“There’s a lot of misconception and a lot of ill formed opinions out there. It is something that needs to be worked on to improve the situation.” As opening statements go, that by Chris Le Galle is particularly forthright. Yet it is hardly surprising.

As the founding member of the annual Malta Comic Con and an author of one of Malta’s first graphic novels in the form of The Golden Lizard, comics inevitably have a major influence in his life. His desire to share

by Paul Grech the hobby, however, isn’t completely driven by his own love for comics but a belief borne through personal experience of their benefit.

“I was always a bookworm. Naturally, when you’re young, stories with imagery appeal more to you so I used to really enjoy them,” he recalls. “I have comics from when I was a kid that I still occasionally read today. Then there was a period in my life when I effectively only read novels because it was very difficult in Malta to find comics for sale. Eventually, I found out that there was a comics’ store here as well and when I saw all those comics I went crazy!”

For him, comics provided a way to reignite his love for reading. “A lot of people complain because their kids don’t want to read but it depends on what you give them to read. When I was young we used to be told to read the Reader’s Digest but for me that was extremely boring. Then I found an English teacher who told me not to read

that and encouraged me to read what I like.”

Le Galle’s story is fairly typical. Sadly it often has a different conclusion with the child in question deciding that books aren’t for him.

Yet there will also be those whose opinions of comics will always be that they are, effectively, a bit of joke with poorly written English. It is a claim that Le Galle has often heard before and one that he immediately rebuffs.

“A lot of people who write comics have also published novels. One of the most popular is Neil Giaman whose reputation was formed by modern classics like Neverwhere and American Idols but who has also written a number of comics.”

“As with any other medium, particularly one that has a strong industry behind it, there are professional editors who go through the work.” Le Galle continues.

“The fact that there are images helps one to understand expressions, characterisations and how different people interact.

Personally, I think that there are some exceptional writers out there. Obviously, there are also amateurs. Self published graphic novels, for instance, can be a bit or miss but that is the same for any genre of books.”

“As with any other entertainment medium, it is very pleasurable.

The story telling element is very strong in comics. Myself, being a writer, that is something that I look out for. Obviously, an artist will tell you a different story and that they look out more for the drawing side of things. I think that’s important as well but I give greater weight to the story narrative element.”

So what makes a good comic? “One that is entertaining, that has a very good story and is visually very interesting,” comes the reply.

Three years ago, Le Galle’s love for comics took a different twist when he helped set up Malta’ s own comic con.

“The whole thing started when Joe Bugeja wanted to do an exhibition of artwork and the people at St. James Cavallier asked us to look at ways to make it more interesting. What we did was round up local comic artists and we did a sort of gathering for Growing Up in Malta

them. There was a lot of interest in and we decided to do a full blow convention.”

At this point it might be fair to ask what a con is. “A comic con is a convention which celebrates the whole comics culture,” is Le Galle’s response when asked about the con itself. “It doesn’t include only comics but also movies, table top gaming, video gaming, Cos play, there’s even music that is purely dedicated to this culture. We invite guests from abroad to do talks. In the first comic con we had five, then seven in the second one. This year we’re looking to bring ten.”

“Then there are the local creators. Each one has a table so that they can exhibit their material and, at the same time, it puts the creator in touch with his audience. We always put up stands for Playstation and Xbox to allow people to play and have competitions.”

“For kids we have workshops that are specifically aimed at them. We always have a workshop on each day where kids are split into age categories and there are artists - both Maltese and foreign - who Summer 2011 - Issue 14

guide them on how to draw comics. They teach them who to draw and how to link everything together. And, I have to say, the kids love this.”

“We encourage parents of children like this to bring them along. As long as there’s a guardian with them, they’re more than welcome.”

In the context of this magazine, this final point is perhaps particularly poignant.

In truth, in the previous edition of the convention there has always been a lot of focus on getting children interested.

The work to get more people, specifically children, more interested in this culture isn’t limited to the annual event that is the Malta Comic Con.

“For us, we see being able to get to the children as being extremely important.”

And, in this respect, there has been some progress. “Last year we had an eight year old boy who was the youngest creator at the Comic Con. What happened is that his mother had seen us on a television show promoting the event and she got in touch because her son was very much into drawing comics.”

“We invited him to come along, set up a table for him and he really enjoyed himself.

As for us, we were impressed that not only did he draw but he did so in comic format so much that we did an exhibition of his work.”

“We also love to to go to schools to educate. So what we do is find art teachers who are into the subject and they invite us to do a workshop during one of their lectures.”

“I’ve been involved in loads of scenes: I’ve played guitar in a band and I’ve written plays. However, I’ve always maintained that in Malta we abhor creativity. It is our job to foster it. If you go to the USA or even England, comics are part of the curriculum. You can get a degree or a masters in comics.”

“Our job is to expand the local scene as much as possible. We have to educate about the culture, which is ultimately an entertaining culture, but also one that you can learn from. Recently there’s even been a trend to publish classic novels in the form of graphic novels which have proved to be really popular.”

So they would in Malta, probably, were they widely available.

As Chris later admits, “the problem of accessibility is a big one” and, with very few Maltese outlets selling any form of comic, children do not have as much exposure to such books.

This is a huge obstacle, but not an insurmountable one. The key, ironically, lies with the parents. Tell them what the benefits are, show them how the children will learn (and have fun) and you’re likely to see an increase in the popularity of such books.

A Comical Education First off, what is a comic? And why is it different from a graphic novel?

Let’s start with the obvious: what unites a comic and a graphic novel is the fact that both tell their stories primarily through sequential illustrations and text. Yet, whereas graphic novels tend to cover one story in its entirety, comics tell only part of a story. Physically, comics tend to be thinner than graphic novels that are more similar to books.

Secondly, why so much interest in comics? The answer is rather simple: they can be of huge help to any parent, but in particular to those whose children struggle to read.

For a good number of children reading is a chore, something that they are forced to do as part of their studies. Eventually, they come to dread the prospect of being faced with a book in which there is page after page full of text. When that child suffers from ADHD, then reading can become next to impossible.

Comics take out that tedium. Details of what is going on are portrayed through the images rather than words and this adds vivacity to the act of reading. They can enjoy not only the story but also lose themselves in the drawings, their colours, the details in the background, the expressions on the character’s faces.

There is also the psychological element that plays a huge part. Traditional literature relies on words to explain what is happening and this can mean drawn out paragraphs which can require a significant effort to get through. If you’re someone who doesn’t like to read, this can seem like torture.

But when you’re faced with a comic you can easily read through a page and this boosts your morale: the faster you go through a page, the more encouraged you are to keep on reading.

The lesson here, however, isn’t that kids reading of traditional novels should be scrapped in favour of comics. What it does mean is that children should be taught to enjoy reading if we really expect them to keep on reading for the fun of it, rather than because they have to. Comics can be an excellent way to achieve this.

Parents to Be The Summer is on it’s way… You are a family for the first time and you’re looking forward to the first holiday with your new baby. Here are some tips to keep the stress levels down during the first trip for new parents and baby.

In the first few months after your baby’s birth, you might prefer to stay at home, but, when your baby reaches 3 months of age, he or she is a pretty good candidate for travel.

For newborns, a full tummy, clean nappy and a comfortable place to have a good sleep are necessary.

If your baby is breastfed, traveling becomes much easier for you, because additional preparation for food is not required. However, there are certain important steps and safety tips that you need to consider while travelling with newborn babies.

You might prefer night flights - Flying at night will help your child to sleep during the flight. It will also ensure you to get some rest on flight as well.

In our opinon, try to avoid day time journeys or flights tor busy holiday times.

When taking a flight that has a lot of empty seats, ask the flight attendants if you can move to a seat that is more comfortable for you and your baby. Additionally,

You might be able to get more comfortable.

A collapsible buggy is carried free of charge on most operated flights. You may keep the buggy until you get to the aircraft steps. It will then be stowed in the aircraft hold, and will be delivered to you with your baggage upon arrival at your destination.Some airlines allow you, for extra comfort, to purchase an extra seat. You will then have the option to carry an approved car-seat on board of the aircraft to be used by your infant during the flight.

Pregnancy should be all about celebrating your body and your love. Cut down on caffeine - excessive consumption of caffeine can be linked with miscarriage

•

Cut out alcoholic beverages - replace your glass of wine with carbonated water or sparkling fruit juices

•

Avoid raw or runny eggs - these will carry the threat of salmonella, however hard boiled eggs can be a good source of protein. (Watch out for chocolate mousse!)

These are just a few of the things to avoid during your pregnancy and your health care professional will be able to give you the latest available advice.

Nutrition Here are some ideas of how you can make an interesting drink for your child during the hot summer Season:

Prune Juice: • •

Melt one spoon of strained prunes into 100ml warm water and mix well until the prunes melt thoroughly.

You can serve this drink both warm as well as cold.

Prunes help the constipated child.

Since the hot season is here, we have to make sure that our children drink enough to compensate for the amount of liquids lost due to the high temperatures. Children require much more water in their diet, per volume, than adults.

Fruit Ice Lollies: Pour baby juices into ice lollies shapes and put them in the freezer till they are thoroughly frozen.

Water is the most important element in the human body. Its functions can be simply described as follows:

The above can be served as a refreshing snack, which provides your child with the required liquids and extra vitamins and nutrients.

Iced Tea: Melt 2 – 4 Sachets of Orange & Lemon Camomile sachets for babies in a jug with water. Place in the fridge and serve cold.

The above will help you get the child accustomed to drinks with low levels of sugars and nonfizzy drinks.

Dehydration Dehydration is a serious, yet usually avoidable problem. When the body does not have enough water to function, it may start shutting vital functions down. Thirst is the first sign of dehydration, but a person can be dehydrated without feeling thirsty, especially a child if s/he is busy playing and ignoring his bodily needs. Other signs of dehydration include dry skin, constipation and dizziness. The urine should run clear; deep yellow urine often indicates dehydration.

One of the most frustrating aspects of autism is the breakdown in communication. Children with autism struggle with the complexity of spoken language.

Sign language creates an avenue of communication that strengthens speech and language development.

Sign language provides numerous benefits for children with autism, such as: •

Stimulation of speech and language development.

Visual stimulation provided by sign language activates the same centres in the brain that are activated by speech.

Many signs are iconic, meaning they are gestures that are visually associated to the object they refer to. These visual associations are easier for children with autism. Sign language acts as a bridge to speech and language by “turning on” areas of the brain that are inactive due to the breakdown in spoken language.

•

Reduction of negative social behaviours.

Children with autism typically display negative social behaviours such as tantrums, anxiety and aggression. These behaviours are intensified when the child cannot communicate basic needs and wants. Sign language offers access to communication and can ease the frustration that a child with autism feels.

• Increase in social interaction.

Sign language provides a way for children with autism to express themselves. Expressive and receptive language skills are the building blocks for social interactions. Children that are able to express themselves are more likely to seek out social interactions!

Development of cognitive structures.

Sign language supports development of cognitive structures that are important for speech and language.

Communication through sign language helps to establish connections in the brain that are necessary for encoding language. Encoding language early is the key to learning, and learning is the key to success.

Sign language is a wonderful tool for parents, educators and families of children with autism While there are many advantages for using sign language, there are also a few disadvantages: •

Sign language is a visual mode of communication and requires the ability to focus. In many cases, children with autism have attention deficits. In severe cases, attention deficits may prevent sign language from being advantageous to children with autism.

•

Unfortunately, sign language - depending on where it’s used (i.e. geographical location) - is not always a well-known accepted form of communication. Although sign language may be beneficial to the child with autism, it may isolate that child from interaction with people who do not know or learn sign language. Luckily, it’s easy enough to teach others close in your child’s life a few simple signs to use and recognize.

Autism affects each child in a unique way and as a result the benefits are also unique to each child. In severe cases, sign language may not provide additional communication benefit to children with autism. However, the fact that it may provide benefit offers hope and blessings to countless families.

The recently set up Literacy Room has been designed to benefit the children attending the school. Moving away from a traditional classroom style and creating Jungle Wonderland - a Haven for Reading and Creativity. An environment where children can feel relaxed in a virtual jungle, conducive to animated and innovative literary activities, proving to be one of the most popular places in the school while helping the youngsters to experience how much fun reading can be. The room is transmitting the concept that reading is an all day and night activity – an activity that places children on the path to think and form their own ideas about the many different experiences and situations – real or imagined - they meet through the lives of the characters encountered within the pages of the books they read “It is my belief, as head of school, that it is the school’s responsibility to harness the energy and creativity of all students that enables them to meet the challenges of today. “ Marie Louise Farrugia Emily Buchwald: “Children are made readers in the laps of their parents’, and appeal to all parents to support the school’s efforts by encouraging their children to read at home”.

Joseph Farrugia, the artist who created the wonderful murals, explained to us how appealing he had found it to create a

‘Jungle Wonderland’ for the reading room.

“The murals deliberately include animals and fauna from different parts of the world who would never meet under normal circumstances (e.g. the tiger and the gorilla). Yet these creatures co-exist peacefully in the paintings. The reason for this is that the murals create an enclosed environment for the children, and it is the pupils themselves that complete the setting of a ‘Jungle Wonderland’ or a ‘Golden Age’ through their presence in this paradise.” Joseph Farrugia Farrugia went on to share with us a special memory rediscovered as he worked on the creation.

“When I was three years old, Nannu Rafel used to stop to admire an old tree on our Sunday walk from Cospicua to Kalkara. He used to hold my hand and, staring at the massive trunk of this tree, with its gnarled contortions, we used to identify shapes of jungle animals – a crocodile, an elephant, a lion and many others. I realise now that this experience must have been the seminal influence (followed by others) that infused in me a compulsion to draw and paint throughout my life. I hope that this work will similarly inspire the children to think, to fantasise, and to create.” Joseph Farrugia.

A final word to parents. Encourage your children to read.

Lead by example. Make sure that books find a space in your home and do make time to read with your children. This will improve their literacy skills, develop their imagination and creativity while setting aside a special “you and them” time which is so essential for parent and child bonding.

Out of School Care

Over the past years we have witnessed an increased need for out of school care. This is due to the changing needs and expectations of parents and their children. In the past 15 years, there’s been an gradual increase in the provision of out of school care, which we distinguish as childcare and after-school care. Childcare refers to the pre-school years whilst after-school care caters for school-age children.

Why Childcare?

Nowdays, early childhood education is considered to be a crucial phase in a person’s development and can be considered as the basis for a successful future. An earlier start to a child’s educational journey in a safe and caring environment paves the way to a better life. Government believes that this country merits

a strong investment in this sector and whilst the childcare centres help to increase the participation of women in the labour market they also offer children the possibilty to develop in a healthy way. Thus, Government is committed to offer a childcare service of the highest quality, which is affordable to parents and helps them to strike a balance between their careers and family life.

Many families opt for childcare services for various reasons, such as working hours, health issues and others. The Foundation for Educational Services (FES) is providing child care services through ‘SmartKids’ and other centres.

The main aim of the centres is to offer a personalised service of quality care for all children, especially those at risk of social exclusion.

The service provision is based on the principle of educare. This means that FES childcare centres sustain that each child is an individual and all are special. The programme focuses on the various areas of child development (social, emotional, physical, intellectual, communication and creativity). We believe that children learn best through play. Thus we ensure that we offer a program which, is balanced and includes a wide variety of play activities that are used as tools to stimulate learning in a modern, safe and fully equipped environment.

Another important principle is that of creating a home environment away from home. Besides learning to develop in a group setting, children have the necessary freedom to follow their interests. The aim of the service is to help children to reach their potential.

Last but not least, we appreciate the fact that if we work together with the parents/guardians such potential is more likely to be reached. For this reason, parents/guardians are always welcome to the centres to discuss and plan, together with childcare staff, the child’s goals to fulfil their needs.

Growing Up in Malta

Education Within the Maltese context, there is a need to provide a child and family-friendly facility to meet the care needs of children whose parents’ work or educational timetables are incompatible with school timetables. To fully address the gaps between school hours and the parents’ timetables, such an after school service is required to provide for the care needs of children before school starts in the morning, and after school finishes in the afternoon.

FES believes that after-school services that keep children safe, inspire them to learn and help working families are essential services for today’s families. The Foundation started providing a subsidised, fee paying after-school service in October 2009 with the aim to provide a service for school-age children outside of normal school hours, where the same children attend the facilities on a regular basis and access to the service is clearly defined by agreement with parents and guardians.

The centres follow the National Standards of Child Day Care Facilities (2006). Currently the service is being offered in the following localities: • Smartkids Birgu • Il-Bejta Childcare Centre, Bormla • Smartkids Qawra • Smartkids B’Kara • Id-Denfil Childcare Centre, Siġġiewi • Il-Merill Childcare Centre, Pembroke • Il-Bebbuxu Childcare Centre, Sta Venera FES Childcare Centres offer services to all children and families but give priority to the following: • Children aged between 3 months and 3 years.

• Children who would benefit from spending time in the centre due to family circumstances.

• Children whose parents would need respite due to serious problems (e.g. health problems).

• Children of single parents, especially those who choose to follow a course or decide to start working to improve their financial situation.

Children who have developmental delays (e.g. communication needs) and need more individual attention before starting kindergarten.

Children who live within the locality or other College localities.

Children whose parents work within or close to the locality.

What is After School Care?

After-school care or school-age childcare as it is often referred to in European countries is a newer concept for Maltese society but has been widespread in its provision throughout much of Europe for many years. The European Commission Network on Childcare described School Age Childcare services as “services which take over the responsibility for children when school is over but parents are not available – whether because they are working or for other reasons.”

The service – Klabb 3-16 – is open to all schoolage children attending any school (State, Church, and Independent). During their time at the Klabb, children can do their homework and participate in organised activities.

Qualified teachers assist with homework whilst playworkers are responsible for organising educational and fun activities, such as physical activities, cooking sessions, story-telling, arts and crafts. Klabb 3-16 service is offered during most school holidays, including summer.

Currently there are three Centres – in B’Kara, Fgura and Mosta - and there are plans to open more centres. In July 2011, a fourth centre will open at the Żurrieq Primary School and in October 2011 FES is planning to open a fifth centre at the Marsascala Primary School, depending on demand for the service.

Literature on after-school services indicates that regular, sustained participation in after-school services of sufficient quality is likely to generate positive benefits for children. These include educational, developmental, preventive and cultural benefits.

FES focuses on providing quality after-school services which have beneficial outcomes both for children and their families. FES remains committed to continue providing this service and to ensure that the service becomes accessible to more children and their families.

This year`s programme once again proudly carries the stamp of Project aware and Aware Kids, where kids will be participating in various international underwater environment protection programs; becoming superheroes of the underwater world by joining thousands of aware kids around the globe in protecting all underwater creatures great and small.

At San Anton Summer Club, a Merlin Libary story teller will be enchanting the little ones with animated story-telling and puppetry each week, whilst participants will benefit from a full Ministages or Stagecoach session each week, which consists of Drama, Singing and Dance.

Zebbug Tennis Club will once again be providing on site Mini-Tennis Sessions for our younger club members in our shady grounds. This will ensure that our kids will maintain their physical activity whilst learning a new sport.

Children in class based groups will also be taken on excursions. “ Fun on the Farm” an opportunity to experience rural life on a farm in neighbouring Manikata, including animal interaction and a fruit picnic., Hands-on pottery, Cinema and Bowling, Underwater Safari and an opportunity to star in their own action movie are just some of the exciting activities planned.

Education The National Curriculum Framework:

Ensuring that All Children Succeed On the 17th of May 2011, a new milestone was reached along the road to educational excellence in our country. A draft National Curriculum Framework was launched for extensive consultation by all stakeholders and with all members of civil society.

The process of reviewing and updating the National Curriculum was launched in March 2008 and completed in July 2010. It included representatives from the Directorates of Education, the Faculty of Education, the MATSEC Examinations Board, and Church and Independent schools.

The draft document has been refined following feedback received by invitation from curriculum experts from the Ministry of Education in New Zealand and Learning and Teaching Scotland. This curriculum review stems from Part II of the Education (Amendments) Act, 2006 which puts the onus on the Directorate for Quality and Standards for updating the National Curriculum Framework, implementing it as well as reviewing the implementation process at regular intervals. The draft curriculum framework is presented in a set of 4 consultation documents, namely: •

Document 1: The Executive Summary

Document 2: The National Curriculum Framework - Rationale and Components - This document includes a detailed introduction to the theoretical background against which the proposals of the national curriculum framework were conceptualised. It also includes the aims and principles that underpin the framework as well as implications for teaching, learning and evaluation.

Document 3: The National Curriculum Framework in Practice - The Early Years, the Primary Years and the Secondary Years - This document presents details of how the national curriculum framework envisages the learning programme to be offered to children and young people in the early years, the primary years and the secondary years. This document focuses on the application of the framework in schools and colleges.

Document 4: The National Curriculum Framework - The Way Forward - This document summarises the recommendations of the national curriculum framework and examines the implications of such recommendations. The document presents ideas about the management of change which underpin the consultation and implementation strategies the framework would like to promote. In turn, the consultation and implementation strategies presented are based on an understanding of a change management process.

In essence, the updated national curriculum framework promotes: . the development of lifelong learners who are engaged and

responsible citizens, and active in the economy. the support for all learners to achieve and succeed, whatever their backgrounds, needs and aptitudes. . a clear focus in colleges and schools on meeting the needs of all learners through increased curricular autonomy.

4. the creation of active, inclusive learning communities which put learning and learners at the heart of all that they do and are accountable to their stakeholders.

5. seamless progression through the early, primary and secondary years in the skills and competences required for lifelong learning.

6. learning which is active, personalised, relevant, and purposeful.

7. learning that emphasises the application of knowledge and skills in different contexts and settings as well as breadth of knowledge and depth of understanding.

8. a curriculum framework that focuses on learning areas, creating links and synergies across traditional subjects.

9. assessment and evaluation which use information and feedback formatively to inform planning for improvement.

0. cycles of quality assurance and evaluation which recognise that continuous professional learning is an essential part of educational practice. .

Alongside the draft national curriculum framework, a vision for science education in Malta was developed by stakeholders from the University of Malta, the MATSEC Examinations Board and the three education sectors.

The process of consultation, which is itself a three-phrased process, starts with the publication and dissemination of this draft document.

All educators, parents, students and society stakeholders are invited to participate actively in this consultation process, so that the final approved document will be a true expression of our hopes and aspirations for our children and our country.

It used to be that kids hid their comics behind their text books to fool teachers about what they were actually reading. Whether that is still the case or not, I don’t know - do kids really fear their teachers that much any more? - but there really isn’t the need for them to do so..

Comics - known also as graphic novels in their longer form - it turns out can be of great help in getting children to read. There are various studies that debunk the myth that comics hinder academic development and plenty more that show how they can help reluctant readers.

With the illustrations providing the context that can help get to the meaning of the text, comics are not only fun but also a good way to improve language (or even help learn a second one).

Of course, care still need to be taken not only to get age appropriate graphic novels but also ones that have interesting stories.

What follows is a list that does exactly that.

Owly - Andy Runton (2 - 5) It is impossible not to like this book about a kind young owl (obviously!) eager to make friends and do good deeds to everyone around it. Life for Owly is never dull especially when it is with its companions Wormy and the chipmunk Scampy as they get into a number of adventures where, regardless of what happens, it never looses its faith in the goodness of the world.

Benny and Penny - Geoffrey Hayes (4 - 9) This series of books about two sibling mice whose lifes are full of bickering, taunting but ultimately love for each other. The stories are fun and there are a lot of lessons to be had but what I truly like about these books are the illustrations that are drawn in a style that is reminiscent of the old-time picture books.

Otto’s Orange Day - Jay Lynch and Frank Cammuso (4 - 9) If you, like me, have kids who always want to eat the same things and dress the same clothes then this is the book for them. When Otto the Cat meets a magical geenie, his first wish is for the whole world to turn his favourite colour : orange. Soon, however, he realises that just because it is his favourite colour it doesn’t mean that it should go on everything.

Adventures In Cartooning - James Sturm (6 - 12) Whilst reading comics can be great fun, so too is drawing them and if your child feels the urge to do so then this the book to help them do so. Not, it is important to note, that this is a to-do book but rather because it gives them a great insight to the world of cartooning and helps them overcome whatever blocks they might have in doing so (such as not being good at drawing). Not to be overlooked is the story within the book that deals about an eager knight, a sweet-toothed horse, and a magic elf hunting down a gum-chewing dragon.

BookReviews Johnny Boo - James Kochalka (9 - 12) Johnny Boo and his friend Squiggle are two young ghosts who are always debating about one thing or another. This is a fun series loaded with good messages about friendship, kindness and how too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Plus there’s the added bonus of instances where your child (and you!) can yell ‘Boo’ or ‘EEK EEK EEK’!

Stinky - Eleanor Davis (9 - 12) Stinky is a monster who is happy to live in his smelly swamp along with his pet toad Wartbelly and some other friendly animals. The kids who live in a village nearby are, for him, yucky because they take baths and eat things like apples.

So, when a boy invades his swamp and builds a tree house, he obviously tries to scare him away.

Nothing works, however, because this kid actually likes swamps and the two eventually end up making friends with each other.

The Secret Science Alliance and the Copycat Crook Eleanor Davis (8 - 14) The basic concept of this book isn’t too original: Julian Calendar is a bright 11 year old who moves to a new school and is determined to make friends, even if this means playing dumb. Yet, despite his best attempts, he fails at disguising how clever he is although he still manages to make a couple of friends who, like him, are natural scientists. Together, the three of them form The Secret Science Alliance, complete with an underground lair chock full of marvellous inventions, and they set out to create the most wonderful things they can imagine.

The Good Neighbors: Book One Kin by Holly Black (13 - 18) Holly Black, the author of this series, is an established fantasy novel writer who attained prominence through her co-authoring the Spiderwick Chronicles book that was eventually turned into a movie. The Good Neighbor follows broadly similar themes in that it deals with young people being forced to make difficult choices in a magical world that includes faeries which, unlike popular myth, aren’t very friendly. The story centres round Rue Silver who, upon her mother’s disappearance, starts noticing strange things and people which eventually push her to look into her parents’ past.

Knights of the Lunch Table - Frank Cammuso (9 - 12) A series that re-imagines the tales of King Arthur where Camelot is a school and Arthur a student who has the special ability to open a mysterious locker that no one else can. Older readers will enjoy the subtle manner with which Cammuso has fitted in the legendary characters of Arthurian tales - Mr Merlyn is a weird but nice science teacher - but for the uninitiated these are simply fun and fantastical stories laced with good messages.

Raven’s Gate by Anthony Horowitz (13 - 18) The theme where an orphaned child discovers that he has magical powers is hardly an original one (Superman anyone?) yet Anthony Horowitz puts enough twists here to present a story that is fresh, interesting and keeps delivering surprises till the final scenes. The story centres around Matt Freeman, a fourteen year old boy who is sent to live in the countryside rather than being put in a juvenile prison only to find that he is at the centre of a plot to open a gate that will allow through dark beings that survive on human misery.

Happy Parents, Happy Kids

...thanks to ‘Kids in Company’ Growing Up in Malta met up with Joanna and Nadya, founders of the nanny and babysitting agency Kids in Company. Set up to help alleviate some of the stress of parenthood.

We asked Joanna, what was your initial motivation behind setting up Kids in Company?

My first son was born in September 2008 and only 1 year and 8 months later my little one was born. Nothing under the sun could really compare to the joy of parenthood, but there are countless difficulties as well. One of the major challenges I had to overcome, like any other parent, was to learn how to juggle my life in order to see to all my responsibilities. In Malta we are lucky enough to be surrounded by family and friends, who are very willing to lend a helping hand. Then again family and friends have their own responsabilities to see to. Parents and in-laws nowadays remain pretty active in society and therefore expecting them to take on too much with our little ones as well, in my opinion, is not always the best and fairest option.

I too would rely on my mother or sister to help me with the kids, but my sister has three of her own. My mother is a grandma of five and even though she does help us alot with the kids, I still believe it is unfair to rely entirely on her, not to mention that I beleive that having worked hard to bring us

up, it is now her turn to sit back, relax and enjoy life and time with her grandsons. This encouraged me to seek the right person. Qualified, experienced, responsable, honest ...the list was endless and to top it all up, a person who was reliable and available whenever I needed. Most parent friends of mine, were pretty much stuck in my same situation and that is how the idea of Kids In Company came about. Rather that looking for one person, we created a team of lovely ladies.

Do you see changes in Malta that qualify a need in this type of business as opposed to several years ago?

Definitely yes and the list of reasons is endless. As already mentioned, grandparents are more active in society. Women lead a more independent lifestyle and therefore whether for financial reasons or career aspirations, more are choosing to work.

How would families proceed if they felt that they could benefit from using your service?

The process is rather simple. Having expressed interest, we first meet the client in order to discuss the request and the service required.

We asked Nadya, as the person responsible for recruitment of candidates, as a potential customer how could you reassure me that all possible checks have been carried out on a possible candidate?

Once the ideal candidate is selected all pertaining documents are shown to the parent(s). This includes qualifications, medical certificate and police conduct.

Looking back, it wasn’t a particularly healthy habit. Growing up, from an early age my dinners would be accompanied with a comic from a stack that someone had given us that I would read as I ate. It was often juvenile stuff – the Beano or the Dandy – and it got to a point where I knew every one of them by heart. And still I kept going through them.

Later on, I would task anyone who I knew was going to Italy to get me a copy of the latest Paperino edition or would do a little squeal of delight every time the local stationer stocked a new copy of the World War II themed Commando comic. I still recall my joy at coming across an Asterix graphical novel at the public library and how I read through it over and over again.

Comics were my first portal to the world of books. It is through them that I fell in love with reading; they were the ones that lit my passion for the published word. From them I graduated to the Enid Blyton’s children books that seemed to be the only ones the local library stocked for kids my age and then on to every book I could lay my hands on.

Yet I also recall being told off for reading comics

and how they would do nothing for my vocabulary. They will make you lazy, I was told, and you won’t want to read normal books. Judging by how much I read today, and the fact in itself that I’m writing in this magazine would indicate that I’ve managed to build enough of my vocabulary, reading those comics didn’t hinder at all.

Indeed, it was exactly the opposite. They showed me that reading was fun, they taught me how to follow a story and they boosted my imagination. Often, when I’m reading or writing, I think back to those dinners with a comic besides me that laid the foundation for everything.

Thankfully, my kids love books and have tried to learn to read from a very early age. For them, a trip to the library is akin to a visit to the sweetshop, such is the excitement that it generates. But I realise that I’m among the lucky ones. Just as much as I am aware that this could all change as soon as they’re given the first school text book which they have to read for their curriculum. Nothing can suck the joy out of something like being forced into doing it.

So I’m already looking for ways to keep them interested and, if the lessons of my childhood are anything to go by, then comics and graphic novels are the perfect solution. They’ve definitely loved the ones I’ve gotten them so far which is always a joy for me. ...Just as long as they don’t read them during dinner...

When we are gone...

As a parent of young children I am not particularly worried about them being alone when my wife and I become old and pass away. It’s not that I do not think about my own mortality or care about their future but I am somewhat confident that over the coming years we will equip our children with the tools to be able to take care of themselves in adulthood.

Unfortunately this is not the case for many parents of children with learning or profound disabilities. The overarching concern I hear from many parents whose children follow our special programmes is that they are worried how their children will cope as adults. All parents want their children to grow up and lead as independent a life as possible; a life with meaning and in happiness. Today, many parents are already worried by the lack of resources available for supported living, even though their children are still young.

As suggested by some recent research overseas, we are still not aware of the extent of the problem these parents face. “Disabled people under Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities have an equal

right to live in the community with choice equal to others.

Governments are obligated to take appropriate measures to facilitate the enjoyment of their right and their full inclusion and participation in the community. Under the Article, disabled people must have the opportunity to choose their place of residence where and with whom they live on an equal basis with others and are not obliged to live in a particular living arrangement. These rights and government obligations to fulfill them are still little known by the public.

Currently, disabled people do not have real choice over where they live and who they live with due to the lack of alternative community living options and accessible housing.�

The majority of children and adults with learning disabilities have the potential to live independently and with the right support, should live in the community. The model that would be favoured by most parents is the grouping of three to six people in accommodation situated within the community, with 24hr support and on-call expertise. This model can be cost effective because resources are shared between the group, however it is far more costly than institutional care, primarily because of the staff to client ratios.

Obviously, the greater the skills of the people in the house, the less dependent they will be on specialist care. They will be better at caring for themselves, sharing responsibility of the house and leading a meaningful life. A meaningful life here requires that individuals are free to make their own choices, express their thoughts and emotions and be included in their communities.

The Inspire team works very hard to give our children and adults the preparation that will help increase their independence, in order to help them cope with supported living in groups. We work closely with their parents to make sure that they encourage their children to practice these skills at home so they become confident and self-reliant. This is often quite difficult for the parents; I recall one parent in particular recounting how scared she was finally

including enjoying the freedom to make mistakes, is presented as a significant prerequisite to the traditional living goals of independence and integration.

Parents of children with a learning disability are in a very difficult situation.

Supported living requires a lot of financial resources and expertise. Those who can afford it may not have the human resources available to provide the care. Those that own their property may not have the liquidity to provide the livein support. The more severe the disability, the greater the resources required.

Community supported living is not the solution that everyone can aspire to. Those who require more dedicated support may require residential care.

Unfortunately there are practically no openings for such live-in solutions at the moment with all the current facilities full to capacity. Residential care also needs to be looked at in more detail with particular attention to the activities that are carried out during the day. If we do believe that meaningful existence is paramount for individuals with more profound needs, then we need to make sure that the residential care homes have enough expertise, staff and equipment to achieve this. Ultimately, engaging in community activities, whether in residential care or community living, is what will make all the difference. We are social beings and need to be around Summer 2011 - Issue 14

other people. Participating in social activities, feeling part of a community and fostering friendships are key aspects of living a quality life.

Another aspect that parents face is ensuring the financial stability of their children in the future. The legal frameworks and administration required for parents to leave their inheritance to their children are being set up so that their needs are catered for in the future.

Trusts and other forms of legal solutions are already available; however the main problem we encounter is the availability of accessible housing, expert care and support.

There are examples of 18-year-olds with a physical disability who are forced to live in elderly residential care due to the lack of live-in resources needed to stay at home. You can agree that a nursing home is no place for an 18 year old. This example highlights the importance of proper provision. It is useless to have the funds if the resources are not available.

Being in control of one’s own life,

We are all concerned about our children’s welfare, but many of us are lucky in that we have friends and family who would step in if we met an untimely exit from this world. If our children had very diverse and complex needs, would we still have this peace of mind?

It is important that we are aware of these issues and discuss them. There are organisations like Inspire that are training individuals with as many skills as possible so they are equipped to live as independently as possible. The state and the church are providing both residential and some community supported living; however the current requirement is far greater than current provision can cater for. This is a problem that is only going to become bigger and more complex.

Organic food Organic refers to the methods with which agricultural products (both plant and animal) are grown and processed prior to human consumption.

Organic food

by Prof. Victor Grech MD, is grown in PhD, FRCPCH, MRCP(UK), DCH, CLJ Consultant healthy soil so Paediatrician as to have a healthy product that resists natural resist pests and diseases. Organic farming prohibits the use of toxic and persistent chemicals in favor of natural practices such as crop rotation, cover crop planting, beneficial insect release and composting. Artificial fertilisers are not used. In the case of livestock, antibiotics and synthetic hormones are prohibited.

Organic production also prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms.

For these reasons, organic products tend to cost more than their conventional counterparts.

The theory behind organic practices is that many chemicals used in conventional, non-organic practice may adversely affect health. Children are most vulnerable to such chemicals as they are growing, have faster metabolisms and

potentially absorb more such chemicals.

Unfortunately, tests carried pesticides and other artificial chemicals used in agriculture have had their ‘acceptable safe level’ based on studies performed on fully grown adult men or non-human animal species, and by exposing these subjects to one chemical at a time. Not only may these levels be fallacious, but it has also been shown that exposure to chemicals in combination (in the way that we are usually exposed to them in everyday life) may exponentially increase health risks. Moreover, many currently approved pesticides and other chemicals were registered well before extensive research linked them to cancer and other diseases and indeed, 33% of all pesticides as considered as potentially cancercausing, in sufficient concentrations.

It is also important, in general, to accustom children, from an early age, to a healthy daily five meal plan. This should consist of a cereal for breakfast, and cereals, as a meal, should be only given once a day, at breakfast. This should be followed by a fruit in midmorning, a proper meal for lunch that includes vegetables and some form of meat or chicken or rabbit or fish, another fruit in mid afternoon, and another full meal with vegetables etc in the evening. Any snacks taken in between should be healthy, with

as little fat and salt as possible, and small enough not to diminish appetite for the next meal.Unfortunately, many parents struggle to feed their children ‘healthy’ foods as they always seem to prefer junk food.This is because parents allow children to develop those tendencies from a very young age, and the body naturally loves salt and fat, as we all know.

Children should therefore be introduced to wholesome and health-promoting organic foods before the introduction of fat, salt and sugar-laden foods such as pizzas, soft drinks, doughnuts, etc.

These foods not only influence taste buds, but they also have an addictive quality. However, when one regularly eats wholesome and nutritious foods, one does not miss unhealthy junk good.

These suggestions may be helpful: • If you are making changes towards a healthier diet for your children, do so gradually. This applies to both solid foods and beverages.

• Give them a variety of organic foods to try.

• Let them have the healthy versions of some snacks, for example organic fruit and muesli/bars and other organic food as this prevents boredom.

• Be a role model, lead by example.
