YAKUZA’S TATOO
FROM MARCH 7th TO JUNE 7th 2024
2023 年春、東京。
They are nicknamed the Gentlemen of Crime! And yet, without faith, the Yakuza have no other law than to execute the dirty work perfectly on order from their boss.
I had been waiting for contact, a sign, a call for months to photograph them. Time was passing... My trip to Japan was coming to an end. And finally, that afternoon, almost unexpectedly, four of them indirectly let me know that they were waiting for me in their favorite tattoo salon in Tokyo.
In movies, their appearances usually send shivers down the spine. But that day, no black suits, mirrored sunglasses, or handguns! At most, they had in common not letting a single millimeter of tattooed skin show. They were covered from the tips of their shoes to the collars of their shirts. Being a Yakuza requires the utmost discretion! And so it was in this salon, a tiny place, with its storefront opaque, turned into a sauna, that they posed one by one - the other three keeping watch outside. Silently, without modesty, with precision, obedience, and pride. Let them be thanked for it!
I titled my first book; Wild Souls. Perhaps the wild beasts and the Yakuza share this term.
