It’s been almost one year since I started as the Executive Director at Grounds For Sculpture, and what an exciting year it’s been. As many of you know, the Seward Johnson Retrospective Exhibition which opened last May brought record crowds to the park. It has been extended through this spring. In the fall, we opened a monumental exhibition of work by Michael Graves entitled Past as Prologue, which spans 50 years of humanistic design, architecture, and art from this modern master. As a perfect counterpoint to Past as Prologue, our 20th annual student award exhibition, presented in partnership with the International Sculpture Center, is a glimpse into the future of contemporary art. These exhibitions are currently on view and I encourage you to make the time to see them. You will not be disappointed.

Our new Education Center will open in early spring, providing additional workshop and classroom space. Jae Ko, an awardwinning Korean-born artist who works with huge pallets of paper, will begin her most ambitious installation yet. There will be several opportunities to view the process as it unfolds—and we’re delighted to be able to offer these behind-the-scenes views. We are also offering numerous ways

to engage more deeply with the Past as Prologue exhibition, including the first ever GFS Product Design Challenge (read more about it on page 18). Michael Graves himself will select winners for a special award. There’s also Film for Thought, a new Sunday Matinee series, and plenty of other things to do indoors when it’s cold outside.

I am continually impressed by the dedication of our board members, volunteers, and staff, and by the energy and vision of our founder, Seward Johnson.

And I am grateful to you, our community of guests, members, supporters, and business partners. Your thoughtful comments, your pride in this place, your patronage, and your philanthropy all help to sustain Grounds For Sculpture. about gfs Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully sited on landscaped parkland full of exotic trees and flowers.

The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin.

Always innovative and impressive, the ISC and GFS collaborative exhibition in the Domestic Arts Building presents the sculptural works created by the recipients of the International Sculpture Center’s 2014 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Awards.

The 22 artists in this juried exhibition were selected from a pool of nominees representing 151 university sculpture programs in North America and abroad.

This annual award was founded in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and encourage their commitment to the field of sculpture, as well as to recognize the award recipient’s faculty sponsors and their institutions. Don’t miss the potential future of sculpture as these extraordinary students exhibit their award-winning work.

Seward Johnson: The Retrospective On view through July 2015

The exhibition continues in the Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery, adjacent to the Welcome Center.

Favorites include Johnson’s interactive rendition of Mona Lisa called A Reason to Smile, the remarkable nude in her elaborate boudoir in homage to Manet, Confrontational Vulnerability, and Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earring á la Johnson titled The Nature of Obsession.

Jae Ko: Major Indoor Installation of SHIRO Installation begins February 2015 Check our website for opportunities to view portions of the installation in process!

Throughout the winter weeks of early 2015, Washington, DC based sculptor Jae Ko will install a monumental paper relief sculpture along the 80-foot span of articulated wall in the East Gallery.

Jae Ko will transform the sculptural into the architectural by rolling and layering dozens of stacks of white paper against the gallery wall, creating the largest and most ambitious piece of her career to date. Shiro will be open to the public on March 28 and on display through February 7, 2016.

Attracting a record number of guests to Grounds For Sculpture since it opened in May 2014, this impressive exhibition presents an overview of artist and GFS Founder Seward Johnson’s 50-year career through a lifetime collection of his works, including Forever Marilyn, the 26-foot tall, 36,000-pound Marilyn Monroe sculpture from his Icons Revisited series (on view until spring 2015), as well as the lifelike bronze figures of ordinary people that are familiar sights throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia from his Celebrating the Familiar series.

February 21 – April 12 Chosen for their artistry and unique perspective, this year’s annual exhibition of photographs featuring sculpture and sculptural objects as their subject was juried by Frank Peluso. Peluso, a NJ-based professional photographer, specializes in architectural photography depicting the built environment.

New Jersey/New York based artist Robert Lobe has been selected to exhibit a collection of his textured and patinated aluminum wall reliefs, made by hammering sheets of aluminum over natural forms in a technique similar to the tradition of repoussé. The exhibition will also feature three wall sculptures that incorporate the noted paintings of New York based painter Kathleen Gilje, on view in the West Gallery April 11, 2015 – January 17, 2016.

Karl Stirner: Decades in Steel

Karl Stirner: Decades in Steel explores the artist’s legendary welded and manipulated industrial forms which are often inspired by the huge sections of steel Stirner reclaims from steel manufacturing yards. His sculptures have influenced generations of sculptors including his son Jonas, whose works will be on view on the Museum Mezzanine.

This exhibition, on view on the Museum Mezzanine, reveals that the artist is a powerful and inventive metal sculptor who also served as one of Robert Rauschenberg’s assistants for 15 years at the renowned artist’s Captiva Island studio.

The DAB Mezzanine Gallery will feature the sculptural installations of Lauren Clay.

Clay works primarily in paper, which she hand-dyes, cuts, and reassembles into carefully constructed three dimensional forms. This exhibition will feature a series of works that are inspired by and tribute to the great American sculptor David Smith, with additional works throughout the gallery that are both playful and symbolic.

This is a unique opportunity to learn the stories behind Michael Graves’ architecture and products from the master himself. The Robert Schirmer Professor of Architecture, Emeritus at Princeton University, Graves has practiced architecture since 1964. Notable buildings of his include the Portland Building, the Swan and Dolphin Hotels at Walt Disney World, and the Newark Museum. In addition to architecture, Graves launched the Michael Graves Design Group, which designs functional products for everyday use from teapots to toasters. His firm has put an emphasis on what he calls “intuitive design,” meaning the function of well-designed product should be apparent. This artist talk is not to be missed! Frank Peluso, juror for this year’s Focus on Sculpture, will discuss his selection process and the photographic works on view. Peluso is a distinguished photographer who specializes in architectural photography depicting the built environment. In the past, he has served as the President of the Art Director’s Club of America and has received numerous awards for his photography, including Photographer of the Year from the Industrial Photographers of New Jersey.

BRUCE LINDSAY Thursday, March 5 11am–2pm Meet Bruce Lindsay, local sculptor, arts activist, and GFS instructor. Bruce is a professional sculptor and educator based in Trenton, New Jersey and has been actively creating sculpture in cast metals and glass for over thirty years. His sculptures Use of Memory and Between Essence and Existence, are part of the Sculpture Foundation permanent collection, and are sited at Grounds For Sculpture. Join Bruce for a lively discussion on the new technologies (like 3D printing) traditional sculptors are using to push their art in new directions.

MICHAEL REES Thursday, April 9, 11am–2pm Join us for a fascinating discussion of how formal sculptural concepts and new media technologies are influencing each other. Michael Rees works in sculpture, installation, animation, and interactive computing. His installation, Converge, is a new addition to GFS, and employs an animation/industrial mixture to confront technology and morality. He has exhibited his works at the Whitney Biennial, Bitforms, The Kemper Museum, and The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, among others. Rees is currently a professor of sculpture and digital media at William Paterson University, and Director of the Center for New Art there.

Join Korean-born guest artist Jae Ko for a fascinating discussion of her current East Gallery installation, Shiro—an 80-foot long paper installation—as well as her work in the Domestic Arts Building. Jae Ko works primarily with huge rolls of paper, transforming this everyday, common medium into works of fluid abstraction and beauty. She was one of ten national recipients of the 2012 “Anonymous Was a Woman” awards. Her work has been exhibited in countless solo and group shows.

Saturdays, March 7, 14, 21, and 28, 10am – 1pm Explore plein air painting using the invaluable practice of working with a limited color palette. Working with the complementary color palette of Michael Graves’ signature colors inspired by the Italian landscape, participants will learn how to create stronger designs, lighting, and atmosphere in their compositions by considering the importance of tonal contrast. Painting becomes quick and effortless when limitless color options are removed from the equation. Students will come away with a several works of their own. Demonstrations will be led by the instructor, who will also incorporate personal instruction, constructive group critiques, and some outdoor painting exercises, weather permitting. Students can choose to work in watercolor, oil, or acrylic. A complete materials list will be provided upon registration; participants will need to provide their own materials.

PIGMENTING PAPER Saturday, April 11, 11am – 5pm Take a hands-on approach to investigating the works of Jae Ko and Lauren Clay with this unique paper-making process which focuses on the basic techniques of pulp preparation, sheet forming, pressing, and drying. You’ll experiment with a variety of pigmented “pulp paint” and inclusions such as cotton and abaca. Demonstrations will include techniques in creating handmade paper from start to finish and the use of additives such as charcoal and found objects as represented in Lauren Clay’s work.

Students will finish the class with several unique sheets of handmade paper that can be used in any artist’s medium. This intensive workshop will be led by Instructor Kathleen Lang Metaxas whose education and mediums cross over between printmaking, papermaking, and sculptural book arts. Shulman captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with unforgettable images.

Sunday, March 22, 3pm Dialogue with Belmont Freeman, FAIA, Belmont Freeman Architects and Adjunct Associate Professor, Columbia University, GSAPP In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba’s National Art Schools on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Their radical architectural designs became the inspirational home to dancers, musicians, and artists from all over the country. But as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate.

Forty years later, the schools are in use but remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream.

FAMILY DROP-IN: LANDSCAPE-INSPIRED POETRY , 1 – 3pm Create poems inspired by Mother Nature and the beautiful landscape surrounding you. Your adventure begins with a brief demo by poet Colby Cedar Smith as she creates a poem and talks about her process. Then, families can work together to create their own poems. Join Rat’s resident wine guru Alan Hallmark on the third Friday of every month as he makes fine wine both approachable and fun during a tasting series sure to please the novice and aficionado alike. This year he will explore various beers and spirits as well. All tastings take place at the Toad Hall Gallery located across the courtyard from the entrance to Rat’s Restaurant.
