Cutting the cost of petrol and diesel

With fuel prices falling internationally motorists are finding it cheaper to travel.

However, there are things you can do to reduce fuel consumption and get more miles per litre that do not depend upon the international price of oil.

Prepare your vehicle

Shop for the cheapest fuel using price comparison websites such as petrolprices.com which help you compare prices in your area. Look out for offers particularly at supermarket owned petrol stations. In the

North West keep an eye on the exchange rate as it can make a big difference in the price of fuel;

Plan your journey at a time of day so that you avoid traffic if possible. This will cut down on the amount of time you are on the road;

Put different errands together so that you are not coming back and forth to your home in duplicated journeys.

Consolidate your shopping into a single shop in the week so that unnecessary journeys are cut out. Ask others to do the errands and integrate them into their journeys;

Know where you are going as getting lost and taking detours or the long way around uses extra fuel.

Make sure your car is equipped with maps and sat nav.

How to give your garden instant kerb appeal this summer

Have you ever enviously walked past someone’s picture perfect garden and thought to yourself ‘If only I had the time …..”

Local horticulturist and garden designer Sean Mc Gowan has put together some simple steps that will help you instantly transform the front of your house with a splash of colour, a few well-placed potted plants or hanging baskets and a little imagination.

Transform your house into a vertical garden and add interest to otherwise flat architecture

Vertical gardens for quick impact and easy maintenance

I

f you have an ordinary or dull looking house with ugly or featureless walls, they can be hidden with creeper covered trellises and hanging baskets in an instant. Your eye can be attracted to randomly placed islands of undulating colour on what used to be a flat, plain and boring wall. Your house becomes the canvass for your masterpiece of artistic expression!

Features such as doors and windows can be emphasised or their outline changed to your preference. Change the plants or positions of pots and baskets to add interest at different times of the year bringing your house to life with a mood and personality that changes with the seasons. Keep a watering can filled near the door and it will become second nature to water the plants when needed – a much better gardening plan than struggling with wheelbarrows, spades and lawnmowers in your horizontal garden!

What plants to choose?

If you are unsure what plants to choose for the best effect then local garden centre staff will be more than happy to help you make the right choice. Bedding plants such as Begonia’s, Petunia’s and Fuchsia’s will add wonderful colour and are ideal for pots and containers and if you are too busy to even water, then Geranium’s will tolerate dry conditions without too much damage.

Once you have decided what to plant then you should prepare your pots for planting. Choose as big a

Get Ready for the Greatest Summer Camp on Earth with In Your Space Circus!

I

n Your Space Circus is inviting children to take part in its 2015 Summer Circus Camp which will be running from Monday 6th to Friday 10th July from 10am until 3.30pm each day at In Your Space Circus School. The Camp is for children aged 6-10 years and will be an exciting introduction to the rich world of dynamic circus arts.

Participants will learn the basics of circus practice including performance, juggling, diabolo, unicycle and stilts as well as circus acrobatics, tumbling and balance.

The week will end with a showcase performance for friends, family and the public on the streets of Derry.

During the program the children are taken on an interactive journey through the world of contemporary circus arts. As well as being lots of fun and a really healthy alternative, the Summer Camp builds on essential skills in teamwork, communication, confidence building and trust. It is a great creative outlet and opens children’s eyes to the powerful nature of the arts.

The tutor team is made up of professional circus performers and educators with different speciality skills. Amongst the team we have jugglers, acrobats, hula hoopers and clowns – this leads to a really diverse experience for the children, providing great role models for future engagement with circus and performance.

Quick Action Avoids Hearing Loss - USE IT OR LOSE IT Hearing loss - often due to missed treatment opportunities rather than aging

gnoring hearing loss can lead to unnecessary, permanent and irreversible damage to hearing. The nerves and centres of the brain that help you hear die away if they are not stimulated. Early checks on hearing loss and fitting of often invisible modern hearing aids, can stimulate your natural hearing organs to work better and for longer into old age.

Unattended, a sufferer can not only have hearing loss, but over time can lose the ability to distinguish between different types of sound which can lead others to wrongly conclude that they are mentally confused. The longer you wait to deal with hearing loss the less benefit a hearing aid can be in supporting or improving your natural hearing ability. All of this is avoidable and early intervention is critical to prevent hearing problems becoming more complicated than they need to be.

When you are in the quiet of the home your hearing loss may not be so obvious but warning signs often appear when out and about and you encounter difficulty with background noise or find yourself looking at people’s lips to try and understand what they are saying. People often try to compensate for their hearing loss by sitting very close to or directly face to face with people who are talking to them. In more extreme cases people avoid social situations altogether, often without realising that they are doing it or why they are doing it; they just know that for some reason they feel anxious, moody and withdrawn. The worst thing that can happen is that people use these coping mechanisms to deal with gradual hearing loss and get so used to it that they do

not realise how much their hearing is declining.

Poor hearing can have a real and adverse impact on people’s happiness and engagement with their friends and family. If you notice that a family member is having difficulty hearing, it is kinder to encourage them to seek the free hearing test that will establish what help they need than to let them and you suffer in polite silence. After all, family relationships go so much better when you can hear and understand each other!

Can Homes and Businesses save money and the environment by proper waste management?

W aste makes no financial sense as it involves simply throwing money away. If you have never addressed the questions “what can we reduce, reuse and recycle?” you might be shocked at the answers when you realise how much unnecessary expense you have tolerated over the years for want of a little bit of thought about the subject. The EU report “Opportunities to businesses of improving resource efficiency” says that waste prevention, eco-design, reuse and recycling could convert 8% of the annual sales figure into additional profit for most businesses.

Domestic users could save that amount by thinking smart about whether they need to consume and dispose of so much. At the very least, giving potential waste away to charity shops can give you the satisfaction of knowing that you avoided waste and satisfied a want at the same time. A business or household that does not plan for recycling is missing an opportunity and wasting money by failing to plan. A good place to start your money saving environmental plan is to be aware of what the law requires you to recycle and process in an ecofriendly way.

What must be recycled?

•Batteries that contain harmful chemicals and metals - these are classified as hazardous waste and must be disposed of by a licensed operator and cannot be simply burned or sent to landfill. Portable

•Packaging – reduce packaging by buying as much as possible in large bulk packs or try to ask your suppliers to give you reusable packaging. Cut down on the amount of packaging you need to recycle by, for example, asking staff to use ceramic cups at dispensers instead of paper ones.

What waste requires special attention?

•Construction waste should not be disposed of until you have put a site waste management plan in place involving the client, architect, project managers, principal contractor, sub-contractors and tradesmen. This focuses everyone on using materials more cost effectively and reducing unnecessary fly tipping. This may soon become a legal requirement. batteries such as AAA or AA batteries for remotes or industrial batteries such as barcode readers, forklift truck units and automotive batteries must all be disposed of in a particular way. The lead content of automotive batteries can make them valuable for recycling.

•Electrical and electronic equipment must be stored, disposed of safely and transported by a registered waste carrier. Examples include fridges, radiators, power tools, TVs, computers, smoke

detectors, vending machines, fluorescent lights and display equipment. Save yourself money before buying electrical equipment by asking yourself if you really need to buy a new product or could you repair your existing unit? Can your existing device be upgraded or could you buy refurbished equipment from another business?

If you have to dispose of it your original supplier may be required to dispose of it for you. Ask your waste disposal consultant.

•Fridges and air-conditioning equipment containing ozonedepleting substances must be disposed of by a licensed operator to avoid dissipation of fluorinated greenhouse gases and ozonedepleting substances.

•End-of-life vehicles must be sent to a licensed waste management facility for dismantling, component part recycling and depollution of hazardous fluids. It is the responsibility of the business to check that the centre is licensed by ringing NIEA on 0800 302 0008. You should get a certificate of destruction to prove to the

When Snoring Isn’t Funny Anymore The Dangers of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

However, without knowing it, some people suffer from a potentially dangerous sleep disorder known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea where the air passage at the back of their throat closes over as you sleep, cutting off oxygen to the brain. This can happen hundreds of times throughout the night without the sleeper realising it but the consequences can be stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Sufferers are seven to ten times more likely to have a car accident because they can suddenly blank out while driving without warning due to the lack of sleep. The sufferer just knows they feel wretched and tired during the day although they wrongly think they have had plenty of sleep.

Sometimes depression develops. It can be cured; so if you or someone you know snores persistently it is vital to seek advice and tests to see if you or they are at risk from the condition.

You are more likely to suffer from the condition if you are overweight and older. Men are twice as likely as women to suffer. People with thick necks tend to have larger than normal uvula and soft palate that hangs down and blocks the windpipe. A larger than average tongue can also block the airway in many people as well as a deviated septum in the nose.

The symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea are: 1. Excessive daytime sleepiness; 2. Uncontrollable sleep napping during the day; 3. Morning headache; 4. Dry mouth/throat; 5. Sore throat; 6. Depression; 7. Loss of memory and attention/concentration; 8. Change in personality; 9. Irritability; 10. Fatigue; 11. Acid reflux; 12. Sexual dysfunction and impotence; 13. Periodic limb movement when asleep; 14. Excessive snoring; 15. Unrefreshing sleep;

16. Restlessness; 17. Waking during the night, possibly with a choking sensation; 18. Nocturia (needing to go to the toilet during the night).

Some remedies include:

1. Avoiding sleeping on your back by getting pillows to prop you on your side; 2. Don’t take sleeping pills as they relax the muscles of the throat and make matters worse; 3. We are not born with the capacity to regulate our emotions nor the life skills to navigate life’s challenging circumstances. Emotional well-being is dependent on developing “secure attachments” in early childhood with adults we trust. Bonding promotes physical changes in the brain which help the child in the longer term to respond to challenging life situations by taking control of their thoughts and emotions.

Communication, protective reassurance of the child and confirming that they are valuable worthwhile people generates a hopeful optimism that equips them with a mindset to handle future adversity. Therefore, having a good start in life means we develop into emotionally secure teenagers and adults capable of coping with stress without resorting to destructive behavior aimed at avoiding the pressure.

This does not mean we do not have difficult days it means we respond in an emotionally healthy way that is not selfdestructive.

Our incomplete brains at birth mean we need emotional support from others even past teenage years.

For those who do not have a good start in life out of no fault of their own, encountering difficult situations can lead some to selfharming or suicidal behaviors as a means of coping with intolerable emotional pain.

How we relate to our babies and “what we do” with our babies in those formative years leaves an imprint on their brain and shapes their personality. Adolescence is a challenging crucial stage of development where the brain stops growing for a period time; a time when support from emotionally healthy adults is a vital substitute for missing emotional coping skills; so do not give up on them.

It’s is a time they need adult support most as their brains are not often developed enough physically to have the emotional capacity to go it alone. The brain is an amazing organ that is not fully developed until 26-28 years of age.

Neuroscience teaches us that how we behave towards our babies shapes their physical brain development. This research offers new insights into emotional development given that the brain is not fully developed at birth.

As a psychotherapist, I have studied psychology, social and behavioural science and counselling specializing in the area of self-harm and suicide.

I see the impact of insecure attachments that manifests in hurt. Many turn to self-harm as a means of coping or attempt suicide to express how difficult and overwhelming life has become. I also speak from personal experience growing up in a family affected by trauma.

It not only affected me, as I witnessed the ripple effect on

my siblings and whole family too. There is light at the end of the tunnel. This journey requires a non-judgmental approach. It is important to see the hurt person behind the behavior through a therapeutic relationship of understanding, empathy, compassion and kindness to light the flame of HOPE. A journey of recovery has its roots in early childhood experiences, but with help comes HOPE with hope comes change, with change comes HEALING and emotional health that leads to a life worth living.

Help for Rural Families

R

ural Area Partnership in Derry Limited (RAPID) has received £700,000 from the Big Lottery Fund “Supporting Families Programme” to help families in areas including Learmount, Eglinton, Lettershandoney, Newbuildings and Strathfoyle to increase skills and confidence and give their children the best possible start in life. The project will include activities such as literacy classes, homework clubs, health and wellbeing workshops, and mother and baby activities. There will also be social activities to build relationships and reduce isolation. R.A.P.I.D. will work in partnership with Derry Healthy Cities, Learmount Community Development group, Eglinton Community Limited, Lettershandoney Community Development Group, Newbuildings Community and Environmental Group and Strathfoyle Community Association.

Project co-ordinator Caroline Devlin said: “People living in rural areas often miss out on services because of transport and other issues.

This project will provide essential family support that will complement what is available in the city”.

Ms Devlin said the project would include group activities and one-to-one support to increase families’ well-being, skills and confidence.

“The support workers will be there to offer help and guidance to families going through difficulties. They will also let people know where they can get more specialised support if they need it.”

The Community Help in Learning & Development (CHILD) project aims to provide 600 rural families with the skills, knowledge and support systems to deal with transition, crisis and major changes such as crime or bereavement, and to provide practical help and support with numeracy and literacy to support child educational development. Child centred activities will address needs across the age spectrum from pre-birth to post primary with family focused support being provided to parents or grandparents. The scheme will provide a support infrastructure for rural families to develop and grow together, and, reduce isolation felt by parents and children living in rural communities and “sleeper villages”.

• 0-3 programme will focus on health and early development, bonding and interaction, parent and child skills, childcare, lifestyle and well-being, preparing for education, crisis intervention and support for family upheaval (death/accident/crime) • 3+ programme will explore pre-school development, school transition, communication and numeracy and literacy (for parents and children), family upheaval and signposting and support structures.

• Post primary programme (post primary transition programme) will assist with parenting support, lifestyle education/choices, peer and group support, crisis intervention and emotional resilience.

The project will build child and parent relationships by reducing fear, tension and insecurities centred on education and moving from primary to post-primary education (parent and grandparent numeracy and

literacy support, connections and activities with other school children in the area and post primary transition programme). Community based activities will increase cohesion and bonds to the community and promote a sense of belonging, particularly for new families in the area, whilst supporting access to support services (health and wellbeing activities, parent and early development support activities, post-natal support and social activities). Social and transitional activities for children in the area will increase confidence, self-esteem, build resilience and essential friendships and relationships, supporting social skills development for their futures. Support activities for parents and grandparents will increase the coping skills of many isolated families to deal with conflict, transitions and crisis, thereby improving family life, structure and the home environment.

Karen Monteith, (32), and her husband have a 16-month-old son, John are a good example of the kind of people the scheme aims to support. They are expecting a new baby in early February. Karen said: “I work in the city but live in a rural area in Claudy.

I found it frustrating when I went back to work after maternity leave and colleagues were talking about all the services available for families in the city – things like pregnancy yoga and parent and toddler groups. There is nothing like that in rural areas like ours and it can be quite isolating. You do miss having that contact with parents who are in the same position as yourself…When I’m at work, a childminder looks after my 16-month-old and so he doesn’t get to socialise much with other children.

This project will be another chance for him to meet other children and for me and other families to get

Without a trust, it is also possible that other members of your family unit could have their entitlement to means tested benefits affected.

Pension credits for the over 60s including further savings credit and guarantee credit could also be withdrawn if a trust is not in place.

Even if you are not currently in receipt of benefits now, it would be prudent to protect your money in a trust in case you have a sudden and unexpected need to call on state benefits in the future. Some social welfare benefits are unaffected if you do not set up a Personal Injury Trust; these include Disability Living Allowance, Employment Support Allowance, Carers Allowance, Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and Independent Living Fund Awards.

Family Inheritance and Nursing Home Care If your award is simply paid as a lump sum into a bank account without the protection of a trust, it may be

added to the value of your home for the purposes of deciding whether your estate passes the Inheritance Tax Threshold of £325,000 beyond which your estate will be taxed at 40%. Money in a Personal Injury Trust can also be excluded from means testing if you need support when going into a nursing home.

These last two exemptions on their own could be worth very substantial amounts of money for most families so proper organisation of award monies into a trust could have a profound effect upon the finances of future generations of your family.

It would be a self-inflicted injustice if money rightly awarded to you for your suffering was handed back to the Inland Revenue or used to disentitle you to state help simply because you failed to take advice on how to legally protect your award. Tax and social welfare entitlements are specific to the particular circumstances of each individual and their family. If you, or someone you are responsible for, are in receipt of lump sum compensation, engaging solicitors and estate planners to jointly create a protective Personal Injury Trust could be one of the shrewdest financial decisions you ever make.

Top causes of accidental death in dogs and cats and how to avoid them The best way to help your pet live longer is to feed them with nutritious food, give them exercise and attention, keep them warm and dry and make sure they have regular checks and immunisations. That way you can fend off the ravages of natural aging for as long as possible. However, you can also take precautions to avoid the unexpected or sudden accident that can cut their life short prematurely.

Many of the risks of accident are greater in the summer season so particular vigilance is necessary at this time of year.

1. Poisoning Watch what you put down in your garden as weed killer and slug repellent can be consumed by your dog. You will know that your dog or cat has eaten something poisonous when you see them salivating, vomiting, staggering, collapsing becoming unconscious or suffering from diarrhoea. Get them to a vet straight away.

The whole daffodil plant is toxic but it only takes 15 grammes of the bulb to kill a dog. A cat brushing past the pollen of a lilly which it later licks off its coat could suffer kidney failure. Other toxic plants include tulips, snowdrops, cyclamen, hydrangea, rhododendron and amaryllis. Care should be taken with cuttings brought into the house as cats like to jump up on tables where flowers are arranged. Horse chestnut twigs, leaves and conkers should be avoided so keep a close eye on your dog when walking in the forest.

Fencing should keep cats from ponds as they can fall in and drown. Rainwater collection barrels should be covered over as cats can fall in and drown because they cannot climb back up the smooth sides. If your dog likes to swim in rivers or the sea think about a dog life vest and don’t let them stay in long enough to get exhaustion or cramp.

Do not tie a dog up in direct sunlight on warm days; make sure they can get up and roam around into the shade and have plenty of water to drink. Certainly do not leave them in the car on sunny days even with the windows open. Heat stroke can come upon a dog in a matter of minutes and can result in permanent organ damage. You should recognise it if it pants excessively or loudly, if it is extremely thirsty, vomits frequently, has a bright red tongue and pale gums, if the skin around muzzle or neck doesn’t snap back when pinched, the saliva is thick and the heart rate goes up. If any of these symptoms occur move the dog indoors to a cool place and give them cold water to drink. Put an ice pop in their mouth if one is to hand but make sure you hold on to it to prevent choking. Dab the dog with a towel saturated with cold water but do not put a towel over the dog as this could trap heat.

Do not submerge the dog in very cold water as it may cool down too quickly.

Dogs which are old, obese, or have a history of heart disease or seizures are more likely to suffer from heat strokes as are short nosed breeds such as Pugs, Boxers, Saint Bernard’s and Shih Tzus.

Young dogs are particularly prone to being hit by cars so it is important to keep them on a leash and to confine them in an enclosed area if they are allowed to walk about freely outside. Most cats are hit at night when their owners let them out to roam freely so perhaps this practice should be avoided.

5. Electrocution

Pups in particular like to chew through wires. Make sure all plugs are pulled out, particularly if you are leaving the pet indoors for a long time while you go out.

6. Obstructed bowels

Animals eat anything – especially if they are bored. Some animals will require surgery and intravenous fluids to remove stubborn obstructions.

7.Suffocation

If you leave your pet alone in the house for prolonged periods make sure that all bags, pots or jars are out of harm’s way, particularly if they have food residue in them because animals can stick their heads into things that smell tempting without being able to take them out again.

How to bring light into a dark house If you have a dark room that you want to flush with light you have presumably thought of the obvious remedy of painting the ceiling and walls white to brighten the room.

Apart from that, here are some extra things you can do to brighten up the dark corners of your home.

Sash window Mirrors and white throws for furniture provide instant brightness Put mirrors in the back of an old window sash and hang it on the wall at right angles to a window to double the light effect from the real window.

Cover dark furniture with white throws to reflect light out into the room. Put light coloured rugs on the floor to reflect light up.

Multiply the reflective surfaces by placing lights close to walls to reflect off the wall, ceiling and reflective objects.

Extend the curtain rail beyond the edge of the window so that curtains can be opened completely without blocking inward light. Hang the curtains so that they drop down vertically without covering any part of the window. Pulling the curtain partially back in the middle and fixing it to the wall with a swag leaves the top of the curtain still covering the light. Get rid of pelmets as they are dated and just block the light.

CHICKEN AND PINEAPPLE SKEWERS Ingredients: • One cup of tomato ketchup • Two tablespoons Worcester sauce • One tablespoons of yellow mustard • Quarter cup honey • Quarter cup Brown sugar • Two cloves garlic crushed • Juice of a lemon • Four chicken fillets • One red/green pepper • One tin pineapple cubes • Wooden skewers (soaked in water for ten minutes)

Method: In a saucepan in a low heat put the ketchup, honey, mustard, sugar, garlic, and lemon.

Bring to a simmer and cook gently until thickened (about 10mins).

Leave to one side until cool.

Cut the chicken and peppers into cubes.

Alternatively put the chicken, peppers and pineapple unto the skewers.

Brush with a little oil.

Leave a little of the sauce to one side for a dip.

With the remaining sauce brush over the skewers.

Cook on barbeque for ten minutes.

MELON RECIPE Take the melon and cut in half long ways , if you have a melon baller make as many balls as possible , if you don’t have a melon baller cut the melon in half again, and with a small cutter press in the melon and cut small circles , put the melon onto your leftover skewers or cocktail sticks and top with a cherry or grape.
