Dear Brothers, Summer is over and we are now preparing for the Fall Reunion. This year the Fall Reunion will be held Friday, November 11 th and 12 th . Many of the Valleys in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction are joining with the Southern Masonic Jurisdiction by holding their Reunion on Veteran’s Day to honor those brave men and women who served this great country. Plan to join us for this event. I hope you were able to take part in the many activities being held by the Scottish Rite Clubs throughout our Valley this past Summer. They were held for your benefit as a means of getting more out of being a member of this great Fraternity. The few I was able to attend were GREAT! You couldn’t ask for better fellowship. That same fellowship is expressed during our Reunions. So many times, not just in the Scottish Rite, but in other organizations as well, I hear members ask, “W hat has this organizations done for me?” I ask, “W hat have you done for the organization?” In other words, you receive from your being a member by what you give to the organization. Several years ago a member of Rotary wrote an article for the Rotarian, their international publication, asking the question “Are you a MINO (pronounced minnow)?” I thought this was very cleaver AND TRUE! If you can’t guess what a M INO is, it stands for M ember In Name Only. People who are content in paying their dues, but rarely, if ever, take an active part in any activities or programs. Then when that organization votes on something and they don't agree with the result, they are one of the first ones to complain. I can’t think of anything greater than being a member of the Masonic Fraternity. I feel honored and privileged to be accepted into such a great and philanthropic organization. I just wish more members would take part in the various activities and degree work. Our fraternity offers so many opportunities. There are opportunities to meet people you would never meet anywhere else; opportunities to take part in, or watch, degrees you witnessed so long ago and opportunities for you to renew old friendships and acquaintances. Unless you take part those opportunities will be lost forever. So I ask you: “Are you a MINO?” I continually speak of the great time we have at the reunions and various functions, but there is always something missing. That something is the attendance of many of our members. Our Valley has been trying to make the reunions more enjoyable, and interesting for everyone. Please let us know if you have any suggestions. The Executive Secretary’s phone number and e-mail address is in this newsletter. Also, if you happen to be behind in your dues, (the 2006 dues are now due) please contact our Executive Secretary, Gerry Millar to make arrangements on getting current. He’s easy to work with and may have an option for you to get current with your dues. I feel sad when I see, or hear, of anyone being suspended for non-payment of dues. Many times a suspension could have been averted. If you are in poor health, financially strapped, or whatever, a simple call to the Executive Secretary will help to ease your mind and keep your membership active. That's enough for now, I hope you will find time to join us in November when we pay tribute to our Veterans. W e thank God for the sacrifice they gave so we are able to live in a country that is free.

The Ladies Lounge really had some character that they would come back from the laundry as cut-off shorts! I worked in an office for many years and often had men come to the window over my desk asking if the company in back was hiring. Most of them came in looking as though they needed a shower, shave and haircut, and the clothes they had on shouldn’t have been worn away from home, and they were job hunting? I often felt like saying “Go home, take a shower, shave, get a haircut and put on some decent clothes and then I’ll tell you whether or not Globe is hiring.” You know what, they weren’t really serious about getting a job. continued on page 5

Casual Clothes-Casual Manners? Well, I’m back on the subject of clothing again. What would we do without T-shirts, sweatshirts, jeans Jeanette Minch or shorts and sport shoes? Everywhere you go that’s what people are wearing – at the store – traveling – shopping – or at church. I remember going shopping or to church or out for dinner and dressing up! A nice dress, heels and sometimes even white gloves were proper attire. Going to church? Don’t even think about not dressing up. When one traveled, again the proper clothing was dressy or at least dressy casual. Somewhere along the line, what people wore at home for working about the house or yard or participating in sports became what people were wearing for everything. We once went to theatre in Chicago and although most people were dressed up – men in suits and ladies in dresses or formal gowns – there were a few wearing jeans. I would say that now most would be in the casual clothes and the few would be dressed up. I’ve seen pictures of early day attendees at the Indy 500 race. First of all there were no women, but second of all, all the men were wearing suits and most had hats as well. I find it a little bizarre to consider going to the 500 race dressed up like that as obviously jeans or shorts and T-shirts and sport shoes are far more practical for that activity. The men of the early races surely had no other clothes to wear to such an event. They considered the blue jeans that they had as work clothes, not as clothes appropriate to attend a social function. Let’s face it, almost all of the things we now wear for casual weren’t even invented then. One of the things that really bothers me about this casual dress is that so many are wearing jeans or shorts that look as though they should have been relegated to the rag bag a year or so ago. We went to a family reunion in July and one of the cousin’s daughters was wearing jeans that were pretty raggedy. Of course, I know that you can go to the store and buy so-called new jeans that are already graced with holes! And you pay extra for such styling! We were in a restaurant last night and one of the employees had on a pair of cut-off cargo pants that had a big hole in the front. His under shorts were plainly in sight! My boys used to complain that when they got their jeans to look like they

LADIES PROGRAM --- LADIES PROGRAM This years Fall reunion will be held on November 11th and 12th , in honor of our military Veterans. On Friday the 11th, we are invited to dinner with the Scottish Rite members and while the men go back to do more degree work, we will plan something to entertain all the ladies. Following the end of the Rose Croix degree we will all be heading out to the Comfort Inn at 4155 28th St. SE for a good time at the hospitality suite. If you haven’t been there, you should join us. There is an open bar and lots of delicious snacks to munch on. It is a great time to sit and chat with old friends and to make some new ones too. On Saturday November 11th, we will be having lunch at Sayfee's Restaurant, 3555 Lake Eastbrook Blvd. SE, behind Center Pointe Mall. Lunch choices will be made off the menu. After lunch, we will return to the Masonic Center for our Annual Fall Craft Auction, which will be held in the Eastern Star Room on the 3rd floor at 2:30 p.m.. So ladies, please get busy so we can have lots of goodies to sell. All proceeds go the West Michigan 32º Masonic Learning Center for Children. The auction will start at 2:30 p.m., so plan to be there. We look forward to seeing you on November 11th & th 12 . Please send your reservations to the Scottish Rite Office. If you will need a ride to and from the Restaurant, please let either me or the Scottish Rite office know and we will make the necessary arrangements to get you there. (Reservations by November 4th please). With the exception of the ladies' luncheon, your banquet reservations must be made with the Scottish Rite member's reservations. Bonnie Watson 616 361-9593

I’ve heard that a lot of problems with teenagers in high school stem from clothes. Teenagers can be very competitive about what they wear, girls especially. If you are not wearing the “right” name brand or the “right” style you can be picked on unmercifully. I am all for uniforms in schools if it prevents this kind of bullying. If not uniforms there could be a strict dress code. Now one of the problems in the schools regarding clothes is with teachers dressing too provocatively. No wonder the kids think its proper to dress with mid-riff showing, or in sheer shirts. Boys have enough hormones raging without enticing them further with sexy looking clothes. I guess the thing that really bothers me about all of the casualness or sloppiness in dress is that along with it we have become too casual and even sloppy about manners and courtesy. What ever happened to the little niceties that people used in the “olden days”? Does casual dress excuse you from saying please and thank you, or being otherwise courteous to other people? I don’t think so. Sweats, T-shirts and jeans are a lot more comfortable than dress attire, but comfortable clothes don’t provide an excuse for sloppiness in courtesy and manners.

What is a Vet Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's alloy forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? •

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel. • He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel. • She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang. • He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL. • He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs. • He is the parade-riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand. • He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by. • He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's bottomless deep. • He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and agonizingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come. • He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. • He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say "Thank You". That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded. Are You, or Have You Been a Member of the ©Father Denis Edward O'Brien USMC Armed Forces? Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".
