CRUFTS 2019: DYLAN WINS BEST IN SHOW

A papillon named Dylan has been crowned Best in Show at the 2019 Crufts dog show. The winning canine beat six other finalists to claim the show’s top honour on Sunday. Dylan, owned by Kathleen Roosens, was also named winner of the Toy group earlier in the four-day dog show. An excellent performance for an animal of less than three years old.

FLASHBACK We’re going back in time…

130 years ago, in 1889, the Griffon Bruxellois “Marquis” (LOSH 1933) became the very first Belgian Champion and the very first Club Champion.

Ch. Marquis was owned by Mr. Jean Van Cauter from Brussels.

This Griffon Bruxellois was bred by M. Béguinne from Brussels.

“Lack” (LOSH 1939), was born 1887, and was the first son of ­­Ch. Marquis. Both can be seen on the litho from 1894, that was first published in Volume 14 of the magazine “Chasse et Pêche”.

DOCTOR WOOF WHAT IS REVERSE SNEEZING? “Reverse sneezing is a common ­phenomenon in dogs, where a sniffing sound is made during inhalation.

It is usually an innocent disorder but can still be frightening for the owner.

Symptoms For a few seconds or minutes your dog will make a snoring or sniffing noise.

The dog tries to swallow and usually holds his head up. Sometimes the whole chest is pulled along during this episode.

For some people it seems as if the dog is choking, that the dog is stuffy.

In between the dog behaves perfectly normal.

Causes Often there is no cause for reverse sneezing.

It is often provoked by dogs that are very enthusiastic (e.g. when the owner comes home), pulling on a leash or while eating or drinking.

If the symptoms suddenly worsen it is sometimes necessary to do further research.

The cause may be a foreign object in the nose or throat, an anatomical problem (long palate) or a neoplastic process.

Treatment There is no specific treatment for reverse sneezing.

The problem is often solved if you can provoke a swallowing reflex.

You can do this by rubbing the dog’s throat until he swallows or keeps the nostrils closed.

The reverse sneezing normally stops after a while.

Is it dangerous?

Reverse sneezing is not dangerous or life-threatening for the dog, even though it seems scary for the owner.

As proud representatives of our beautiful Belgian breeds, we found this date ideal to put our Small Griffons, Small Brabants, Papillons and Phalenes in the spotlight.

The club show takes place in Lier, more info can be found on the flyer on page 10.

The invited judge is Mrs. Chantal van Raamsdonk-Blatter.

CLUBMATCH 2019

Cynological curriculum vitae of Chantal van Raamsdonk-Blatter

In the eighties I came into contact with the French Bulldog. The parents of my friend, now husband, were the owners of the famous kennel “De la Parure”.

Since then I have been infected by the “cynological virus” and have been involved in the breeding and showing of the French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Bull Mastiff and Old English Mastiff.

From that moment on I was surrounded by many dogs and different breeds. Since I met these great breeds, I was “infected” and dedicated myself and my husband to the kennel. During the first years I helped with the kennel, puppies and of course I went to shows at home and abroad a lot. I was lucky to spend a lot of quality time with some of the biggest pioneers, breeders and judges in different breeds.

Besides taking care of our dogs, I also started to show an interest in showing dogs. I have shown a lot of dogs and together with the family we have travelled all over the world with our dogs.

After my husband passed his exams and became a judge, I decided that I also wanted to become a judge.

At the moment I am an active judge for different breeds in Group 2, 3, 9, and judge trainee for Group 4.

I am very proud of what I have achieved so far but I continue to develop myself as a breeder, handler and judge in order to serve our beloved breeds even better in the near future.

TICKS AND FLEAS ARE COMING

Prevention is better than cure

You love to walk in the woods, you love to let your dog out to have fun with you in the vast nature. Or quite simply, you will soon be leaving on holiday with him...

Attention: the ticks and the fleas are lurking again. Despite the proverb “small animals have never eaten large ones...”, they still carry several potentially dangerous diseases for man’s best friend.

The tick... a dangerous parasite for the dog Ticks are widely distributed animals, which are part of the large family of acarids (in this family we also find the spiders). These parasites are a risk all year round, but are particularly active in spring and autumn: hidden in the undergrowth, in shrubs or hedges, ticks literally fall on the animal’s skin and as soon as they notice contact, they bite to feed themselves with blood.

The tick can transmit different types of extremely dangerous par-

asites to the dog, including those responsible for Babesiosis (a disease that activates the breakdown of red blood cells), or the parasite responsible for Lyme disease.

Ticks are much more dangerous because of the deadly diseases they transmit than because of the amount of blood they can absorb from their host.

Halt to the ticks!

Ticks often look for a place in their host where the skin is thin: the head and the ears. Nevertheless, you should not skip any body zone when checking your dog for parasites.

When removing the tick, be particularly careful with the technique you are using. The tick has the ability to attach itself by anchoring its head in the upper layer of the skin, leaving the body outside the host organism.

To remove the tick correctly, use an appropriate pair of tongs to twist the tick’s body and remove the entire parasite. If, in case of an incident, the head remains behind, consult your veterinarian to prevent a possible infection at this place.

In order to avoid previous unpleasant actions, you should especially ensure a prevention of this infestation.

Fleas... another important parasitic infection in the dog Fleas are very often a year-round problem in the dog. Indeed, without the knowledge of the inhabitants, fleas can easily multiply and infect an entire environment in a few weeks time. Between April and November, however, a peak in prevalence can be observed frequently.

Adult fleas are parasites that, like ticks, feed on the blood of the animal they infect. The stings of fleas cause severe itching and can be accompanied by allergic phenomena, both in dogs and humans.

The life cycle of the flea begins when these eggs deposit on the dog’s coat. These eggs then fall to the ground and infect the environment during the entire development until the adult stage.

Immediately after hatching, the flea looks for a new host and after two to three days on the animal, the female starts laying eggs again, and so the cycle is complete.

Indeed, they are only observed at a massive infestation. If the parasite, at the time of the examination, is not physically present on the animal, it is sometimes possible to find faeces in the form of small black granules in the coat.

It will be extremely important not only to control the fleas on the infected animal, but also the environmental treatment is important to interrupt the life cycle of the flea.
