Coastal Multi Species Pasture Forum

Heads Up at Bowlo!

Join us 0n 4 November at Hanleys Creek, We are fortunate enough to be joined in Dungog, for a dive into multi species our discussion by Dr Christine Jones, planting in the NSW coastal context. who has seen it all, all over the world, and lives in a coastal NSW catchment. out west, or overseas, doesn't always turn out like the photos, and people give up after the first year. But not you. This event is designed to start nutting out what DOES work, to learn from the successes and 'failures' encountered on the journey, and to inspire your work to keep improving your profitability and the health of your land. This forum is a facilitated discussion. It will be very different to your typical field day or workshop. Instead, we will come together as a community of practice and learn from the experiences in the room as we move through all the ins and outs of growing multi species mixes; from planting methods, to seed mixes and seed dressings, to measures of success. As well as discussing the practicalities, the day will start to push some boundaries of what coastal multi species plantings could look like, and be based in some of the latest science.

This fantastic networking opportunity will be enhanced by an epic local produce lunch put on by our hosts, Ethical Farmers. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements. The discussion will be facilitated by Lee Fieldhouse of Island Biologicals. Lee often serves as a primary touchstone for people wanting to try growing practices new to them, such as multi species plantings; and through his work has also become well connected with research and people who are pushing frontiers in this space. He is interested in bringing it all together so we can get a boost in productivity for the east coast. There will be notes taken from the day and collated into information for further resources. But then Smith recovered to win 25 to 22 after 27 ends. G.K.Smith is Graeme Smith, one of Gresford’s great club champions, with 10 singles titles spanning 33 years. And I.G.Griffiths is Ingrid Griffiths who could have been the first woman in the club’s history to win the championship. As things turned out it was not to be her day. Graeme’s experience and skill enabled him to hang on and win. Congratulations Graeme on another title and also Ingrid for getting so close. It was an extraordinary, exciting and memorable final. The shire bowls tournament, kindly hosted by Clarence Town, saw Gresford teams contest the pairs, triples and fours finals. Ingrid and Ben Griffiths, husband and wife super couple, prevailed in the

What's On the Shelves? by Glenda Smith

The Bitterroots C. J. Box

Cassie Dewell is the subject of a series of novels by Box, who is also the author of the popular Joe Pickett mysteries. One of these, Breaking Point, was reviewed here recently. Cassie is a private investigator, and like Joe Pickett, works in the mountainous north-western states of the USA, which are familiar territory to the writer. This book is set in Montana, where Cassie is starting to establish her business, but she is not yet successful enough to pick and choose her jobs. A lawyer she owes some financial loyalty to sends her into the backblocks to confirm the evidence of a case of child molestation she is working on, and Cassie enters a world of tyranny and corruption, when she comes up against the Kleinsasser family, who have accused one of their own.

pairs; Trevor Bird, Lee Collison and Brett ‘Pup’ Pratten, a formidable threesome, blitzed the triples; the Will Osmond, Mick Kealey, Tommy Everett, Brett Pratten combination were too good in the fours. Well done all finalists. You did us proud. Go Gresford! Peter Dreyer

Cassie is diligent and creative, but almost out of her depth in the environs of the Kleinsassers, who have most of the township on a string. The narrative has enough twists and tension to keep the reader interested even though the execution of it does not seem as polished as the previously reviewed novel. Perhaps the landscape’s dominance had much to do with that. Here, there is a backdrop of forest fires to add an element of menace, but generally Cassie is not tuned in to the natural world. However, she is an admirable character who sustains the story. All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder. Also have a look in the street library.

Food chat with Fiona...

Happy Spring rains. I have been working hard on my new gardens, liberating my plants from the pots they have lived in the last 18 months and this shower is just what they need. What to plant? My intention is to try and only eat fresh from the garden, not fall for the ease of shop bought. I have walking onions (like a spring onion) and bunching leeks to give onion flavour all year around – email me if you want a baby to grow.

I noticed the Okro soup (it’s name in Ghana) was bright green last time I was in Ghana. Usually it is a dull green, but I was there in the wet season so it was fresh. It is so loved they dry it so it can be used all year around. Such a hardy and generous plant Okra would be a good vegie to grow in our hot and increasingly dry summers. It is what gives Gumbo and Okro soup that slimey texture (can you think of a more appealing word? I can’t) It has a great flavour but add a drop of water and it goes weird. In India it is loved and cooked without water and has a normal veg texture. Fry up your spices in a little oil, wash and DRY carefully your okra, then cook gently in the spices and oil and you will have a delightful veg dish. Okra is easy to grow, tough and has a lovely flower. Email me if you want some of the onion or leeks or recipes fiona@ creative-arts-safaris.com

Get the Bat Facts Flying-foxes & microbats are known for their important work in pest control, pollinating plants and dispersing seeds for the regeneration of our forests but their presence close to communities is also a hotly contested topic. Nine flying-fox camps have been monitored in Dungog Shire since 2012 as part of the Commonwealth Government’s National Flying-fox Monitoring Program. While many of the flying-fox camps are located in less populated areas a number are closer to the population centres of Dungog, Clarence Town and Gresford.

Gresford & District Landcare Group

Gresford District Landcare met at the beautiful property of Ron & Christine Andrews at Torryburn for its October meeting. Being the first of the evening meetings during daylight savings months, we were able to enjoy the end of the day, overlooking beautiful countryside whilst enjoying a talk given by James Kater and his colleague, Muk from Biocarbon, a local company which produces biocarbon products, wood vinegar and bio char that

have many practical benefits for industry, including agriculture. The presentation was particularly focused on the agricultural benefits of bio char. James explained that this product can be added to stock feed, can be used as soil conditioner, stimulating soil biota, sequestering carbon, improving water holding capacity, thereby contributing to sustainable

agriculture by reducing dependency on chemicals. All agreed that it is a very exciting prospect for the advancement in regenerative farming methods. After the presentation, the committee provided the usual sausage sizzle which was enjoyed by all. The next Landcare meeting will be held on November 13 at 5pm. DEFENCE CORPS - Plans for Formation in Newcastle Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate - Thursday 8 May 1941, Page 6 Military officers, officers of the Returned Soldiers' Volunteer Defence Corps, and a special representative of Major-General Heane met in Newcastle yesterday and discussed the part Newcastle will play in the Volunteer Defence Corps or Home Guard. As announced by the Minister for the Army (Mr. Spender) on Tuesday. It was decided to go ahead with the formation of the corps in Newcastle. The necessary forms for enlistment are expected to be available by the weekend. These, it is understood, will be distributed to the various centres. Men between 18 and 65, it is understood, will be accepted, providing they can pass a medical test. It is not expected, though, that men over 55 will be called on for the more active work. Enrolment in the corps, it is understood, will not exempt men of military age from becoming liable for registration or being called up for military duty under a section of the Defence Act. It will

Council Happenings

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

5 Steps to being bushfire prepared The bush fire season is officially upon us, and with forecasts for a hot and dry El Nino summer ahead, it’s time to do what we can to stay safe by being prepared with a bush fire plan. We have unfortunately already seen plenty of fire action in our local community with numerous state forest and road closures put in place during the week of 18th September due to fires burning in the Allyn River and Bee Box areas. Five simple steps you can put in place now will help protect your property, including: 1 • Trim overhanging trees and shrubs. 2 • Mow your grass and remove your cuttings. Have a cleared area around your home. 3 • Remove material and objects that can burn around your house such as doormats, wood piles, outdoor furniture and mulch. 4 • Clear and remove all the leaves and debris from around your house and your gutters. 5 • Be prepared! Have some sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all the way around your house. If you need more information on how to prepare your fire plan, please visit NSW RFS - NSW Rural Fire Service
