Poquoson Historical and Cultural Museum Foundation The Poquoson Historical and Cultural Museum Foundation (www.poquosonmuseum.com) was formed in 2001 to foster, preserve and promote the historical and cultural enrichment of Poquoson through education and establishment of a museum. The Poquoson Museum is a private non-profit organization with an all-volunteer staff. The Museum’s farmhouse is open for visitors on weekends and the campus is open daily for the public to take self-guided tours. Many visitors to the Museum are surprised when they arrive to find that there is more on the campus than just the farmhouse housing the museum proper. Those 15 acres have been transformed into a unique historical campus. The campus consists of the circa 1910 farm house (now the museum building), the circa 1940 "Miss Becky's Store", a circa 1930 building once used as a polling place and several other significant agricultural outbuildings. True to Poquoson’s farming heritage, the local Master Gardeners have partnered with the Museum to establish learning and demonstration garden and the Colonial Beekeepers are putting in a Learning Bee Yard. In 2013, the Museum dedicated their Marsh Walk Nature Trail, a one mile loop down to Topping Creek that includes several boardwalks and observation decks that provide views of the salt marsh and Back River. The nature trail gives Poquoson its own unique interpretive urban tree trail, one that focuses on the marsh landscapes typical of the Chesapeake shoreline waterways and marshes. Over 100 native trees and shrubs have been planted along the trail and more will be planted this fall. The trail provides a recreational and educational resource for the citizens and students of Poquoson. Partnerships with Master Gardeners and Colonial Beekeepers In 2013, the Museum partnered with the York County/ City of Poquoson Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension. The Museum provided the York County/Poquoson Master Gardeners a 1/3 acre site behind the Museum’s barn for the York/Poquoson Master Gardeners to establish the “Poquoson Learning Garden. The garden features sustainable gardening practices that homeowners can implement and showcases cut flowers, vegetables, herbs and perennials in demonstration gardens. In 2015, the Museum developed a second partnership with the Colonial Beekeepers Association who are currently establishing a Learning Bee Yard at the Museum. The bee yard is located adjacent to the Master Gardener’s Wildflower Meadow display and will be another educational resource for visitors. The Museum Campus is now a Certified Wildlife Habitat and the Learning Garden has been designated as a Pollinator Habitat. You can visit the Museum and the Learning Bee Yard anytime to see how the honeybees are doing, or you can come join us in one of our learning opportunities that we have scheduled. We can also provide some insights about these honeybees and their hives if you have a group of people who want to learn more. It is not necessary to have bees to join the CBA. The CBA has a complete website which is a great place to begin: http://www.colonialbeekeepers.com/ A New Exhibit will be opening soon at the Poquoson Museum The Poquoson Museum in cooperation with the Poquoson Fire Department is proud to present a new exhibit commemorating “The 75th Anniversary of the Poquoson Fire Department.” The exhibit will focus on the Professional and Volunteer Fire Departments as well as its Ladies Auxiliary. Memorabilia from “Sparky” and the early firefighters will be on display! Come visit the Museum on the weekends to enjoy this exhibit. The Poquoson Fire Department has a long proud history of service to the community with some firsts for the area including the first female ambulance drivers. Come join us in celebrating the Fire Department and learn more about its amazing history. We are looking for a few great volunteers! 1. Docents: We need volunteers who are willing to work at the museum one Saturday or Sunday afternoon a month from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. to lead tours, answer questions, give out printed information, and to staff the gift shop. We would like to have two people in the museum when we are open. You will receive training. 2. Buildings and Grounds: We need volunteers to help with the following: a. Mowing and trimming. b. Trash pickup along the Marsh Walk Nature Trail. c. Occasional help with outdoor projects – such as announced. 3. Programs Committee: The Programs Committee is always looking for individuals who are interested in helping to plan future programs for the Poquoson Museum. Our meetings are usually on Monday nights from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., but meeting dates are flexible based on scheduling conflicts. If you have a few hours to spare please contact one of the following: Paul Whitlow at 868-6899 Noel Talcott at nancynoeltalcott@verizon.net Mary Clemons at marybclemons@verizon.net Annual Membership Drive Come and take a stroll around the campus – check out the Learning Garden, Bee Yard and/or take a walk along the Marsh Walk Nature Trail. If you like what you see we ask for your support through a membership or donation. Our annual membership drive begins in January of each year and everyone is invited to join. The membership form is available on the Museum website www.poquosonmuseum.com. 23

From the Desk of Your City Engineer Bacteria: A lot of Pollution for a Little Bit of Waste

There have been a lot of media reports lately about bacterial outbreaks. Did you know our local streams and rivers have a bacteria problem? Fecal coliform is abundant in our local waterways. One gram of animal waste is roughly the weight of a paperclip. That paperclip’s worth of waste contains around 20,000,000 bacterial colonies. Given the right conditions, bacteria multiplies quickly in our waterways. Poquoson has made great strides over the last 15 years to reduce sources of bacteria in our streams and rivers. The sewer system was expanded in the early 2000’s. That meant leaching septic tanks were replaced with sewer connections. As part of the City’s regional Consent Order work, sewer manholes were retrofitted with water tight caps; sewer lines were smoke-tested to identify leaks; pipes were lined; and a pump station was upgraded. The work appears to be paying off. Recent DEQ bacterial testing shows reduced levels of bacteria in our surrounding waterways. You can help reduce the bacteria threat. Scoop the poop when you walk your pets and prevent contaminated storm water from reaching our waters. If your Homeowner’s Association or civic group is interested in making Poquoson a cleaner place, check out the AskHrGreen website at http://askhrgreen.org/pet-waste-station-grant/ . Poquoson has several pet waste stations in need of adoption. If your organization commits to keeping litter bags stocked and regularly emptying the trash, it can receive a pet waste station free of charge. It’s a great way to improve our local water quality and make your neighborhood a little nicer for walking. Geese and ducks don’t get a free pass, either. Don’t feed the water fowl. Feeding waterfowl encourages them to stay, and when they stay, they produce waste. More waste means more bacterial runoff. Pump, don’t dump. Don’t empty your boat privy tank into the water. You may not know this, but Poquoson has two boat pump out stations that are free to citizens: One is located at the City dock near the Rens Road boat ramp, and one is located at Messick Point. Stop by Public Works, City Hall and Community Recreation offices if you would like free tokens used to operate the pump outs.

From the Office of Building & Planning What is a Nor’easter? Hurricane season ends November 1st; however, remember to stay vigilant and ready for a nor’easter. A nor’easter is a cyclonic storm that moves along the east coast of North America. It’s called “nor’easter” because the winds over coastal areas blow from a northeasterly direction. Nor’easters may occur any time of the year, but are most frequent and strongest between September and April. These storms usually develop between Georgia and New Jersey within 100 miles of the coastline and generally move north or northeastward. In addition to heavy snow and rain, nor’easters can bring gale force winds greater than 58 miles per hour. These storms can produce rough seas, coastal flooding and beach erosion. You can prepare for a Nor’easter by taking the following actions: Stockpile food and drinking water before a nor’easter arrives. Store flashlights and candles within easy reach in case of power failures. Make a flood plan with your family and include evacuation routes out of your home. Make sure anything that might be blown away by high winds is secured or moved to a protected area. Keep all pets inside during the storm. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards for the latest storm watches and warnings; be sure to check weather.gov 26 frequently for new forecast information.

Storm Preparedness in Poquoson Let’s all be good neighbors during Tidal Weather Events in Our City Poquoson residents are known throughout the region as friendly, community-focused citizens who exemplify the “neighborly spirit”. Occasionally, Poquoson receives higher than usual tide in low-lying areas of the City and across City streets. Poquoson residents are adept at handling these tidal events and working through them with thoughtful preparation and good-natured resiliency. You can help your neighbors in these areas as well by avoiding vehicular travel in these areas during high tide. Wave action from vehicles driving down flooded streets can and does cascade into homes, garages and other property structures. Please note road closures, and no wake signs posted throughout the City and heed them during times of tide. Your neighbors will be grateful.
