design by nayeli jimenez Greystone Books is committed to reducing the consumption of old-growth forests in the books it publishes. This catalogue is one step toward that goal. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Canada Council of the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Province of British Columbia through the Book Publishing Tax Credit and the Government of Canada through the Canada Books Fund for our publishing activities.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE As Greystone enters its fifth year as an independent company, our group is growing and the books keep coming. These are books all of us have put our hearts into, by authors who mean a great deal to us, and on subjects we believe readers will want to engage with. This year we have cemented a relationship with three good people who are part of our publishing team. Fiona Brownlee in the UK, Susanne Rolf in Germany and Jane Billinghurst in the United States will help us expand our exports and bring good international titles to English readers. The list for summer/fall 2017 is a case in point: books from new Canadian writers such as Britt Wray, Chris Urquhart, and Kevin Vallely sit comfortably alongside those by writers from Sweden, Germany, and France on topics that range from the emotional life of animals to adventure and climate change in Canada’s Northwest Passage. The books that fill these pages include subjects and ideas that reveal how humans and other parts of the natural world intersect and relate in ways we have not completely understood until now—obsession with birds, de-extinction and the hard questions that surround this emerging science, the sensitivity and tenacity of dogs in their relationships with people whether they are looking for a home or providing comfort for a sick child, and the resilience of people in the face of all the wild weather nature can throw at them. Books that explore serious issues in our world today are also a major component of the list this fall: the story of a city where protest and standing up for ideals became a defining feature, a voice revealing an alternative lifestyle across a continent, the honesty of a man coming out from under the deathly weight of sexual abuse, a challenge to the taboo subject of sex for seniors, and the painful truth about the women and children who have tried, and are still trying, to escape the horror of a war in the Middle East. This is Greystone at four going on five. There will be more. But in one very major way there will be a little less. Our Associate Publisher, Nancy Flight, has decided it is time to step back from the day-to-day insanity of publishing so that she can relax and enjoy the life of a retired woman. Nancy and I have walked the entire Greystone journey together, and her editorial eye and grace pervades all that we have done. I will miss her daily contribution to life in the office. But I’m happy to say that Nancy has accepted the new title of Editor Emeritus, effective in October, and that she will continue to work on a few projects each year. All of us are grateful for that. So we move forward.

Through vivid stories of devoted pigs, two-timing magpies, and scheming roosters, The Inner Life of Animals weaves the latest scientific research into how animals interact with the world alongside Peter Wohlleben’s personal experiences in forests and fields. Horses feel shame, deer grieve, and goats discipline their kids. Ravens call their friends by name, rats regret bad choices, and butterflies choose the very best places for their children to grow up. In this, his latest book, Peter Wohlleben follows the hugely successful The Hidden Life of Trees with insightful stories into the emotions, feelings, and intelligence of animals around us. Animals are different from us in ways that amaze—and they are also much closer to us than we ever would have thought.

Peter Wohlleben is the author of the New York Times bestselling book The Hidden Life of Trees. He is a natural storyteller who writes on ecological themes. He manages a municipally owned, environmentally friendly woodland in Germany. When he is not writing books or caring for his trees, he looks after the family dog and his small collection of farm animals.

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson is the author of numerous books, including the New York Times bestsellers When Elephants Weep and Dogs Never Lie About Love. He is fascinated by the richness of the emotional world of animals and by what animals can teach us about ourselves.

emerging movement of de-extinction, in which creatures like the woolly mammoth, passenger pigeon, aurochs, and gastric frog are being remade with the hope of returning them to the wild one day. But the possible unintended consequences are legion, and opinions about whether and how humans should decide what species should be resurrected are diverse. By talking to scientists at the forefront of the movement and visiting the labs, museums, and conservancies where their work is taking place, Wray poses such questions as: • If we have caused the extinction of a species, do we have a moral duty to re-create it? • Does de-extinction undermine our moral and imaginative capacity to engage with the current extinction crisis? • What are the risks to living species used as gestational surrogates for an extinct species or forced to share a habitat with them? • Can we pull off de-extinction without causing other problems?

Brit t wr ay is a writer and radio broadcaster and has worked as a host and producer on programs for CBC Radio. She holds a BSc in Biology and is a PhD candidate in Science Communication with a focus on synthetic biology at the University of Copenhagen. Born in Toronto, Wray currently lives in Copenhagen.

George Church is the Robert Winthrop Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, where his lab is trying to recreate the woolly mammoth using gene-editing techniques. When you’re r acing 435 miles through the jungles and mountains of South America, the last thing you need is a stray dog tagging along. But that’s exactly what happened to Mikael Lindnord, captain of a Swedish adventure racing team, when he threw a scruffy but dignified mongrel a meatball one afternoon. When the team left the next day, the dog followed. Try as they might, they couldn’t lose him—and soon Mikael realized that he didn’t want to. Crossing rivers, battling illness and injury, and struggling through some of the toughest terrain on the planet, the team and the dog trekked together toward the finish line, where Mikael decided he would save the dog, now named Arthur, and bring him back to his family in Sweden, whatever it took. In compelling prose, illustrated with candid photographs, Arthur provides a testament to the amazing bond between dogs and people. Mik ael Lindnord is a former aspiring professional hockey player, who today travels the world as an adventure racer and motivational speaker. When not racing, he lives with his wife, children, and, of course, his dog, Arthur.

Arthur is a mongrel from somewhere in Ecuador. He likes meatballs, long runs with Mikael, and relaxing with his family in Sweden.

ing facts and exquisite and rare artwork, Birdmania showcases an eclectic and fascinating selection of bird devotees who would do anything for their feathered friends. In addition to well-known enthusiasts such as Aristotle, Charles Darwin, and Helen Macdonald, Brunner introduces readers to Karl Russ, the pioneer of “bird rooms,” who had difficulty renting lodgings when landlords realized who he was; George Lupton, a wealthy Yorkshire lawyer, who commissioned the theft of uniquely patterned eggs every year for twenty years from the same unfortunate female guillemot who never had a chance to raise a chick; George Archibald, who performed mating dances for an endangered whooping crane called Tex to encourage her to lay; and Mervyn Shorthouse, who posed as a wheelchair-bound invalid to steal an estimated ten thousand eggs from the Natural History Museum at Tring. As this book illustrates, people who love birds, whether they are amateurs or professionals, are as captivating and varied as the birds that give flight to their dreams.

Bernd Brunner is an award-winning writer. His work has been published in Lapham’s Quarterly, the Paris Review, the Wall Street Journal Speakeasy, and the Huffington Post. He has lectured at New York’s Bard Graduate Center and the Goethe Institute in San Francisco. Pete Dunne is a prolific author and an avid promoter of birding whose articles have appeared in national media and major American birding publications. Dunne’s books include Hawks in Flight and Birds of Prey.

Dirt y, dreadlocked, and digging in dumpsters, homeless teen travelers live a life of wild, unfettered freedom—some by choice, but many by necessity—in cities and towns around the world. At age twenty-two, writer Chris Urquhart left a life of middle-class comfort to document the lives of these young nomads for a magazine feature. Captivated, she followed them for three more years. In honest prose interspersed with photographs portraying the grimy beauty of nomadic life, Dirty Kids tells the story of how Urquhart lived alongside runaways, crust punks, and dropouts, hippies, Deadheads, and Rainbows in an attempt to belong in their world. But the road took its toll, and along the way, Urquhart found suffering alongside the freedom—mental health issues, substance abuse, and fears of violence marred her journey. Despite all that, the warm, welcoming family of travelers and their radically alternative culture of sharing, generosity, and non-capitalistic collaboration forever changed her outlook on life and her understanding of freedom.

Chris Urquhart’s writing has appeared in Adbusters, COLORS, Maisonneuve, the Santiago Times, and Esquire Russia. Urquhart lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Micah White is the lifelong activist who co-created Occupy Wall Street, a global social movement, while an editor of Adbusters magazine. Named by Esquire as one of the most influential young thinkers of today, White is the author of The End of Protest: A New Playbook for Revolution. has chronicled the daily lives of teens at a Texas high school, told the story of a Venezuelan cult, and followed a group of nomadic youth across the U.S.

len from him by his coach, charismatic predator Graham James, Greg Gilhooly describes in anguishing detail the mental torment he suffered both during and long after the abuse as well as the terrible reality behind the sanitized term “sexual assault.” James confessed to sexually assaulting Sheldon Kennedy and Theo Fleury and was convicted of both crimes. But he neither confessed to nor was convicted for his sexual assault of Gilhooly, depriving Gilhooly of the judicial closure he craved. Gilhooly also provides a valuable legal perspective—as both a victim and a lawyer—missing from other such memoirs, and he delivers a powerful indictment of a legal system that, he argues, does not adequately deal with serial sexual child abuse or allocate enough resources to rehabilitation of either the abuser or the victim. Most important, Gilhooly offers hope, affirmation, and inspiration for those who have suffered abuse and for their loved ones.

Greg Gilhooly is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law and has held senior positions in numerous corporations. He has shared his story with the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, CBC, and other media, and is in demand as a public speaker and a media commentator. He lives in Oakville, Ontario.

NO REFUGE FOR WOMEN The Tragic Fate of Syrian Refugees Maria von Welser An exposé of the hidden suffering that over half of Syria’s refugees endure and the conflicts they continue to flee.

who flee Syria in search of safety. When boatloads of Syrian refugees began arriving on European shores in the spring of 2015, Western television screens were filled with images of men. Where, journalist Maria von Welser asked herself, were the women and children, whom she knew made up over half the population of refugee camps? In these pages, von Welser reveals the hidden stories of those Syrian women and children. There are stories of desperation and predation: loss of wealth and of life, child marriage, rape, kidnapping, and sex slavery. But there are also stories of empowerment and hope—including the conviction that we can turn compassion into real change. The book provides insight into the “refugee crisis” from Syria to Europe (and beyond) since desperation forced Syrians to flee their homes. But it is the stories of the women and children in particular which obsessed von Welser and made her undertake this book, and it is they who are at its heart.

MARIA VON Welser is a German journalist, television presenter, and author. She has reported from Chechnya, Croatia, Gaza, and India and was London Bureau Chief for National German Broadcaster ZDF. She is the former Vice Chair of UNICEF Germany.

Vancouver has long been a city on edge. From the 1907 Asian race riots to the Amchitka protests, from Doukhobor demonstrations to the Stanley Cup riots, Vancouver has a long and rich history of making its opinions and passions known, and in some cases, felt. In City on Edge, Kate Bird presents striking images from the Vancouver Sun and Province photo collection depicting moments when the city stood up, took to the streets, and rallied for change—or exploded in anger. Whether planned or spontaneous, revolutionary or reactionary, peaceful or destructive, these moments caught on camera are proof of the unique restless energy and constant appetite for change in this wildest of cities.

K ate Bird helped manage the photograph collection at the Vancouver Sun and Province for twenty-five years. She is the author of the bestselling Vancouver in the Seventies and has been the researcher for numerous books, including Making Headlines: 100 Years of the Vancouver Sun, which won the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award at the 2013 BC Book Prizes. She lives in Vancouver, B.C. Charles Demers is an author, stand-up comedian, and faculty member in the Creative Writing Program at the University of British Columbia. no age limit for erotic joy. Through interviews with countless older French women and men, de Hennezel uncovers a plethora of tips for enjoying a rich and satisfying sex life after age sixty. She suggests that perhaps the most important point is to have a positive self-image—to love yourself—and instead of worrying about wrinkles and other outward signs of aging, to cultivate an inner youthfulness, which, combined with a certain maturity, she says, can be sexier than youth all by itself. It is better to skip the plastic surgery and intense workouts at the gym and focus on sensuality, pleasure, and emotional intimacy instead. Other tips for how to keep that certain je ne sais quoi include forgetting about sexual performance, shifting from thinking about the body you have (how it looks in the mirror) to focusing on the body you are (how it feels), and being able to surrender during love and sex. Bringing a sense of humor and a bit of playfulness to the boudoir doesn’t hurt either.

The uncomplicated love and dedication of a dog can make anyone feel better— particularly a child who is small and vulnerable. Through beautiful, simple illustrations and words, The Dog shows how one animal helps a young boy who is ill. She is his comfort, his companion, and his friend; when he’s unhappy, she places her paw on his hand to show him she’s there. The Dog is a story for young children, and for anyone who has ever owned a pet. But most of all, it shows how important animal companionship is for children. The warmth of animal friends helps make life worth living, especially when times are tough.

On March 21, 1985, world-class wheelchair marathoner and multiple Paralympic medalist Rick Hansen set out from Vancouver, B.C., on his Man In Motion World Tour. The twenty-six-month trek took him and a small but determined crew almost 25,000 miles through thirty-four countries on four continents before crossing Canada. In the process, they raised $26 million for spinal cord research and for initiatives to improve the quality of life and accessibility for people with disabilities. Thirty years after the journey ended, Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion Tour celebrates that ground-breaking accomplishment and, with a foreword from Hansen himself, highlights the legacy of the Man In Motion World Tour and the amazing progress it has spurred up to the present day. Illustrated with 75 exclusive photographs from the Rick Hansen Foundation archives, it is a universal story of courage and adversity, human strength and personal suffering, and, above all, the power of community to effect lasting social change.

Jake MacDonald is the author of Houseboat Chronicles: Notes from a Life in Shield Country—which won the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction in 2002—as well as numerous books of fiction and nonfiction. He is also an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in Canadian Geographic, the Globe and Mail, the New York Times and many other publications. He lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rick Hansen, a three-time Paralympic gold medalist, is a Canadian icon best known as the “Man In Motion” for undertaking an epic two-year circumnavigation around the world in his wheelchair. He is now the CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, an organization committed to creating a world without barriers for people with disabilities.

acknowledged that human-caused climate change is a critical problem requiring urgent world-wide response. But although it offered hope, the Agreement was only the first step towards achieving the cleaner, brighter future we so desperately need. In Just Cool It!, Suzuki and Hanington implore us to take those next steps and create real, lasting change for the world. Drawing on new innovations such as smart grid power systems, biochar soil technologies, and algae-based biofuels, the authors outline practical, forward-thinking solutions to resolving the climate crisis. When enough people demand action, change starts happening—and this time, it could be monumental. In Paris, we agreed to save our planet. Just Cool It! shows us how to do it.

THE VEGETARIAN’S GUIDE TO EATING MEAT A Young Woman’s Search for Ethical Food Marissa L andrigan A young woman’s journey from vegetarian PETA activist to blood-and-guts-eating omnivore.

Growing up in a household of food-loving Italian-Americans, Marissa

Landrigan was always a black sheep—she barely knew how to boil water for pasta. But at college, she thought she’d discovered her purpose. Buoyed by animal rights activism and a feminist urge to avoid the kitchen, she transformed into a hardcore vegan activist, complete with shaved head. But Landrigan still hadn’t found her place in the world. She criss-crossed the U.S., striving to develop her career and maintain a relationship. Along the way, she discovered that eating ethically was far from simple—and cutting out meat was not the answer. As she got closer to the source of her food, eventually even visiting a slaughterhouse and hunting elk, Landrigan realized that the most ethical way of eating was to know her food—whether meat or vegetable—and prepare it herself, on her own terms, to eat with family and friends. Part memoir and part investigative journalism, The Vegetarian’s Guide to Eating Meat is as much a search for identity as it is a fascinating treatise on food.

Marissa L andrigan’s essays have appeared in numerous publications, including the Atlantic, Salon, Guernica, and Orion, and she runs the food-themed reading series Acquired Taste. She holds an MFA from Iowa State University and is currently an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh–Johnstown, where she teaches creative, professional, and digital writing.

DEMON IN MY BLOOD My Fight with Hep C—and a Miracle Cure Elizabeth Rains One woman’s shocking diagnosis with hepatitis C, her search for the cause, and her miraculous cure.

Was it wild parties and rough sex, a blood transfusion after childbirth or after a horrific accident involving a group of bikers, or perhaps some other event during the freewheeling 1960s and early 1970s that funneled the demon into her blood? Regardless, decades later, on the verge of cirrhosis, Elizabeth Rains had to confront the fact that she was infected with hepatitis C, often a death sentence. But Rains was lucky. She was able to obtain the new, tremendously costly lifesaving antivirals, and became one of the early patients to be cured. This book tells her story while also shedding light on the workings of this insidious disease, the suffering it has caused other victims, and the path to a cure for everyone.
