Immersive Programs: Visual Art Immersive Programs are a cornerstone of each girl’s education at Grier. Regardless of the area of focus, students share a sense of commitment, understand the value of their hard work, appreciate the talents of their peers, and stretch themselves to ever higher levels of achievement—all while doing something they love. No previous experience is required to dive in on day one. Whether a student characterizes her skills as “This is my life” or “I’ve always wanted to try that,” she will find just the right launching place for her personal adventure.

Tapping into Every Student’s Creativity Art is not just for self-identified “artists” at Grier. The Visual Art Department teachers (many of whom are practicing artists) recognize the vast creative potential in every student. Regardless of each girl’s level of experience and future goals, Grier teachers know just how to guide the study of both theory and technique that go into making and appreciating art. An intentional blend of practice, observation, and independent discovery make immersion in the visual arts at Grier a vibrant journey of self-expression.

Choose a Concentration or Explore Every Option The Visual Art studios are hubs of creativity every period of every day. Flexible programming allows committed artists to fill their schedule with up to three art classes per semester while continuing to progress in all their other academic disciplines. Emerging artists can dip their toes (or paint brush) into uncharted territory and see where their imagination takes them. Options vary based on interest and may include: • • • • • •

Art for Art’s Sake and Also with a Sense of Purpose The Visual Art Department faculty not only aims to give students the opportunity to create art but also encourages them to apply their craft in support of the whole school community. Costume designers create the wardrobes for the Theatre Department’s productions, and videographers produce a daily newscast. Collaborations of all kinds (posters for events, videos promoting student initiatives, audition recordings and videos for college and/or professional applications...) make art a part of every girl’s experience.

College Prep Students who wish to pursue art at the university level work closely with their college counselors and portfolio teacher to help identify the best schools to meet individual goals and prepare portfolios for critiques and applications.

10–15% of Grier graduates attend the most selective art and design colleges and universities in the country.
