Big Fit Girl

Unleash Your Inner Athlete and Embrace the Body You Have LOUISE GREEN An inspiring and practical book that explains how women can overcome stereotypes and get fit.

Birdmania BERND BRUNNER __________________________________________________________________________________ This book is a window on the world of birders, who are mostly passionate, often quirky, and always interesting. In a book packed with scholarship and quirky detail, Bernd Brunner presents a series of thumbnail sketches of individuals throughout history and from all over the world who have been fascinated by birds, either as a hobby or as a profession. There is Aristotle, an early enthusiast who tried to discover some of their secrets; bird collectors such as Lord Walter Rothschild, who combed the world for exotic species on the verge of extinction; bird protectors such as Teddy Roosevelt, who shut down the workshops that fashioned feathered hats; bird conservationists such as American ornithologist George Archibald, who spent months performing a mating dance to induce an endangered whooping crane called Tex to lay an egg; and a lonely Australian widow who built a dancing platform for a lyre bird who came faithfully to entertain her with his splendor. This book is a window on the wonderful, passionate, and at times quirky, world of birders. Bernd Brunner’s books have been translated into a number of languages. He lectured at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts and Culture, New York City, at the Bancroft Library of the University of California at Berkeley, and at the Goethe Institute San Francisco. He splits his time between Berlin and Istanbul. Rights available: World English (excluding North America) 300 pages • Fall 2017

Couchsurfing in Iran STEPHEN ORTH __________________________________________________________________________________ A behind-the-scenes look at life via traveling in one of the world's most closed societies, Iran. The practice of ‘couchsurfing’, or sleeping in a series of other people’s homes in whatever space is available, is officially forbidden in Iran. Nevertheless, journalist Stephen Orth travels the country sleeping on the Persian carpets of twenty-two different hosts, experiencing the absurd, adventurous, and everyday, while slowly piecing together a picture of this supposedly rogue nation. Whether Orth is getting drunk on red wine with a prince or having a living room date with the whole family present, traveling in a stinking smugglers’ bus or angling in the Persian Gulf, every new encounter he relates pushes aside readers’ preconceptions and reveals the unparalleled hospitality of the Iranian people. Orth’s account of Iran offers a unique perspective of a culture typically misunderstood and often vilified. Stephen Orth has worked as an editor for Spiegel Online since 2008. An avid traveler, he has visited over fifty countries. Rights available: World English (excluding North America) 240 pages • Fall 2017

Cowboys of the Americas

LUIS FABINI AND WADE DAVIS __________________________________________________________________________________ A vivid portrait of cowboys throughout the Americas in images and words and a passionate exploration of their bond with horses and the land. For more than a decade, photographer Luis Fabini immersed himself in cowboy culture as he traveled through the Americas, drinking mate with the gauchos of Uruguay, riding with the huasos of Chile as they drove their cattle high into the mountains and forged through icy, fastflowing rivers, listening to the traditional songs of the vaqueiros of Brazil, and eating from a chuckwagon and sleeping in a teepee by the campfire with the cowboys of Texas. Everywhere he witnessed the symbiosis of man and horse and the land. This stunning collection of photographs from those travels reveals the cowboy who lives in silence and solitude, the interconnectedness of the men with the land, and a traditional way of life that exists on the outskirts of society but also vividly in our imagination. The book includes photographs from eight regions capturing the individual cowboy, the intimate relationship between a cowboy and his horse, and the vast mountain ranges and plains on which they work. An eloquent text by anthropologist and author Wade Davis reflects on the long relationship between horses and humans and illuminates the spirit in each of the cowboy cultures that Fabini has so impressively captured. Luis Fabini was born in Uruguay and began his career as a travel photographer in South America. His interest in photography began at age seven, when his father put a camera in his hands before the two embarked on a trip across the Andes. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. Wade Davis is an anthropologist, author, and explorer. He is the author of numerous books, including the 2009 Massey Lecture, entitled The Wayfinders. He has been described as “a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet, and passionate defender of all of life’s diversity.” He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Demon in My Blood

Blindsided by Hepatitis C and Stunned by Its Miraculous Cure ELIZABETH RAINS _______________________________________________________________________________ One woman’s shocking diagnosis with hepatitis C, her search for the cause, and her miraculous cure. Was it wild parties and rough sex, a blood transfusion after childbirth or after a horrific accident involving a group of bikers, or perhaps some other event during the freewheeling 1960s and early 1970s that funneled the demon into her blood? Regardless, decades later, on the verge of cirrhosis, Elizabeth Rains had to confront the fact that she was infected with hepatitis C, often a death sentence. But Rains was lucky. She was able to obtain the new and tremendously costly lifesaving antivirals, and became one of the early patients to be cured. This book tells her story while also shedding light on the workings of this insidious disease, the suffering it has caused other victims, and the path to a cure for everyone. Elizabeth Rains teaches university courses in writing and editing and has written for magazines and newspapers in North America, and Ireland. She was editorial director and publisher of Pacific Rim Magazine for fourteen years and holds a master's degree in journalism. The Demon in My Blood is her second non-fiction book. She lives in Gibson, British Columbia. Rights held: World, all languages 240 pages • Spring 2017

Frozen In Time

The Fate of the Franklin Expedition OWEN BEATTIE and JOHN GEIGER, Foreword by MARAGARET ATWOOD __________________________________________________________________________________ With new material on the discovery of Franklin’s lost ships Erebus and Terror. The international bestseller revealing the fate of the doomed Franklin Expedition—now with a new afterword on the discovery of Erebus and Terror, and a new section of color photos. In 1845, Sir John Franklin and his men set out to “penetrate the icy vastness of the north, and to circumnavigate America.” And then they disappeared. The truth about what happened to Franklin’s illfated Arctic expedition was shrouded in mystery for more than a century. Then, in 1984, Owen Beattie and his team exhumed two crew members from a burial site in the North for forensic evidence, to shocking results. But the most startling discovery didn’t come until 2014, when a team commissioned by the Canadian government uncovered one of the lost ships: Erebus, followed by the Terror, in 2016. Owen Beattie is a professor of anthropology at the University of Alberta. He has contributed to many forensic investigations in Canada, as well as to human rights and humanitarian projects in Rwanda, Somalia, and Cyprus. He lives in Edmonton, Alberta. John Geiger’s work has been translated into eight languages. He is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and lives in Toronto, Ontario. Rights available: World all languages (excl. An Intimate Wilderness

Arctic Voices in a Land of Vast Horizons NORMAN HALLENDY, Foreword by Dr. WILLIAM FITZHUGH __________________________________________________________________________________ An unforgettable and beautifully illustrated story of one man’s journeys in the eastern Arctic over 50 years, and a revealing look into the world of the Inuit. Arctic researcher, author, and photographer Norman Hallendy’s journey to the far north began in 1948, when many Inuit, who traditionally lived on the land, were moving to permanent settlements created by the government. In this unique memoir, Hallendy writes of his adventures, experiences with strange Arctic phenomena, encounters with wildlife, and deep friendships with Inuit elders. Very few have worked so closely with the Inuit to document their traditions, and in this book, beautifully illustrated with spectacular color photographs, Hallendy preserves their voices and paints an incomparable portrait of a vibrant culture in a remote landscape. Norman Hallendy is an internationally recognized Arctic ethnographer and chronicler of Inuit life and landscapes. His previous books include Inuksuit: Silent Messengers of the Arctic and Tukiliit: The Stone People Who Live in the Wind. He lives in Carp, Ontario. The Killer Whale Who Changed the World MARK LEIREN-YOUNG _________________________________________________________________________________ The fascinating and heartbreaking account of the first publicly exhibited captive killer whale—a story that forever changed the way we see orcas and sparked the movement to save them. Killer whales had always been seen as bloodthirsty sea monsters. That all changed when a young killer whale was captured off the west coast of North America and displayed to the public in 1964. Moby Doll— as the whale became known—was an instant celebrity, drawing twenty thousand visitors on the one and only day he was exhibited. He died within a few months, but his famous gentleness sparked a worldwide crusade that transformed how people understood and appreciated orcas. Because of Moby Doll, we stopped fearing “killers” and grew to love and respect “orcas.” Mark Leiren-Young is a journalist, filmmaker and author. His article for the Walrus on Moby Doll was a finalist for the National Magazine Award, and he won the Jack Webster award for his CBC Idea’s radio documentary Moby Doll: The Whale Who Changed the World. Leiren-Young is currently finishing a feature length film documentary on Moby Doll. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia. The World Wide Wheelchair Tour

Passion, Perseverance, and the Impact for People with Disability RICK HANSEN and JAKE MACDONALD __________________________________________________________________________________ On March 21, 1985, Rick Hansen set out on his Man in Motion World Tour. Injured in a truck accident at age fifteen, Hansen had become a world-class wheelchair marathoner and multiple medalist at the 1980 and 1984 Summer Paralympics, but he aspired to do something bigger: he wanted to improve the lives of people with disabilities by proving their potential and removing barriers. The result was a 26-month trek that would take him through 34 countries on four continents. In the process, they raised millions for spinal cord research and initiatives to improve the quality of life and accessibility for people with disabilities. Thirty years on, the lessons from the Man in Motion tour are as relevant as they were when Hansen and his team returned to cheering crowds in Vancouver in 1987. As the Man in Motion tour showed, the bigger we dream, often the more we inspire others to step up and share not only the joys and the successes but the despair and the hardship too. It is a universal story of courage and adversity, human strength and personal suffering and, above all, the power of community to effect lasting social change. Rick Hansen is a world renowned Paralympian, activist, and philanthropist for people with disabilities. Jake Macdonald is the author of numerous fiction and non-fiction books, and an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in the Globe and Mail and the New York Times, amongst others. Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss DR. JASON FUNG __________________________________________________________________________________ A revolutionary examination of why every diet you’ve tried has failed and how that can change now. In addition to his five basic steps, a set of lifelong habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels, Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin dependence and reach a healthy weight – for good. Rise of the Necrofauna

Are We Ready to Reverse Extinction? BRITT WRAY _________________________________________________________________________________ An exploration of the cultural, ethical, environmental, legal, social, and philosophical issues that deextinction unleashes. In 2003, the first extinct species was successfully – albeit briefly – “brought back to life” when a team of Spanish scientists cloned Celia – the last Pyrenean ibex – from cells that were removed from her ear and frozen just before she died. Now, years later, she is no longer an anomaly but is joined by a menagerie of other extinct species that scientists are trying to recreate. In Rise of the Necrofauna Britt Wray explores the emerging movement of de-extinction, in which extinct creatures like the woolly mammoth, passenger pigeon, aurochs, and gastric frog are being remade with the hope of returning them to the wild one day. But the possible unintended consequences of these experiments are legion, and opinions about whether and how humans should decide what species should be resurrected are as diverse as the ancient DNA that this research relies on. The book focuses on the ethical, environmental, and legal implications of de-extinction, among other issues, while also explaining the science behind it, unraveling the history of how we got here, and getting inside the minds and personalities of those who have pioneered this new scientific phenomenon. Britt Wray is a radio broadcaster and writer and has worked as a host and producer on programs for CBC Radio. She also prepared and presented a feature documentary on de-extinction for CBC Radio’s Ideas and has won numerous radio and broadcasting awards. She holds a BSc in Biology from Queen’s University and is a PhD candidate at the University of Copenhagen in Media, Cognition, and Communication. She lives in Copenhagen, Denmark. www.brittwray.com Rights available: World all languages (excluding North America) 272 pages • Fall 2017

Reinventing Prosperity

Managing Economic Growth to Reduce Unemployment, Inequality, and Climate Change GRAEME MAXTON and JORGEN RANDERS __________________________________________________________________________________ A persuasive economic argument that proves we can all live better lives in this finite world. The biggest challenges facing human wellbeing today are widening income inequality, continuing global poverty, and environmental degradation. All these problems are simple to solve—in theory. In practice, however, they are much more complex to solve, because most of the commonly proposed “solutions” are simply not acceptable to people and governments who are focused on the short-term. In Reinventing Prosperity, Graeme Maxton and Jorgen Randers offer a new approach with thirteen recommendations that should be possible to implement during the period of slow economic growth around the world. This book addresses the forty-year-old growth/no-growth debate by explaining how it is possible to reduce unemployment, poverty, inequality, and the pace of climate change and still have economic growth—if we want. Graeme Maxton is the Secretary General of the Club of Rome. He is the author of The End of Progress– How Modern Economics Has Failed Us, which was nominated for the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award. He lives in Zurich, Switzerland. Jorgen Randers is a professor of climate strategy at the Norwegian Business School. He is also a former Deputy Director General of WWF International and a co-author of the bestselling Limits to Growth. He lives in Oslo, Norway. The Vegetarian’s Guide to Eating Meat A Young Woman’s Search for Ethical Food

MARISSA LANDRIGAN __________________________________________________________________________________ A young woman’s journey from vegetarian PETA activist to blood-and-guts-eating omnivore. Growing up in a household of food-loving Italian-Americans, Marissa Landrigan was always a black sheep—she barely knew how to boil water for pasta. But at college, she thought she’d found her purpose. Buoyed by animal rights activism and a feminist urge to avoid the kitchen, she transformed into a hardcore vegan activist, complete with shaved head. But Landrigan still hadn’t found her place in the world. Striving to develop her career and maintain a relationship, she criss-crossed the U.S. Along the way, she discovered that eating ethically was far from simple—and cutting out meat was not the answer. As she got closer to the source of her food, eventually even visiting a slaughterhouse and hunting elk, Landrigan realized that the most ethical way of eating was to know her food and prepare it herself. Part memoir and part investigative journalism, The Vegetarian’s Guide to Eating Meat is as much a search for identity as it is a fascinating treatise on food. Marissa Landrigan’s essays have appeared in numerous publications, including the Atlantic, Salon, Guernica, and Orion, and she runs the food-themed reading series Acquired Taste. She holds an MFA from Iowa State University and is currently an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh–Johnstown, where she teaches creative, professional, and digital writing. The Woman Who Says No

Françoise Gilot on Her Life With and Without Picasso MALTE HERWIG __________________________________________________________________________________ An intimate and revealing biography of the talented artist who chose to leave Picasso. Françoise Gilot’s ex-lover Pablo Picasso called her “the woman who says no.” She may have spent her life in the company of men who changed the world—Picasso, Matisse, and Jonas Salk—but Gilot forged vital relationships with ground-breaking artists and scientists on her own terms, creating an artistic style all her own, translated into an enormous collection of paintings and drawings held by private collectors and public museums around the world. In her early nineties, she generously shared her hospitality and wisdom with writer Malte Herwig, who started out as an interviewer but found himself drawn into the role of pupil as Gilot, whom he called “a philosopher of joy,” introduced him to different ways of seeing the world.
