UMVOTI MUNICPALITY ISSUES PRESS STATEMENT

Umvoti municipality has issued the following press statement for information "Umvoti Municipality would like to inform the residents of Umvoti of the courageous apprehension of a certain offender by the Umvoti Municipal Traffic Officers who on 25th June at 07h30 while performing route traffic duties have apprehended an individual who was in possession of a stolen vehicle, driving without a valid driver's license as well as being in possession of a stolen firearm and ammunition The said offender was subsequently arrested and is in custody for various other charges, hats off to Officers K Manqele, Z Chonco and M Mshibe for a job well done. Umvoti Residents can rest assured that our brave and diligent traffic officers are visible and ready to assist Umvoti residents when needed. " "On 30th June around 18:00 the Department of Protection

WATER WASTE FLOWS ON This close up photograph, submitted by a con cerned ratepayer, illustrates once again the ap palling waste of water which leaks out of the SASKO reservoir, based in the grounds of Link seed. This is the third time this year the Grey town Gazette has published a photo and report on this and has to once again report, that the authorities, Umzinyathi District Municipality has taken no action to stop this monumental waste of water. On receipt of this photograph

Services, under the supervision of Mr Ndaba, attended a complaint that one of the Umvoti Municipal staff members, Sindi Ndawonde (night street sweeper) was stabbed whilst doing her night duties at Maitland Street opposite Phuzimpilo tavern near the taxi rank. She was stabbed as she had warned two ladies not to break bottles on the street whilst she was busy trying to clean the street. On arrival of the Protection Services said two ladies fought and stabbed each other. Protection Services together with Field Security assistance managed to rescue our staff member and took the culprits into custody for detention.A case was then opened against them. " "This is not the first incident to occur against our Municipal employees as in December 2013 Ms Mchunu was attacked in Sargeaunt Street ;on 27 June Ms Xulu was involved in an acci-

dent near KFC, and on 28th June Ms Zondi, Ms Dludla and Ms Ndawonde were attacked whereby a guy tried to stabbed them with a bottle near the Taxi rank. We are therefore humbly requesting the community of Umvoti Municipality and the General public not to harm our employees who work at night as major steps will be taken against them, this matter has been sensitized with the SAPS to protect our employees and should any community member of the general public be found to be guilty of the said crime will be charged accordingly." "Further to the above the recently fenced King Edward Park will be ready for use in due course.Said park was fenced to ensure the safety of the hirer as well as the wellbeing of the community. In future the Park can be booked at the Corporate Services Department for a set hire fee. Umvoti Municipality is

striving to ensure that the amenities of the park are in working order which will able the Municipality to provide maximum services to the person wishing to hire the park. King Edward Park is also earmarked for Small Town Rehabilitation Projects in which all facilities will be available to the young and old eg, swimming pool and swings, therefore the Municipality had to fence the park to protection the facility and the equipment which will be erected." "The Theodore Menne Library was also recently fenced off for many years the library has been the object of theft and ill use after hours and over the weekends, the fencing of the library will ensure that theft is at a minimum and the building is not misused. Umvoti Municipality will keep residents updated on the developments of the King Edward Park. " last week the Greytown Gazette forwarded it to the relevant official at Umzinyathi with a request fior a statement no response whatso ever at the time of going to press! In the last report published on 21st May, it was pointed out it was estimated up to 200 000 litres a day was gushing out of this resevoir to water the adjacent streets and verges! This means that since it started about six months ago millions of litres of this precious commodi ty have flushed away into space. Enhlalakahle residents do have supply problems as a result. Ironical isn't it that Umzinyathi could spend such much time and effort on harassing Grey town water customers with out of date claims through threatening phone calls and the ap pointment of debt agencies, but have taken no action on this frightful and oft reported leakage!

DROWNING TRAGEDY COURT CASE Bakkie driver, Phelelani Mchunu accused of murder, appeared in the Greytown Magistrate's Court on Monday but the case was postponed to 5th August as his lawyer was not present. The charges of murder relate to the tragic death of five schoolchildren on May 12th when the vehicle they were travelling in left the road and lunged into a dam on a Rietvlei farm. In his first Court appearance in May, the State originally opposed bail but withdrew its opposition when the grieving parents stated they had no objections to him being granted bail as they were of the opinion the tragedy had been an accident. Furthermore they had agreed that Mchunu drive their children to their Mooi River schools. The tragedy occurred when early on the Monday morning Mchunu allegedly lost control of the bakkie which overturned and plunged into a sludge dam. Five of the 29 children on the back of the bakkie, died and the others were injured.

Nelson Mandela Day FOR anyone who has not decided what they will do for 67 minutes on Nelson Mandela Day, this is a reminder to plan your activities for Friday, 17 July. Every year on the great man's birthday, 18 July, South Africans are asked to con-

tribute 67 minutes of community service to honour Madiba's legacy of 67 years of public service. This day is internationally recognized. For instance, United Nations personnel throughout the world commemorate it by handing out school supplies, feeding the elderly, helping out orphanages, cleaning up parks etc. Please notify the Greytown Gazette, for publication in the issue of 16 July, what your 67 minutes commitment is.

Greytown Country Club Midlands Hoopoe this year is due on the 12th, 13th and 14th September. It is a 3 day golf tournament featuring all golf courses affiliated to the Midlands Golf Association. Not all could participate this year but the following are on the agenda: The first 2 days (Friday and Saturday) are at: Greytown CC, Mooi River CC, Boschoek GC, Sakabula GC and Richmond CC. (other MGA clubs are Noodsberg, Estcourt and Gowrie). The final day is at Howick GC. The Friday and Saturday are ‘Better Ball’ (ie the teams are split) and the final is an ‘Alliance’. All scores are added to determine

the winners. We had 4 Hoopoe tournaments from 2004 – 07 and we want to resurrect it – it was very popular. We will promote it throughout KZN and even further. We are expecting teams from PE and Pongola already! We want the Hoopoe to become as well known as the “Jock of the Bushveld” in Nelspruit and we will hope to start attracting golfers potentially in their 100’s!! At R400 a head it is said to be for ‘nothing’!! Sponsorship is going to be our next challenge! We need nice prizes, and hopefully ‘sponsored’ accommodation for visitors during the tournament. Prizes that promote the Amble are highly valued. Pairs of prizes will be suitable for the first four days and 4 items more suitable for the final day (this is not binding though). We will be preparing a sponsorship form to explain the options and how banners, notices, pamphlets etc can be used. We want to involve all tourism organizations in the area.I am sure all prizes will promote the ‘hospitality’ of the KZN Midlands in general. Any potential sponsor can contact me directly via clivebrom@telkomsa.net or on 082 417 6886 or 0333305718. “The Mirror image of Elvis” is coming to the Country Club on Sunday 3 August. Tickets are R100 to enjoy the show with music of the king at his best in the 70’s. Show will start at 3pm.Exclusively to Club members and their invited guests. Tickets are available at the Club or contact Elmarie on 0334172441. Peter March lost out on the money on Friday as he was not present at the time. The next attendance draw will be on Friday (11 July) with R1900 up for grabs. Be here at 6:30 – 7pm and you could be the lucky winner. Mascor monthly mug is playing on 12 July with the entry fee only R50, including halftime. T-off will start from 10:30. Please enter The “Sunday 9@9” entry fee is R40 to play 9 holes. Richard Chiazzari is sponsoring a chicken that will be up for the winning on Sunday mornings. Prevent veld fires during winter LAND users and farmers are advised to exercise extreme caution to prevent veld fires during winter states the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in a recent press statement. Wildfires are a regular occurrence in South Africa. Every year during the fire season, the news contains stories of wildfires sweeping through the country. Veld fires bring much devastation to communities in terms of loss of livelihood, livestock, infrastructure and human lives. Everyone must be wise when dealing with open fires and when operating machinery. The dryness of the vegetation, coupled with the effect of winds, creates perfect conditions for runaway veld fires. During winter, veld fires are a serious threat to the agricultural sector, therefore farmers are urged to take note of risk-reduction measures by ensuring that fire equipment is, at all times, easily accessible and in good condition. South Africa has large grasslands, savannah and forests and is particularly fire prone since all the elements and sources for fire ignition and spread of veld fires are there.

The National Veld and Forest Fire Act, 1998 (Act No.101 of 1998) provides a statutory obligation on all landowners to develop firebreaks and places an onus on landowners to be prepared and equipped to fight a fire and to take all reasonable steps to stop the spread of fire. Chapter 2 of the Act regulates the establishment, registration, duties and functioning of fire protection associations (FPA's). These associations must deal with all aspects of veld fires, such as the prevention and firefighting, where farmers can play an active role in managing and planning of fire management as a collective, with co-ownership of the risk management process. It has been noted that since the promulgation of the Act, a concerted effort has been made by private landowners to comply with the Act. However, all farmers are encouraged, especially in areas where veld fires are almost a yearly occurrence, to participate fully in the FPA's, and it would enable all to mitigate the general risk of fire spread. For further information, please contact UFP Fire Protection officer Charles Haden at 076 154 1090.

Greytown weather update JUNE certainly was an almost dry month, with just 6.6mm recorded by the Pannar research department. This is not the lowest in the 40 year mean - a mere 2.5 mm was recorded in 2008/9. In town, Grant Gifford recorded a few drops more - 7mm. On the temperature front, there were quite a few frosty mornings - the coldest minus 3.8 recorded on 13 June. Maximum temperature during the day was way back on 1 June at 29.5. Average minimum temperature for the month was 3.15 and maximum 21.61 which is not bad for winter.

Doctors call list GREYTOWN doctors have set up a call register to ensure that if anyone needs after hours assistance, and their own doctor is not available, they can contact the doctors on call. The 911 Ops Centre and Arcadia will have a list which is also printed in the Greytown Gazette each month.

Wartburg Kirchdorf school news

IT was a happy celebration of father’s day at Wartburg Kirchdorf Primary school for dad’s to spend some quality time with their children. First a target throwing activity as an ice-breaker, together with popcorn, which proved to be a lot of fun. This was followed by a presentation of extra special songs for the dads, as well as wors rolls, hot chocolate and finally, roasted marshmallows over the fire. There was a great atmosphere and good to see the dad’s relaxing and having fun with their children.

St Cathryn's News The Farmer's Agri-Care Monthly Mug was played on Saturday 5 July and as can be seen from the results, it was a one horse race. Paul Els was on form, from the first tee box to the 18th green, in the absence of Merwin Rabe and Barry Oehme, he was the favourite and led from start to finish. The extreme wind ( at times code red ) thinned the field and made playing conditions difficult. GREYTOWN RACING P[IGEON CLUB NEWS On Saturday 7th our race point was from Middelburg, a distance of 380 kms. A beautiful day except, for once again , winds which blew the birds past us and then having to fly back home, resulting in velocities that would have been even faster had the birds been able to home directly. After a 7.15 a.m. liberation for the yearlings, the winning bird recorded a velocity of 1600 metres per minute, covering the distance in 4 hours to his home with the Naicker Bros, closely followed by Attie Joubert's two birds, ten minutes later the next yearling landed at Old Grizzle's loft at 16.30. Don't ever say that miracles never happen because the Old Grizzle actually clocked a winner. Liberated at 8 a.m. the winner was clocked at 12 noon to record a velocity of 1588 metres per minute to be

followed by Attie Jourbert's bird at 12.14 p.m. and the Naickers at 12.19.What a season they are having! If only the wind would let up. If this keeps up we will have to start racing fantails.
