Capital Clean Up: Groundwork and Proctor & Gamble

P&G CAPITAL CLEAN-UP PROJECTS WITH GROUNDWORK LONDON 2012 Groundwork London organised teams of volunteers to help London shine at eight P&G Capital Clean-up events held in six boroughs throughout May and June 2012. Over 250 volunteers armed with cleaning equipment and bags of enthusiasm carried out a whole range of activities across the different sites including weeding, planting, litter picking, scrubbing railings and sweeping.

Two other sites also benefitted from significant P&G investment which will go towards securing a range of spatial and community-based projects.

In total 15 adults and 59 children participated in the Capital Clean-up event at King George’s Fields held on 27 June. Both adults and children thoroughly enjoyed getting involved in an event that benefited the whole community.

There was an impressive improvement in the appearance and cleanliness of the playground following the clean-up. Volunteers were kept busy sweeping and clearing pathways, weeding planting beds and collecting five bin bags of litter.

“It’s been a fantastic day, the children have enjoyed it and they’ve learnt a lot of things they wouldn’t learn in the classroom. Because they play here so much after school it’s great for them to get involved in their own community and look after their own patch.”

Chapman’s Green, Haringey

25 volunteers worked on sprucing up the small but popular local park on 28 June.

Tasks included clearing and weeding overgrown flower beds, litter picking and mulching rose beds. Volunteers were largely families who lived in local area.

Putney High Street, Wandsworth “We could use an army of volunteers to tackle the whole High Street and make Putney shine!” Alek, volunteer

Five local residents took to the streets on 30 June to give it a spring clean before the Olympic Cycling event which passes through the borough at the end of July.

Volunteers from the local area, together with Groundwork London staff, scrubbed clean the street furniture on Putney Bridge.

The volunteers worked very hard scrubbing away grease and grime on safety railings and benches, working their way up the High Street. The small band of volunteers were encouraged and supported by passers by who were curious about their work and inspired by their dedication. The results speak for themselves with the bright blue safety railings emerging from under a thick layer of grime.

Brentford High Street, Hounslow On 28 June, a team of 24 volunteers spruced up Brentford High Street and surrounding streets and open spaces by planting approximately 250 plants in seven meters of roadside shrub beds and collected eight bags of rubbish. Many of the participants were from Brentford School for Girls and thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands dirty in the local community.

Ravenscourt Park Nature Conservation Area, Hammersmith & Fulham

Throughout the day on 27 June, a team of 15 local residents and members of Quadron (the Park’s maintenance team) took part in a number of activities in the Ravenscourt Park Conservation area. They cleared shrub areas and generated green waste that will contribute to making compost for the park in the future.

Volunteers also helped to litter pick the conservation area and clear the pond where they also took part in hunting for pond life such as baby frogs, newts and water boatmen.

A further Clean-up has been organised to involve local residents.

Bishops Park, Hammersmith & Fulham On 19 May, 27 volunteers cleaned up Hammersmith & Fulham.

At the Grade II listed Bishops Park, Fulham, volunteers cleared paths, removed debris and weeds, picked litter and repainted the bike stands.

Many of the volunteers were members of the local community, and were excited to seize the opportunity to help clean up their local park and get involved in volunteering.

Wimbledon and Putney Commons, Wandsworth

On 19 May, 41 volunteers cleaned up Wimbledon and Putney Commons.

Volunteers blitzed the Commons with litter pickers and bin bags.

The Commons are an area of calm and tranquillity in the midst of the urban sprawls of Wimbledon, Putney and Kingston upon Thames in South West London. Making up approximately 460 hectares of woodland, scrubland and heathland habitat for birds and wildlife, including nine ponds, the Commons are recognised as an area of scientific interest and special conservation value.

Wormwood Scrubs, Hammersmith & Fulham On 19 May at Wormwood Scrubs Local Nature Reserve, the largest open space in Hammersmith & Fulham, 25 volunteers built a log pile habitat for lizards and insects, undertook a thistle pick, a scrub clearance and removed unsightly litter that threatens local wildlife.

Pinemartin Close Activity Park, Brent Pinemartin Close is a mixed tenure and multiple landlord neighbourhood in the Dollis Hill ward of NW2. At the heart of the estate was a neglected open green space that had become the focus for anti-social behaviour such as dog fouling, alcohol abuse and mini-motor racing.

Groundwork London worked with P&G, local residents and other local stakeholders to improve and landscape the space that is inclusive, integrated and attractive, with features that include informal natural play, space for relaxation, wildlife and nature features, an outdoor gym and raised food growing beds.

P&G investment enhanced several elements of the scheme to include additional play equipment and improved planting. The P&G maintenance grant will help establish community gardening workshops, play ranger activities for children and family fun days.

Whittington Hospital Sensory Garden, Islington A disused and overgrown tennis court area has been redeveloped into a green Oasis Sensory Garden, open to all, informed by guidance from patients, staff, local residents and other stakeholders.

The garden has been split into zones to include a sheltered seating area, sensory planting, a quiet zone and focal art area.

The special planting area with raised beds will give children the opportunity to participate in gardening activities as part of their treatment and rehabilitation.

The P&G investment was used to enhance the existing plans by enabling additional planting and a new timber pergola with stepped roof, provided to give further areas of shade and colourful light patterns.

P&G’s maintenance grant will support the site’s ongoing maintenance and a series of events and parties for patients and visitors.
