UMVOTI HAS NEW MAYOR! THERE were loud shouts of joy as Councillor Thami Clive Ngubane was unanimously elected as Umvoti Mayor at the special statutory Council meeting held last Friday. The Mayor was appointed as a PR Councillor by the ANC last year and is obviously a popular choice with the community. Councillor E.S. Shange, who is an NFP PR Councillor was also unanimously elected deputy Mayor. Both the Mayor and deputy Mayor will be full time with offices at the Municipality which will enable them to be available for consultations with all members of the Umvoti community. Prior to the election the Administrator announced that the settlement agreement had been signed by the four parties,

ANC, IFP, NFP and DA as a result of which the outstanding court cases would no longer take place. This also resulted in Umvoti’s first Mayor since 2012 being elected – positive move for the future growth and development of Umvoti. In November last year, IFP Councillor M.S.Yengwa was appointed Speaker but as a result of an ANC walk out no further elections, including that of the Executive Committee could take place. At Friday’s meeting the four member Executive Committee was elected prior to the Mayoral election – members are the Mayor and deputy Mayor and past Mayor Petros Ngubane of the IFP and Councillor R.Maharaj of the IFP. Mayor Ngubane congratulates deputy Mayor Shange

He tried to halt the vehicle using the railings but was unable to control the vehicle which fell about 25metres into a gorge. Colonel Minnaar said that the passengers were scattered around on the ground. She said the response from the community had been im-

UMVOTI Municipality has been ordered to pay the costs by Judge Whitcher in his judgement in the Labour Court Durban on 19th February. The costs relate to the case brought by Umvoti Municipality, S.A Mdledle and third respondent Bongani Xulu against applicants Sakkie Archer and Martin Swanlow of Umvoti Municipality. The judgement ordered that the disciplinary proceedings against the applicants be interdicted until such time as the Municipality passed a resolution complying with the various regulations of the Local Government Systems Act 32 of 2000 which relates to the disciplinary processes to be followed when senior Managers are charged. Any allegations of misconduct against any senior manager has to be brought to the attention of Council not later than 7 days after the allegation has been made. Within a time period of 30 days a report has to be submitted by the investigator. A labour Court spokesman said that the allegations had been made last August so that the time constraints had not been adhered to. - Media24

UMVOTI MUNICIPALITY ADVERT FOR WARD COMMITTEES

Notice is hereby given in terms of section 73 of the Municipal Structures Act No. 117 of 1998 that vacancies for Ward Committee members exist in Ward 10 and the election date is as follows:

THIS was the scene in Durban Street on Sunday morning – the road blocked and not a warning sign in sight. The motorist who took this photograph said that two pantechnicons (with no lead vehicles) came from the

Muden approach into Durban Street – the motorist flashed lights non-stop and the first vehicle managed to slam on the brakes with much swaying. On checking no warning signs were found above, on the Muden approach or

below the digging! The bakkie seen in the picture has an NKR registration but no identification. The personnel standing alongside made no attempt to warn oncoming vehicles. Maybe because it was a Sunday miraculously no-one

Date: 26th February 2015 Venue: Enhlalakahle New Hall Time: 15h00

was injured and no vehicle was damaged and the photographer told the Greytown Gazette that he is still trying to work out how the pantechnicons managed to brake in time and get past safely as maneuvering pace was minimal!

Please be informed that election of ward committees will take place in the wards as per the under-mentioned schedule:Members of the Community are invited to attend the meetings as per their wards. Main Requirements for the Election of a Ward Committee Member is as follows:1. A person must be a registered voter in the ward. 2. Be in possession of a Green Bar Coded Identity Document (please bring along the ID Document on the election day) All related enquiries may be directed to the Manager Committee Administration, Ms P.L.C. Robson on 033 413 9109 during office hours.

Protesters close Muden Road ONCE again road users have been put at risk as since last week protesters have closed the Muden,Weenen and Escourt roads. At the core of the protests is the lack of delivery of electricity and water and the purchase of the Hillerman farm by Government which has been ongoing for the past years. Consequently, according to a spokesman for the protesters, the community has demonstrated and submitted memorandums of grievances, barricaded the road between Muden and Greytown many times demanding to the Government to utilise the Expropriation Act as a matter of urgency. Two leaders of the community appeared in Greytown Magistrate’s Court on 17th February relating to charges of threatening the farm manager of

Hillerman farm -the case was remanded to Friday 6th March. In January last year a High Court interdict was granted to restrain Muden community members from actions and movement on Lot 194 and surrounds –the respondents were Jeffrey Ngobese, Lungisana Ndlovu, Hillerman and Zimbambeleni community member. The applicants being Lot 194 Marina Beach and farm manager, Martin Platt. Community members state that the situation has been compounded as community ward meetings which in terms of Operation Sukama Sakhe are supposed to be held four times a month have not been with only one meeting having taken place. Department and municipality representatives make excuses not to attend. The next meeting is due to be held on Thursday 5th

March at Mount Ernestina at 10 a.m. and in view of the situation in the area it is hoped that all involved will attend. In the meantime as the Muden road, Weenen road and Estcourt roads are blockaded and damaged, tensions remain high as schoolchildren and educators struggle to get to respective their schools; employees take whatever route they can to get to their places of work often taking several hours to get from Muden to Greytown. Taxi owners are losing fares and in general the economy of the area is suffering. This situation has been ongoing for the past twenty years – considerable damage occurs, there is the loss of income and the downturn of the economy and the negative impact on all the residents. Is it not way over time

The purpose of formation of these committees is to strengthen community participation and directly give residents a platform to express their views in respect to ward developmental issues and to address citizens’ concerns.

that positive action is taken by Government to lawfully resolve this issue once and for all.

Community members are invited to attend election meetings in their respective wards. MR B.A. XULU PO Box 71 Notice No. 2045 MUNICIPAL MANAGER

What a dump! WHAT A DUMP! The Municipality's waste dump has never been one of the healthiest areas in the town. The recent rain created a stagnant pool of water surrounded by moist rotting plastic bags of rubbish generating an all pervading smell! When this photograph was taken by the Greytown Gazette not one of the workers at the dump had any sort of protective clothing - uniforms, gloves or masks! This dump has never been on of the heathiest areas in Greytowan. PHOTO: GREYTOWN GAZETTE

Shadow Column THE Greytown Gazette publishes a monthly Shadow Column at the end of each month to list events to come throughout the year. The main objective is to notify the public of what events are scheduled to take place, or about to, to avoid as far as possible, ‘double dating’ - that is two events on the same day which could create problems not only for the organisers, but also for the public. An appeal therefore goes out to all Churches, NGOs, sports bodies, clubs etc. to submit dates and event details to the Greytown Gazette for publication as soon as possible. From now until the end of the year there are so many events social, sporting, prizegivings etc, so please notify either verbally or electronically in time for the next Shadow column. February birth flower FEBRUARY Birth Flower is the Violet. tradition. It is believed that birthday celebrations originated in the Roman Empire and the origins of birth month flowers, such as the Violet, could be said to date back to these times. During Roman birthday celebrations family and friends offered congratulations and brought gifts. The gifts included the birth stone such as the Amethyst, and also flowers - the first traditions and origins of the February Birth Flower. The language of flowers developed during the highly conservative period of the Victorian era. The Victorians were strongly restricted by rules of etiquette when it was considered totally inappropriate to express feelings of love or affection. The “Language of Flowers” therefore evolved when a message was assigned to specific flower such as the Violet. A lover could then send flowers which conveyed a hidden romantic meaning… the Violet symbolizes faithfulness, humility, and chastity But there also was hidden message depending on the color: Color Violet - I’ll always be true Color White / Cream - let’s take a chance

KZN municipalities...back to basics KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, with MEC for Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube, last week launched a wide-ranging Back to Basics programme, aimed at rekindling the spirit of effective service delivery, efficient administration and clean governance in KZN’s 61 municipalities. Premier Mchunu called on councillors to focus on improving the lives of the people. “People are looking to us to make their lives better than when they were before each of us was elected into office. They are no longer looking for general statements around delivery of services, but for specifics, which are well articulated with clear timelines and expected level of quality,” said Premier Mchunu.

That is what back to basics mean. MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube, articulated the responsibility of local government in improving the lives of the people. “Too much has gone wrong with our municipalities: service delivery protests, interruptions in the delivery of water and electricity, political infighting, a sense of indifference and neglect,” said Dube-Ncube.

“It is clear that somewhere along the way, we have lost the drive to do things as we should.” The five pillars of the Back to Basics programme are: * Put the people and their con-

through effective public participation platforms. * Create conditions for decent living by consistently delivering municipal services to the right quality and standards. * Be well governed and demonstrate good governance and administration by cutting wastage, spending public monies prudently, hiring competent staff, ensuring transparency and accountability.

* Ensure sound financial management and accounting and prudently manage resources so as to sustainably deliver services and bring development to communities. * Build and maintain sound institutional and administrative capabilities, administered and managed by dedicated and skilled personnel at all levels. The mayors of KZN municipalities have pledged to support the programme by acknowledging that the province’s local government must enable better access to quality services, overcoming the legacy of apartheid, strengthening community participation, and building effective, accountable and clean local government. - issued by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government.

Strawberry Quick meth does exist. MORE cases of a drug thought not to exist are being uncovered.as was recently revealed by Quintin van Kerken from Anti Drug Alliance SA. Strawberry Quick, a combination of sugar, food colouring, flavourants and crystal meth, was thought to be a hoax a few years ago. An investigative journalism programme recently revealed

however it does in fact exist. And is on the market. ER24 urges parents to be aware that this drug is said to be very accessible to children. Parents should seek help for children immediately should it be found they have ingested the drug. Investigations so far have revealed that there are four flavours, namely strawberry, creme soda, bubble-

gum, and caramel. Van Kerken said the flavours have varying amounts of crystal meth. Symptoms include chattiness, nervousness, dry mouth, dilated pupils, extreme energy followed by chronic fatigue, paranoia, jaw clenching, increased heart rate, excessive sweating, increased libido, and in severe cases may include hallucinations.

Van Kerken urged parents not to allow their children to buy items from street vendors -. drug use and abuse among school children is increasing at alarming rates. Dr Wessels said children should take note that their organs are not yet mature and the use of drugs could be detrimental on their development. For further information on Anti

Drug Alliance SA and its service call 072 400 8239 (Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Alternatively visit www.antidrugalliance.com. ER24's Emergency Contact Centre can be reached 24 hours a day on 084 124 for any medical emergency. Chitra Bodasing ER24 spokesperson

Municipality not a recrutiment agent! SIR, At a Council meeting on 19 February 2015 a document, "MAVUNDLA SQUARE RECRUITMENT PLAN" was handed out to Councillors. I was astounded to read the recommendations which were decided on at a meeting between the developer, (Mr. Mavundla) the Municipality and Municipal structures. These being; 1) That a committee consisting of Municipal officials and structures will be responsible for the whole recruitment process. 2) The Municipality will do awareness loud hailing throughout Umvoti. 3) The Municipality will collect C.V's throughout Umvoti.

The recruitment of staff, for a private concern, IS NOT a function of Umvoti Municipality and the entire process is a BLATANT case of irregular expenditure. We do not pay rates and various other service charges/fees to recruit staff for private individuals. This is an attempt to canvas for the upcoming elections at the expense of Umvoti residents and proves, yet again, that the ANC cannot differentiate between party politics and service delivery. This matter will be closely monitored and the required action taken if needed. Cllr. P. Buss

Our Kammaland theme is “People who help us”. The Umvoti Fire and Rescue Department gave a very informative talk and demonstration. Children were allowed to hold the fire hoses and inspect the rescue equipment. The siren added an additional thrill and the Kammaland children will not easily forget this visit. Christine Binneman and Amahle Bhengu handed over a special poster with fire trucks to thank the Fire Department.

Beware fake credit providers BE wary of fake credit providers offering personal loans at lower than the average interest rates. These fake credit providers contact consumers through e-mail or sms. Once the offer is accepted the fake credit providers demand payment of advance fees. The general mode of operation of the fake credit providers is: Posing as legitimate credit providers and sending consumers soliciting emails or smses, offering cheap loans, consumers are furnished with loan application forms to complete. These application forms appear to be legitimate as they have NCR registration numbers. Shortly after the application, consumers receive loan approval letters via email and are requested to pay advance fees. These fees are generally defined as clearance or administration fees. Some consumers unfortunately fall into this trap and pay the fees for the release of the loan amounts applied for: · Once consumers pay the advance fees requested, the fake credit providers ask for payment of further/additional fees; · In the end consumers do not receive the loan amounts applied for and the fake credit provider disappears without a trace. “It has come to the attention of the NCR that most of these fake credit providers are based in Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Durban and East London and their email ad-

dresses contain domains such as yahoo.com; webmail.co.za; .co.uk; @admin.in.th; @manager.in.th. They always promise charging an interest rate of not more than 5% per annum, in addition to the fake credit providers soliciting loan applications from consumers, the NCR has discovered that consumers surf the internet to identify credit providers who offer credit to ‘blacklisted’ persons and who use words such as ‘no credit checks required’, ‘free credit’, ‘cheap credit’ and others. Consumers who are victims of schemes of this nature are urged to report them to their local South African Police Service (SAPS). Helpful tips for consumers: Be wary of the internet domains such as yahoo.com; webmail.co.za; .co.uk; @admin.in.th; @manager.in.th; The National Credit Act does not allow credit providers to request upfront payment for the release of personal loans; Credit providers are required to conduct affordability assessments and credit checks before granting loans. If unsure or in doubt about the legitimacy of a credit provider consumers are urged to contact the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627 or www.ncr.org.za Source: Didi Sebothoma>National Credit Regulator

Hermannsburg Happenings OUR Eco-school is five years old! WESSA inspector, Siyanda Sokhela, presented the school with a new eco-flag and certificate, following her recent inspection of the school and its eco-initiatives. Well done to all our teachers and scholars, from Kindergarten to high school, for their continued efforts to learn and implement more eco-friendly ways to interact with the precious environment in which we live; efforts recently recognised by the Mtunzini Conservancy, whose chairperson, Barbara Chedzey, who recently wrote to thank Hermannsburg for “supporting the Mtunzini Conservancy in our bid to preserve biodiversity and amenity around Mtunzini from the ravages of mineral sand mining”. Hermannsburg hosted the Quadrangular Gala last week Tuesday, welcoming the teams from Wartburg Kirchdorf High School, Greytown High School and Wembley College. Hermannsburg and Wembley teams vied for the lead right up to the last few events, when Wembley (WC) edged ahead to emerge

the winning school on the day, followed by Hermannsburg (DSH), Wartburg (WKS) and Greytown (GHS). Hermannsburg fielded the strongest boys’ team on the day, while Wembley had the strongest girls’ team, with Tayla Porée (WC) breaking two records (U15 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle). Champions were: U19 - Hope Porée (WC) and Stuart Tarr (WKS), U16 - Hannah Tedder (WC) and, in a tie, Hugh Bouwer (DSH) & Reagan Lotter (WKS), U15 - Tayla Porée (WC) and Kyle Thompson (GHS), U14 - Lydia Köhne (DSH) in a tie with Milla Herbst (WC) and Michael Chiazzari (WC). Thank you to all the swimmers, officials and supporters for their participation and for the spirit of good sportsmanship. The Primary Schools’ Hermannsburg aQuellé Sports Day saw all the scholars wearing aQuellé Hermannsburg Mudman T-shirts to school last Wednesday. The Grade 1 to 7 scholars were divided into six groups, with the Grade 7s as team leaders. Each group had to create a

PUPPETS can stimulate children’s imaginations, and encourage creative play and discovery of the world around them. Any puppet usually encourages even the quietest of children to start talking - puppets can break down barriers and provide an effective means to initiate communication. Which is why two of our teachers attended a puppet workshop at the Wartburg Kirchdorf School, organised by the Goethe Institut in South Africa. The aim of the workshop was to introduce puppetry as an aid to education, and covered the manipulation of a range of different kinds of puppets. For example: hand-puppets with

functioning mouths are an excellent motivational resource to inspire the teaching of phonics within literacy - scholars can build up their comprehension and vocabulary skills by introducing new words, their meanings and other information. There were also special sessions on movement and mime, creative speech, dialogue delivery and voice modulation. We can’t wait to put our new skills into practice in the Kindergarten! A big thank you goes to the Goethe Institute, and especially to Susi Claus, for the wonderful workshop, and also to the team of the Warburg Kirchdorf School, for hosting the event. Shavathon Saturday

IT was World Cancer Day on 4th February and this Saturday, 28th February is Shavathon when throughout the country, heads will be shaved, or sprayed or stencilled to show support for cancer survivors. And to bring home the fact that early diagnosis is the route to survival. Why this extensive media coverage on the disease? It is estimated that one in eight South Africans are affected by cancer but the fight against it has been overshadowed by HIV/AIDS which has infected and affected hundreds of thousands in this country alone. This week it was announced that the Medical Research Council has committed R37 million for university research units to look into specific types of cancer. According to the Cancer Association of S.A. (CANSA) the motrtality rate for ovarian cancer is 70% - of the 6 000 women diagnosed every year with cervical cancer more than half die due to late diagnosis. In 2014 the Department of Health launched a campaign to vaccinate Grade 4 girls in Government schools, against the human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical cancer. On the awareness front, apart from the Shavathon there is the CANSA Relay For Life which is part of an international movement that unites

cancer survivors and the communities that care about them. It offers everyone in a community, both young and old, the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer and to honour those who have been touched by cancer. The relay is run over 18 24 hours so that some team member is on the track at all times because cancer neither slumbers or sleeps. A Shavathon takes place this Saturday in Greytown at Mascor (the Greytown Gazette has assisted in the advertising). Members of the public are asked to pop in at the Mascor outlet on the Pietermaritzburg road from 8.30 a.m. The choice - is shaved (actually a number 1 cut); different colours of spray -not permanent; or a donation. To take part a R50 donation and for children under 12 R25. MASCOR has undertaken to donate an additional R10 to CANSA for every head shaved or sprayed!

Amethyst…February birthstone FEBRUARY’S birthstone is the amethyst the color of which can range from a faint mauve to a rich purple.. Some scientists believe the purple colour arises from the amethysts’ iron oxide content, while others attribute the colour to manganese or hydrocarbons. There is a rich history of lore and legend attached to the stone which can be traced back as far as 25,000 years ago in France, where it was used as a decorative stone.. It has also been found among the remains of Neolithic man. Legend has it that the signet ring worn by Cleopatra was an amethyst, engraved with the figure of Mithras, a Persian deity symbolizing the divine idea, source of light and life. It is also said to be the stone of Saint Valentine, who wore an amethyst engraved with the figure of his assistant, Cupid. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos” meaning ‘sober. Bacchus, the god of wine in classical mythology, was offended by Diana the huntress. Determined on revenge, he declared that the first person he met as he went through the forest would be eat-

en by his tigers. As it happened, the first person to cross his path was the beautiful maiden Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. In terror, she called upon the goddess to save her, and before his eyes, Bacchus observed the maiden changed to a pure white, sparkling image of stone. Realizing his guilt and repenting his cruelty, Bacchus poured grape wine over her, thus giving the stone the exquisite violet hue of the amethyst. The carryover to non-intoxication was quite logical, and in ancient Rome, amethyst cups were used for wine, so drinkers would have no fear of overindulgence. The early Egyptians believed that the amethyst possessed good powers, and placed the stones in the tombs of pharaohs. During the Middle Ages, it was used as medication, believed to dispel sleep, sharpen intellect, and protect the wearer from sorcery. It was also believed to bring victory in battle. In Arabian mythology, the amethyst was supposed to protect the wearer from bad dreams and gout. It is said to give the wearer peace and tranquility, strengthen resolution and give courage..

St Cathryn’s News IT must have been a first for Golf in the municipal area of Umvoti, when a golf tournament was held over two courses in the area. Visitors from other parts of KwaZulu-Natal and even golfers from the Gauteng province played at St Cathryn’s and Greytown golf courses. A very full field of 52 players played in the inaugural event to raise funds for Arcadia old Age home. When playing at two courses, planning needs to be made to a fine “tee,” because the organisers need to find a date that suits both courses. Then the maximum field size needs to be determined and then course set up, and to satisfy the demand for visitors from further afield accommodation must be available. Playing on two different types of courses also makes golfers think a little more and teams need to format their game in such a way that they work as a unit. This weekend’s format was Medal Stableford. St Cathryn’s has many more hazards, water, trees and tighter fairways with a tougher rough. A golfer would only use a driver

Doctors call list Greytown doctors have set up a call register to ensure that if anyone needs after hours assistance, and their own doctor is not available, they can contact the doctors on call. 911 Ops Centre and Arcadia will have list which is also printed in the Greytown Gazette each month. on a few selected holes on St Cathryn’s whereas in Greytown, the fairways are wider and longer. A Sand Wedge is not a club used often at St Cathryn’s as they have no bunkers, whereas at Greytown golf club there are five bunkers to contend with. The weather over the weekend made for interesting play as well. St Cathryn’s started off with serious berg wind conditions at the 10h30 start and a 29 degree temp, then a southerly wind ripped through the field and a few rumblings of thunder in the distance, only a light shower fell towards the end. The Greytown weather on the other hand on Sunday morning was overcast, cooler and a slight drizzle which abated later. The halfway leaders in the clubhouse at the end of day one were Merwin Rabe and Deon van Dyk, who ended in second position overall. St Cathryn’s members Brent Barkhuizen and Zane Padoa were lying in 7 position on day one, ended up in third position overall Winners were C Cole and J.Cole.

IT was gold for Frankie du Toit, the talented Grade 12 cyclist who is deputy headgirl at Wartburg Kirchdorf School. She was awarded two golds at the SA National road championships in Nelspruit earlier this month - for the junior ladies individual time trial and road race. On the strength of these wins,

Frankie was selected as a member of Team SA at the African Continental Champ which were held in Wartburg from 9 to 14 February. Frankie was part of the junior ladies time trial team which took the gold on and also won gold in the individual time trial. Her last event in the competition

was the junior ladies road race where the race came down to a bunch sprint and Frankie ended up with the bronze medal for South Africa, with Zimbabwe taking gold and silver. It was a tough two weeks of racing, but Frankie is very happy with the results as her main focus is mountain biking.

From the ditch WHO is competitive? There is no difference between competiveness, survival instinct, positivity, ambition or simply the will to please. They are all the same - some emotions are not as disciplined as others and therein lies the difference! Some people are happy to share their satisfaction of achievement, while some choose to keep all their enjoyment to themselves - those who shine and smile and display

pleasure are considered to have sportsmanship and it reflects through all spheres of life! And so it is in bowls and the SpecSavers PRO 10 was full of people having fun and playing very competitive bowls, where consistent accuracy and weight control brought its just rewards. The tournament will conclude next week as each team plays a total of nine matches, then the winners of each section play off for overall winners.
