WE BELIEVE IN GRINDELWALD

The past year has had a strong impact on all of us. On an almost daily basis we were confronted with new facts, faced with difficult decisions and the ever-changing situation demanded great adaptability. Consistency in these uncertain times is of enormous value. That is why we are particularly pleased to present the Grindelwald Magazine now in its 6th Edition. It is important for us to present the magazine to the local population and guests of the region in its usual form and quality. As in the last five editions, we wanted to showcase this great region in which we live and work, portray people and convey ideas. This time, we followed in the footsteps of those who ensure the safety on and off the slopes in winter, went on a culinary journey around Grindelwald in summer, and visited the garden of a woman who is self-sufficient in all things culinary. The pandemic has, of course, also resonated and left deep scars in almost all areas. How do the people affected, deal with it? That is what we wanted to hear from Grindelwald‘s Director of Tourism and also from decision-makers in the GRIWA GROUP - which publishes this magazine. The articles are enriched with many tips on excursion destinations as well as shopping & eating. Sincere thanks go to all those who have helped to get this magazine on track; first and foremost to those who have provided information or collaborated in some way. We would also like to thank all the entrepreneurs who have enriched the magazine with advertisements and public notices making it possible to publish the magazine in its usual format. Without their help the realisation of the current Grindelwald Magazine would not have been possible! Now we hope for a summer that will give us all a boost! RESCUERS WITH COLD SNOUTS

They are one of the first on the scene in an avalanche emergency: Dog handlers and their specially trained avalanche dogs. Andreas Kaufmann knows why the four-legged friends have the edge in avalanche rescue despite modern technical aids - the Grindelwald native has been a dog handler for 18 years and leads the training in the Jungfrau Region.

oy runs across the prepared training field below Kleine Scheidegg with his muzzle close to the snow. Suddenly the Labrador seems electrified - he runs off determinedly and finally starts digging in the snow with his paws. „He‘s picked up a scent“ explains his master Andreas Kaufmann, who is watching his male dog carefully. As soon as Joy has freed the buried backpack from the snow, he is praised and rewarded by Kaufmann. Tail wagging, Joy stretches his nose in the air and again runs across the snow in search of more buried objects. „Every dog wants to search“ explains the group leader of the Jungfrau Region avalanche dog group. In order for the search in the snow to be successful and in addition to constant practice, it is the praise, encouragement and reward which are of central importance.

thing is that it is playful and animating for the dogs. You have to show the dog what you expect from him with joviality.“ During the winter season the Jungfrau Region’s ten dog handlers, including two women, and their four-legged friends meet once a month in the Grindelwald region to practise and consolidate what they have learnt. Six dogs and their owners are still in training; which is demanding and time-consuming (see box). After about two years of training, at home and in the snow, you are finally a trained dog handler and things get serious – depending on the avalanche event, one or more dog handlers are called out. “We are usually one of the first on the scene” explains the Grindelwald native. Speed saves lives Within ten minutes the dog handler on duty has to be ready with his dog,

Playfully searching for his handler A little further away, several dogs are sitting in the snow, a few barks and yelps can be heard. The animals are excitedly watching a fellow dog free his handler and another person from a snow cave. „We repeat these exercises in different variations throughout the winter“ Kaufmann explains. First, the dogs in training learn to look for their reference person in the snow and then for a stranger. Kaufmann knows that „the most important

equipped with ski boots, skis and backpack, to be picked up by the helicopter. Ideally, dog handlers work at their place of residence. „In winter I always have Joy with me when I am working“ says Kaufmann, who is responsible for winter services and the hiking trail network at the Grindelwald municipality. Even after 18 years as a dog handler, Kaufmann is nervous about every mission: „You never know what to expect on the ground.“ The most important goal, he says, is to save lives. Together with other trained rescuers, every effort is made to rescue anyone buried in an avalanche. The dog handler explains that „The first 15 minutes are the most important, after that the probability of survival decreases rapidly.” Dogs can smell human scent through several metres of snow. If buried people cannot be located with technical aids such as avalanche beacons or Recco, dogs are often their only chance of being found. Which is why the dog‘s good nose is still indispensable in a today‘s rescue.

„Others play golf“ However, sometimes all help comes too late and victims buried are either recovered dead or die on the way to hospital. Fortunately this doesn‘t happen very often, but it is still part of the dog handler’s daily routine. „It is important to talk about your feelings with your team colleagues and family“ says Kaufmann. The good team spirit amongst the rescuers is central for him and, of course, the joy with the animal. „A good

bond is the be-all and end-all for every dog handler“ Kaufmann emphasises. „I am grateful when I see that the dog is successful and that the great effort given at a young age has paid off“ says the 51-year-old man who has already trained his second avalanche dog named Joy. He says it is important to be patient and spend a lot of time with the dog. „That is not always easy for my family“ Kaufmann explains. He recalls that once on the way to the graduation party

of one of his three children, he had to turn around because he had been called to a mission. As a dog handler, he says, you have to make sacrifices; a dog is a time-consuming hobby. „Others go golfing“ Kaufmann says with a smile. However, there are many things that compensate him for the great effort: „When all the people involved come home healthy after a mission, that is one of the most beautiful moments for me“ Kaufmann explains and pats Joy lovingly on the back when he discovers another object in the snow. HOW TO BECOME A DOG HANDLER If you are interested in avalanche dog handler training then you have to invest a lot of time. Ideally the training starts when the dog is still a puppy, because the requirements for the entry test are high - the dog must obey commands with and without a leash and, among other things, stay put with other dogs when the owner moves away. Once this hurdle has been cleared, two winters follow with up to ten training days and several exercises such as the one on Kleine Scheidegg. Here the dog is introduced to searching in the snow in a playful way; first the dog searches for the owner in a snow cave, and in the next step this cave is closed with snow. Then a stranger is added. These procedures are practised again and again. At the end, the dog should be able to smell a stranger and objects in the snow and dig for it. Every year qualified dog handlers also attend further training and exercises. Operations are financially compensated, but exercises are not. Particularly suitable for training are dogs that are willing to work, are people-friendly and are no older than four years. The owners must be active alpinists - the missions take place in deep snow and in alpine terrain so touring skis and skins are always with them.

WINTERSPORT HELDEN DERBACKSTAGE BERGE

«BETTER ONE CHARGE MORE THAN ONE LESS»

Peter Bühler knows the Schilthorn area like the back of his hand: For 20 years he has been head of winter sports and, since 2011 he has also been head of ski slopes and rescue services at Piz Gloria. He particularly likes days with lots of fresh snow - then the 60-year-old and his team tackle the steep slopes with explosives.

Peter Bühler, what does it take for guests to know that the ski slopes are safe on the Schilthorn? Enough snow, good slope preparation, markings and the necessary safety measures against avalanches. We constantly monitor the snow situation and want to be sure that nothing happens.

which lifts can be opened. I meet with the team at 7:30 AM, after which control runs take place in the area. As soon as the slopes are open, I take care of the routine work, such as mending fences or shovelling snow.

10

15.11.2021 16:20:02

Why does it become critical with 30 centimetres of new snow? Just as important as the amount of new snow are the general conditions such as wind strength and temperatures. If large snowdrifts have formed with the fresh snow and there are already delicate sub-layers, critical avalanche situations can arise. In addition, some of the terrain on the Schilthorn is very steep; we blast here on up to 25 days per winter season, which is more often than is necessary in other ski areas. In total, we need about 1.5 tonnes of explosives per season. How do the blasting operations work? First, together with my deputy Toni von Allmen, we decide whether blasting is necessary and how it should be done. If flight conditions are favourable we will blast from the helicopter. The explosive device is primed and charged in the helicopter then dropped before it detonates. Ideally, the shock wave of the detonation triggers an avalanche. On the Schwarzgrat, near Birg, there are three fixed explosive masts that we can trigger from Mürren by radio. There are three more blasting masts located in the Blattwang/Kanonenrohr area and we also have two blasting cableways. Often we are out on skis to carry out avalanche blasting by hand.

Do things sometimes go wrong? Normally, blasting is not dangerous, but it does require intuition and experience and, you should be on the ball, especially when blasting by hand in the terrain when visibility is not optimal. It is important not to put yourself in danger. What can happen, is that the explosive device does not detonate and then we have to collect it again after a 15-minute wait. We keep a log in order to track all of the blasts made. Have the demands on safety increased in recent decades? In the past, the ski area tended to be closed on tricky days and there was less blasting. In connection with snow there is always a residual risk. However, today it is expected that nothing will happen. Avalanche accidents on the slopes are fortunately very rare. In any case, for us, safety comes first. We would rather use one explosive charge more than one less.

What motivates you to get into your ski boots almost every day? The first run in the morning! (laughs) Seriously, it‘s important to me that the conditions on the Schilthorn are as good as possible and that the guests enjoy skiing. I love the surroundings up here, I appreciate my 44-member team, I like to be outside and I prefer manual labour. There is always something to do, also on nice days; then there is time for the office work, which has to be done as well.

«IN THE MORNING, I NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN»

As a piste patroller, Nina Garbani looks after material and people: on the one hand, she ensures that the ski slopes are safe in the First ski area, and on the other hand she provides first aid in the event of emergency calls. On peak days the Grindelwald native and her team can be called out up to eight times.

wenty-five minutes in the gondola - that is how Nina Garbani‘s working day begins. From Grindelwald, the 41-year-old takes the first cable car up to the First at 2168 metres. „Here I can already get a first impression of the conditions in the area,“ explains the dark-blond woman. Arriving at the „headquarters“ of the piste service/SOS, situated under the restaurant terrace on the First, Nina Garbani and her team colleagues begin by discussing the situation. Visibility, wind, temperatures and the amount of fresh snow are all factors which influence her working day as a piste patroller. Afterwards they go on a control tour. „We put up arrow nets and check the signalling along the piste,“ explains Nina Garbani, who is always equipped with skis, a rescue backpack and a radio. Always on the alert As soon as the ski area is open, then things can start at any time, as in the event of an emergency call in the First area, in which case Nina Garbani and her team are alerted. „In the morning I never know quite what‘s going to happen. That is the exciting thing about the job,“ says the native of Grindelwald, who has been working as a piste patroller for the past eleven years. She arrives at the scene of an accident by snowmobile or skis and decides what to do depen-

ding on the situation. As Nina Garbani reports, „We experience the whole range - from people who are weak and need a little support to serious medical problems such as heart attacks or very serious accidents. It is important that the people are well looked after; for example, with a warming blanket or with

reassuring words.“ Depending on the severity of the injury, first aid is administered and the injured person is evacuated by rescue sledge or helicopter. It is essential to react quickly and keep a cool head which is no problem for the trained nurse and mother of two, who with her family, runs the Berghotel Faul-

It gets romantic at the end When asked about the best moments of her work and, after a moment’s thought, Nina Garbani says: „When a mission goes smoothly and all is well with the patient.” And, of course, when she can enjoy the view from Grindelwald‘s sun terrace in good weather. „I like the variety - being outdoors and active, doing manual and physical work, and undertaking rescue missions,“ says the sporty woman. Even as a child, she was fascinated by the work of patrollers, which includes technical missions such as avalanche blasting. The fact that she mostly works with men does not bother her. „I feel comfortable in this world,“ says the down-to-earth woman with a smile. So it‘s not surprising that Nina Garbani likes to get her hands dirty when it comes to maintaining and repairing equipment. ABOVE

On some days she and her team do up to eight jobs, but on others it is quiet. „It depends a lot on the slopes and the visibility,“ says the patroller, who fills the time she is not on duty with office work or cleaning up. JUNGFRAUBAHN

A NEW ERA AT THE EIGER The new Eiger Express between Grindelwald Grund and the Eiger Glacier passed its baptism of fire over the winter with flying colours - and this in the midst of the pandemic. No one could have expected such a start for the new railway.

hat has been a long journey finally came to an end in Grindelwald in mid December 2020. In the middle of the Corona pandemic, Jungfraubahn Holding AG opened its new gondola lift, the Eiger Express. The planning and construction period for the project which will benefit future generations lasted 12 years and had an investment of 470 million Swiss francs. The project had to overcome countless hurdles before it could be completed; the construction in the high alpine environment demanded a lot from all those involved. And of course, the story does not end there but rather a new chapter begins in the railway‘s already more than 100-year success story. The Eiger Express is a modern 3S railway that takes just 15 minutes from the new terminal in Grindelwald Grund to the Eigergletscher station. A park and ride station on the site of the former airfield in Matten/Interlaken has been planned for some time, together with a parking guidance system for the Lütschinen valleys. Negotiations are currently underway. Kathrin Naegeli hopes that these can be settled as soon as possible so that the project, which is important for the region, can be completed.

GRIWA DEVELOPMENT AG

THE BEST OF FOUR COMPANIES COMES TOGETHER – THE NEW GRIWA DEVELOPMENT AG In 2017, GRIWA PLAN AG which had started more than thirty years ago in Grindelwald by Founder and long-time Managing Director Markus Friedli became part of a new arrangement.

T

he various companies then worked together under the umbrella of GRIWA GROUP Holding AG: GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR AG (architecture, planning and construction), GRIWA TREUHAND AG (real estate, marketing, sales & management), GRIWA RENT AG (management and rental of

holiday flats and chalets) and GRIWA INTERIOR AG (interior design concepts for private individuals and companies). Each individual company offers its own services. However, because there is often an overlap in requirements, for example if a client acquires a property through GRIWA TREUHAND and would like to structurally adapt it, or is looking for help with

20

furnishings, then the synergy within the companies works well. It is not uncommon for an acquired holiday home to have the services of GRIWA RENT for the rental. Nevertheless there are different, although interlinked, contact persons. GRIWA DEVELOPMENT was founded to simplify communication and to be able to work efficiently; especially on larger projects. It brings together the know-how of the various GRIWA companies in a targeted manner. CREATING PROJECTS AS A TOTAL ENTERPRISE The new GRIWA DEVELOPMENT focuses on the development and creation of challenging projects as a Total and General Contractor. GRIWA DEVELOPMENT combines the know-how built up over many years by the other four companies in the fields of architecture, sales and marketing, administration and renting out, as well as furnishing and interior design. In this way, all the services required for projects such as apartment buildings, residential developments, service centres, hotels and other investment properties are offered specifically from a single source. The integration of GRIWA DEVELOPMENT into the GRIWA GROUP also has the advantage in that the company can draw on a large network of partners and contacts. A CENTRAL CONTACT POINT GRIWA DEVELOPMENT is an universal contact point for customers, and one which creates a straightforward means of access to all the services offered by the GRIWA GROUP. As a reliable partner, it is responsible for all steps of a project: from project planning (including all preliminary clarifications) through to the planning and the construction; to marketing and management of the investment properties. Clients therefore have a single contractual partner which undoubtedly greatly simplifies all planning and communication before and during the project.

THE SERVICES AT A GLANCE: Organisation Project management Analysis of development possibilities, profitability assessment, value creation, clarifications with authorities (local, regional, governmental, natural hazards, etc.) Project studies and construction-specific clarifications. GRIWA TREUHAND AG

ALIPNE LIVING - YOUR PARTNER IN THE BERNESE OBERLAND GRIWA TREUHAND AG has, for the past 25 years, been a dependable partner for marketing and managing real estate throughout the Bernese Oberland. The team attaches great importance to giving personal advice and does everything in its power to simplify the processes involved in property management.

T

he aim of GRIWA TREUHAND is to make things easier for its clients by working together. The sale of a plot of land or a property presents major challenges, from setting the sales price in line with the market, to answering all the questions that constantly arise. Many property owners simply do not have the time to make all the legal, procedural and financial clarifications. Comprehensive advice is therefore a top priority for GRIWA TREUHAND. The firm accompanies

clients through the entire process of a real estate transaction, procuring all necessary information and preparing detailed sales documentation in two languages, providing added value and clarity for both buyer and seller. Floor plans are produced individually for each project, and digital documentation, including photographs and 3-D recordings for virtual tours, are a matter of course. Clients also receive support in legal and financial matters which may need to be clarified. GRIWA TREUHAND also prepares the notarisation, organises the final

cleaning and the electrical inspection, and finally the handover to the new owners. In order for a purchase to proceed smoothly, the prospective buyers must also receive comprehensive information. Should disagreements arise, GRIWA TREUHAND and its trained team can mediate between the parties and search for a solution in conjunction with all those involved. Since 1995, GRIWA TREUHAND has been familiar with the market in the Bernese Oberland and has built up a large network. For many years, the company has also been supported by an experienced architecture team, GRIWA ARCHITEKTUR, which, like GRIWA TREUHAND, is part of the GRIWA GROUP. This adds the finishing touch to the possible advice for clients, as specialists are also available for conversion or renovation work. There is also a close cooperation with the other companies of the GRIWA GROUP. For example, clients can obtain furnishing ideas from GRIWA INTERIOR or even have entire individual furnishing concepts created. In addition a newly acquired holiday home can be rented out when not in use by its owner via GRIWA RENT. GRIWA TREUHAND has two office locations, one in Grindelwald (where the company was established) and one in Interlaken Ost, close to the railway station. Proximity to the region is an important part of the company‘s identity. GRIWA TREUHAND is a secure fixture in the Bernese Oberland. Not only do they know how the region „ticks“ but they also have a dynamic commitment to this lpine region. The team is proud to be able to work and live in such a great place and stop at nothing in order to pass on this enthusiasm to its clients. Are you also interested in making your dream come true of having a home in a mountain wonderland? GRIWA TREUHAND will be more than happy to help you!

«FURNISHING PROJECTS ARE OUR PASSION» At GRIWA INTERIOR AG almost everything revolves around furnishings and design. However, there is so much more to the Interlaken furniture store that has become known as the „Wohncenter von Allmen“. Marco Niederberger, managing director of GRIWA INTERIOR, explains why.

Marco Niederberger, you are the managing director of GRIWA INTERIOR AG. What is „good“ furnishing for you, what does it depend on? Good furnishing is more than just furnishing a room. The furniture, the colours, the fabrics used, the lighting and their adaptation to the needs of the occupants play a major role. Good furnishings are individual and adapted to the customer‘s needs, which is why we attach great importance to a close relationship with our customers. In our showroom you get a feel for the furnishings, see them as they would be in reality, and our advisors are on hand to deal directly with the customer. Personal contact and a close cooperation with the customer is very important, especially when implementing extensive interior design projects, both for the redesign of one‘s own home as well as the modernisation of office space, or the lifestyle furnishing of a restaurant or hotel. That means you plan the new furnishings for existing rooms? Among other things, yes. However, a furnishing concept involves much more than just furnishing a room. What is important is the overall effect, the atmosphere that uniquely characterises that room. The furniture plays just an important role here as the textiles used for the curtains, the choice of materials for floor and wall coverings, as well as appealing colours and the right lighting. A furnishing concept takes all elements into account and coordinates them with each other.

Does that mean that with a furnishing concept from GRIWA INTERIOR, you have to completely remodel? Not necessarily. Everything is possible, from a brush renovation to a total refurbishment. Sometimes a great effect can be achieved with just a little paint and a few new pieces of furniture. The type and size of the adjustments to the room design depend on various factors and are generally assessed differently for each client. At the beginning of such a consultation we analyse the needs of our clients. In a second step, we discuss possible measures, solutions and, of course, the budget. Only in the third step budget and products are brought to harmony and from this the individual customer-specific furnishing concept is developed. How do you find the right concept for your customers? There is no such thing as THE perfect concept, every customer is different. For example, two restaurants may be similar in terms of use, but completely different in terms of colour and interior design. In our three-stage development phase, we filter out the local conditions, the important information and needs, which then result in the perfect furnishing concept for the respective person and location in close cooperation with the customer. The intensive exchange between our furnishing planners and the customer is very important to us!

How does the customer receive such a furnishing concept? We welcome any contact, at any time, without obligation. After the initial contact we will sit down together and address the various needs before we start with the concept. We plan for private individuals as well as for businesses. We are always happy to work creatively. Selling furniture is a great thing, but interior design projects are our greatest passion. What impact does Corona have on your company‘s services? Normally our showroom is always open; if permitted. In addition, we are also available to our customers online. They can contact us by phone as well as by email and we can offer initial consultations by phone. These can be booked in advance via our website. Many of our furniture pieces are now also available in our online shop.

VISIT US ONLINE GRIWA INTERIOR, formerly known to many as „Wohncenter von Allmen“, is located in the Jungfraucenter near Interlaken Ost railway station. On the website you will find a lot of useful information on current topics as well as descriptions of all the brands on offer. Various products are also available directly with the online shop. Contact can also be made via digital channels for more comprehensive advice on furnishing matters. TOURISM Am ocri patuisquam,

«SKIING IS SIMPLY GOOD FOR PEOPLE‘S PSYCHE» Grindelwald’s Director of Tourism, Bruno Hauswirth, on key moments in the Corona pandemic, solidarity and strategies for the future.

How is Grindelwald doing in these turbulent months? It is not an easy time for anyone. When I look at the overnight stays in 2020, it is clear it was a bad year. Grindelwald recorded one million overnight stays - in comparison for 2019 it was 1.35 million, an absolute record. That is a bitter blow, and yet, I think it could have been much worse. If you look not only at overnight stays, but also at bed occupancy and the average price, Grindelwald is still in the top 3 Alpine tourist resorts in Switzerland. What about the Swiss guests? Can they absorb part of the slump?

The major bank UBS has analysed the most important tourist locations in Switzerland; according to this data, Grindelwald was able to generate the largest increase in domestic guests. That is nice, but it should not hide the fact that the year 2020 didn‘t live up to expectations.

What was the distribution of guests in terms of their origin before the pandemic? In recent years, we have always had a mix of about one third of visitors from Switzerland, one third from North America and Europe and one third from Asia. That has now become more or less the situation. Now we can see that it was right to focus

26

GrindelwaldMagazin_21_22_Winter_EN.indd 26

15.11.2021 16:22:16

on different markets, so we can keep the risk smaller if there is a sudden slump somewhere. We definitely want to stick to this strategy, as well as to the idea of establishing Grindelwald more as a year-round destination. It is great that many hotels are open all year round and of course the Jungfraujoch also plays an important role here as a seasonally independent destination.

and I am happy about what has been worked out together in Grindelwald. I think we have also developed further from a social point of view; the way we deal with each other has changed. One example of this is the „Solidarity Fund“, which was set up by the Grindelwald Trades and Crafts Association. Financial resources for marketing measures have been pooled into it. This solidarity has impressed me.

The Corona period brought many regional differences to light. There was a debate in Swiss cities about whether it is right to allow ski resorts to keep operations open... The debate about ski resorts was one that made us really nervous. I am glad the Federal Council stood firm and did not order a stop to the ski resorts. Of course, we were all relieved to see that skiing was not a driver of the pandemic. On the contrary, I personally believe that it was good for people‘s psyche to be able to ski. The psychological effects of this crisis should by no means be underestimated.

And what do you expect in concrete terms? 2021 will be a difficult year, we still do not have an easy health policy situation, there are various travel restrictions and the transport companies will first have to increase their capacity levels again so that it will then be possible to travel. Whether we can attract additional Swiss guests to Grindelwald remains to be seen. At the moment we are mainly working on the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The local markets are more likely to get going again, while intercontinental tourism will certainly take some time. We all have to live with these uncertainties. But I am convinced that Grindelwald is, and will, remain a very attractive tourist destination.

What did you tell your foreign colleagues where skiing was banned? It was really hard for the places affected and I noticed that some people rubbed their eyes because of these differences. It is like a lot of questions that came up during this whole time, you would not have thought many things were possible before. The operation of the ski facilities was absolutely central for us and we were also able to benefit from the newly opened V-Bahn. The capacity levels have increased and the valley runs have become much more attractive because you no longer have to wait so long at the bottom stations. It is actually like having a new ski area where the guests are well distributed. Even though no one could have foreseen this, but in terms of the Corona measures it was ideal. In that respect, a stroke of luck? It always takes several factors, or a functioning interplay, to achieve a positive development. Good offers from service providers such as railways and accommodation establishments were absolutely central for us. We had a „V-Bahn effect“ and I hope this will also be noticeable in the summer. It is also great that with the opening of the Hotel Bergwelt in Grindelwald we also have a new offer in the hotel industry, the opening date at the beginning of summer is a strong sign. However, there were also difficult events during the winter, such as the cancellation of the Lauberhorn races, which are eminently important for us, or the fuss about the many Corona cases in Wengen – the tourism industry is immediately affected by these things. What do you think in general: How will the summer of 2021 be for the tourist resort of Grindelwald? We have already tried in the last few years to boost the interest of tourists from Switzerland, especially with TV commercials,

DEEP PARTNERSHIP WITH UNESCO

In the future, Grindelwald will work more closely with the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Foundation. The aim of the cooperation is to bring the values of the area closer to the visitors in the simplest and most direct way possible and to demonstrate the uniqueness. The area of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch covers an area of 824 square kilometers, which is almost the entire area of the high Alps in the border area between the cantons of Valais and Bern. This landscape is not only breathtakingly beautiful, it also provides extremely valuable information about the formation of mountains and glaciers, as well as about current climate change.

HOMEOFFICE The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the working world in Switzerland. Many employees now regularly work from home, in the so-called home office. Even after the pandemic is over, home office is here to stay. But it brings new challenges and labor law issues for employers and employees, regardless of Covid-19. Below you will find answers to individual questions.

15 KILOMETRES - YOU CAN NOT GO FURTHER Admittedly, the sledge run from the Faulhorn to Grindelwald has to be earned - it takes up to 2 ½ hours to climb the prepared hiking trail from Bussalp or First to the Faulhorn at 2680 metres. Once you have made the ascent, the longest sledge run in the world awaits you: a whole 15 km can be covered from the Faulhorn to Grindelwald. The fastest sledgers can cover the distance in 30 minutes. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can take a break in the Bussalp mountain restaurant or in one of the bars along the way. There is even more tobogganing fun for the whole family opposite, with the Fox Run on the Lauberhorn and the Eiger Run below the North Face. The latter can even be experienced at night, on the illuminated toboggan run from Alpiglen to Brandegg. www.jungfrau.ch

FIRST ADRESS FOR FREESTYLERS No less than an Olympic champion ensures that the halfpipe on the First is perfectly shaped: Gian Simmen, who won gold in the halfpipe in 1998, has been responsible for the Snow Park in the First area at Jungfraubahn since 2016. Together with his team, the former snowboard pro has made the park the first port of call for all freestyle enthusiasts in the Bernese Oberland. The Oberjoch Park is suitable for beginners or a warm-up round; with its small kickers, rails and boxes, you can playfully try your hand at jumping. Those who already have experience will get their money‘s worth in the Bärgelegg park or in the halfpipe. For those who want to try their hand at ski cross, a trip to the Schilt ski lift is recommended: Here, a 900 metre-long, varied course is always prepared. It is also suitable for families. www.jungfrau.ch
