Top 10 Winter Driving Tips 1.Fit winter tyres. You are six times more likely to have an accident between October and March. The special tread compound and extra rubber in a winter tyre means that it does not become as brittle as your summer tyre when it freezes below 7 degrees. Combined with wider treads, this means that the tyre can grip the road better so that skidding and aquaplaning happen less. At 20 miles per hour a winter tyre will stop 11 metres shorter than your summer tyre will on an icy road. This could be the difference between killing a pedestrian and driving safely home without incident.

The biggest cause of accidents are driver behaviour and attitudes, especially the tendency we all have to overestimate our driving abilities and to downplay the possibility that we might be next for an accident. Failing to prepare your vehicle for winter because of this misplaced confidence could have major consequences. Fitting winter tyres need not be costly as you can store your summer tyres in your garage to be refitted in spring. This will mean no waste and that the cost of tyres will be no greater over time. Even if you don’t get winter tyres, have your summer tyres checked. Winter driving means that tyres should have no less than 3mm remaining tread regardless of their type.

2. Always carry a survival pack in the car, including food, water and a blanket. Nonperishable foods such as nuts and chocolate not only keep well but are excellent for surviving in cold weather. The pack should include extra warm clothes, gloves, scarves, reflective vest or armbands, an overcoat and appropriate flat shoes in case you have to walk for help in the snow or ice. Think about buying shoe grips when you are next in a filling station.

3. Prepare your phone - Ensure your phone battery is fully charged and that you have an in-car charger at all times. Put vital phone numbers on your phone such as your local mechanic, vehicle recovery service, the A.A. , RAC or a friend or relative that is likely to come to your assistance if you get into trouble. Write the numbers down on a piece of paper and keep them in the car in case you are stranded, your phone dies and you have to use someone else’s phone to get help.

4. Put a shovel and some sack cloth or carpet in your boot - in case you need to dig yourself out of trouble. Sack cloth, old carpet pieces or an old towel can be very useful for getting grip under a wheel in the ice to get you out of a rut.

5. Have your car battery checked - Always think ahead about being stranded.

Batteries have to work harder in the cold so make sure they are fit for purpose so that you will be able to start anywhere.

6. Fill up with screen wash - Clean windscreens externally are a major safety factor. The screen wash prevents the water well from freezing.

7. Have your coolant checked - Antifreeze protects your engine from low temperatures.

8. Have your air conditioning system serviced - This is essential for demisting so that you have good visibility at the start of your journey. Demist your windscreen from the inside before you move off. Do not be tempted to drive with poor visibility as it is easy to hit people when you cannot see out properly.

9. Adjust your driving style to the conditions - To judge how far you should stay behind the car in front use the age old technique as you travel along of picking a visual marker up ahead of the vehicle in front (such as a lamppost or a road sign). As the tail end of the vehicle in front passes that marker, repeat in to yourself “Only a fool breaks the two second rule”. That takes two seconds. The front of your car should not pass that visual marker before you have finished saying the phrase. When you are on a dry road you only need that two second gap so say the phrase once. In wet conditions you need four seconds of stopping distance so you need to say the phrase twice before your car passes the visual marker. When it is icy you need ten seconds of stopping distance so make sure you can say the rhyme five times before the front of your car passes the visual marker. If you reach the marker before you have finished saying the phrase you need to slow down because you are already in the throes of an accident waiting to happen. In law you are responsible if you go into the back of a vehicle.

Editorial With encouragement like that, it was no accident that Frances began her career in the local four piece “Burn Folk” and quickly shot to fame through TV talent shows such as Opportunity Knocks and Name that Tune. This propelled her to performances at the London Palladium and ultimately to represent Ireland, coming fifth in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with the first ever Irish girl band Sheeba. Trailblazers like Frances opened the way and inspired local girls like Nadine Coyle to aspire to international stardom.

The cultural organisers have done us one big favour though and that was to get us to realise just how much talent lay dormant and unsung in the people of the city. We have only now realised that our friend of many years has a brother who is a concert pianist in New York or our quiet neighbour is the cousin of a world renowned saxophone player in London, in demand by all the world’s most respected orchestras. How many of the schoolchildren who were friends with Frances’s children realised that their friend’s modest, personable and unaffected mother was the one who first crossed the frontier that made girl bands possible.

We have surprised ourselves this year by these gradual realisations of who we are. Perhaps the cultural aversion to self-deprecation and the dislike of boasting has not served us too well if it has meant that our sons and daughters tend to hide their light under a bushel. The enjoyment of the year has helped us all to realise that it is OK to exalt and applaud talent and that there is no shame in that.

Everyone is talking about what the legacy of the City of Culture will be. The answer is that we now realise that the city already had a cultural legacy long before the professional cultural organisers came along – and will still have it when they are gone.

The ease with which the city was able, at the drop of a hat, to produce the highest calibre of dancers, singers, play rights, musicians, actors and artists of all ages and backgrounds, shows that the City of Culture year only tapped into what was already there. We took it for granted before, believing that people in every town must sing dance and play together the way we do, but it is not so. This city has always produced world class performers. An example of how unique this is, can be seen from the unrivalled record of success the city has had in producing Eurovision Song Contest winners and near winners. No other town in Europe has ever come anywhere near matching the never ending winning streak of maiden city musicians.

This comes from generations of singers and songwriters faithfully and enthusiastically practising their craft, first among the multitudes of children in the city competing in the annual Feís, and then by trudging the highways and byways of Ireland and Britain as members of the teenage bands that seem to have sprung spontaneously from every street corner for many generations. Joseph Locke, Phil Coulter, Dana, Johnny Logan’s father and Frances Campbell to only name a few, all served their time in this community apprenticeship and made sure the city was admired over the generations when the “Derry Air” drifted tunefully across Europe.

Now we see how important to the psyche of this town artistic expression has always been. You cannot reduce an assessment of the City of Culture to how much money was made. In our songs and drama we evoke folk memories of our childhood at the Feís or Saturday drama class, the evening out listening to the many pick up bands in the pub or the songs our granny used to sing to us as we clung to her knee.

Above all, culture in the town is something we have always done together and which is perhaps the key to helping us be more together if it teaches us to acknowledge and listen to each other. This beautiful new age of culture and togetherness is as old and familiar as it is new and exciting. The mellowed and gentle voice of Frances is the perfect expression of that tradition.

Long live the City of Culture.

As a gentle reminder of the musical pedigree that the city enjoyed before talk of the City of Culture, Frances Campbell has returned with her album “Beautiful Age”. Frances is the perfect example of how the local talent pool has been carefully nurtured by generations of proud, adoring and encouraging parents and grandparents.

Her grandfather James McKane of Lecky Road was a noted singer who made a point of singing to his children and making the moments very special by dedicating one special song to each of his youngsters. Frances’s mother Molly passed the baton to her own children by singing to them when they were young, fine tuning their musical ears especially to her favourite Doris Day song “Secret Love”. Frances pays tribute to that loving encouragement and the many times her mother accompanied her to endless rehearsals and on the road when singing professionally, by her heartfelt rendition of the song in Beautiful Age.

There is only one thing more painful than having a baby - not being able to have one!

It is estimated that 1 in 6 couples in Northern Ireland struggle to conceive a child naturally. When getting pregnant takes longer than you first expected, it can quickly take over your life. Infertility is extremely difficult to cope with emotionally, and it is easy to get caught up in a whirlpool of sadness and obsession.

Maybe you find yourself surrounded by friends, family and work colleagues who are having babies. Dealing with this can be difficult, heartbreaking and stressful. You probably find that you are avoiding social events where there are babies or children and your friendships and relationships with family and colleagues starts to suffer. You can quickly feel lonely and isolated and may not even recognise yourself as the person you used to be.

Taking care of your emotions may be one of the most valuable things you can do so try to make your mental health an equal priority alongside the practical steps to becoming pregnant. Infertility is ranked among the 3 most stressful things to go through, along with bereavement and divorce. It is a deeply distressing illness, touching every aspect of a person’s life. It places an enormous strain on relationships and can cause huge financial stress as fertility treatment (outside the one NHS treatment cycle available in NI) can cost thousands of pounds per cycle.

Infertility Network UK is the leading charity that provides compassionate support and information for anyone struggling to conceive. The charity has a very strong presence in Northern Ireland and is currently running a series of ‘Think Positive’ workshops for those living in the North West.

Research has shown that those who attend support groups or go to fertility counselling cope better with the stress of infertility. Building up your coping skills is important: Infertility is emotionally overwhelming and it is vital to know some coping strategies and to understand the difference between sadness and depression. The workshop on depression will help you to recognise when your mood is affecting how you cope with everyday living.

Coming to a support group or speaking to a fertility counselor will help to address the best ways of coping for you. The ‘Think Positive” workshops will provide advice on caring for your relationships and the value of seeking out fertility counselling, and also cover practical information on how alternative therapies such as fertility yoga & reflexology may reduce stress levels to enhance physical and emotional well-being.

According to professors Robert West and Saul Shiffman, the answer lies in the strategy you use. You are four times more likely to succeed at quitting smoking for good if you combine medication with “behavioural support”. Taking medication without counselling support or being counselled without medication are nowhere near as effective as the two methods combined.

You have to make the decision yourself Don’t be waiting for a health scare or a telling off from your doctor before you decide to quit. Your doctor is not in charge of your health – you are! It is up to you alone to seek out help before it is too late. If you can talk to your doctor great! However, the chemist selling you the nicotine patch, spray or gum is easier to talk to without an appointment and more likely to have the time to give you the counselling support than your doctor is.

Sweeney’s chemists on the Strand Road for example recently won a “social commitment” award at the Pharmacy in Focus Awards earlier this year, partly because of their commitment to helping people give up smoking by providing quit smoking clinics in the commu-

nity. Although the benefit of getting advice and support along with medication is clear, the shocking thing is that Irish studies have shown that doctors are less likely to bother asking older patients to quit and will leave them to their own devices. This is in spite of the evidence that even quitting over the age of 60 can improve your breathing, reduce the chance of a heart attack and add a good three years to your life. Doctors can’t help you until you decide to help yourself first and ask for the help.

Beat the Craving by knowing what to expect Timeline after finishing your last cigarette- After: a) 20 minutes - your heart rate returns to normal; b) 2 hours – blood pressure is near normal but withdrawal symptoms begin –

craving, drowsiness or sleeplessness, hunger and anxiety; c) 12 hours – blood oxygen returns to normal; d) 48 hours - your sense of smell and taste comes back; e)

3 days – Nicotine out of the body and you need to combat nicotine withdrawal symptoms – headache, nausea and cramps. Be aware that this will be your hard est time so use all your support - will power, family, friends, and the tips given to you by your pharmacy team to help you through this difficult phase. Understand that withdrawal symptoms are only temporary. Although they may last a month, your average craving is usually 3-10 minutes long. Learn to distract yourself just at that critical moment and you can beat it!

f) 2-3 weeks - withdrawal symptoms start to disappear and you can exercise and

breathe more easily; g)

3 months - Most relapses occur in the first 3 months after quitting, when some thing, such as a particularly stressful event occurs unexpectedly. These are the times when people reach for tobacco automatically because they associate it with relaxation. This can be very difficult to prepare for, so it’s especially important to recognise it if it does happen;

h) 1-9 months - your lungs have mostly repaired themselves and your coughs and

chest infections get less and less; i) 1 year - your chance of a heart Attack is cut in half; j) 5-15 years - your chance of a stroke is the same as a non-smoker; k) 10 years - your chance of getting many cancers is cut in half; l) 15 years - your chance of a heart attack is the same as a non-smoker.

What can you do for yourself?

1. Make the decision that you are going to quit, set a target date and declare your

intention to someone who will support you – that makes it harder for you to back out; 2.

Stop kidding yourself that you can’t help it because you are addicted. The truth is that addiction to chemicals is only half the problem and that can be sorted with nicotine patches, gums and sprays etc. from your chemist. The other half of the problem is your bad mental habits which you are totally in control of;

3. Find a chemist that will give you backup advice and provide the medication; 4.

Identify the triggers that get you to crave cigarettes and avoid them. Put a strategy in place to distract yourself when cravings start. If you always smoke in the pub or at lunch time, don’t go to the pub and take a walk at lunchtime. The moment a craving strikes try these tips:

•

Delay – you only need to fight it for 3 minutes. Always have a distraction to hand that you can use to occupy your mind – a game break instead of a smoke break – on line solitaire perhaps or bring some cards with you?

•

Chew – have gum to hand – especially gums to help you stop smoking;

•

Never fool yourself by saying you will have “just one” – Drill it into your head – “the first cigarette is the most dangerous one”;

•

Do something physical – take a five minute walk;

•

Contact someone who is behind you on quitting – talk about other things on the phone or facebook until the craving passes;

•

Go into a relaxation routine – take ten deep breaths;

5. Re-enforce your own behaviour every day by looking at the chart at the bottom

of this page to remind yourself of the reasons for quitting. Cut out the chart and

pin it to the bathroom mirror and look at it when you get up every day.

6. Start a modest exercise program, drink more fluids, get plenty of rest, and avoid fatigue. If you are already taking part in an exercise program, remember quitting

smoking will improve the results that you get from your exercise. Just walking thirty

minutes a day is a good start.

7. Think of a reward to give yourself at the end of each day you have stayed off

the cigarettes. Make it something small, simple and enjoyable (that does not mean a

cigarette!). Remember, what gets rewarded gets done.

8.

If you don’t get there the first time don’t despair. Even though 40% of people do succeed on their first attempt, many of the 60% who have to try again often succeed so on their second or third attempt because of what they learned about themselves and their lifestyles when they made their first attempt. You haven’t wasted your time.

Quitting smoking is the single most important thing a smoker can do to improve their own health and the health of those around them.

As people age, their sense of happiness and wellbeing goes up from between 4% to 11 % when they take part in informal and formal classes. By comparison, the effect is so powerful that it is enough to overcome the reduced feeling of wellbeing that comes from, fo r example, being unemployed. Taking part in pleasurable learning activities however has a similarly beneficial effect on people from all walks of life and circumstances, even if they did not have a habit of doing courses before. It is never too late to start learning! So says a recent study by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills. In a new experiment for the Waterside Women’s Centre under the Big Lottery’s Reaching Out Connecting Older Peoples Programme, they are going out to places in the community where older people congregate to provide them with stimulating new learning experiences.

Crochet, Arts & Crafts, Appliqué, Art, Flower Arranging, Reminiscence, Yoga and Armchair Aerobics Diamond & Platinum Club The Waterside Women’s Centre encourages women to pursue their own development and make choices about their own lives at any age. Having received five year funding from the National Lottery to develop and implement the “Diamond and Platinum Club” project, there is plenty of scope to ensure the scheme can make a difference to the lives of older people living in the Waterside area of the city.

The Waterside Women’s Centre has delivered community based training and education courses for women for 19 years, giving them valuable expertise in overcoming the many barriers women face in taking up formal or informal self-improvement. Although their focus in the past has been more geared to responding to the needs of younger women with children, the increased number of older women in their 60’s and 70’s using the centre has prompted this programme aimed at addressing the practicalities of helping them to access the courses relevant to their changing needs and aspirations in life. The plan arose after going out into the community and talking to women in the more senior age bracket and taking on board their expressed wishes and concerns about mobility and health. The message was clear – “if you bring the courses to us we are eager and ready to learn!”

The Diamond and Platinum Club became a reality earlier this year and the Waterside Women’s Centre are now delivering activities for older people in Foyle Fold, Daleview Nursing Home, Longfield Nursing Home and Ard Cluan Residential Home, in addition to activities for older women taking place in the Waterside Women’s Centre. The trainers have taken on board the message from people that they want “learning for pleasure, seeing and doing rather than formal learning”. Therefore, courses in Crochet, Arts & Crafts, Appliqué, Art, Flower Arranging, Reminiscence, Yoga and Armchair Aerobics have featured in the timetable. The aim is to decrease the social isolation and vulnerability experienced by many older people and to promote lifelong learning. Working together in groups encourages good social interaction and enhances self confidence and self esteem. Participation in itself is a measurement of success therefore no one is ever made to feel that their contribution is in anyway less than anyone else. It’s not like school at all!

We have every hope that the Diamond and Platinum Club will be a resounding success story for the Centre and also for those who will benefit from participating in the activities they have to offer.

“Talking to Our Babies” Website launched by Greater Shantallow Area Partnership If a child does not understand what is being said they cannot engage socially or understand what a parent or teacher is trying to tell them. When a child is late to pick up language they miss out on the basic building blocks of learning at school. As they fall behind, it can get harder to catch up and they can be left behind as children are streamed for ability within the education system. This can have a cumulative effect with the child just failing to qualify at each turning point in their education. The result can be a lifetime of underachievement, leading to possible financial detriment and unhappiness Talking to our Babies aims to enable and encourage everybody to have a deeper understanding of how children aged 0-3 years develop language so that the natural enthusiasm of parents and teachers to support toddlers can be even more effectively channelled into helping them develop language skills. The project does this through community communication campaigns, training and its new website www.talkingtoourbabies.com

help children to enjoy playing with language and to learn about the pattern and rhythms in language. Pattern recognition is one of the primary measures of intelligence and it can be learned. They also help to develop memory and listening skills in a fun, feel good environment where they can form a warm bond with their parent which gives them a positive attitude to learning from that point forward. The whole community was involved with the project with 14 community play groups and nursery schools coming together to create a CD of the children’s favourite rhymes and join with families in a Nursery Rhyme Hunt and Nursery Rhyme Challenge.

When you smile, interact, listen, pretend, show, teach and support your child and share time and smiles together you build a bond of communication and love that lasts a life time. Research now also shows that this early engagement with children is critical in determining how well they achieve later on in life. As the main person available to teach your child in their first years of life you give them the essential foundation blocks for all learning, that is, how to listen, communicate, pay attention, understand, produce sounds and words and eventually to speak in sentences. Key to this learning is your enthusiasm, support and input.

Children learn by doing and interacting with others. The worst thing you could do is plonk your child in front of a TV or computer where they sit passively taking in whatever is thrown at them without any guidance. Without the feeling that you are paying attention to them children disengage and lose interest in inquiring about their surroundings. That warm feeling that comes from having a parent read a book with them or telling them a bed time story reassures the child that they have supportive company on their journey of discovery. The TV or games console is not an unpaid babysitter. Programmes on TV might reflect the parents entertainment interests rather than be aimed at helping the child to learn. A machine cannot motivate or encourage your child and the clear message sent to the child when they are abandoned this way is that their parents are not interested in them or engaging in learning activities with them – so why should they be interested in educational pursuits either?

However, there are some toys and gadgets that you can get your child that help you both to interact with each other and learn together. Here are some Christmas suggestions for toys which, with your support, may help your little baby to become a big chatterbox!

Wooden blocks; come in lots of colours and shapes. Initially baby can explore their texture and later you can build towers for them to knock down, and later still use them to create houses / walls for the farm etc. Talk about ‘higher’, ‘on the top’, ‘fall down’ and later how many do you need, can you find me a yellow brick etc.

Farm Animals; young babies will explore their texture, shape and colour, The Reading Bedtime Stories campaign, “Bedtime Story, Sleepy Fun”, promoted the use of stories at bedtime as an opportunity for supporting developing communication skills, interaction, bonding, reflection and discussion. Surprisingly, Littlewoods recently revealed in a survey that 91% of today’s parents were read bedtime stories when they were young, yet only 64% of parents now read to their children at all. More shockingly, a 2010 UK study reported that 55.7 percent of primary school teachers have taught children who have never been read a story.

The Talking to our Babies campaign aims to re-encourage parents to experience the magical moments between parent and child when, cuddled up and relaxed they can both enter a world of make believe in a book and leave the daily cares behind. This is a warm memory which will remain with a child (and their parent) for the rest of their lives. A list of really good books are suggested on the website which is the perfect place to start when you are thinking of what story you are going to share with your little one tonight.

The ‘More Talk Less TV, Too Much Screen Time’s Not Good for Me’ campaign focused on encouraging parents to consider how much screen time their children were having, whether watching the television, on computers, phones or games consoles. This screen time can have an adverse effect on your child’s developing communication skills. Television viewing is not beneficial in developing grammar or literacy skills as TV and computers are passive activities that do not enable or encourage the child to practice these skills through talking back and interacting as the child would do when learning through conversations with a parent. Research highlights the importance of the parent directing and limiting what the child watches and shows that children who watch with a parent perform better academically than those who watch alone. Even something as simple as having the TV switched off at meal times and play times creates the conditions for meaningful interaction between parents and children.

learn what the animals are and later what sounds they make and where they live etc. Older children will enjoy imaginative play as they bring the animals to life and you play together.

Art; crayons, chubby pencils, chubby felt tips, paint and chalk - all support communication, creativity and expression. You don’t need expensive paper; a roll of lining paper from decorating shops will last a long time! Or use the back of birthday cards or empty boxes! If your little one is ready to try gluing and sticking then ‘glue sticks’ can be expensive in the long term – pick up a tub of PVA (from a decorating / hardware shop again) and pour into empty yoghurt pots and use an old small paint brush ☺

Playdough; as your toddler gets older play dough can be great fun – you can make it together and talk about the ingredients, mixing and kneading. Then together talk about textures, shapes and colours as you create snails, cakes or whatever your imagination suggests! (Recipe; cup flour, cup of salt, cup of water and mix or try cooked play dough – lasts longer - 3 cups flour, 1.5 cups of salt, 6 teaspoons cream tartar, 3 cups of water, 3 tablespoons oil. Stir constantly over medium heat until a dough ball forms by pulling away from the sides. Knead dough until the texture matches play dough (1-2 minutes). Store in a plastic container.

different types of music, wind chimes, rattles, squeaky toys and shakers will all encourage baby to listen, nursery rhymes teach actions and words, encourage listening skills and sound lovely when sung by your child!

Dolls And Teddies; for babies and children offer endless possibilities for learning language – naming body parts, dressing them, helping them to sit on a chair or putting teddy to bed to name a few!

Books, Books And More Books; looking at pictures, learning names, finding items, listening to rhymes, sharing stories and talking about the characters will give your baby / child a love of books as well as stimulating their communication skills.

Dieting Myths about Fat Debunked?

Weight gain from sugar not fats Why do most people who try to lose weight find it very difficult and often put the weight back on some time later? What we eat may be more important than how much we eat because some believe that it is what we eat that causes us to ignore our bodily instincts and eat more. Many people are beginning to challenge the accepted wisdoms about weight loss that have been promoted over the past thirty years because the simple fact is that people in the West are just getting more and more out of shape in spite of all the dietary advice. Dr. Robert Lustig, paediatric endocrinologist at University of California San Francisco WATCH Clinic who runs the childhood obesity clinic there, says that we need to debunk some myths and re-examine what causes unhealthy weight gain to understand how to bring our bodies back into balance. His theory states:

Counting calories is not the best way to lose weight. Instead, choose the foods that increase your metabolic rate. You can eat yourself thin without going on binge diets, starving yourself or confining yourself to one food group exclusively such as protein or carbohydrate. “Calories in” does not equal “calories out”. Not all calories are created equal; your body metabolises calories from celery differently from the way it metabolises a Snicker bar. It is simplistic to say that losing weight is just about burning more energy through exercise or eating something with a lower calorie count to bring your energy equation back into balance. Some high calorie foods metabolise easily and some foods with low calorie value put on the weight. What are labelled as “diet” foods do not necessarily lead to weight loss and can have the opposite effect.

Sugar is the culprit for all times you tried to lose weight and failed. failed. Lep-

tin is a hormone produced by your fat cells that tells your brain you don’t want to eat any more. If we are all eating more now, one of the reasons is that our Leptin response is not working properly. The biochemical messaging system in our bodies has somehow been disrupted over the last 30 years. Dr Lustig blames soft drinks and fruit juice primarily but also other processed foods that have high fructose corn syrup added to them including many breakfast cereals, salad dressings, cheese spreads, breads, yogurts, jams, most fast foods and other foods.

Dietary fats are not the culprit in weight gain as everybody has assumed. Some dieticians now believe that eating the right kinds of dietary fat can actually help you lose fat. This does not include mostly man made trans-fats which Lustig confirms are dangerous. He welcomes the reduction in their consumption over the past 30 years. These fats are sometimes found in biscuits, cakes and fried foods. You need to eat the right fats to lose fats. The weight gain of most Americans in the past 30 years was caused by eating more of the wrong kinds of carbohydrates – not by eating more fat. The % of fat in US diets actually declined from 40% to 30% over thirty years as obesity rates rose. On the other hand refined carbohydrate intake in the form of soft drinks, fast food and fruit juices rose dramatically.

Dr Lustig contends that the myth that all fats were bad began with “The Seven Countries Study” by Ancel Keys which connected heart disease to fat consumption in 1970. He contends that the study was fatally flawed as it did not detect that it was the sugar which correlated with heart disease not the fat. The report failed to identify that some cholesterol is in the form of big light molecules that tend not to damage the blood vessels whilst other cholesterol is small and dense and gets under the edge of the surface of vein cells to cause damage and inflammation that can lead to heart and circulation problems.

Lustig believes that as a result of this misunderstanding we have all been misled into avoiding certain kinds of fats which are beneficial to our metabolism. Recent voices in the British Medical journal are also starting to question whether the “Seven Countries Study” has got it badly wrong about fat.

Other dieticians identify bad fats as hydrogenated oil, canola oils, vegetable oils, butter substitutes and margarine and the good fats as real butter, raw nuts (not salted or dry roasted), avocados, Coconut oils, eggs and olive oil. Eaten in moderation it is claimed that these “good fats” fats can be fat burners.

It is refined carbohydrates that are bad not complex carbohydrates. Bad carbohydrates come from Crisps, Pasta, Cereals, Crackers, bread and good carbohydrates come from Bread made from sprouted grains, spelt rice or coconut flour, non-wheat pasta, quinoa millet and amaranth. Most fruit and vegetables are good carbs because nature has put lots of fibre, vitamins and minerals where there is natural unrefined sugar to make it less likely to create fat. The lesson is eat raw unprocessed food when you can and avoid artificial sweeteners such as Sucralose, Saccharin or Aspartame. When the body does not recognise a substance as natural, it goes into defence mode because it is not expecting the foreign substance. This results in inflammation which causes the body to damage itself if it is constantly and unnaturally kept in this state of ready alert by the daily assault you inflict upon it by eating the wrong food.

Exercise is important in reducing weight not because it burns calories

but because it increases your metabolism and reduces stress which in turn lowers cortisol, a hormone which can encourage you to eat to excess when it is out of balance. Ludwig says that a strategy to lose weight by burning off calories by exercise alone is a fool’s errand because it is impractical to have meaningful long term results when it requires twenty minutes of hard exercise to burn off a single biscuit. Some dieticians estimate that weight loss is 20% about exercise and 80% about what you eat.

The overall advice is to get rid of all sugared liquids in the house – drink water instead, eat your carbohydrates with fibre, wait 20 minutes for second portions to give your body time to signal itself to stop and make your children earn TV or computer couch potato time by doing twenty minutes of exercise for each hour of TV they want to watch! Why your credit card could protect you from financial disaster.

The little known secret about how using your credit card could give you thousands of pounds worth of free consumer protection How often has the news been filled with stories of airlines, hotels, kitchen and window suppliers or car dealers going bust leaving those who bought from them out of pocket or with nobody to recover money from? People putting down deposits for weddings, foreign travel or home repairs can be particularly affected. Here’s how your credit card could actually be your flexible friend in a time of need.

If you buy something between the value of £100 and £30,000 your credit card company is as liable as the retailer you bought the item off to refund you if anything is wrong with your purchase. If the goods are not delivered, the retailer has misrepresented the goods or broken their contract by providing goods that are not fit for purpose or faulty, the credit card company must pay you back the whole amount – even if the retailer has gone bust in the meantime. This even applies if you only paid a deposit using your credit card and paid the rest using other methods. It also applies even if you closed your credit card account after you made the purchase. The protection also covers foreign transactions as well as goods bought online, by telephone or mail order for delivery to the UK from overseas. This means that you can have confidence when booking ahead in foreign hotels or purchasing items online from a foreign retailer you know little about. You can enforce the contract in the UK against your credit card company. You don’t have to wait until you have gone through a complaints process with the retailer first, you can claim the whole amount from the credit card straight away as the retailer and card company are each liable under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 to pay the whole amount.

Entity Agreement’ with the credit card company. Otherwise, the retailer can claim that it does not have a direct contract with the consumer. In addition, general credit arrangements or term loans from banks are not covered as they may not be directly and exclusively connected with the purchase of the specific item in dispute. Purchases of land are also excluded as are private transactions between individuals who are not traders. If you buy an item on Ebay from someone who makes an income out of trading on Ebay (as opposed to selling off their personal items) you may still be covered as the person could be classified as a trader.

The goods bought must also be for the direct benefit of the named card holder. For this reason it is a good idea when buying airline tickets to get each person in a group to pay with their own credit card so that they are definitely covered in the event of a flight cancellation. This problem even arises when an additional card holder is nominated by the main card holder on that card. If an item bought by an additional card holder is for the benefit of the main card holder (such as a family holiday) they may be covered, but if they buy a flight ticket for themselves and the main card holder does not benefit, the credit card company could potentially argue that such a purchase is not covered by the regulations.

Large purchases should therefore usually be made by the main card holder. It is also prudent when using your credit card to buy a gift for someone to ask the retailer to mark the fact that a payment for a particular item was a gift for a named person. In the event of the person needing to return the item, the credit card receipt and marked invoice can be produced to show that the purchase was made by the cardholder for the purpose of a gift, so preserving the right to claim against the credit card company.

a claim must generally be made within 120 days of purchase or the expected future delivery date. Apply to your own bank from which your payment came and they will retrieve the money from your supplier’s bank.

However, remember that credit cards can have a downside as they can charge high interest, so only get one if you can afford it. The best policy is only to use a credit card if you can pay back any money borrowed at the end of each month.

How to make an application.

When making a claim to the credit card company, write or ring and ask them for a section 75 claim form or simply write telling them that you are making a claim for a particular amount under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

Give details of the product, the retailer, what was wrong with the item and the dates involved. Enclose receipts proving purchase. If, within eight weeks after your application, the credit card company refuses to pay, ask for a “letter of deadlock” so that you can make a formal complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. If they have not replied or have refused after eight weeks, an application can be made to the Financial Ombudsman Service without a letter of deadlock

When does the protection not apply?

However, the legal protection does not apply to payment by cheque, cash or debit card (unless part of the payment was by credit card). If you paid for a car with a cheque for £15,000 you would not be covered by section 75. However, if you paid a deposit of £1,000 for the car by credit card and the rest by cheque, the credit card company would be liable for the full £15,000 if the transaction went wrong.

Furthermore, if you buy two items for £90 each putting a total of £180 on your credit card you would still not be covered as each item bought must be over £100 to qualify you for protection. You may not be covered if an online payment service such as Google Checkout or Paypal takes the money out of your credit card to pass it on to the retailer. You are only covered in this instance if the retailer has a ‘Commercial

Is there any protection with debit cards?

Visa, Mastercard and Amex international have internal rules that allow you to claim from the card company if your goods are faulty, not delivered, wrongly described, the supplier goes bust, there is a processing error on the transaction or if you have been defrauded. If you are getting a card you should check that this procedure – called “chargeback” is available on your card. You cannot take your complaint to court but the companies often pay up and you can report them to the Financial Ombudsman if they don’t. The cards covered include Visa debit, Mastercard debit, Visa Electron and Maestro debit. Prepaid Visa and Maestro are also covered. Grooming your puppy is a nice way to spend quality time together. It also allows you to monitor your dog by checking for cuts, bumps and tenderness.

Bath Time Tips It is good to train your dog to enjoy their bath as a puppy and deliberately manage the experience so that your pet remembers positive experiences around bath time. For example if a dog has a favourite treat or food, take the food to the bath area a few times and feed them there occasionally without putting them into the tub. Progressively do a little bit more grooming at the location each time this happens. After a few such occasions put them into a dry tub, rewarding them with some treats or food for letting this happen. Place a rubber mat or towel at the bottom to stop slipping as this can cause anxiety. Eventually, introduce them to a shallow, warm, but not hot bath. Make sure you choose the suitable dog shampoo for their hair type, taking care around their eyes. Do not use shampoo designed for people. Handled this way, a dog is less likely to run a mile when they know you are taking them to the place where the bath is and washing can be a fun experience for both the dog and owner.

Most people have left over potatoes, veg and stuffing this is great for using them up , and is good served hot or sliced and served cold for buffet or supper.

Ear Care If you wish to clean your puppy’s ears it is best to ask your vet or groomer on the best products and methods to do this.

Keep a check when they are scratching, shaking their head or rubbing their head along the floor this could indicate that they have ear mites and a vet should be consulted.

Dental Care It is important to let a vet see your dog’s teeth at least once a year but you should check their teeth at least once a week.

Damaged teeth and gums in dogs are the gateway for many diseases and infections into the body, just as it is with humans.

Look for swollen gums, bad breath, ulcers, chipped or broken teeth and make sure that the gum line fits around all the teeth. The earlier they are introduced to this routine the easier it will become.

Never use human toothpaste as the dog will swallow all the paste and the additives are unsuitable and unpleasant for the dog. Dental kits are available from your vet, in pet stores, online or at the dog groomers.

Nail Care

Please do not attempt to trim nails without proper advice from your vet or dog groomer as a bad experience could hurt the dog and put them off grooming for life. Use only nail trimmers for dogs. Introduce nail trimmers by gently touching and examining their paws often for a few sessions without actually cutting their nails. Pick a moment when the dog is relaxed before actually cutting nails.

What Vaccinations are needed to protect your cat, dog or rabbit from fatal diseases?

Dog & puppy vaccinations Vets recommend that your pet dog, cat or rabbit are routinely vaccinated in order to maintain its optimum level of health and prevent potentially fatal or infectious diseases. Vaccinations are a simple procedure carried out whilst you wait for your pet. Most are in an injection form, in the fold of the skin at the back of your pet’s neck. Pets generally will not feel this procedure.

Primary Vaccinations When puppies are born they are protected by antibodies from their mothers. However, protection declines as the puppy gets older and the antibodies begin to wear off. Vaccines solve the problem.

The pup needs two initial vaccinations in order to be fully immunised. At eight weeks of age (and when your puppy has been living in your house for at least one week), he/ she is old enough to start its vaccination course and receive its first vaccination. The puppy must receive its second vaccination two to four weeks after the date of the first. You must not allow this time frame to lapse.

Remember, a pup is not fully vaccinated until one week after its second vaccination and should not be walked or permitted to be around other dogs until this stage.

Booster

As with puppies, when kittens are born they receive antibodies against certain viruses from their mothers own immune system. It is important to wait until 8 weeks of age before vaccinating kittens, as before this time, the level antibodies will still be high and may destroy the vaccination before it has chance to work.

About 1-2 weeks after the second vaccination the levels of protection in the blood will be high enough to protect the kitten from feline viruses.

Boosters It is important to have your cat vaccinated every year, as the protection from the vaccines starts to wear off after this time.

Other vaccinations

Kennel Cough Kennel cough is an infectious disease causing a severe dry hacking cough and is easily transmitted between dogs with relatively close contact, or sharing the same airspace.

It can however be treated with antibiotics but often a long course may be needed to shift it fully. It is possible to vaccinate dogs against Kennel Cough. The vaccine is in the form of liquid, which is inserted into the dog’s nostril.

A vaccination expires after one year and as a result, the immunisation gained by last year’s vaccinations begins to wear off. A single booster vaccination acts as a “top up protection” against infectious diseases. Boosters should be done no more than one year apart. If your dog misses its annual booster the vet may decide it is a safer option to start its primary vaccination course over again.

Sometimes this is because people who do not want pets and who cannot care for them are given them as gifts for Christmas by well-meaning people. Green Dreamers have Fun at Hollybush School Hollybush School in Culmore recently installed their new solar panel array on their roof as a follow up to their award from Ashden for their amazing achievements in becoming an outstanding example of what a green school should be. Winner in the Primary School section of the Awards in 2013, Hollybush not only broke new ground by being the first school in Northern Ireland to win the coveted Ashden award but also gained international recognition as the Ashden awards are a prestigious international accolade well known for honouring groundbreaking green energy champions from all over the world.

By adopting a whole school approach to energy conservation and environmental care, Hollybush set itself apart from all the other schools in the competition. Together, caretakers, teachers, parents and pupils planned and coordinated a master plan that successfully raised the school from Band E to B on the Display Energy Certificate energy performance rating scheme within two years. The school was able to switch from increasingly expensive oil heating to an efficient biomass system in the form of a 99kW Austrian KWB wood pellet burning boiler that also eliminated inefficient electric heating in one of the classrooms. As a bonus, the electricity bill is also down 8% at a time of rising electricity prices. They were greatly assisted in this by Dr. John Gilliland OBE, native of the City and an internationally acknowledged leader in the field of biomass.

The pupils enthusiastically embraced the strategy with monitors being appointed to make sure doors and windows were closed, that taps were not left on and to tell teachers off if they left the lights on unnecessarily! Signs were put up everywhere to remind everyone of their responsibility to switch things off, high levels of re-cycling were achieved and low energy lighting was installed where feasible. One of the main rituals of the school day is the “shut down check” to ensure all lights and appliances are turned off before going home.

The judges at Asden were greatly impressed with the enthusiasm of the pupils which comes across in the special video they created to illustrate the achievements of the school to the Asden panel. Well done to everyone at Hollybush. Go online and check out – it’s a bit of fun.
