D.I.Y Leaf Pencil Jar Craft & Photos by: Anika & Evelyn Eagan

Supplies: white glue paintbrush permanent marker scissors empty plastic bottle freshly fallen leaves with the stems cut off

Directions: Step 1: Use the marker to draw a line around the bottle. (We used the label as a guide, then took it off once the line was drawn.) Step 2: Ask an adult to cut off the top of the bottle (on the line). Step 3: Use the paintbrush to spread glue over the outside of the bottle. Step 4: Place leaves over the glue. Step 5: Paint a layer of glue on top of the leaves. Step 6: Allow the glue to dry. You may have to reshape the leaves so that they attach to the bottle. Add more glue as needed.

When your container is dry you can use it to hold your pencils or pens. It also makes a nice fall centerpiece.

About the Authors Anika Eagan is in the fifth grade and loves arts and crafts, as well as writing. To Lease or To Finance: That is the Question!

sion to lease or buy will have an effect on how that depreciation influences your finances.

When it comes to buying a new car, you have three options: purchasing it with cash, purchasing it through a loan (also known as financing) or leasing it. For most shoppers, the decision comes down to buying or leasing.

When you finance a car, you own it once you pay off the loan. This means that you personally take the hit on its depreciation, but it also means you also “own” its residual value. Although that value depreciates over time, if there comes a time when you’re ready to sell it or trade it in, you get the benefit of that resale or trade-in value.

On the surface, the differences between leasing and buying a vehicle seem fairly straightforward. Leasing a car means you’ll usually have access to a new set of wheels every few years; buying it likely means that you plan to drive the same car for a much longer period of time. Leasing usually includes a warranty that covers most of your repairs; buying means accepting larger repair costs, which are inevitable as the car ages. Leasing agreements can limit your mileage and your ability to customize your ride; buying means you can put as many miles as you want on the car and customize it however you’d like. Looking only at the comparisons above, you might conclude that buying a car is a more practical and economical option than leasing a car—but if that’s really the case, why are monthly lease payments so much lower (often 40% lower!) than monthly loan payments? Why is leasing considered more expensive in the long term if you’re paying less on a month-to-month basis? To answer these questions, let’s take a look at the concept of depreciation. Depreciation means a loss of value over time. New cars are a textbook example—you’ve likely heard that a car loses thousands of dollars in value 8

Growing Up In the Valley • October 2015

the moment you drive it off the lot. That’s accurate, and that’s depreciation at work (and yes, it can be kind of depressing). All cars depreciate in value over time, but the steepest drop happens in the first three to five years, as you can see below: • Brand new to 5 years old—the car depreciates by 15% to 20% of its value each year • From 5 years to 10 years—the rate of depreciation slows slightly to 10% to 15% of its value each year • 10+ years—the rate of depreciation tends to level out to less than 5% a year. By this time, the car is usually worth less than one-fifth of its retail price! Depreciation takes its toll on the value of every vehicle. However, your deci-

By contrast, when you lease a car, you never actually own it. The company that leases the car to you is responsible for selling the car once you’ve completed your lease term. The leasing company also ultimately deals with the car’s depreciation in value. You get to drive a brand new car without needing to think about its loss in value. That sounds pretty great, right? In reality, even though the leasing company deals with the eventual sale of the car, you’re the one who makes up for its loss in value through your monthly payments. That payment includes an estimate of how much the car will depreciate by the time your term is up.

Monthly payments are lower because you’re not paying for the entire car— you’re just paying for how much the car will depreciate in those few years that you’re driving it (a period of time when, coincidentally, the car depreciates the most). When you finance a car, the monthly payments are higher because you are paying for the entire car, plus interest on the loan. When you pay the loan back, your monthly payments stop (unlike leasing payments, which continue as long as you’re still leasing) and even though your car will have depreciated

in value by that point, you will own the remaining value. As with any major financial decision, there are also other factors that come into play. You need to be realistic about your budget and honest about your lifestyle, and you need to figure out what’s most important to you as a new car owner. How comfortable are you with the limitations set by a lease agreement? How prepared are you to pay for eventual car repairs? Will driving a new car every two to three years be worth thousands of dollars more in the long run? To some people, it might

be—it all depends on a combination of your personal needs and preferences. Laurissa resides in Roanoke with her family and is the Director of Marketing for Blue Eagle© Credit Union. She has worked in credit unions for more than 20 years, has a passion for financial education, and believes stronger individuals make a stronger community.

Understanding Your Health: A Look at the flu October

is known for its crisp weather, rich colors and pumpkin-flavored everything. Something else that begins In October, however, is flu season.

Children younger than 5 years old, adults of 65 years or older and pregnant women are at the highest risk for developing flu-related illness.

Every year, up to 20 percent of U.S. residents get the flu, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized because of it. While the statistics can seem intimidating, knowing about the facts, the symptoms and the vaccination can help you and your family to best prepare for this year’s flu season.

Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms can last one to two weeks.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness resulting from influenza viruses. It spreads when a person with the flu coughs, sneezes or talks, causing droplets containing their germs to land in someone else’s mouth or nose. The virus can also live on surfaces and spread when someone touches it and then touches their own mouth, eyes or nose.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), people with the flu may be able to infect others starting one day before symptoms begin until five to seven days after being sick. Children and people with weakened immune systems, however, can have the virus present in their body for longer periods of time and are more prone to being contagious even after being sick. While it typically peaks in January or February, flu activity starts in October. The best protection against it is the flu vaccination. Be-

cause it may take about two weeks for the vaccination to start protecting against to flu, individuals are encouraged to get it as soon as possible. Additionally, infants and young children who have not had the flu vaccine in the past, need 2 doses of flu vaccine one month apart for maximum protection. The vaccine is available in a shot or a nasal spray, and under the Affordable Care Act, many insurers are required to cover preventive services like the flu vaccine at no cost to the individual. The vaccination is recommended for everyone six months and older. Caregivers of young infants are always advised to get the vaccination, but especially when around children who are under six months or children who have health problems that make them more vulnerable.

20% of U.S. residents get the flu each year 10

Family Living

Eating Together: A Family Tradition During the week, our family likes to eat dinner together every night. Sometimes we go out to eat, but most of the time my mom will cook. I like to ask her in the morning what she is cooking for dinner and then I plan what type of night we will have. If she makes tacos, we have Mexican night. If she makes spaghetti, we have Italian night. I like it when she brings me in the kitchen and lets me to help her cook. I don’t like getting things from the oven and sometimes the hot stove scares me, but she stands next to me to help keep me safe. When she is finishing up dinner, I set the table. Most of the time we use paper napkins and I will fold them pretty or even draw on them. I like to find a centerpiece in all of her holiday decorations to find something to put in the middle of the table. If it is Italian night, I like to put out candles. If we are having Chinese, I put out this neat mask that Cha-Chi gave us that looks oriental. Or sometimes I will pick flowers from outside and put in a vase for the middle. I also like to turn on music to set the mood. I will pull up YouTube and just search for Italian dinner music, or Mexican restaurant music. Sometimes I will put it on classical music, or even 80’s music. One time, my mom fixed some type of chicken and I wanted to make

My mom always tells me how important it is for us to eat together as a family. That’s what she did with my Granny and Paw-Paw and it gives us a chance to talk about our day. They ask me about school and then sometimes they will talk about work. Most of the time we will talk about what we are going to have the next day for dinner so I can plan. I always like asking if we can have breakfast for dinner, and afterwards we will play Boggle or Phase 10. I like to have this family tradition and it is so much fun being a part of the planning. Sometimes we bring out fancy dishes to eat on, and I love it when Jamey surprises us and says that we are going to make cookies for dessert. Sometimes we will surprise mom and take her out for ice cream, and the dog will come with us. We also like to help her clean up after dinner while she gets the game ready for game night. I hope this is a tradition that more families will do when they read about what our family does! One of the favorite things that my mom fixes when she does breakfast for dinner is a Sausage Casserole. We are
