Go into any juice bar these days and you will see people taking their daily shot of wheatgrass juice. Take ordinary grass, squeeze it and drink the juice. That’s all.

Why then has the craze swept the globe?

Many claim that the juice cleans toxins from the body, strengthens the immune system, clears up respiratory problems and improves the digestive tract. Most of all, cancer survivors swear by the healing powers of wheatgrass. Local man Danny (Tam) McDonald of Dunaff has popularised the home growing of wheatgrass after going into remission from stomach cancer over seven years ago. He claims that daily wheatgrass has kept him well since then. Is there any foundation to these claims?

Nutritionally, a fluid ounce of wheatgrass has very little in it apart from 7% of your recommended daily dose of vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, magnesium, calcium and some iron. It is no more nutritious pound for pound than cabbage or broccoli. It has no fats, omega 3 fatty acids or protein and almost no carbohydrates. The benefit is thought to come more from the physical effect upon the body processes than from the nutrition itself. The 70 % chlorophyll content helps to prevent liver and colon cancers by attaching to and eliminating carcinogens through normal waste as chlorophyll does not absorb into the intestine according to Australian advocate of the drink, Dr. Chris Reynolds. An initial study in The Journal of Experimental and Clinical Cancer Research observed that an extract of wheatgrass seemed to contain two quinones which inhibit

cancer growth, boost the immune system and reduce the amount of chemotherapy required for cancer patients “in a broad spectrum of 32 human cancer cell lines”. As far back as 1937 scientists in the University of Wisconsin identified “the grass juice factor” as a growth stimulating nutritional agent beneficial to health in its own right distinct from the benefits of vitamins and minerals. There is no evidence of any adverse side effects of taking wheatgrass but anyone wishing to try it should always consult a qualified medical professional if being treated for any condition. Why do most of us eat too much when we want to lose weight even though we know that we should stop?

We all know we should exercise more, eat less and burn more calories than we consume. However, that does not help us get the willpower. How can you eat less without feeling hungry or going on an unappealing diet?

Cornell University have discovered that part of the willpower problem is that our minds play tricks on us when we think about eating. The first solution is to outwit your subconscious by playing visual tricks on yourself. The second trick is to take advantage of your conscious mind by “mindful eating” rather than by expecting yourself to constantly summon willpower from nowhere.

By taking control of your food thoughts this way you can eliminate that nagging craving for more that comes from the failure to recognise the signals from your body that you have had sufficient.

I found out about the Women’s centre in Guildhall Square through a friend.

I was 21years old and had just had a baby. I wanted to do things with him and enjoy spendi ng time with him. I was told about a project at the centre for young mothers and their babies . I signed up for some of the activities, attending swimming, messy play and Jo Jingles .

The project was fantastic at helping me spend quality time with my son and it increased my confidence as a parent.

Through this project I was made aware of another project within the centre for young women, called IPOD. I was able to take part in this due to the provision of free on-site childcare for my son. Part of the programme involved work around body image. I was part of a group of women who went on local radio, interviewed workers in clothes shops and facilitated a conference on International Women’s Day for young women in the city. I had previously been quite shy and lacked confidence after having a baby. The project enhanced my confidence, made me more self-aware and happy in my own skin. It gave me an opportunity to discover a lot about myself and make plans for the future.

I had my second child in 2013. I was able to take part in the mother and baby activities once again. I then enrolled and completed a Level 2 in Maths, whilst comple ting a youth work qualification outside the centre. My daughter was able to use the crèche while I completed the maths. Without childcare in place I would never have been able to get back into education.

My children have benefitted greatly from their time in the crèche. It improv ed their social interaction, their ability to play with other children and helped them becom e more independent.

The Women’s Centre has been a huge source of support for me over the years. It’s like another family. I have made lifelong friends and feel confident in my own abilitie s. I have been accepted unto the Certificate in Youth Work at University of Ulster, making me one step closer to fulfilling my dreams of becoming a youth worker.

The PROSPER programme delivers support activities, employability skills and qualifications to enable people who have their sights set on getting a job or looking for a job.

Power You Need For Change (PUNCH) is an initiative aimed at empowering young women in the 16-24 age group who are not in work, education or training. The project offers: Nail Art & Make Up Skills, Horse Care, Young Arts, PunchUrSize Driving Theory, Signposting & Listening Ear services.

Multi-Cultural Project / Crafting English - The multi-cultural women’s group meets weekly to exchange information and make connections among women who are new to the City. The programme delivers conversational language skills, arts and crafts and workshops on a range of issues identified by the group.

Child at the Centre (CATC) is a programme of joint activities and support for mothers and babies. The programme includes a listening ear service as well as: Baby Massage, Baby Yoga & Reflexology, Baby Aqua Swim, Relaxation for Kids, Arts & Crafts and Stay & Play.

Diploma in Combined Studies (Women’s Studies) - This foundation course is delivered at the Women’s Centre in partnership with NWRC and is a two year part time programme leading to a UU Diploma in Combined Studies. Once achieved you will have a recognised university entrance qualification Maths, English and I.T. Courses delivered by qualified tutors and leading to nationally recognised qualifications from basic entry level to level 2 – GCSE equivalent.

Adult Social Care – Level 1 Induction to Adult Social Care plus Level 2 Certificate in Adult Social Care Crafts & Skills Courses include: Garment Making, Traditional Crafts, Pattern Cutting & Fashion.

CPCAB Counselling qualifications at Levels 2 – 3 – 4 & 5. The Level 4 Diploma and the Level 5 qualification will count as units towards your Open University Degree in Counselling.

Other A Health Awareness Promotes Inclusion (HAPI) programme is being delivered in partnership with a local pharmacist. In addition this year we are delivering -Interpersonal Skills & Goal setting over 5 weeks, First Aid at Work & Paediatric First Aid.

Loan sharks are people or firms which illegally lend money without a licence from the Financial Conduct Authority (Part of the Bank of England).

They are not to be confused with licensed payday loan companies which have a Consumer Credit Licence and trade legally.

How do you know a lender is illegal?

A legal lender will provide you with a written credit agreement with their trading name and license number on it. If you do not get a written agreement it is certain that you are dealing with an illegal lender. If you do have a written document, check that the license number given is legitimate and has not expired. Contact the Financial Conduct Authority on 0800 111 6768 and check the Financial Services Register at http://www.fsa.gov.uk/register/home.do. Other tell-tale signs of an illegal lender are that they refuse to give you a written record of payments or tell you how much you owe or the interest rate charged. Illegal lenders often arbitrarily increase the balance you owe without your permission.

International students come to the Fountain The Cathedral Youth & Community Centre in the Fountain have partnered with Foyle Language Centre and the North West Academy in supporting International students visiting the city to learn languages. Italian Students Claudia & Martina (pictured) had a great time during their stay in the city helping Alan, Jeanette and Graham run the Summer Intervention Activities which included Fun Trips to Lurgybrack Farm, Days at the Beach including Castlerock & Portrush, Paintballing and canoeing at Creggan Country Park.

Heart palpitations, anxiety and bouts of crying are worrisome symptoms shared by thousands of teenagers, and parents, awaiting A-Level exam results. Although a fretful experience for many, it is important to remember that regardless of whether you get your required grades there are still lots of options available.

Contacting your college or University.

Some schools or colleges may ask you to collect your results in person; although a few exam boards allow you to access your grades electronically. It is important that you come prepared so bring a pen, notepad, copy of your personal statement, your AS results, calculator, the contact details of your firm and insurance choices, your mobile phone and a note of your UCAS personal ID. If you feel that you may not have fulfilled the criteria for your firm or insurance choice, pick up a copy of the Telegraph newspaper which exclusively lists the courses available on UCAS's clearing system.

If you got the results you need for your firm offer, then congratulations!

Regrettably, not everyone will get the grades needed to secure their firm or insurance choice of University. Academic results do not necessarily measure your intellect or ability, as Bill Gates, the richest man in the world and countless other high achievers can confirm. A level results can be a stepping stone in your career but there are many other ways to access learning opportunities if you work hard and persevere from this point forward.

Disappointing results may be a blessing in disguise as they give you the opportunity to reflect upon whether University is right for you at this moment in your life. As you no longer have to worry about the expense of college you are free to contemplate earning in a gap year or re-evaluating whether deep down you would prefer a different career path now that you have the choice. Alternatively, even successful candidates may ask if they may defer their University’s offer for a year. Whilst your University is not obliged to do so, most will be accommodating.

However, your chances of getting their agreement would be improved if you have persuasive justifications for deferment such as, for example, the chance to take advantage of an internship.

There are a variety of avenues available if you do not meet your grades; but just be careful that whichever route you opt for is something which you really want to pursue. Too often many young people have been pressurized to make hasty decisions which are regretted later. It may be advisable to talk to an adviser at your school or college to perhaps explore options such as repeating A-Levels

All in all, whatever happens this August, be it excited exclamations down the telephone to your Aunt Ann or a few fretful tears on your mum’s shoulder, things will be OK. You may detour off the route which you initially planned, but with the help of your peers, parents, teachers, advisers and services such as UCAS, you will get to where you need to be.

Beat the Car Dealer How to negotiate when buying a new car 1.

Before you go to the dealer research what car you want on the internet getting the price of new and used ones and relate values to the mileage if you are buying a used car. Also know exactly what you will get for your current vehicle and arrange to sell it privately. Get the details of an equivalent car in another marque so that you can ask questions comparing the two when talking to the dealer. This will make the dealer uncomfortable about the competition and anxious to do a deal with you from the start.

WHISK THE WATER OR CHICKEN BROTH WITH THE OYSTER SAUCE, SOY SAUCE, SALT, PEPPER AND CORNSTARCH 1 POUND MUNG BEAN SPROUTS AND WATER MIXTURE AND SET ASIDE. SOFTEN THE NOODLES BY PLACING THEM 2 BONELESS, SKINLESS CHICKEN BREASTS IN BOILING SALTED WATER. PLUNGE INTO COLD WATER TO STOP THE COOKING .MARINADE: PROCESS AND DRAIN THOROUGHLY. WASH ALL THE VEGETABLES AS NEEDED. CUT 1 TABLESPOON OYSTER SAUCE THE CELERY AND THE BOK CHOY INTO 1/2-INCH PIECES ON THE DIAGONAL. PEEL AND CHOP THE ONION. 1/4 CUP WATER OR CHICKEN STOCK DICE THE GREEN ONION. HEAT A WOK OR FRYING PAN OVER MEDIUM-HIGH TO 1 TABLESPOON OYSTER SAUCE HIGH HEAT. ADD 2 TABLESPOONS OIL. WHEN THE OIL IS HOT, ADD THE 1 TABLESPOON SOY SAUCE NOODLES. FRY IN BATCHES UNTIL GOLDEN. REMOVE THE NOODLES FROM THE SALT AND PEPPER, TO TASTE PAN.HEAT 2 TABLESPOONS OIL. ADD THE ONION AND THE MEAT. LET THE MEAT 1 TABLESPOON CORNSTARCH BROWN BRIEFLY, THEN STIR-FRY UNTIL THE REDNESS IS GONE AND THE MEAT IS 4 TABLESPOONS WATER NEARLY COOKED THROUGH. REMOVE THE COOKED MEAT AND ONION FROM .OTHER: THE PAN. COOK THE REST OF THE VEGETABLES SEPARATELY, EXCEPT FOR THE 1/2 POUND DRY NOODLES GREEN ONION, SEASONING EACH WITH A BIT OF SALT WHILE STIR-FRYING IF 2 MEDIUM RIBS CELERY DESIRED. WHEN COOKING THE BOK CHOY OR BROCCOLI, ADD 1/4 CUP OF 1 POUND BOK CHOY OR BROCCOLI WATER AND COVER WHILE COOKING. REMOVE EACH OF THE VEGETABLES FROM 1/2 POUND FRESH MUSHROOMS THE PAN WHEN FINISHED STIR-FRYING. ADD MORE OIL AS NEEDED. GIVE THE 1 RED BELL PEPPER SAUCE A QUICK STIR. ADD ALL THE INGREDIENTS BACK INTO THE WOK, MAKING 1/2 RED ONION A "WELL" IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOK FOR THE SAUCE. ADD THE SAUCE, 1 GREEN ONION (SCALLION, SPRING ONION) STIRRING QUICKLY TO THICKEN. MIX EVERYTHING TOGETHER. STIR IN THE VEGETABLE OIL FOR FRYING AND STIR-FRYING GREEN ONIONS. POUR THE COOKED VEGETABLE AND SAUCE MIXTURE ON TOP OF 1/4 CUP TOASTED SESAME SEEDS THE NOODLES.
