AUTUMN / WINTER 2024
Grove Vale Ceramics is a specialist ceramics gallery in East Dulwich, London, which opened its doors in 2020. The gallery was set up by makers Amanda-Sue Rope and Lise Herud Braten, and offers a carefully curated selection of work by nine established ceramic artists who also participate in running the gallery. In essence, we offer a beautiful retail gallery space, whilst allowing you to buy work directly from the makers.
We are delighted to introduce our AUTUMN EDIT catalogue, a curated overview of each maker’s style and selection, with many of the items available immediately through our website
The EDITS offer an introduction into each maker’s unique collection, and to what is on offer in the gallery at any time. We welcome enquiries about other styles, colours and sizes too, and all the makers can work to commission should you have something more specific in mind, just get in touch to discuss your requirements.
The emphasis of the gallery is to show mainly decorative and sculptural works, with a small additional selection of highly individual functional ware. The curation ensures a wide selection of styles that sit together in perfect harmony, each maker’s work complimenting the others and offering an easy selection process for interiors, personal collections and gifts alike.
The gallery opening hours are Thursday to Saturday 10-6, Sunday 10-3 and other times by prior arrangement. We are also very happy to send images of available works or offer viewings by video call.
Hope to see you in East Dulwich, and enjoy our AUTUMN EDIT

THE GALLERY MAKERS

PETER BLACK
Peter is interested in contrasts, exploring traditional forms and detail, but salt glazed and with mark making that evokes the turning, the softness and spinning of the clay on the wheel. The banding on his pots is particularly rewarding, suggesting on the one hand support, protection, safety and security, but at other times perhaps a constraint, confinement or caging.
LISE HERUD BRATEN
Lise’s primary interests lie in creating highly textured and natural, organic forms, with references to details in nature and the urban environment. Memories of growing up in a rugged landscape in Norway inform both shapes and mark-making, imbuing the pieces with a sense of place and history, of time spent exposed and weathered by the natural elements.
JANE CAIRNS
Jane’s work is about recognising a quiet beauty in the ordinary, the unnoticed and the overlooked. Living in the city this is often found in apparently insignificant details of the built environment and the urban edgelands – the sculptural qualities of abandoned industrial objects, weathered surfaces marked with wear, traces of things gone.
Using processes and materials that allow for an element of chance, her ceramics play with a balance of unexpected variance and creative control.

ARJAN VAN DAL
Colour and form are the celebrated elements in Arjan’s work. The white porcelain is his canvas that is pgimented and shaped, mainly on the potter’s wheel. His work plays with the idea of the manufactured though formed with his own hands. Subtle details uncover the handmade nature and colour and form create playfulness with a delicate touch.
JESS FLORENCE
Having spent much of her childhood on the South Coast, Jess takes inspiration from microscopic forms occurring within nature; in particular sea coral and Radiolaria. Each piece combines techniques from slip casting to throwing off the hump and the final stage is carefully applying her intricate, marine inspired designs to the clay surface..
SUE GUNN
The Earth Collection is inspired by the shifting landscape of the world. High fired porcelain is combined with fractured and bubbled glazes which evoke visions of parched and crumbled earth, lava flows and coastal erosion. Combining the sculptural with a functional aesthetic, these hybrid forms can be used as holders for candles and tea lights.

PAUL JAMES
Paul’s work focuses on the simplicity of the raw material, revealing the natural beauty of the clay body. There is a purity to the forms that are often dissected and reassembled creating movement and seams running through the work. The final stage of waxing and polishing brings the natural surfaces to life.
JODE PANKHURST
Jode’s playful sculptures hint at objects that sit between manmade and organic matter, often evoking sea-worn items you might find whilst beach combing. Using everything from sea-glass to hag-stones as her starting point, collated families of abstracted forms are then built in stoneware. Paying homage to the varied treasure that washes up on the strand line, her forms are glazed in soothing finishes that invite touch.
AMANDA-SUE ROPE
Combining working at the wheel with hand-building Amanda-Sue creates constructed forms in red and white stoneware clay. Inspired by geometry and the richness of the built environment, recent work has focused on themes of stacking and assembling component thrown forms to create hybrid, architectonic vessels with rhythmic textured surfaces.
