Environmental Business Services is part of the work of each trust and concentrates on improving the business environment, thus reducing its effect on climate change and improving the local economy by making companies safer for employees, less intrusive to the surrounding population and more efficient - leading to increased wealth and job opportunities. As part of Groundwork’s commitment to regenerating communities and delivering sustainable development, we encourage companies and their employees to be more aware of their environmental impact - both globally and locally. And, as a non-profit organisation, profits from the business services are reinvested in community projects, some of which are detailed throughout the calendar. ge or 01 elp call h For fu can se rther info w you s plea o h r n m o a n t i o with G t c je ro u n d w o r k ’s c o m m u n i t y p r o

casestudy Manchester Rusk Company The Challenge Groundwork EBS has been working with Manchester Rusk Co. Ltd since 2002 and has previously helped the company achieve improvements in waste management. Following this work, further potential was identified for reducing lost energy consumption from their power packaging equipment, IT system, lighting, air and production equipment.

The Process The company employed process engineers to carry out feasibility studies of the factory and measure the amount of waste heat produced. They then investigated a heat exchange system whereby waste heat could be collected and converted into energy, which is then utilised to reheat water to be used back in the process.

The Result The company has reduced energy bills by 63% through improved energy efficiency. This has reduced the amount of energy used and, in turn, reduced carbon emissions by at least 40 tonnes per annum. This is set to further increase by approx. 6.8 tonnes with the introduction of renewable technologies.

Summary Energy costs have been reduced by more than 63% through a combined programme of improvement. This has safeguarded 19 jobs and increased process efficiency at the plant. It has also helped Manchester Rusk take a further step towards their goal of becoming carbon neutral.

I’d recommend other businesses to speak to Groundwork and have a closer look at their energy consumption and see how much they can save

casestudy Rainbow Park The Challenge After the demolition of a block of flats, the land that was left was simply grassed over - leaving the local community to challenge Groundwork to make better use of the space.

The Process

Young local resident

Residents helped design play facilities for the space, after local children and parents were taken on a tour of other play areas. They helped create the rainbow and sun entrance, planned the celebrations and named the space ‘Rainbow Park’.

The Result The playground has provided a focal point for the local community - giving them a place to meet. There is also an accessible swing for disabled children and a range of unique artwork to enjoy.

Summary This project brought the whole community together. Residents planned the park, Action Factory helped create artwork designed by the people who live in the area and the local children named the park and designed the entrance.

This programme was designed to address the needs of young people, within a specific school, who have low levels of attainment in mainstream education. It gives them the best chance to fulfil their potential and progress onto full-time education, employment or training. Groundwork delivers over 5,900 regeneration projects each year across the UK. The first pioneering Groundwork Trust was established on Merseyside in 1981 as an experiment in urban fringe regeneration. There are now over fifty trusts in the UK - seven in the north west, developing and delivering regeneration programmes in the region’s most deprived areas. Each Groundwork Trust is a partnership between the public, private and voluntary sectors with its own board of trustees. The trusts are supported by Groundwork Northwest, the regional office e of Groundwork UK. oj pr stu y e nit as mu m For fu o ec c r rther det h u t o ails of some of at in a n d look a ro u n d M a n c h e s t e r, h a v e a
