite many difficulties the Luftwaffe and its remaining Axis allies in Hungary and the fascist ANR in Italy fought with grim determination and courage. Losses to fighters and the highly effective flak were heavy. Later the might of the heavy bomber force was also used for direct support to the Allied armies battling their way north in Italy.
As in previous volumes the authors offer a chronological narrative of this significant campaign against the industrial capacity of the Third Reich that is complimented with a matrix of claims and losses from all sides, all shown in minute and previously unpublished detail with stunning photographs.

AND THE ROYAL AIR FORCE IN PRINCELY INDIA PETER VACHER
This is the story of a maharaja’s passion for aviation which led to the establishment of a flying club in the state of Jodhpur in the 1930s.
Maharaja Umaid Singh was a keen aviator who gained his Pilot’s Licence during graduation from RAF Cranwell. In 1931 he oversaw the establishment of the Jodhpur Flying Club. This popular club soon became an important stopover for keen adventurers of the 1930s including Jean Batten, Bert Hinkler and Lores Bonney and also contributed towards the establishment of early commercial air routes to South East Asia.
By the Second World War, the club was set up as a RAF training base and played host to the RAF with the establishment of No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School to support the Allied war effort. Following on from Indian Independence in 1947 and the untimely death of the maharaja, the club had closed by the early 1950s.
Throughout there are photographs that document what life was like in Jodhpur and at the club. They also give insight into the maharaja’s love of aviation and the collection of aircraft he amassed during the club’s years in service including one of the first Lockheed 12A Electra to be owned in India.
This highly illustrated book, authored by Peter Vacher, is a tribute to the Jodhpur Flying Club, the people who made it a success, and the birth of aviation in India during the early 20th century. It is also a candid look at the royal family and the influence of aviation in their lives.

THE INSPIRING STORY OF CYRIL ‘FRANK’ BABBAGE, BATTLE OF BRITAIN SPITFIRE ACE TURNED D-DAY
MOSQUITO PILOT
AIR MARSHAL G. A. ‘BLACK’ ROBERTSON
One of the few RAF aircrew to play a central part in two of the Second World War’s most momentous events, the Battle of Britain and D-Day, Cyril ‘Frank’ Babbage was a survivor. He wasn’t just an immensely skilled pilot; he was also blessed with extraordinary good fortune. Shot down three times, once by a Ritterkreuz (Knight’s Cross) holder, he would later claim the first of the new German Focke-Wulf 190 fighters lost in aerial combat, killing another Ritterkreuz holder in the process. If Babbage’s name was little known, his image shot to national prominence in late August 1940, briefly becoming the face of ‘The Few’. Photographs appeared in the press of him stepping out of a rowing boat on Bognor beach after baling out and being rescued by fishermen.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN PILOT AND SECOND WORLD WAR ACE RICK PEACOCK-EDWARDS
The grandson of a prominent Edinburgh lawyer, and the son of a self-made farmer in South Africa and Southern Rhodesia, Teddy Peacock-Edwards was born on 27 May 1915, in Kokstad, South Africa. He was one of eleven young men from Southern Rhodesia recruited into the RAF in 1938 and thence followed a multi-varied time in the RAF encompassing the full span of the Second World War.

His fascinating wartime experiences are complimented brilliantly by the stories of those who crossed his path, famous names like Amy Johnson and Douglas Bader as well as countless other unsung heroes from squadrons he served on such as 602, 41 and 464 (RAAF). Between his contrasting operational tours he was a flying instructor. It was a role to which he returned postwar when he converted to jets and commanded one of the first Meteor advanced flying training units.
Wing Commander C. F. Babbage DFM, AE retired in the summer of 1964. Like so many of his ilk, he owed his final years of peacetime service to the sacrifices of others – others like those brave men with whom he flew, but who enjoyed less than their own share of good luck.

This book, written by his acclaimed fighter pilot son, Rick Peacock-Edwards, describes his father’s formative years and gives his overall impressions of him as an individual, a father, and fighter pilot and then later covers Teddy’s experiences as a Fairey Battle pilot in France from September 1939 to June 1940 as a part of the British Expeditionary Force. The next phase of his life involved conversion to the Hurricane and as a pilot in the Battle of Britain, based at Kenley in Surrey on 253 Squadron. This period was immediately followed by an involvement in the defence of Malta in 1941, mainly as a flight commander on 261 Squadron, again equipped with Hurricanes. The story then progressively moves towards the Far East leading to a period of more than two years in Ceylon where he fought the Japanese during their Easter Sunday 1942 surprise attack on Colombo. Teddy also met his future wife, Jill, whilst in Ceylon. Wartime experiences are enhanced by reference to over 60 letters written by Teddy to his sister back in Rhodesia during the Second World War.
The rest of the book covers the period from his return from Ceylon in the summer of 1944 to his post-war involvement in the RAF, and his return to South Africa. This is a fascinating insight from someone who, because of his comparative experiences and achievements, understands better than most the requirements for becoming a successful fighter pilot. A unique tribute to a remarkable man.

FLYING PHANTOMS, JAVELINS AND TORNADOS IN THE COLD WAR
ALAN MUNRO
In Fast Jets on the Front Line, Alan Munro reflects on his time in the RAF and the Cold War jets which he flew. Having started his career after basic training on the Gloster Javelin with No. 228 OCU, Alan went on to become a flying instructor at No. 1 Flying Training Schoool, Linton-on-Ouse. But with the UK’s withdrawal from East of Suez, he found himself with a ground posting and questioning whether he would see front-line flying again. Luckily for Alan, this wasn’t the case and he was soon posted to Lightnings and Harriers before returning to 228 OCU to fly on Phantoms.
It is Alan’s time on the Phantoms that is the main crux of this book. He discusses how the withdrawal of Lightnings from the air force changed the Phantom’s role from attack to defence and the impact this had on Phantom squadrons like 29 Squadron which he flew on. A move to RAF Germany saw Alan find the front-line action he craved during his ground posting and he joined 19 Squadron as they became operational and part of RAF Germany’s Battle Flight. During his time with RAF Germany, Alan flew with a number of NATO countries and he recounts tales of squadron exchanges. This then led to a tour at the NATO Tactical Leadership Programme in Jever, north Germany before he finished his time on the Tornado GR.1 in the early 1990s. Illustrated throughout with photographs from the author’s private collection this is a must for fans of the Cold War era fighters.

TRUE TALES OF THE RAF IN INDIA, SOUTH EAST ASIA AND HONG KONG STEVE BOND
For 82 years the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), which in 1918 became the Royal Air Force (RAF), maintained a permanent military aviation presence in the Far East. Throughout that time a huge variety of squadrons, flying many different aircraft types, together with all the necessary operational, technical and administrative support, took on all that was asked of them.
ALAN MUNRO flew ATC T31 gliders in the late 1950s, and then Tiger Moths on an RAF flying scholarship. He flew the Phantom FRG.2 (F-4M) and FG.1 (F-4K), through the 1970s and early 1980s, amassing a total of 2,253 hours on type, including those flown as a Phantom QFI. His first fighter was the Gloster Javelin in Singapore and the last was the Tornado GR.1 at the TTTE, RAF Cottesmore. He went on to fly the Airbus A320 and supplemented this with flying club instructing and later gliding.

The first RFC units arrived in India in 1915. RAF India grew substantially in the interwar period and throughout World War Two. Various changes in the command structure finally saw the creation of the Far East Air Force (FEAF) in June 1949, covering South East Asia and Hong Kong. In the 1960s the UK government decided to withdraw all forces East of Suez and on 31 October 1971 the FEAF disbanded and most UK forces withdrew from Singapore at this time. The last RAF unit to leave the region was 28 Squadron flying. They had been operating Whirlwind and Wessex helicopters in Hong Kong until the territory was handed back to China in 1997.
RAF Boys in the Far East illustrates what it was like for those air and ground crew who were there by telling their stories in their own words, supported by explanation of the situations at the time and photographs primarily drawn from veterans’ own collections. The stories are as varied as the locations, the units and the personnel; everyday operations, exercises, triumph and tragedy, off duty time, and of course, the humour for which the RAF is renowned.
Chapters focus on differing aircraft roles and their operations, including emphasis on the war years in India and Burma, and the Singapore era with actions such as Operation Firedog and the Indonesian Confrontation. Today those veterans who look back on their time served in the FEAF do so with a great deal of pride, and rightly so. This is their story.

THE EXHILARATING EXPLOITS OF THE EARLY MACH BUSTERS FROM 1945 ONWARDS
This is a tale of the generation of test pilots flying experimental aircraft powered by rocket motors during the period from 1945 to the mid-1970s. It is not a technical description of the aircraft they flew but the narrative of the men who built the machines and the pilots who took to the air to achieve unprecedented speeds and altitudes unequalled to the present. It is a human story, but one carved out of the evolving post-war world, coming to terms with a new tension between global superpowers and one in which technological progress was arguably the greatest it has been since 1945.
The book integrates the story of post-war US industry, the competitive drive to survive between plane-makers made rich by war production, challenged by the changed times of demobilisation and peace. Into the mix come fighter pilots and company men eager to sustain their craft and take on new challenges, alongside an emerging generation of post-war graduates straight from engineering or flight school, eager to make their mark. With a focus on those who achieved extraordinary things like Major ‘Chuck’ Yeager, Scott Crossfield and Joe Walker, there is also a look at those outside of the US’s endeavours including how Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown became the only non-German to fly the rocket-powered Me 163 and the test-flying of John Booth and Peter Lamb.
Rocket Boys is a record of the glorious years when nothing seemed impossible and which produced a group that propelled aviation into the stratosphere with devil-may-care attitudes and personal fortitude, with death and disaster stalking the very best.

HERO OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN: THE LIFE OF THE GREAT FIGHTER ACE HELEN DOE
The first full reappraisal of one of Britain’s great fighter aces, this book examines the truth behind Tuck’s 1956 biography, Fly for Your Life. It looks at the evidence behind the myths, and reveals the real Stanford Tuck, a more complex man than the one-dimensional hero of the previous biography.
During the Second World War, Bob Tuck was a top-scoring British fighter ace with an official score of 29 enemy aircraft destroyed by January 1942 and had become the glamorous role model for the RAF publicity machine. He had joined the RAF in 1935 and quickly showed his excellent flying skills. In 1940 his Spitfire squadron was fighting over Dunkirk where he first proved himself an expert shot. During the Battle of Britain his legendary prowess grew, and he was posted to command a leaderless and demoralised squadron, this time flying Hurricanes, where he continued to prove himself an outstanding fighter ace, gaining the rare distinction of three DFCs and then the DSO for his leadership.
Shot down over France in January 1942, he was imprisoned in Stalag Luft III alongside Roger Bushell, the mastermind of the Great Escape. In January 1944, he was purged along with around 20 other POWs to a new camp. Still determined to escape, he took a risky chance during the Long March along with a Polish officer, making their way east to Russian forces and thence to England. Post-war he became good friends with the Luftwaffe ace, Adolf Galland, and was a key advisor with him on the film, Battle of Britain, and, often with his other friend, Douglas Bader, made many media appearances. His health suffered in later years from the impact of his war service and his imprisonment and he died aged 70 in 1987.
