How to help your child improve their numeracy skills Establishing strong calculation skills, even at a basic level, will make all areas of maths much quicker and easier to grasp. The ability to calculate sums accurately in your child’s head can save them time in exams, but also in their general day to day life.

Here are some simple tips for ways to help improve your child’s mental maths skills:

Relate calculation to real life: Next time you are heading out for dinner, why not ask for some assistance in working out how much everyone’s meal has cost. Ask your child to divide the total by the number of people at the table (make it a bit easier for them by rounding up).

Take them to the supermarket: Supermarkets are

jam packed with maths waiting to happen. If you spot a 50% off deal, ask your child to tell you what the original price would have been. Do you need 12 eggs? Ask your child how many boxes of six you will have to buy achieve this. If you are buying fruit for the week and every member of the family has one apple a day, how many apples will you need to by to have enough to last until Saturday? It is key in this situation to keep the maths relatively simple, otherwise you risk putting your child off playing the game and losing their interest.

puzzles in newspapers or magazines, do them with your child to encourage them to develop an affinity with numbers.

Articulate when you are trying to work something out in your head so your child is more aware of how often you do this. Encourage them to help you if you are struggling to work out sums yourself and praise them for trying and for helping you.

Unfortunately, the most tried and tested way of improving numeracy skills is simply by doing more maths! Practice does make perfect when it comes to numbers, but encouraging your child to recognise calculations and mathematical principles in their everyday lives is going to encourage them to build up an awareness of maths and realise its importance.

Large numbers of people suffer from tooth wear without knowing it and unaware that it can be treated - a recent study found that 88% of adults in Northern Ireland had wear on their front teeth – this is notably higher than in the rest of the UK and can range from mild to severe.

Many people think that this toothwear is due to ageing but fortunately this is not the case and it can be prevented/slowed by identifying and removing the cause.

In the majority of cases, tooth wear is due mainly to the action of acids to dissolve the teeth. These acids can come either from your diet or from within your own body. The acids in your diet normally come from fizzy drinks (even diet versions) or a high intake of fruit (including smoothies).

It is advisable to reduce your intake of these foods and try to take them only at the same time as your main meals to reduce the impact. Acid naturally occurs within the stomach and can become an issue for toothwear as many people have acid reflux and experience heart burn, others however may have reflux and be unaware of it with the only sign being toothwear. Another significant cause we treat are those with bulimia. If you suffer from repeated acid reflux it is advisable to see your GP as they now have very effective treatments for this.

Other causes of tooth wear can be grinding and poor tooth

brushing technique. Grinding can be prevented from damaging your teeth by wearing a splint at night as this is when most grinding occurs.

While prevention is far better than cure it is often the case that the tooth wear has progressed to such a stage that treatment is necessary to protect the teeth from further damage or to restore the appearance of the teeth, this can be done in a manner that is very conservative of the remaining tooth with new advances in dentistry. The pictures below show 2 people who had their teeth restored in our clinic recently, by treating the toothwear the teeth are protected from further damage as well as restoring their appearance.

The treatment can be conservative and often painless as it may not require the use of drills or other invasive procedures and at times can be as straightforward as adding white filling material to replace the lost tooth structure.

A new bed for good health?

We spend one third of our lives in bed. Our skin is in contact with the mattress as we sweat and shed our skin throughout the night. Our body is manipulated into different postures by the mattress for hours on end every night and we breathe in whatever dust and bacteria accumulates in the bed with us over the years. If you ignore and make do with a worn out and overused bed, it can have a big impact on your health.

How do you know you need a new bed?

The Sleep Council suggests nine signs that you need a new bed: 1. Your bed and mattress are more than seven years old; 2. You wake up feeling unrefreshed, stiff or aching; 3. You or your partner constantly churn or turn in the bed; 4. You and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally when in the bed; 5. You had a better night’s sleep in a different bed; 6. Your mattress is misshapen or sagging; 7. Your mattress creaks when you move; 8. You can feel individual springs; 9. You would be ashamed of the appearance and stains if a stranger saw the bed with the sheets off.

If you decide to get rid of your old bed do not think you are doing yourself or others any favour by “recycling” it to the children or gifting it to friends or relatives.

Illnesses from an overused bed Four in ten of us have regular back pain which makes the support of a good bed critical to making sure waking hours are pain free.

Asthma, hay fever, flu and even food poisoning, can often be put down to the bacteria, dust mite droppings and viruses accumulated in the bedlinen and mattress. Salmonella and norovirus can last for some days in bed fabrics and can cause the spread of winter stomach bug and diarrhoea. If people in your home are mysteriously coming down with tummy bugs and flu or if skin rashes such as eczema keep appearing it could be that your home has toxic bed syndrome and you need to replace the bed.

Good Housekeeping Some of these problems can be reduced by good housekeeping. Take the plastic off new mattresses as it retains moisture and encourages dust mites; use a proper washable protective anti-allergy barrier fabric instead. The bedlinen should be washed at least once a week at 60 degrees centigrade or use an antibacterial laundry wash like Dettol if lower wash temperatures are used.

Wash your washing machine out with an anti-bacterial rinse every week to stop bedclothes being re-infected. Leave the bedclothes off the bed for at

least half an hour each morning and air the room to rid the bed of the heat and moisture which dust mites like. Regularly hoover the bed and mattress and any soft furnishings or carpets in the bedroom to remove dust and the eggs and excreta that dust mites leave. To prevent back pain, rotate and flip the mattress once a month so that it does not become moulded into a particular shape. Use an extra pillow along the line of your back or side to support your back. The extra pillow could also support your knee to keep the leg on the upper side as you sleep at the natural angle from your pelvis so that it does not twist your spine.

Unclean beds over seven years old can harbour dust mites that we cannot see.

They do not bite but the excreta they leave behind after eating flakes of skin on the bed can cause illness.

Correct sleeping posture:

If you sleep on your back put a pillow support under your knees to keep them bent. Make sure your kneck is not forced forward pointing your chin towards your chest.

If you lie on your side keep your head in a position where your spine is straight in line with the neck vertebrae.

Put a cushion between your knees to prevent your spine from twisting and to prevent blood clots and impediments to circulation.

Sleeping on your tummy is the worst posture. If you cannot avoid it put a pillow under your tummy to reduce the pressure on your spine.

Before Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet and Bill Gates and Steve Jobs got Microsoft and Apple going, they owed a debt of gratitude to a woman called Grace Hopper who learned how to use the world’s first programmable computer and was indispensable to making their innovations possible by pioneering a revolution in programming that made computers accessible to everyone.

Because of her accomplishments in computing she earned the name “Amazing Grace”. She was a teacher, businesswoman, inventor, leader and visionary who earned her place in the computing hall of fame in spite of the fact that she only saw her first computer at the age of thirty seven.

Hopper worked in Massachusetts on one of the first programmable computers in the world, the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator also known as the Harvard Mark I. Her gift for programming was manifest immediately. Although Hopper had great knowledge of computers and how they worked, she was also good with people. She brought together seven government agencies and ten top computer manufacturers and convinced them to collaborate to make a common business language. As a result of this effort, COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language) became the first standard language mostly based on Hopper’s own text-based language FLOWMATIC. She developed a computer programme that translated human instructions into machine code that the computer could interpret. This translation programme is known as a compiler, and at the time, it

Grace Hopper was revolutionary. After the war she helped to develop UNIVAC I, the first commercial computer.

She imagined a future where computers are not just tools for elite scientists, but can be used by almost anyone. To achieve this, she organised conferences and published continually, helping to establish the open source culture that is still strong in the CODING community today.

Making a small claim without a solicitor If you think you have a legal claim against someone for something worth less than £3,000 you can make a claim directly through the small claims court yourself without using a solicitor. If the person you are claiming against does not fight the claim, you may get a default judgement without any court hearing. The person will either pay at that point or you can ask the Enforcement of Judgements Office to ask the sheriff to seize goods to the value on your behalf. If your claim is contested you will have to attend a fairly informal hearing at the County Court to explain your complaint and answer any counterargument from the person who is contesting the matter. Although Orders to pay are given, the Court can also make non-financial Orders such as an instruction to fix a fence or provide a substitute product.

What type of claims can you make?

You can claim for money you are owed, for the cost or replacement of faulty goods, for faulty workmanship or for damage done to your property. You cannot claim for road traffic accidents, libel or slander, personal injuries, claims regarding title to land, claims involving a legacy or annuity, claims in relation to the property of a marriage or any claim that has already been sent by the High Court to the County Court. Although the claim must be under £3,000 in value you can claim for a debt which is a larger amount if you agree in advance that you will not get more than the £3,000 limit. Alternatively, for sums up to £15,000 you can issue a Civil Bill with the help of your solicitor.

You cannot break your claim up into a number of smaller claims to keep each claim below £3,000 because the whole grievance must be heard at one hearing under one application. If you breach this rule the Court may not let you get your costs back from the losing party even if you win.

What are the risks and pitfalls?

You still have to pay a small fee to make the application to the court and you will only recover it if you win, as your costs may be added to any Order against the loser. On the other hand the person you claim against may put in a counterclaim against you if they reckon you owe them money, caused damage or need to put something right for them. If you lose the argument you could end up paying out to them and paying your costs and theirs.

It currently costs between £30 to £100 to submit a claim, depending on the amount of money you are claiming. The £100 fee is for any claim between £1,000 and £3,000.

If you win and the person will not pay you will have to pay a further fee to have the money collected by the Enforcement of Judgements Office. If they are successful you can claim these fees back too. If

the person who loses has no money or goods that can be seized, you could end up paying out fees and getting nothing back. After all, the Court just makes the Order for the loser to pay, you do not get money from the Court. The loser will have a County Court judgement against their name which could cause them difficulties when getting credit. However, if they successfully counterclaim against you, a County Court Judgement could be entered against your name.

grievance against to settle the matter privately. Write to them setting out what your claim is, the reason you think they are liable and the amount you want from them or the action you want them to take. You can present all correspondence as evidence. If that fails get an application form from www. courtsni.gov.uk or Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Trading Standards Office, the Court Office or your local advice centre. Issue the proceedings as instructed in the forms, to the Small Claims Court where either you or they live or conduct business. 3. Augmented reality dashboards will enable the car to identify a hazard ahead and project information on to the windscreen in real time pointing to it or directing the driver to swerve left or right as necessary. By enhancing vague images they can avoid accidents in the dark.

Mercedes are developing an airbag which deploys under the full length of the undercarriage of the car to give extra traction with the road when the car has to stop suddenly. 5. Energy storing and generating car panels. Only if these signals are ignored does the dog change from being passive to taking charge by being aggressive.

What Annoys Dogs?

• Do not disturb dogs that are eating or sleeping;

• Dropping their ears; • Crouching, wagging their tail low and turning over on their back;

• Don’t tease or chase a dog even if you know it and never try to take something away from it;

When the dog decides to go from passive signals to aggressive actions:

• Dogs do not like to be confined and cuddled the way humans do.
