‘Tuned In’ is an innovative and inspiring community based project which aims to promote a greater understanding in the community of people with learning disabilities. The project is designed to support young adults, aged 14 to 19 yrs, with a learning disability in making the transition from youth to adulthood so that they can develop into successful young adults. It is an educational intervention and social inclusion project which supports vulnerable young people reach their full potential through music, the creative and performance arts. The project will tackle issues such as lack of aspiration, social exclusion and loneliness which people with disabilities can sometimes need assistance with when they leave the education system.

The Big Lottery Reaching Out: Empowering Young People programme aims to help people to help themselves, so young people are involved in designing, developing and running the projects. Students get help two days per week over a period of two years providing them with the opportunity to complete accredited courses in music, drama, life skills and creative arts. These qualifications are pitched at a variety of levels to accommodate all

of the students depending on their ambitions and needs. A ‘Drop – In’ facility is operated one evening per week, enabling students and non-students to socialise in a relaxed, supervised environment.

Students also have the opportunity to organise and participate in a variety of musical and creative showcase events to increase the communities’ awareness and knowledge of people with a learning disability. Since the beginning of the ‘Tuned In Project’ in September, students have organised and supported a number of musical and artistic performances for both disabled and non-disabled people in the local community. These include: The Lenanshee Musical, Music Promise Showcase’s, Circle of Support Awareness and Information day, the St Patricks Day Carnival and our own ‘Tuned Out’ club night in St Columbs Hall.

The next big event is the ‘Trip to the

Trail’, a one day festival of music and interactive workshops that will be held up at the Playtrail on Friday 20th June from 10-2pm for 14-19 year olds. The project’s very own band, “The Plantin”, will headline the event with support coming from local acts and up and coming young talent.

What to do about depression?

Everyone can feel down sometimes, but we can only say we may be ill with depression when the low feeling persists and we feel hopeless or cannot cope with simple daily tasks or relationships. Anyone feeling like this should seek help from a doctor early on rather than hope that things will get better on their own. A doctor can diagnose the cause of the depression whether it is hereditary, due to physical illness or the associated pain or due to social, family or work experiences such as bereavement or bullying. The answers to these questions will determine whether medical intervention will solve the problem, whether changes in social circumstances would help or whether assistance in rationalising things that have happened to you are more appropriate. The doctor will also know whether monitoring is necessary in the minority of circumstances where suicide might be contemplated.

Depression can affect anyone at any time with one in four of us experiencing it in our lifetimes. At any one time, between 8-12% of the population are suffering from depression. Over half of those who suffer from depression will recover whilst the other half often recover for long periods and live happy and normal lives during times when they can cope with the affliction.

Symptoms of Depression You should seek an assessment for depression when you experience at least two of the following core symptoms for at least two weeks: • An unusually sad mood that does not go away; • Loss of enjoyment and interest in activities that used to be enjoyable; • Tiredness and lack of energy In addition, people who are depressed can have a range of other symptoms such as: • Loss of confidence in themselves or poor self-esteem; • Feeling guilty when they are not really at fault; • Wishing they were dead; • Difficulty making decisions and concentrating; • Moving more slowly or becoming agitated and unable to settle; • Having difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much; • Loss of interest in food or eating more than usual, leading to weight loss or weight gain.

How to defeat depression

Although there are things you can do to help yourself through depression they are not a substitute for seeking medical assistance and engaging in talk therapy with a suitably qualified person so that you can understand and come to terms with the illness. Additional actions you can take are: 1.

Look after a pet – thinking of the needs and welfare of others focuses your thoughts on something outside of your own mind and can be very therapeutic. It gives you a refreshing mental rest from the exhausting business of thinking about your own circumstances.

Take a quick ten minute walk. This generates the mood improving hormones serotonin and dopamine. Kill two birds with one stone and exercise with another person to reduce the loneliness that often accompanies depression.

Put yourself in a bright environment. You may suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) which can be overcome by exposing yourself to bright lights and sunshine. Could the colours of your walls and furniture do with a little brightening up?

Whatever you do about depression remember that it is an illness and needs to be properly managed by someone who knows what they are doing. If you recognise your own life or that of anyone close to you in any of the above symptoms; seek help immediately. Aware is a local charity dealing exclusively with depression and can put you in

Artists and writers are eight to ten times more likely to suffer depression than the general public. Some speculate that this is because creative people are more likely to seek improvement and perfection in everything and are therefore more likely to feel disappointed in life and retreat into their shell when faced with a setback or criticism. The other side of the coin is that when their creative imagination is engaged in creating something new, their focus changes to positive outcomes and the brain produces a calming dose of dopamine.

Regain your purpose by engaging with others. Joining and volunteering for organised groups that are trying to achieve a charitable or sporting objective can give you a sense of borrowed

How to pick healthy

sunglasses Many of us think of sunglasses as a cool fashion accessory but a well-chosen pair can have important health benefits. Ultra violet light is four times more intense during the summer and is particularly harmful when reflected off water, snow, sand or pavements. UV light can cause cataracts (cloudy eye lens), macular degeneration (blurriness and vision loss) snow blindness - Photokeratitis (sunburnt eyes), Pterygium (Surfer's Eye – a benign growth on the eye) and various eye cancers. Look for the European kite mark to see if your glasses offer proper protection against Ultra Violet light.

Will your finances be legally paralysed so that your family have difficulties paying for your living expenses and care? Will life and death decisions about your healthcare be made by your family, a trusted friend or a doctor you have never met? More and more of us are going to face these questions in the coming years as people survive longer after strokes and head injuries and our extended lifespan means that more of us will survive to an age when dementia is more likely. One way of preparing for some of these possibilities is to consider giving enduring power of attorney to those you trust to act on your behalf when you are unable to do so, or to engage in advance care planning for your medical treatment.

The person you appoint does not have to be a lawyer but they will be referred to as your “attorney”. The attorney cannot be or have been bankrupt and can only deal on your behalf if you are legally entitled to conduct the transactions concerned.

It would be possible to authorise your attorney to access insurance funds for your benefit and to pay for such things as your normal phone, electricity, caring and other living expenses out of your bank accounts.

However, you could still restrict their powers by, for example, preventing them selling your house.

Be sensible and make sure that you appoint people that you know are independent of each other but able to work together and don’t try to make conditions too complicated as you could make it impossible for your attorneys to act and so defeat the purpose of the exercise.

In England and Wales it is possible to give someone else “lasting power of attorney” to make decisions on your behalf about the kind of medical treatments you will accept or refuse. People in Northern Ireland do not have a legal right to nominate people to make medical decisions for them when they do not have the mental capacity to do it themselves.

It is possible however, to strongly

influence the type of medical decisions made when you are incapacitated by “advance care planning” with your doctors when you have the capacity to do so. This involves making “advance decisions” about the medical treatment you definitely do not want and “advance statements” about the kind of treatment you would prefer in certain circumstances. This may involve stating that you do not want to be resuscitated or kept alive by artificial means in certain circumstances or saying that you would prefer to be treated at home or in a hospice if certain things happen to you. You might name family members you would like medical staff to

consult. The plan cannot include instructions to withdraw food, fluids or pain control measures and cannot request that your life be ended in certain circumstances.

Unlike in England and Wales, medical staff in Northern Ireland are not bound by an advance decision but they are required to take it into consideration when making their decisions. Those caring for you have a duty of care to act in your best interests and your previously expressed wishes are only one of the factors which must be weighed up against each other in what is often a puzzle involving more than one right answer and decisions about

probabilities. By advance planning with your doctor or services such as Macmillan Cancer Support or the Alzheimer’s Society, you can maximise your influence over your medical carers, reduce distress to your family and prevent conflict between your medical team and family. The secret of keeping a dignified control of your finances and healthcare when you lose your powers, is to provide as much information to those around you in advance and in writing and to take legal and medical advice before doing so.

Cheaper car insurance for first time drivers No wonder car insurance for young people is so high.

According to the Department of Transport one in five new drivers will have an accident within a year of starting to drive. The Association of British Insurers say that 18 year old drivers are three times more likely to have an accident than a 48 year old. In spite of this, the RAC say that one in three of us pay more car insurance than we need to. However, the following tips can help even young and first time buyers to reduce their car insurance costs.

Shop around. Most insurance buyers only compare three quotes whilst research shows that people who get seven quotes consistently get the cheapest deal. Don’t just use price comparison sites as less expensive or greater value insurance can sometimes be obtained by direct insurers such as Aviva or Direct Line. Make sure you are

comparing like with like as some companies give extras which do not easily compute in price comparison websites. Companies such as Marks and Spencer for example, may give up to 1000 points on their bank card to new car insurance customers.

Try a “blackbox” policy.

If you are OK with your speed, acceleration, braking, cornering and the time of day you drive being monitored; insurance companies can install an electronic device to monitor your driving. This can cut the cost of your insurance by as much as 40% if you turn out to be a safe low risk driver. Realistically, £200 per year is a more probable average saving. It used to be that no claims bonuses discriminated against new drivers because they did not have a record that allowed them to demonstrate how safely they drove. This new technology means that the safe first time driver has a way of distancing

themselves from reckless people of the same age. A word of caution though – check the small print. Some drivers have complained that they have had premiums increased if their driving was bad and some companies have heavy fees if you change your car, ask for the box to be removed or switch insurer.

Still, the Co-Op claims that 51% of under 25s save up to £544 per year under their scheme.

Here Alex Warke from the Fountain, leaves a memorial at the grave of John Condon from Waterford who was the youngest Irish soldier killed in World War One. Condon signed at the age of thirteen by pretending he was eighteen. He trained in Clonmel before going to Ypres where he was killed in action during a lethal chlorine gas attack on May 24th 2015. His parents were not aware he was out of the country until they received the news of his death. The grave is one of the most visited war graves in Flanders and is regarded by many as a fitting memorial to the futility of war. Alex followed in the footsteps of many in Ireland who have visited the grave including a delegation from the Island of Ireland Partnership in 2008 which included the mayors of Waterford, Cork and Kerry and the Deputy Mayor of Donegal.

cause & Remedy Why do men get so called “man boobs”? Mostly it is because they have too much estrogen and not enough testosterone in their blood. This is often related to the amount of body fat they are carrying. As men get older their testosterone output decreases but the estrogen levels stay the same. In men, estrogen is produced in fatty tissues from testosterone. In particular, fat around the waist acts as a secretory gland producing estrogen from the available testosterone even when the overall testosterone level in the body is reducing.

Only use a small dose of detergent, too much will prevent a proper rinse causing the excess powder to stick to your clothes; 8.

Remove the washing from the machine promptly to prevent mustiness. If you get a musty smell from your clothes it may be because your washing machine harbours bacteria and black mould inside the drum. Once a month do a maintenance wash at over 60 degrees using a bleach containing washing powder (not liquid), dishwasher tablet or bicarbonate of soda. Do not put any clothes in with the maintenance wash and repeat several times until the bacteria are gone as it may not all disappear on the first wash if you have never done this before. Take out the powder drawer regularly and clean out the sticky powder that often accumulates as this often fosters bacteria; (continued on next page............) p14

If possible, allow your clothes to air dry as tumble drying can cause colours to fade and shrinkage will occur overtime. If you are using a tumble dryer always remove the clothes promptly to stop excessive wrinkling, and also to prevent any chance of spontaneous combustion, a major cause of fire; 10.

This is a quick and easy midweek dinner and healthy dessert which can each be made in just 30 mins.

Ingredients 2 cooked chicken breasts 1 red pepper 1 onion Handful of mushrooms 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato puree 1 clove garlic Teaspoon chilli power 2 cups pasta

Add tomato puree and tinned tomatoes Turn heat down and leave to simmer for 5 mins Once pasta is cooked drain and rinse with boiling water, place back on hob to dry for a few mins. Add pasta to sauce and stir well. Serve with salad.
