Shubenacadie Canal

Originally connecting Halifax Harbour with the Bay of Fundy through an intricate 115km (70mi) course of lakes and locks. Now broad trails border the banks of the Shubenacadie Canal with interpretive signs posted detailing the construction of the locks. The canal-side trails are mostly wheelchair accessible, run for 2.5km (1.5mi) on each side.

Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia

Dedicated to preserving and promoting Nova Scotia’s Black history and culture. The centre’s museum highlights historic influxes of Black settlers – the Black Loyalists who fled the American Revolution, the Maroons from Jamaica in 1796 and the American slaves after the War of 1812.

Bedford Institute of Oceanography

Free guided tours can be tailored to meet particular interests, age group, and size. A series of wall panels describe the research at BIO. The Titanic exhibit boasts a model of what the Titanic now looks like on the ocean floor and images from the 1991 expedition. The latest technology in seafloor mapping is at BIO. 3-D multibeam images have been used to find the wreckage from air disasters and can be used to determine fish habitat. Handson activities include an erosion model, liferaft, microscopes and the famous Sea Pavilion. Tours are by advance arrangement only.
