Architecture to me is a more than just the creation of space but it’s about the questioning of the spaces we live in, play in and work in. I have always wanted to be an architect, since my childhood days spent watching BBC home renovations, fascinated by the ingenuity of the art of transformation the architects performed.

This developed into a passion of drawing (a basic standard start for most architects) and poetry, but my inspiration for the field was different. I always looked up to Leonardo Da Vinci as he was not only a symbol of accomplishment but one of oddity. He was not conventional and as such I hoped my architecture would be dynamic and unique .

Therefore studying architecture not only showed me that was possible but also opened my eyes to a world beyond my wildest dreams. Becoming more than just aesthetics but the meaning and purpose behind why spaces are important in society and their ability to confront, define and change.

That is the architecture I am passionate about, one that chooses to be a confrontation of normalcy, a definition of reality and a statement to the arbitrary-one that is Audacious.

‘ENJAMBMENT’AN EXHIBITION.

Type: Academic(collaborative project) Year: 2022 Location: UJ STHI parking,Auckland Park Level: Junior year(1 semester)

Design Brief:

In this project, architecture students and interior design students were paired up to create a pop-up stand that would serve all disciplines within FADA. The design needed to be self-standing, last for one month, and be easily disassembled.

The primary goal was to engage users, pique their interest, and, most importantly, provide knowledge.

Conceptual Approach:

Initially, the journey was a challenging endeavor as we sought the most effective approach. After careful consideration and collective brainstorming, our group embarked on a creative exploration. The initial concept involved a literal circular screen that would showcase students’ work and introduce people to various disciplines. However, through a process of trial and error, I proposed a more abstracted approach that transformed the nine disciplines into way-points throughout the journey. This shift in perspective placed a strong emphasis on storytelling and identity within our concept, as elaborated in the accompanying sketches on the right. In essence, our final design evolved into an exhibition that relied less on physical displays and more on printed representations of the disciplines, digitally rendered onto wooden facades. This approach aimed to immerse visitors in the journey as they circled the design, with the wind and natural environment enhancing the overall experience. This innovative approach inspired the project’s title, “Enjambment.” The title encapsulates the idea that all the diverse disciplines within FADA seamlessly flow into one another, forming interconnected pieces that, when combined, create the complete puzzle.

BATH-HOUSE AND MARKET OF QUEER DEFENCE AND DEFIANCE.

Type: Academic(Bathhouse recreational) Year: 2022 Location: Helen Joseph Street( the corner) and the Highway-Newtown Level: Junior year(1 semester)

Design Brief:

In this project, our task was to explore and revitalize the city of Johannesburg, with a primary focus on Newtown, a significant heritage site. Our mission involved investigating the connection between material culture and human experiences in Newtown across various urban scales. Subsequently, we received a new directive, stemming from our thorough site analysis and group collaboration, which required us to create innovative spaces. Our challenge was to design a public changing room that could undergo physical transformation or evoke a profound metaphorical change in individuals, all in alignment with the overarching theme of the semester—queer politics.

Conceptual Approach:

Starting this project was undeniably challenging. I was unsure about how to design a space that not only met the project requirements but also embodied the essence of queer politics and inclusivity. Inspired by the readings we delved into at the start of the semester, I was struck by the concept of challenging societal norms and creating spaces that provoke introspection. The concept evolved from a market, daycare, nightclub, and public change room into something more profound following the below ideology: Public Change room Gathering space

I was heavily inspired by Elly Joel’s own rendition of the Bathhouse of Queer defence based in Puerto Rico as well as the idea of the interactive use and play aspects of the bathrooms by Joel Sanders.

Exploring Newtown through mapping Exploring the idea of bathing as a Ritual of cleansing Starting with a basic locality map, we aimed to chart current street activity and network usage.

This was crucial for me to grasp how movement operates in the area.

The site analysis assists in grasping the intricacies of figure-ground and Nolly maps, enabling us to gain insights from the built environment and effectively convey Newtown’s unique identity in our designs.

To construct the bathhouse, I leveraged the site information obtained from our mapping to carve out distinct spaces for each phase, ensuring a seamless and efficient construction process.

SHIFTING PARADIGMS.

Type: Academic(Residential building) Year: 2023 Location: Katjiepiering street Park-Fietas Level: Senior Year(1 semester)

Design Brief:

The brief inspired by the theme of Sustainable Urbanism required us first in groups to explore the neighbourhood of Fietas looking for open spaces. Then once chosen we were to analysis the site with regards to context, structure, place making which would contribute to our own projects.

Secondly we then ares to look at the SDG(sustainable development goals) and sustainable urbanism to create a mixed use residential building that catered to the senior citizens of 40 retired people.

Conceptual Approach:

For our mapping we wanted to investigate the area of our chosen site after our walk around Fietas which we choose as Katjiepiering street(from the UJ entrance to the park). We wanted to map out Fietas from the point of view of a local so trying to expose the contents of our site. It was imperative to understanding how we could redesign not only our own building but the public spaces on our site.

For my design proposal, I crafted a manifesto around the creation of a space that allows the synthesis of Fieta’s past and present for the future. As such I wanted to design for the elderly as they are often neglected from our societal interactions and i wanted to place this design in the park to allow for it to be the intersectionality between both the past of Fietas(the old homes around the park) and the present(the university)- thus titled ‘Shifting Paradigms’.

Situated in the site of the former Fietas park, the design form was inspired by the shape of the park and but allowing openings to open and lifting the building up it allows the building to appear lighter and floating. Most of the ground floor is left to the public and the rest above are private residential for the elder. The design focuses most views inwards towards an open air courtyard with a large elm tree situated in the centre near a performance seating area.

The spaces of Intense activity map was meant to show how on our site they are specific hotspots by which we could design our public area. As such it was useful in understanding not only activity but they movement of the residents and their spaces.

THE ESSENCE OF SOUTH AFRICA IS A STRONG SNESE OF UBUNTU AND YET THE TOWN OF FIETAS HAS LOST ITS SENSE OF UNITY/BUNTU. THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY CAN BE REASTABLISHED THROUGH A COMMON PUBLIC SPACE FOR SELF-EXPRESSION AND FREDOM. THE PARK, WHICH WAS INTENDED TO BE THIS PLACE OF “UBUNTU” HAS BECOME THE EXACT OPPOSITE. IF WE, AS ARCHITECTS TASKED WITH REDESIGNING FIETAS TO BE MORE COHERENT, IGNORE THIS FACT, THE YOUTH OF FIETAS WILL NOT KNOW THE MEANING OF UBUNTU AND THE PURPOSE OF THE PARK/FOCAL POINT WILL BE LOST

KNOCKANDO HALLS: STUDENT RESIDENCE.

Type: (Technical)Residential Housing Year: 2023 Location: Parktown Level: Senior Year(2nd semester)

Design Brief:

This brief required us to re-design an existing student residence based in Parktown using new materialistic approaches taught to us by the lectures, throughout the semester. Using steel and concrete we were then required to showcase our design and technical capabilities with this project.

Conceptual Approach:

My approach to this project aimed to create a structure that seamlessly harmonizes lightness and robustness. This was achieved through the utilization of reinforced concrete for the basement, employing a bottom-up construction method. The establishment of a solid foundation was realized by implementing 256x256mm galvanized steel I-section columns to support the upper steel structural system, which features 480mm castellated beams distributed throughout the building. In order to introduce a lightweight system, rather than opting for traditional brick-infill walls for the dormitory partitions, I made the conscious choice of utilizing Aerated concrete. This material not only possesses enhanced strength but also offers a lighter alternative to conventional brick, all the while maintaining the building’s authentic character through the use of light red clay face bricks.

The ground floor plan was thoughtfully tailored to cater to the students, featuring amenities such as a gaming room, outdoor seating areas, a dining hall, and an auditorium with wooden interior cladding for sound insulation.

Continuing the development of the design, various services have been thoughtfully integrated throughout the building, encompassing water regulation, drainage systems, HVAC, lighting, and fire safety. Additionally, strict adherence to SANS 10400 regulations and South African Building Guidelines has been maintained to ensure the project’s compliance with relevant standards.

THE CONTEMPLATION OF EXPECTATION.

Type: Academic(Community Mural) Year: 2023 Location: Riet Avenue( Westbury) Level: Senior Year(1 semester)

Design Brief:

In this brief we were required to create a Mural that should be a graphic representation of a Philosophy/message that is contextually relevant to Westbury history and current societal interactions. It was required to not only carry a message but to be aesthetically pleasing, well composed, colour co-ordinated and had to cover a wall of 5000mm(wide)x 2500mm(high).

Conceptual Approach:

Westbury is one of South Africa’s oldest townships having been formed during the 1880s while it was called Newlands Location. It was not until it was marketed towards Africans( becoming one the first black owned lands) that it inherited it’s Westbury name. Regarded as a coloured township( due to most of the coloured people being relocated to the area during the forced removals and segregation). Westbury had become notorious for it’s gang violence, crime and poverty stricken nature. These social issues which ravaged westbury soon led to the 2018 protest after a young woman and her niece were caught between a gang dispute. In this regard I believe that it was important to create a mural that not only acknowledged these social issues but also choose to express the vibrancy of Westbury. Because regardless of all the issues that Westbury encountered they always come together as a community to support one another. My mural attempts to expose the hidden vibrancy that dwells within Westbury to demonstrate the intersectionalities that exist. By using the mixing and matching of vibrant colours, hues and geometric forms to reveal the social interactions between different people that take place and above all else to show that Westbury will continue to stand strong in the face of adversary.

Shall my past be a story i tell
