Roman hat „beim Ausgehen“, in der Disco, inzwischen seine Rosi kennengelernt. Sie ist Krankenschwester, Sport ist nicht so wichtig für sie. „Des is mir gånz recht“, meint Roman, „es g’långt, wenn oana immer unterwegs is.“ Ihre Zwillinge Amy und Zoe sind jetzt acht Jahre alt – und sportlich wie der Papa. Zoe läuft gerne und hat sich dem „Lauftreff Breitenbach“ angeschlossen, Amy ist schon recht ehrgeizig mit dem Bike unterwegs. Roman will sie nicht zu sehr pushen. Er hat oft genug erlebt, wie belastend das für die Familie sein kann.

„eldoRADo“ wird geboren

Vor ein paar Jahren bot sich dem Verein die Gelegenheit, gemeinsam mit den Stadtwerken Wörgl eine Radveranstaltung zu organisieren. Daraus entwickelte sich schließlich das „eldoRADo“ Run & Bike Festival, das heuer zum dritten Mal am Angerberg ausgetragen wird – in Kooperation mit dem „Lauftreff Breitenbach“. Eine kleine, feine Sportmesse ergänzt vor Ort die Sportbewerbe. Verschiedenste Aussteller präsentieren ihre neuesten Produkte, man kann Bikes probieren, Laufschuhe testen und alles natürlich auch gleich an Ort und Stelle shoppen. Aus der „Radunion Unterland“ ist inzwischen der Verein „eldoRADo Biketeam“ geworden, der eine Kinder-Eventserie sponsert – und das eigene Rennen in Angerberg veranstaltet. An die 500 Teilnehmer von Jung bis Alt messen sich beim Festival auf den Mountainbike-Strecken, über 100 schnüren die Wander- oder Laufschuhe und erobern den Hausberg, den Nachberg und den Buchacker. Vor vier Jahren hat Roman selbst mit dem Trailrunning begonnen – „a tolle Ergänzung zum Radeln.“

Letztes Jahr lag am Berg noch Schnee, heuer wird sich vor den Trailrunnern wahrscheinlich eine bunt blühende Almwiese ausbreiten. Der Ausblick oben am Weg vom Buchacker über die Grade zum „Höhlenstein“ ist landschaftlich grandios. Während die Füße über Stock und Stein wandern, schweift der Blick im Norden hinaus bis nach Bayern, hinüber zum Wilden Kaiser, hinein zu den Kitzbüheler Alpen mit der sanften, grasbewachsenen Hohen Salve, weiter südlich grüßt das Hochtal der Wildschönau, und bei Fernsicht reicht der Blick bis weit hinauf ins Inntal. Ganz nah am Fuße der Bergkette schimmert der Inn wie ein silbernes Band und formt seine markante Schleife. Wunderbar!

Kids in Action

Die Mountainbiker haben beim Marathon 77 Kilometer Strecke zu bewältigen – die Veranstaltung ist Teil der internationalen Mountainbike Challenge, zu der übrigens auch „KitzAlpBike“ gehört. Die Strecke führt von Angerberg nach Breitenbach und Kundl, über Saulug bis zur Holzalm in Brixlegg, von dort nach Rattenberg und über Umwege zurück zum Ausgangspunkt. Auch diese Strecke punktet durch landschaftliche Reize und Herausforderungen. Ein Höhepunkt des Festivals ist aber unbestritten der Kinderevent am Samstag: Etwa 200 junge, hoch motivierte Bikefreaks aus Bayern und Österreich legen sich bei einem Rundkurs voll ins Zeug und kämpfen um Hundertstelsekunden. Dieses Rennen der „eldoRADo Kidscup“-Serie, gesponsert vom Namensgeber, zählt zu den technisch einfacheren. Hier können alle jungen Radler einfach einmal Rennluft schnuppern und sich wie ein Profi fühlen. Dieses Gefühl kennt Roman, er braucht es nicht mehr. Was für ihn zählt, ist die Freude an der Bewegung in der Natur. Noch immer liebt er es, sich mit dem Mountainbike, dem Rennrad oder beim Trailrunning auszupowern. Hauptsache er kann raus. Wie damals, als er 13 war und mit dem Bike seines Vaters in ein ganz neues Leben radelte. ■

Roman Ellinger, the chairman of "eldoRADo" bike team talks about what originally motivated him to get on his bike and his painful experiences as a trainer.

Angerberg is looking forward to the third edition of "eldoRADo" Bike & Run Festival with mountain Bike marathon, the Kids Cup Race, the trail run and the new Nachberg-March. 39 years young, athletic-sporty, with a boyish charm - is the best way to describe the chairman of "el-doRADo" club. It is hard to believe that Roman Ellinger once got on his bike to lose a few kilos. And that at the age of 13! Because most successful cyclists start young, he describes himself as a "late bloomer." When Roman was still young and attended school in Angerberg and later Wörgl, he often accompanied his father on extensive mountain hikes. After his father became ill and had to give up hiking, his son also stayed at home - and developed a penchant for “bacon”. “80 kilos heavy and only 1.58 tall, now that was something else.” remembers Roman. Sports lessons at school were torture, which proved to be embarrassing for the young lad. So, he got his father's racing bike out of the cellar, heaved himself into the saddle and pedalled off. It was the beginning of summer in 1994. Roman was immediately hooked: “Straight away, I loved the fact that you could get so far - and the speed.” Cycling alone, he rode to Rosenheim and Raubling, in other words, out to the Bavarian foothills and back again. He was on the road, of course, for hours. What on earth did his mother say? “That I should be home before it gets dark,” laughs Roman. The apron strings were a bit longer back then ... In any case, the boy lost 16 kilogrammes by winter - and registered with Kufstein Cycling Club. He was given “a bit of a hard time” by the others to start with,” as he jokingly puts it. But that changed over the years, as the man from Angerberg became increasingly ambitious and successful. Weighing in at 58 kilograms and 1.65 tall, he was now a well-trained lightweight and literally “flew" uphill. Because everything was going so well, he bought himself a mountain bike and entered mountain races in the region. During his second year in the junior category, he was runner-up in the Austrian Cup Series and secured the Junior Mountain Bike State Champion title in Vorarlberg. The overweight thirteen-year-old had turned into a proverbial “racing machine.” In the meantime, Roman completed an apprenticeship and became a tiler - his dream job. “I’m not the sort of person to work in an office, I need to work physically. Tiling is a creative job, there are always new materials to work with. It's super exciting." Roman worked 40 hours a week on construction sites, while spending almost every free minute on his bike - and became Vice State Road Racing Champion in the U23 category.

From active racing to trainer

All of a sudden, he had enough. Biking and tiling are simply too much to try and combine in the long run. After all, he couldn’t just leave everything lying around on a half-finished building site to head off to train. As a result, he decided to take a more relaxed approach to the sport. He continued to race, but without such ambitious goals. Instead, he became a functionary for the cycling club in Ebbs and completed training as a junior coach for children. First there were just two or three kids, then ten, twenty, and suddenly there were forty. He enjoyed training with the young cyclists. “They’re uncomplicated. It’s not the results that matter most, but the fun they have.” Roman dedicated a huge amount of his time to them and toured with his cycling protégés to races all over Austria - all on a voluntary basis of course. And then it all came to an abrupt end. Some parents believed their children needed even more support and one-to-one coaching, as their son or daughter had what it took to become the next world champion. Not easy, with so many children. During a training session, Roman suddenly had enough and threw the towel in.

New attempt

In 2007 he founded his own club together with colleagues, "Radunion Unterland". Children soon joined to train with him again, however, with their ambitious parents in tow. It seemed like history was threatening to repeat itself. So Roman made a clean break and decided to coach purely on a hobby basis, and not for competitive sport. “They soon disappeared in all directions.” Everything went quiet for years and club life was calm and tranquil. In the meantime, Roman met his Rosi during a night out at a disco. She is a nurse and sport is less important for her. “That suits me down to the ground,” says Roman, “it’s enough when one of us is on the road.” Their twins, Amy and Zoe, are now eight years old - and just as sporty as their Papa. Zoe enjoys running and is a member of “Lauftreff Breitenbach” running club, while Amy is already quite an ambitious cyclist. Roman doesn’t want to push them too hard. He has seen at first-hand how stressful this can be for a family.

EldoRADo comes into being

A few years ago, the club had the opportunity to organise a cycling event together with Stadtwerken Wörgl public utility company. This eventually developed into “eldoRADo” Run & Bike Festival, which will be held for the third time this year at Angerberg - in cooperation with “Lauftreff Breitenbach” running club. The sporting competitions are complemented by a small sports fair on site, where various exhibitors present their latest products. Bikes and running shoes can be tested and of course purchased on the spot. "Radunion Unterland" has evolved into the "eldoRADo Biketeam" Association, which sponsors a series of events for children - and organises its own race in Angerberg. Around 500 participants of all ages compete at the festival along the mountain bike routes, while over 100 lace up their hiking or running shoes and conquer the local mountain; Nachberg and the Buchacker. Roman himself started trail running four years ago - "a great complement to cycling.” Last year there was still snow on the mountain. This year, trail runners will

probably be welcomed by alpine meadows in colourful bloom. Views from the top of the trail from Buchacker over the alpine ridge to "Höhlenstein" are simply magnificent. While your feet wander over hill and dale, views extend northwards as far as Bavaria, over to the Wilder Kaiser, into the Kitzbühel Alps with the gentle, grassy Hohe Salve Mountain, further south to the high valley of Wildschönau, and far up into the Inn Valley in the distance. Close to the foot of the mountain range, the River Inn shimmers like a silver ribbon as it snakes along the valley floor. Wonderful!

Kids in Action

Mountain bikers must cover a distance of 77 kilometres during the marathon - the event is part of the international Mountain Bike Challenge which, incidentally, also belongs to the "Kitz Alp Bike." The route leads from Angerberg to Breitenbach and Kundl, via Saulug to the Holzalm in Brixlegg, to Rattenberg and returns via detours to the starting point again. This route also impresses with scenic attractions and challenges. One of the festival's highlights is undoubtedly the children's event on Saturday: around 200 young, highly motivated bike enthusiasts from Bavaria and Austria will testing their mettle on the ciruit and battling it our for hundredths of a second. This race from the “eldoRADo Kids Cup” series, sponsored by its namesake, is one of the technically easier ones. The event gives young cyclists the opportunity to get a taste of racing air and feel like a professional. Roman knows this feeling, but he doesn't need it anymore. What counts for him is the joy of movement in nature. He still loves to work out out on a mountain bike, racing bike or while trail running. The main thing is that he can get out into the great outdoors. Like when he was 13 and cycled with his father's bike into a whole new life. ■

Im beschaulichen Pillerseetal steht es: Das größte, komplett begehbare Gipfelkreuz der Welt. Im Juli 2014 wurde das Jakobskreuz nach nur wenigen Monaten Bauzeit offiziell eröffnet. Schon aus der Ferne ist das Jakobskreuz am Gipfel der Buchensteinwand im Pillerseetal zu sehen. Fast 30 Meter ragt es in die Höhe und soll nicht nur zum Ausflugsort, sondern zum Platz des Friedens werden, an dem man sich zu positiven und aufrichtenden Themen und Veranstaltungen zusammenfindet. Die Philosophie des Kreuzes ruht auf vier Grundpfeilern: Es ist zum einen ein Ausflugsziel mit atemberaubender Aussicht auf die Bergwelt und ein besonderer Ort, um Kraft zu tanken, es dient als Pilgerziel und Ort für religiöse und besinnliche Veranstaltungen, es wird zum „Denkplatz“, wenn hier innovative Seminare, Zukunftsgespräche und Workshops stattfinden und es ist ein einzigartiger Veranstaltungsort, wo Besucher Ausstellungen und Vorträge im und rund um das Kreuz miterleben können. Die Räume können gemietet werden und stehen auch für private Veranstaltungen zur Verfügung. Auch standesamtliche Hochzeiten haben bereits stattgefunden. Im Stiegenhaus und in den diversen Räumlichkeiten finden laufend wechselnde Ausstellungen von heimischen und internationalen Künstlern statt.
