Gresford Vacy Football Club While Gresford Vacy Football Club players are enjoying the off-season with Saturday morning sleep-ins, work is going on behind the scenes to ready the mighty Scorpions for Season 2024. Jim Doyle was re-elected club president at the recent AGM and he is joined on the executive team by vicepresident (senior) Luke Barker, vice-president (junior) Clint Booth, treasurer Cathy Easdown and secretary Jack Cowled. Bec Cowled will build on a record year in the canteen by again taking on the role of canteen manager, however, help is needed from an assistant canteen manager. If you're interested in taking on this rewarding role at home games, please reach out to the club. All other committee positions have been filled and there is also support from dedicated general committee members, including four juniors who may one day end up running the club! The Scorps will be sporting new uniforms in Season 2024 and thanks to the support of generous sponsors these will be provided to all players at no cost. The design of the new strips is being investigated and will soon be ready to go into production. The club has big plans for 2024 with ground improvements to complement the new clubhouse. A range of landscaping projects are in the pipeline, as well as improved spectator seating. Any sponsors keen to support the club, its players and the grounds at Gresford Sporting Complex can contact Jim Doyle on 0407 307 800.

PAGG lends support to Imagination Library Now in its twelfth year, the Paterson Allyn Garden Group has a proud record of supporting community initiatives. Members not only enjoy themselves at their monthly get togethers in beautiful gardens, they actively fundraise for a variety of community causes. The latest one is the rollout throughout the Dungog Shire of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library whereby the parents of children from 0–5 years can sign up to receive an age-specific book each month in the mail. The children are excited each month to receive their very own parcel, which also includes an activity sheet for parents. Started by Dolly Parton in the USA nearly 30 years ago, this program has had significant success in addressing literacy rates in young children and helping to prepare them for school. Research shows that children who are not exposed to books and reading from a young age tend to struggle with literacy, often all their lives, such as Dolly Parton’s father.

The Imagination Library is being managed by la ocal group, Dungog Early Literacy Inc, and has the support of the Dungog Shire Council as a shire-wide initiative. Anyone wishing to know more about the program can contact Lisa Connors on 0408 272 197. The Garden Group has donated $1,515 to assist in rolling out the program. This follows on the back of $5,000 for a portable oxygen unit for Palliative Care, and over $17,000 for the Gresford Community Park towards the construction of the new gazebo. Other causes include $1,640 for “Buy a Bale” back in 2018 during the drought; $2,500 as a drought donation to the local CWA the following year; $200 to the Flying Doctors; and $353 for brain cancer research. Spending time outdoors in our gardens, our member gardeners are by and large a happy and contented group. It is a great joy for us to be able to pass on a bit of that happiness to others.

Vacy’s Magical Mystery Tour Last Friday on the 17.11.23 Vacy Public School put on a show of a lifetime! Singing, dancing and acting, all of the Vacy Public School students and teachers participated in this wonderful event. Two sold out shows told a story of how The Beatles rose to fame and became one of the greatest bands in the world. Sarah Reynolds (Year 5), who was also one of the main characters said “My favourite part would be the acting because it was just a fun experience and a good thing to be proud of.” The actress rehearsed during her lunch break for many weeks. All teachers taught dances to their class, with some guest choreographers from the community helping out.

Vacy Public School is very grateful for all of the support from Over 400 tickets across two shows friends and family and were sold to the community who gave raving reviews. Gresford Community Table Dinner

The Gresford Arboretum was a delightful setting for the return of the Community Table Dinner on Friday 17th. Over 40 people attended, and it was lovely to meet a number of new faces. The Gresford District Community Group provided a delicious meal, generously supported by Gresford Gourmet Country Meats. Jim Doyle, President of the GDCG, thanked everyone for supporting the evening and encouraged involvement in community organisations and events for

the betterment of community with Vanessa Barwick sharing her personal experience of the value of the Community Table Dinners. Penny Kater thanked the many people who volunteer their time to develop and maintain the Arboretum and shared with the crowd the nickname of the sculpture, “Honeyroo”, as chosen by the students of Gresford Public School. Cameron Archer announced that the Dorothy Mackellar history board, that was featured in the September edition of The

News, will be displayed in the Arboretum and will be one of 12 point of interest sites featuring in a tourist drive being promoted by Dungog Regional Tourism. Community Table Dinners are a great way to meet fellow residents, provide an opportunity to ask a question only a local would know the answer and share a meal, drink and a yarn with friends old and new. We hope to see you at the next Community Table Dinner in February.

Maitland Classic Motor Annual Show & Shine at the Hotel Beatty Fellows' 1968 Norton Commando taking the gongs for best in category. Anaiya, a young soloist finished off a great day with some laid back tunes on the deck of the Beatty. Congratulations to all. Happy Motoring.

Sunday 19th November saw the grounds of the Hotel Beatty rumble and backfire as the Maitland Classic Motor Assoc had it's 11th Annual Gresford Show & Shine. It was a beautiful sunny day and the recent rains meant the grounds after being slashed by Beau Cowley were in perfect condition for a car and bike show. Although not a record roll up, the total of 118 cars, bikes and trucks meant there was plenty to see and something for everyone. Karen Turnbull and the tennis girls

SELLING IN SUMMER Consider: List and sell now in December with settlement in January/ February in the New Year? Listing onto the market can be organised around the seasons. Settlements can be negotiated to suit your needs as a Vendor, and still look after the Buyers. Or get ready to list in January, and sell in new Year. With Summer rain now forecast and paddocks greening up (ever the optimist), you can book photography and video to take advantage of greener conditions, so you are ready in advance of when you choose to go onto the market. Don’t wait and risk drier paddocks showing on your photo shoot. As soon as you feel your farm is looking good, that is the time to organise the photographer and videographer.

Need help to get organised? Phone Pamela 0427 207542 Free help and advice in preparing your property to get the best results. Pamela coordinates the photo shoots, and video. Best to do this when you have time to do so, without seasonal pressures. www.pmcountryestates.com.au

Gresford & District Landcare Group For their November meeting, Gresford District Landcare met at the Eccleston property of Sarah Sivyer where she runs an innovative, pasture raised egg production business, “Just Been Laid” in conjunction with her 250 head beef cattle herd. Both businesses are run in accordance with regenerative soil and pasture management practices. Sarah has been running the egg production business for 7 years and supplies cafes in Newcastle and also runs an egg subscription business where people can subscribe to receive weekly eggs. In addition to supplying cafes and subscribers “Just Been laid” donates 5% of their production to community kitchens which produce food for charities and those that need a good meal. Since the commencement of the business Sarah has donated over 100,000 eggs.

Sarah explained to those assembled, how she and her team move the mobile sheds that the chickens live in every week, so that the birds have fresh pickings and the land is not detrimentally affected by the birds constantly remaining in the same location. She feeds the birds vegetarian meal so that there is no risk of cross

Sarah highlighted some of the difficulties she and her team have had to overcome during covid including having to pivot more towards direct-to-customer sales through the subscription business given that many of the cafes and restaurants being supplied suddenly cancelled their orders as a result of the covid shutdowns.

After Sarah’s presentation and short walk to view a shed at closer quarters (though outside the fenced area for bio-security reasons) those assembled enjoyed a sausage sizzle provided by the committee in Sarah’s top shed which she is hoping to expand into a destination venue for agri-tourism and such like with the ability to provide coffee and light refreshments. Sarah generously gave everyone a carton of her beautiful eggs to take home.

Cows and echidnas Vanessa’s thinking is that you are better off focusing on your best bit of dirt first. This year she has been sowing multispecies forage mixes and is looking to see the value you get out of using biological coatings on the seed and planting with a variety of plant families.

Fourteen local farmers enjoyed a field day at Vanessa and Darren Barwick’s property near Vacy on Friday 17th of November. Some heavy showers of rain in the morning meant we had to shelter in the Barwick’s new shed, but I don’t think anyone minded, and if anything the rain had everyone smiling.

Vanessa is currently fencing off the last two dams and looking to plant more trees for shade and biodiversity. “There’s lots of upside here … and we’re getting there! We had an echidna walk through our lawn last night … so that was awesome.”

Vanessa has been working hard to improve the 211 acre farm since they moved there in 2015, and you can certainly see the results. The five original paddocks have been split according to the type of pasture, are now twenty-one smaller paddocks which are grazed in a rotation.

to your cattle … you see a really big result in the cows and calves.”

Hunter Local Land Services is supporting field days on local farms to showcase what people are doing to improve their productivity and maintain the environmental values on their properties. The next one is being hosted by Peter Dreyer at Mount Rivers on 1st December. Peter has a quite intensive stock rotation, has been using some very low tech methods for multi-species sowing, and has a clever way of managing his stock when he goes away for a couple of weeks at a time.

In 2017 the flats were split into six paddocks, three of which have been sown with various pasture mixes.

For more information contact Col Freeman, Hunter Local Land Services on 0428 043 427.

Vanessa uses a grazing chart to keep track of where the stock are up to in the rotation, and strip grazes with electric fencing. This has given more “grazing days” which has enabled her to build cow numbers to around 60 and increase the average weaner sale weights from 260kg to 340 kg. Vanessa said that increasing stock density meant we needed better water infrastructure. “The first thing after fencing the riverbank was a header tank and gravity feed to troughs. Something I have realised is how good fresh water is

Highlights from Chamber of Commerce Annual Report At the time of our AGM in November last year the business community was at that stage fairly optimistic about the year ahead, but continued interest rate rises and cost of living increases has put a downward pressure on spending particularly in retail, along with the increased costs to do business. It is pleasing to see though, that our local businesses are still up and running, and some even expanding, and new businesses have opened. Our Shire has been described as trendy by Matt Brown from Perception Planning, guest speaker at one of our networking dinner meetings earlier this year, because of the number of development applications being placed before Dungog Shire. I think this reflects that we are thought of as a desirable region to live, and do business. We are also a desirable place to visit with visitor numbers (both staying overnight in our Shire or day trippers) at a very good level. Air BNB customer feedback rated Dungog Region as the most hospitable, so we must be doing something right.

Some key activities: March – Meet the Candidate for the State elections. Candidates did formal presentations and attendees had the opportunity to speak personally with candidates. May – Women Kind Festival, Dungog. This event was an expansion of a fund raiser for our local Destiny Haven, with street stalls, and entertainment in Dowling Street on Saturday morning. Arts Upper Hunter sponsored a free art workshop at Gallery on Dowling over the entire weekend. July – Peter Kenyon workshops, East Gresford. Many business and community members attended one or more of these very worthwhile workshops. Peter is a truly inspirational speaker. Thank you to Jim Doyle for getting Peter back into our Shire, and the support of Rural Aid. August – DDCC Business Forum, Dungog. Representatives from support agencies presented and there was the opportunity for open discussion for attendees to put forward views on issues affecting business in the Shire.

September – Future of Farming Forum. This forum was well attended as the ones in 2022 with more than 70 persons in attendance. Several presenters from all corners of the Shire spoke on agri-tourism, equine industry and beef industry. Much interest centred around the presentation by Bob Doyle regarding investigations into Micro abattoir for our area. The appetite for information regarding all things agriculture seems to be a growing trend with other functions in the community during the year in the Ag vein, being very well attended as well. Plans & reports the Chamber has been contributing to: Draft parking plan for Dowling St Dungog; Economic Development Plan; Open Space & Recreation Plan; Cultural Plan – to be adopted. 2024 – Look forward to the opportunity to be part of Community Builders Program coming to our region in 2024. This is part of the Chamber's annual report was presented by Marion Stuart. It was her last report as President and she thanked many individuals, businesses, council and particularly committee members for their valuable support.
