I’m a designer currently pursuing my Bachelor of Architectural Studies at the University of Waterloo. Through architecture, I’m drawn to exploring the possibilities for sustainable practices at various scales. I’m fascinated by how sustainable design can impact both the environment and human psychology, and I love diving into the technical side of architecture, especially building science and construction details.

Right now, I’m also working towards becoming a LEED Green Associate.

One initiative I’m especially excited about is the Architects Against Housing Alienation campaign. We’ve had the opportunity to advocate for housing and land rights through the Canadian pavilion at the 2023 Venice Biennale, where we brought attention to these issues on an international stage.

Sir/Madam,

May 3, 2022

I am writing this letter of reference for Grishaa Ganesh, who interned with me for one coop semester from January through April of 2022.

I was extremely pleased with Grishaa’s design skills, which exceeded what I expected from a second year architectural student. I typically work with experienced luxury designers and architects, and Grishaa ended up working on aspects of a luxury residential project I would normally expect a more seasoned designer to tackle. She was primarily involved in developing interior design details, modeling the plan in Rhino, producing renderings in Enscape, and modifying the schematic design and construction details in Revit.

She worked remotely, communicating with me via phone, email, and Zoom. She demonstrated good discipline in working remotely and had the ability to take a conceptual discussion and realize it with multiple proposed design solutions. I came to rely on her design judgement in helping me choose between competing solutions, a bonus I did not expect when I hired her.

She also had a good attitude and was always pleasant to work with, and I am confident she would work well in a larger team environment. I worked on this project with Grishaa and Abby Schwartz, an experienced residential architect who I frequently collaborate with, and I am confident Abby would recommend her highly as well as Abby repeatedly commented on how impressed she was by her skill as a 2nd year. Since Abby has a great deal of experience with students as an adjunct professor at Moore College of Art & Design I believe her judgement is meaningful.

I have told Grishaa that I would be interested in hiring her for future coop terms but I am offering this reference with the knowledge that she needs to choose the coop opportunity that best aligns with her education and goals. Please feel free to call me if you wish to discuss my experience, but I have no hesitation in offering my recommendation.

Re: Letter of Recommendation - Grishaa Ganesh

STUDIO V is an award-winning, research-driven architectural and urban design practice based in New York City. Our work is diverse and encompasses a range of complex and mixed-use urban projects including arts, cultural, residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, hospitality, and mixed use.

To Whom It May Concern:

As a student intern from September 2022 to December 2022, Grishaa was a valued member and engaged closely with our team of designers and architects. She exhibited enthusiasm, a rigorous approach to design and creativity. Grishaa also had a range of experience in our Studio, from research, creating diagrams, drawing technical documents (both in AutoCAD and REVIT), developing presentations, taking meeting minutes, and supporting our teams.

I am pleased to offer this letter of recommendation for Grishaa Ganesh. I am happy to recommend Grishaa for the skills and talents she displayed as an Architectural Intern in my architectural practice in New York City, STUDIO V Architecture.

As a mid-sized but internationally recognized design practice, our Studio is selective of the interns we hire. Grishaa proved herself through her work on a broad range of unusual and diverse projects. These included both large and smaller architectural designs as well as master plans. The projects to which Grishaa contributed included a residential tower (247 North Avenue in New Rochelle), a midrise residential building in the Gowanus neighborhood in NYC (335 Bond Street), and a master plan to reinvent one of the country’s first outdoor malls into a mixed use residential village in Yonkers, NY (Cross County Center).

A healthy mindset, a sustainable future

“The

Garden” Toronto, ON

This project’s main focus is to create a sustainable community through architecture and agriculture practices. Along with a library, I chose the additional program to be a garden and kitchen. Given its close proximity to the Don Valley Park, I wanted this project to reflect a similar nature immersive experience. However, unlike a park which tends to have linearity in terms of social interaction, this community center is designed with the intention to encourage social connectivity between the various people of the community. This bond will help appreciate the care and energy put into bringing food to the table as there is often a disconnect between the consumers and the source in urban settings. This not only creates a healthier mindset towards food but also creates food security in the community.

The design choices were carefully considered to ensure passive heating, cooling and daylighting to minimize energy use. The possibility of a composting system to offset heating costs was briefly explored.

Connectivity through simple design

“Under The Canopy” Broadmoor Lake in Edmonton, AB

This project, completed for the CISC Competition, is a series of canopies by the lakefront. This simple and functional design provides shelter for the vendors at the weekly farmer’s market. It is a structure through which we intend the community to connect with their local businesses. Additionally, the space can be used for a variety of outdoor activities and visitors can enjoy the summer sun.

Taking inspiration from static sun shades in a nearby park, we have designed a network of retractable hypar canopies offering relief from wet weather, and full views of the sky when the sun is shining. The canopies can be easily removed or retracted when not required.

The power of self-sustenance

“The Oasis” The Beaches in Toronto, ON

This off grid housing is designed for two architecture students. With the idea of adaptability and net zero energy in mind, we created a boathouse. With the constant shift in water levels due to climate change, it was fitting to pick a floating structure. Additionally, The climate, wind directions and sun orientation were analyzed using Climate Consultant to maximize passive heating, cooling and daylighting while minimizing energy use. Other energy and heating demands are met with the solar panel system.

The materials were carefully chosen to reduce the overall embodied carbon energy of the house. This included charred wood, repurposed timber, recycled plastic, reused plastic barrels, hemp batt insulation, etc. The wall construction was thoughtfully planned for air-tightness and optimal energy efficiency.

A ‘tiny’ solution for a major challenge
“Tiny Cambridge,House”ON

This group initiative was an opportunity to learn hands-on skills in various parts of construction. The ultimate intent of this project is to showcase architecture as an accessible means for those who are experiencing homelessness in marginalized communities. Specifically, the project is to address the indigenous community within the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area as we acknowledge that we occupy their land and that Homelessness and displacement is a major challenge within the indigenous community.

Our group mainly worked on the interiors of the house. We installed the pvc flooring, the bathroom attachments such as the grab-bars and shower curtain rods. We added some finishes to the walls as well as a foldable table to further enhance the space.

The Project was submitted to and displayed by the City of Cambridge.

A sculptural experiment

“Flow”

This sculpture is an experimentation of materials, form, and structure. It is exploring the idea of felxibility with rigid materials. The composition of the three dimensional piece was captured through photographs as well as a contour line sketch.

To create the tension between the rods, a grid-like system of blocks was integrated. Holes were perpendicularly drilled onto rectangular prism blocks to insert the evenly cut rods.
