Does a space create a community or does a community create a space? At Saint Thomas More Chapel, we think both happen simultaneously. Our Chapel and Center provide a warm and engaging environment for Catholic ministry to happen on the campus of Yale University. Students learn about faith through our Sunday dinner discussions and lectures, practice it among themselves in graduate and undergraduate communities, and live it through volunteer work at our weekly soup kitchen and through other local service projects. Our Chapel and Center are warm places to live out the Christian life. Our staff looks forward to welcoming you to STM. Please feel free to stop by to say hello. Reflection & Knowledge STM offers lectures and fellowships that explore the intersection between faith and academics.

Fellowships & Lectures STM is committed to vigorous Catholic intellectual discourse. We challenge our community to engage and deepen their faith through lectures, dinner forums, book groups and personal study.
The Judge Guido Calabresi Fellowship in Religion & Law This fellowship seeks to advance the Catholic intellectual life of students in the area of religion and the law.
The Thomas E. Golden, Jr. Fellowship in Faith & Science This fellowship is designed to explore the challenging questions raised by science for persons of faith.
LECTURES On most Sunday evenings following 5 pm Mass, STM hosts a lecture or conversation with a casual dinner. Guest speakers cover a wide array of topics including theology, women’s contributions to church and society, and the intersection of poetry with faith. Each September, STM hosts the Hunt Prize Lecture in partnership with America Media. Yale Catholic faculty are invited to share thoughts on their lives as scholars and believers. Theology on Tap and Chaplain’s Teas are offered throughout the academic year as well.

FELLOWSHIPS The Fay Vincent, Jr. Fellowship in Faith & Culture This fellowship invites distinguished guests to campus to speak about accomplishments in their field of expertise, allowing students the opportunity to examine the relationship between faith and work in the world.

The Vincent Library A Chapel library is a place to study and to think. It is a place to quietly encounter the Word. he Vincent Library is STM’s library. It is located on the second floor of the T Golden Center. With more than 5,000 volumes on Catholicism and religion in our collection, we encourage the STM community to make use of this resource. We hope that you will make yourself at home in our sunny library during your time at Yale. There are comfortable chairs and private study nooks, perfect for getting some reading done, writing a paper or preparing for an exam. In the late fall and winter, enjoy our cozy Reading Room, complete with a working fireplace and breathtaking views of Yale’s Pierson College and Harkness Tower. STM offers a selection of reading groups that focus on specific areas of study and their relationship to the Catholic faith. The reading groups meet once a month, usually over a meal, to discuss readings that are current, engaging and easy to manage with a full course load. READING GROUPS Faith and Law Faith and Law provides STM members with a forum to discuss their Catholic faith and their study of law.
Women Reading Theology Women Reading Theology meets to discuss theology written by contemporary Catholic women.

Faith and Science Faith and Science examines the different (and sometimes complementary) ways Christianity and science approach human rights, stewardship and life’s unknowns.

Classes & Programs STM offers many opportunities for faith formation through studying the Catholic faith, preparing for Sacraments or engaging in Catholic leadership development. CLASSES Yale offers a number of courses for credit on Catholicism. This fall, consider enrolling in Catholic Intellectual Tradition with Professor Carlos Eire; Meditation: East & West or Discernment of Spirits with Professor Janet Ruffing; Dante’s Journey to God with Professor Peter Hawkins and Catholic Liturgy with Professor Teresa Berger. PROGRAMS RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) If you or someone you know are interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA is the process developed by the Catholic Church to assist in this discernment process. Candidates are introduced to aspects of Catholic beliefs and practices in weekly meetings.
VOLUNTEER TEACHING RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Yale students are encouraged to volunteer as religious education teachers for pre-K to grade 10. This is a wonderful way to pass on the beliefs, values and practices of the Church as a role model for children.

CONFIRMATION Catholics who have been Baptized and received Holy Communion, but have not been Confirmed, are invited to participate in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Classes are held in the spring semester.

Spirituality Join with others in renewing your faith life in small groups, one-on-one meetings and retreats. SMALL CHURCH COMMUNITIES STM’s Small Church Communities (SCC) are part of a pastoral initiative found throughout the world. SCCs bring together small groups of students, faculty and community members weekly to pray, discuss scripture for the upcoming Sunday Mass and reflect on how it relates to our lives. SPIRITUALITY GROUPS The Men’s and Women’s Spirituality Groups provide students with a supportive environment in which to explore spiritual issues particular to their experience as Catholics. NAVIGATING YOUR 20s: VOCATION DISCERNMENT Join with other students in prayer and discussion as you explore how to discern your gifts and talents to best serve the church.
PASTORAL COUNSELING, VOCATIONAL DISCERNMENT & SPIRITUAL DIRECTION STM’s Chaplains provide pastoral counseling for students seeking a confidant or direction during a time of difficulty or questioning. They also provide spiritual direction by accompanying students as they deepen their relationship with God and offer assistance with vocational discernment through individual prayer and discussion.

RETREATS Retreats offer an opportunity to step away from the distractions of everyday life and spend time with God and peers in a unique way. This year STM is planning a two-day Fall Undergraduate Retreat, a one-day Fall Graduate Retreat and a Busy Person’s Retreat in December. Additional retreats include a Community Retreat and a Spring Retreat.

Liturgy & Sacraments We invite you to take advantage of the rich sacramental life offered each week at Saint Thomas More. SUNDAY MASS 10 am followed by Coffee Hour 5 pm followed by Dinner 10 pm followed by Late Night Snack DAILY MASS 5:30 pm Monday evening prayer 5:30 pm Tuesday through Friday
PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES At STM, students have many opportunities to deepen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Student-led prayer is offered on Monday evenings, drawing on the rich tradition of prayer in the Roman Catholic Church, including the rosary, Ignatian examen, the lives of the Saints and the Stations of the Cross. Adoration and Taizé prayer on Thursday evenings in the Chapel allows students an hour of personal prayer and periods of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament in silence and song. Each Friday during Lent, students lead the Stations of the Cross. Students are also encouraged to spend time in private prayer and reflection in the Meditation Room. LITURGICAL MINISTRY Students are invited to share their talents at Mass by singing in the choir, playing an instrument or serving as lectors, acolytes or Eucharistic ministers. Free voice lessons are available for cantor interns through STM’s Center for Music and Liturgy.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is celebrated weekly in the Chapel on Tuesday evenings from 6–7 pm or by appointment. A communal penance service is held every Advent and Lent.

Community At STM, we seek to meet you where you are and assist you on your faith journey. STM strives to create an atmosphere of hospitality and inclusion to all who visit or study at Yale. Graduate and Undergraduate Council members collaborate with Chaplains in planning programs and social events. Bilingual Masses and multicultural social events and activities are celebrated throughout the year. STM partners with a number of Yale religious ministries in an effort to build community across a wide variety of religious and spiritual identities and understandings. UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE COUNCIL LEADERSHIP Student leadership, energy and input strengthen programs offered at STM. Our Undergraduate and Graduate Councils collaborate with our Chaplains in planning social events and programming. Programs for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students involve prayer and spirituality; intellectual life and faith; social justice and community building. Students enjoy events like wine and cheese socials, local outings, fun workshops, study breaks and holiday events.

ESTEEM (Engaging Students to Enliven the Ecclesial Mission) Develop your skills as a leader through sharing your gifts and talents with the Catholic Church by participating in ESTEEM, a nationwide program created by a partnership between the Leadership Roundtable and STM. ESTEEM is now offered at twelve Campus Ministry Centers across the country.

Service & Social Justice Our faith is lived out through serving God, living Catholic ideals and demonstrating compassion for humankind. STM enables you to explore your spiritual path through service. ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK STM’s Alternative Spring Break program provides undergraduates with an opportunity to put their faith into action, reevaluate their role in social issues and work together to find solutions during their spring break, as they serve disadvantaged communities throughout the world. CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES STM partners with Catholic Relief Services to assist impoverished and disadvantaged people overseas with projects like the Helping Hands meal packaging event, presented by Catholic Relief Services and Stop Hunger Now.
UNITED NATIONS NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (NGO) Through STM, there are opportunities for access and engagement in the processes of the United Nations through participation in NGO committee work. Students are invited and challenged to use their collaborative and intellectual gifts in a faith response to the Gospel and Catholic social teaching.

REFUGEE ASSISTANCE PARTNERSHIP STM partners with integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS) to support refugees who are resettled in Connecticut. Students can assist in tutoring (English as a Second Language), providing cultural integration and setting up new homes. STM is sponsoring a Muslim family from Syria who arrived in July.

Service & Social Justice STM AMBASSADORS The STM Ambassadors program offers an intensive, summertime initiative focused on helping the underserved population wherever you are spending the summer. Students work with a nonprofit agency of their choice on a creative new endeavor that addresses a need and submit the proposal for funding to STM. If selected, the student and the agency could receive up to $5,000 ($2,500 for the agency and $2,500 for the student’s stipend). This project is meant to bring together the needs of the agency and the student’s personal passion. STM SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS Student-leaders who want to be on the front line of social change for the betterment of the underserved in New Haven are encouraged to develop innovative ways to serve people in need through this program. Each semester, STM Social Entrepreneurs select projects to fund via an application process. STM WEDNESDAY SOUP KITCHEN Each week, STM’s Wednesday Soup Kitchen serves lunch to hundreds of guests. Students are invited to join with community members to prepare, serve and welcome our soup kitchen guests.

TUTORING AT ST. MARTIN DE PORRES ACADEMY Each year, underprivileged youth from the New Haven community are in need of tutors to help them in all subjects from english to math to science. Student volunteer tutors help these children develop stronger academic skills, better concentration, more confidence and stronger study skills.
